Wonder Bugs

By: Isabell Carrasquillo & Josie Gutkowski

In the class Wonder Bugs kids learn about bugs and other insects. Four kids will tell you what they did this week.

The teacher, Briana is a school teacher. She said,

“College for Kids gives me something to do in the summer.”

Page 4: Good Morning Lycoming Reporting Staff€¦ · She learned when dinosaurs die their bones go in the ground. Brayden said, “they let you do puzzles of the dinosaurs’ bones.” He

Ismaeel learned about bugs and worms. Ismaeel’s favorite bug is a butterfly because they are so beautiful. Ismaeel’s favorite project they did this week was the Lightning Bug project. They made the Lightning Bugs by using these materials: a recycled water bottle wrapped in tissue paper, and glow sticks to make it glow.

Ismaeel said, “when I was holding the worm I let it go down my sleeve and down my shirt.”

Addison chose this class because she likes nature and bugs. Addison’s favorite bug is a caterpillar because she likes to hold them. She told us that worms eat and breathe though their skin. She said they’re going to put gummy worms in vinegar and sodium to see what happens. Addison said, “that worms have very tiny brains.”

Ibraheem chose this class because he loves insects. His favorite craft was painting a pot to put a flower in it so butterflies would come. One day a bearded came in to the Wonder Bug class and Ibraheem got to hold it.

Page 5: Good Morning Lycoming Reporting Staff€¦ · She learned when dinosaurs die their bones go in the ground. Brayden said, “they let you do puzzles of the dinosaurs’ bones.” He

Addie chose to join this class because she likes bugs and slimy things. Her favorite craft this week was painting rocks to look like bugs. The whole class made a bug jar. Addie said, “I caught a caterpillar at home and now I have two pets: a Dog and a Caterpillar.”

As you can see these kids really love this class. If you come to college for kids you should chose this class.

Student Addison made a lighting bug. She is glad she signed up for this class.

Super Science Good Morning Lycoming

By: Kyndra Carey and Hannah Morehart

Super Science is about rocks, science and other things. You learn about dinosaur bones and the ocean.

Maslin said, “We read a book and made fossils, coloring fossils.” She made friends. She learned when dinosaurs die their bones go in the ground.

Brayden said, “they let you do puzzles of the dinosaurs’ bones.” He made friends and fossils. Teacher Bailey Snyder is a 3th grade teacher. She was a good science teacher. She works well with kids.

Prava said something he hasn’t done before is paint volcanos and make fossils. This is his first year at College For Kids. Alison, too,

young artists By: Isabell

In the class Young Artists, kids make crafts. Two kids will be telling you what

crafts they did this week.

Ryan said his favorite craft was egg carton animals. What you need is an egg carton, markers, and animals to make. Emily said her favorite class was the candle with a picture on it. What you need for this craft is a candle, tissue paper, and markers.

Some other crafts that young artists made are tie – dye coffee filters, parachute men, and 3D hands. To make the tie- dye coffee filters you need colors, and coffee filters. To make parachute men you need

Page 9: Good Morning Lycoming Reporting Staff€¦ · She learned when dinosaurs die their bones go in the ground. Brayden said, “they let you do puzzles of the dinosaurs’ bones.” He

fabric, and pipe cleaner. To make 3D hands you need paper, and markers.

Willow the assistant teacher said, “it gives the kids a chance to be themselves.”

If you like to make crafts this is the class you need to sign up for.

detective academy By Aaliyah Best and Sam Allison

Whodunit and how did they do it? Investigations are important and they can also be fascinating. In Detective Academy you solve mysteries, collect DNA, apply the principals of chromatography, dust for fingerprints, identify different animal or human footprints, and learn to crack secret codes.

The teacher, Mr. Adam Allison, started teaching last year. He likes teaching because it’s a change from what he usually does. His favorite part about teaching is that he gets to do what he wants and he gets to be as creative as he can.

The teacher’s assistant Rilynn Temple started at Lycoming College in second grade. She started officially working to get paid to teach,

This is a class of kids who are in Detective Academy. And as you can see on the board these kids are learning about illusions, not only are they learning but they are having a good time. Photo by: Aaliyah Best

grossology

By: Isabelle Campbell and Lincoln Robertson

This class is when you experiment with ingredients and foods found at grocery stores to find out what their properties are and how the food reacts with different chemicals. This class also has you learn about the human body. And of course, having fun.

When interviewing some students in Grossology class, this is what they said. Karrah stated, “I was interested in the class Grossology because I thought it would be fun. I thought it would be fun because I really like science and dissecting.” Also, she likes the class because the activities are easy and fun. She thinks that the class is fun because of the activities and the people in the class. Her favorite activity they have done in class is the lava lamp. She is really looking forward to dissecting a frog and making friends at the end of the week.

