Week Commencing 20/04/20

Good Morning Class 3,

Welcome back and to another amazing week of home learning! Strap yourselves

and brace yourselves, as once again we have a lot of exciting tasks to tackle.

Just give everything a go and try your best (that’s all I ask)! You’re all doing a

super job and I am so impressed, so please give yourselves a Merit Point for all

the effort and perseverance, which has been evident in all of your work.

I have absolutely loved receiving all your updates… photos and video

performances, which you have been sending. So please keep them coming in,

as I love to hear from you all.

Hope you have a fabulous week of learning and keep up all the hard work!

Lots of Love,

Miss Sweeney

Maths

MNP Textbook 3B – starting at p102, followed by Workbook, Worksheet 3, p69

(which can either be carried out in you Maths book, just like we do in school –

remember to write the worksheet number and page number – or it can be

completed in the photocopied workbook)

1) Take a look at the In Focus, and study the graph.

What information does it show us?

Which book is the most popular?

Which is the least popular?

How have you managed to work this out?

Can you then come up and ask your own questions?

Page 3: Good Morning Class 3,€¦ · Good Morning Class 3, Welcome back and to another amazing week of home learning! Strap yourselves and brace yourselves, as once again we have a lot of

Home Learning Week Commencing 20/04/20

2) Look at the questions in the Let’s Learn and see if you can answer these.

You might want to cover any answers!

3) Give the Guided Practice p104 a go!

No need to write the full sentences but just the answers.

4) Move on to carrying out the Worksheet 3 either on the copy you have,

some of you may need to carry this work out neatly in your Maths books.

LI: I can read bar graphs

5) Possible extension and challenge:

Challenge

This normally takes us around one hour to complete.

Spelling and Grammar

Weekly Spelling Test! Ask a grown-up or older sibling to test you on your

spellings. They should say the word, put it in a sentence and then repeat it. This

can be done in the front of the small exercise book you have, which doubles up

as a Rough & SpaG book. Then self-mark it using your purple pen.

Next, cut and stick the following week’s spellings on the next page.

You might want to get practising these straight away!

Today we’re going to continue read the book. Please read the first five pages

until it says ‘I missed Dad.’

Then turn back to the page with Mum and boy sitting with the empty chair at

the table.

Where do you think Dad might have gone?

Where do you think the Mum and Dad might be thinking?

What might they be saying?

Can you practise saying this out loud, working on expression?

For the main part of today’s lesson I would like you to write an e-mail, imagining

you are the boy. This is very similar to a letter, you will need to begin it…

Dear Dad, and then sign it off from the boy (tomorrow you will e-mail me these).

You need to describe your family life and ask your Dad to come home.

Write this in the front of your Writing Books:

Monday 20th April 2020 LI: I can write an e-mail

Underline both with a ruler!

This normally takes us 1 to 1 ½ hours to complete.

Guided Reading & Spelling Practice

Take some time to do some quiet reading or read aloud to someone if you can.

After finishing I would like you to make a prediction about what you think will

happen next in your book.

Why do you think this will happen? Can you explain why?

Do some spelling practice, too.

This normally takes us 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

French

When you get the chance, maybe not today but later in

the week can you keep practising your French!

https://www.duolingo.com/

Recommended time 20 to 30 minutes.

Art

This term we’re going to studying an artistic style called Cubism. Today I would

just like you to study the pictures below which have been created in this style.

Look at the pictures and complete the ‘Tell Me Grid’ (drawn or printed).

What do you like? What do you dislike?

What questions do you have? Does it remind you of anything?

Next can you try and analyse the style.

What do all these pictures have in common? What do you think Cubism is?

This normally takes us around 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

1) Check and look at the Let’s Learn.

There are lots of questions to answer.

See if you are able to cover the answers and work them out

independently.

Be careful as number 4 is a bit more complicated, and you’ll need to do a

calculation.

2) Give the Guided Practice p107 a go!

You may want to carry out your workings for these in your Maths books.

3) Move on to carrying out the Worksheet 4 either on the copy you have,

some of you may need to carry out the work in your Maths books..

LI: I can read bar graphs

4) Possible extension and challenge:

Challenge

Go back to the work you did yesterday and add some questions, to test

people on whether they can read an interpret the data on the graph.

e.g. Which two year groups earned the same amount of Merit Points for

Good Behaviour?

EXT: Make sure you can work out and know the answers.

Maybe send an e-mail to a friend and test them, see if they know the answer?

This normally takes us around one hour to complete.

Read the next page of the book which ends with the Mum saying

‘Don’t go into the forest… ‘

I want you to think about:

Why does the Mum tell her son not to go into the forest to get to Grandma’s

house? Why does he disobey her?

What do you think the boy was thinking?

Why does he decide to go through the forest?

What YOU tell the boy if you were talking to him… to turn around and go home?

Or would you tell him to go the quickest because his grandma is poorly?

I want you to think of some advice to give to the boy. Rehearse this orally first.

At the front of your Writing Books:

explain why he should go one way or the other.

Think about all the wonderful conjunctions you can use: because, although, so,

therefore, even though, whenever, however…

I would like to see at least half a page of writing with very neat presentation!

This normally takes us around 1 to 1 ½ hours to complete.

at 9am with a Joe Wick’s workout?

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ

Otherwise, get outside in the garden! You might want to practise some basic ball

skills: throwing, catching, bouncing, underarm, backhand and overarm. Can you

invent a game, which involves using many of these skills?

This normally takes around 45 minutes.

Spelling and Grammar

Can you work out the word which has become

jumbled?

Then write three different sentences which includes.

Challenge: Can you change the position of it within

the sentence?

English

The first thing you have to do today is finish reading the rest of the story!

Once you’ve finished reading it. I’d like you to spend the rest of today’s English

lesson investigating and researching the features of playscripts. We have

already written one for our Stone Age cookery programme, but I’d like this next

one to have more detail.

So, if possible take a look at the following slides (or otherwise just at):

Page 16: Good Morning Class 3,€¦ · Good Morning Class 3, Welcome back and to another amazing week of home learning! Strap yourselves and brace yourselves, as once again we have a lot of

Home Learning Week Commencing 20/04/20

Then in the front of your Writing Books:

LI: I can identify the features of a playscript Wednesday 22nd April 2020

Neatly copy out the first part of the playscript.

Scene 7 – A Mad Tea Party

The Mad Hatter, Dormouse and Hare are sitting at a table having afternoon tea.

Narrator: Lost and lonely, Alice continued towards the sound. She didn’t know

what to expect when she reached a clearing…

(Alice enters the scene, stage left)

Please then annotate and label the five main playscript features.

EXT: Can you go on underneath to give a little more detail about each feature.

This normally takes us 1 to 1 ½ hours to complete.

Guided Reading & Spelling Practice

Now we’ve finished reading Into the Forest by Anthony Browne can you please

carry out a book review for this book. You may have the template below useful.

LI: I can review a book

Do some spelling practice, too.

This normally takes us 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

Computing

Today you’re going to need your Writing Books, with Monday’s English work in

it. Our new topic this term is all about learning to send e-mails. So for our first

lesson I would like you to put your e-mail sending skills to the test, we’ll be

beginning with the basics. Please start by logging into your school e-mail

account:

https://klz.org.uk

I’d like you to open and create a new email.

Where it says TO: start to type the letters Swee and you should find me.

Please, type up and send me the email you wrote in the role of the boy in English

on Monday.

Remember to type a Subject for the message too.

Page 17: Good Morning Class 3,€¦ · Good Morning Class 3, Welcome back and to another amazing week of home learning! Strap yourselves and brace yourselves, as once again we have a