The next student interviewed was Nadia. She said that she was took Grossology because her cousins and brothers did the class when they were her age so she wanted to try it. Her favorite part was the paper mâché eyeball. She likes the class because of the activities and the experience. The activities are really fun because they use renewable resources. She is looking forward to making friends at the end of the week so she can have friends to meet again next year.

The third student was Summer. She chose Grossology because she likes doing really gross things. Her favorite activity was the lava lamp and she is looking forward to dissecting a frog. She thinks that her class is really exciting because of all of the activities and spending time to her classmates. She thinks her classmates are a little crazy but they could possibly be friends.

Charlotte Robertson, a student at Lycoming College for Kids, is currently taking Grossology. She says, “I like Grossology because I like disgusting things.” She and her class are going to dissect cow eyes, and as you may guess,

Grossology students make giant paper mâché eyeballs

Page 13: Good Morning Lycoming Reporting Staff€¦ · She learned when dinosaurs die their bones go in the ground. Brayden said, “they let you do puzzles of the dinosaurs’ bones.” He

Charlotte is pretty excited about it. On Tuesday she made a lava lamp, learned about the digestive system, and she learned how a tongue helps you swallow.

Warning, you’ll hear even more disgusting stuff: A student taking Grossology is Sara Went. “I wanted to do Grossology because I wanted to do it again,” says Went. She’s also looking forward to dissecting cow eyes. She and Charlotte also made paper mâché eyeballs, which Sara explained how to do.

“You take a balloon,” she said, “than you dip it in powder. Then, you stick cut up newspaper on the balloon, and paint the balloon white.” It looks like the class is working on the step with the white paint. There might’ve even been few people working on their finishing touches.

Then the teacher got interviewed. Her name is Josette. She likes teaching the class because she likes really gross stuff. She likes how her kids are always set to learn. And she gets to teach her kids for them to learn about the human body and how it works. She like the creativeness of her kids and her favorite thing to see the kids do is make the fake poop.

Junior Rangers

By Grant Vilello and Wyatt Judge “Junior Rangers is all about animals and their habitats, plus their food,” said Miss Pam, the teacher for Junior Rangers. They also get to learn about animals’ tracks. And they do a lot of animal crafts. Miss Pam teaches this class because her husband has access to animals because he is a taxidermist. She also told me that the Pennsylvania Game gives her class tools. The last thing she told me was that the class’s age range was grade 3 through 4.

Dani a student, said she picked the class because the class is outdoors. She also told me that on the first day they made

Page 15: Good Morning Lycoming Reporting Staff€¦ · She learned when dinosaurs die their bones go in the ground. Brayden said, “they let you do puzzles of the dinosaurs’ bones.” He

nametags and started their grass heads. Also, they made a snack that involved different layers of the soil.

Wesley, who is also a student, wanted to be in the class because he likes the outdoors. He also says that they learn about nature and art.

The one assistant, Mahailya, went to the camp as a kid and it sounded fun to her. She also enjoys being around kids. She also said that the assistants do the hard thing the kids can’t do. It is her second year as an assistant.

Art of Mexico By Isabelle Campbell

Art of Mexico is a class where you can learn about the culture of Mexico. You do activities like self portraits or a sugar skull to help improve your knowledge.

When students and the teacher got interviewed this is what they said. Kyndra said that she did the class the year before, so she decided to do it again. She likes the class because of the activities. Her favorite activity is the sugar skull because she gets to play in the sugar. She is looking forward to hot chocolate and Mexican bread at the end of the week. She thinks the kids are ok but the teacher is amazing.

The next student was Isabell. She chose the class because she likes Mexico and thought she could learn more about it. She really likes the sugar skull activity. She is looking forward to building all of her crafts into a tower. She thinks that her teacher is awesome and creative. She expected the class to be more learning than crafting and its not but that is still fine with her. Last but not least she said that the class is pretty cool and uses a lot of imagination.

Next was the teacher. Her name is Willow. She likes to teach the class because of the Mexican culture. She likes how creative and expressive her students are. At the end of the week she hopes her students are a lot less shy and more talkative.

geocaching

By Lincoln Robertson

Their class is going for a big scavenger hunt. She’s been doing Geocaching for nine years; Ray Temple is the teacher for Geocaching. A Geocache is a container. The container can be the size of a bug to the size of a trash can. It can be. Anyway, you then hide it with some treasure for someone to find. Then you put the coordinates of where you find it.

“I chose this because my family use to do it,” Temple explains.

The next person is Maxton. He decided to join Geocaching because he found a geocache and he thought it was cool.

On Tuesday, they went outside and found geocaches.

“I would do Geocaching again if I could.” he says. On Monday they talked about the basics of Geocaching. “I like this class because it gives me exercise.” he explains.

“You can find Geocaches everywhere,” Temple says, “there are ones in Germany and France.” Geocache seems

complex. Their big thing is making their own geocache. That sounds like fun.

Another person is Teagan. “I like Geocaching ‘cause I like going outside.” Teagan started doing Geocaching because she found one on accident. She thought it was cool, so she started doing it with the Geocaching group.

Artamis is working on games.

Eva chose to do the class Picture This! because she did the class last year and she thought it was really fun. Her favorite project she is making is the votive but there is a tie with the scrapbook.

Xander chose to do this class because he likes pictures: he likes taking pictures, he likes using pictures, and pictures in general. Xander’s favorite project is the snow globe because he likes how you can shake it up and the glitter goes all around.

Bella joined this class because she had a lot of pictures and she wanted to do something with them. Her favorite project is the coasters. She thinks the biggest project they are making is the scrapbook. The class Picture This! is Bella’s favorite class. She likes it because all of her pictures do not have to go to waste.

Addison chose to sign up for the class Picture This! because she likes to make crafts. Her favorite craft they are making is the scrapbook. She thinks the biggest project they are making is the calendar.

The helper, Laurel really likes the class because she like crafts. Her favorite project is the snow globe because she likes the water and she thinks it is cool. She thinks the biggest project is the calendar. She has been taking classes here at Lycoming College for Kids for 5 years. This is her first-year volunteering.

Picture This! is a truly unique class. If you ever come to Lycoming College for Kids you should take this class.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving By: Jack Yaggi and Grant Vilello

Deep down in the pool lay Frank Morrow and Sara Haas’s students, ready to swim like they never have before, at a local house in Williamsport, PA. In the morning there are 12 kids who love to snorkel and then in the afternoon there 10 kids who are ready to go underwater and stay underwater while they scuba dive. While Frank has 50 years of experience in the underwater world, the kids are working their safety skills and how to use all of the equipment, such as a snorkeling

life vest, safely and correctly. While the kids spend all morning in the water, they gain self

confidence as well as their lung capacity while they are underwater. As Aiden Berry said, “I learn to build confidence in myself.” Audrey also said that she recommends it and it is very fun. In the end it all works out because the kids get their snorkeling and scuba licenses.

POTATO NEWS By Kyndra, Isabelle, Themis and Aaliyah

Potato news is a small part of the newspaper and it’s all about food. The people who came up with it were Isabelle Campbell, Themis Leidhecker, Kyndra Carey, and Aaliyah Best. We are all potatoes and don’t eat raw potatoes because that is cannibalism. WE are Potato News and we are the food network. Themis fell out of ze chair like a sack of po-ta-to-es.

We interviewed some of the chefs in the cafeteria and they said that they like working here because all of the new friendly faces and all of the chefs have worked here for quite a bit of time.

Above, the staff of Potato News holds a meeting. From left to right, Kyndra, Aaliyah, Themis and Isabelle. At right, the Potato News press passes.

We asked people what their favorite ice cream flavor was. We got 8 chocolate, 5 vanilla, 1 teaberry, and 1 meltaway.

We tried a sugar cookie, an Oreo brownie, a brownie, and a bowl of pasta. We thought that the cookie was not sweet enough, the Oreo brownie needed to be more Oreo and less chocolate, and the pasta sauce was a bit watery.

Mythical Storytellers

Wow…. By Collin Creveling In Mythical Storytellers, excited students are learning about hieroglyphics and different types of mythology through fun and crafty hands-on experiments. And with these experiments the students learn about topics and subjects to write about. One day in Mythical Storytellers, the students were working on an experiment about hieroglyphics and then they worked on a fable that needed to include the hieroglyphics. What an amazing way to learn about hieroglyphics!

One student in this class is Sydney Coburn. She says they were learning about hieroglyphics. They were taught from presentations on YouTube to crafty experiments and stories that were written a long time ago. It’s amazing that this class is using fables to write! When asked for some words to describe the class, Sydney chose, “awesome, fun, enjoyable and an amazing way to learn!” Another student in this class is Andrew Ware, who says he enjoys learning about hieroglyphics and Greek mythology. “This class is enjoyable, fun and has a lot of learning.”

Both Andrew Ware and Sydney Coburn enjoy this amazing class and recommend it for everyone. It must be a lot of fun learning about myths and hieroglyphics through myths and fables.

This is Mythical Storytellers learning about the stories in constellations.

took the class because he took it last year and really enjoyed it. He said that he would take the class again because he likes to engineer and build things.

“I’m really excited to test my bridge because I’m going to win,” he said.

Kevin Edmonds, a Young Engineer says he enjoys the class. The reason he took this class is because he wanted to learn how to engineer and create things. He is excited to build the water powered rockets.

Another young engineer named Eliana Ranellei said she took the class because she wants to be an architect when she gets older. When they made rockets made out of straws, she said the fins helped it fly better.

“We made the bridges out of toothpicks because it gives us a challenge.”

Page 31: Good Morning Lycoming Reporting Staff€¦ · She learned when dinosaurs die their bones go in the ground. Brayden said, “they let you do puzzles of the dinosaurs’ bones.” He

Dave Edmonds is another Young Engineer who took the class because he likes rockets and wants to make lots of them.

“I want to see one explode,” said Dave Edmonds.

“I like seeing kids enjoy the projects and like to help them if they have trouble,” said teacher Mr. Watts.

Aeronautical Engineering By Abraham Went

Aeronautical students testing out their new gliders at the quad in Lycoming College In Aeronautical Engineering there is a barrage of aerospace learning! Doing competitions, building gliders and according to Isaac Cremes, “we are learning about everything that flies and the science behind it.” The goal of this class is to build rockets and launch them on Friday at the volleyball courts near Lycoming College, in Williamsport, P.A. Pupils are learning aerospace engineering and aerodynamics under head teacher Kate Connelly, who says, “I have a passion for aerospace engineering as I was inspired by this course.” She has

Page 33: Good Morning Lycoming Reporting Staff€¦ · She learned when dinosaurs die their bones go in the ground. Brayden said, “they let you do puzzles of the dinosaurs’ bones.” He

taught this course for 8 years and has had many experiences. She also stresses the need for safety. If kids don’t follow directions they will be hurt and have possibly 28 stitches. Students built their gliders out of various materials such as cardstock, glue, popsicle sticks, and wood. They have different competitions to experiment engineering of the gliders, such as most barrel rolls, distance, hang time, and loopy loops. “Doing competitions with our planes is my favorite part,” said Emmanuel Oyensui. Kids make rockets their first time as a group, and their second time on their own. Then they use their knowledge gained from the week such as knowing how to build the rocket from their previous rocket build, “…applying this knowledge to have the best possible launch.”

Engineer’s drying boomerangs,. In the afternoon class students made boomerangs instead of gliders. These boomerangs caught the eyes of the students while they were making them. Collin Creveling said, “I adore the uniqueness and the experimentation of my boomerang.” These boomerangs were made out of a big bulky block of balsa wood. Then cut with a hobby knife and sand papered into shape. “It took me two classes to finish my boomerang launch,” Collin Creveling said.

Page 34: Good Morning Lycoming Reporting Staff€¦ · She learned when dinosaurs die their bones go in the ground. Brayden said, “they let you do puzzles of the dinosaurs’ bones.” He

As they are all waiting for the big day on Friday, people are telling riddles while they do their taskful work. According to Jack Yaggi, “Riddles are my favorite part of this class, besides the rockets.” So, if you’re into riddles and aerospace engineering this is definitely the class for you.

Black and White Film Photography By Themis Leidhecker

Black and white film photography is a class that teaches you how to enlarge and develop your own pictures that you took on a roll of film. You also get to make cyanotypes.

When I interviewed some students, I asked them a series of questions. I asked Emma what made her choose this class and she said “I started taking pictures and my gram said I should take photography”. I also asked her why she chose this class, and she told me, “I want to have photography be my career.”

I asked Devan why she took this class she said, “I just like photography.” When I asked Devan how long she has been taking photography classes, and how she feels about this class she stated, “2 years, and it is fun.”

I also interviewed the assistant, Bella. I asked her why she chose this class. She said, “no one does film photography anymore and it is like a lost art. I like the environment the classes are in.” She said her favorite part of this class was “that there is such a short amount of time and that I can build a connection with people.”

Computer Science: Tic Tac Toe

By Collin Creveling and Jack Yaggi

Way in to the coding world, in the basement of the Academics Center, is where the computers lie awaiting to code during College for Kids 2019. On July 23, in the coding program at College for Kids, these talented kids are trying to code a tic-tac-toe game filled with fun and strategy. According to the class, they are going to make a brick break game. This is an amazing class that is recommended by Landon Arriaga and taught by Jared Richardson, and apparently “in coding you can code until you meet your preferences.” They first learned how to put all 4 linens to make all 9 spaces. Then they made the x and o and chose that they would be blue and red. After they got all that, they made a command to make the computer check all the diagonal and rows. “Programing is based on ‘it’s wrong and I don’t know why’ and ‘It’s right and I don’t know why,’ said teacher Jarred Richardson.

Page 37: Good Morning Lycoming Reporting Staff€¦ · She learned when dinosaurs die their bones go in the ground. Brayden said, “they let you do puzzles of the dinosaurs’ bones.” He

The reporting staff at Good Morning Lycoming is sorry to say that, due to technical difficulties, there will be no stories this year for Structure It! or Outdoor Enthusiasts. The two stories were saved together in a Word doc that suffered a file error on the last day of College for Kids. The Mobile Journalists team Nathan Carson and Sam Allison worked hard on these stories, but unfortunately we were unable to recover them.
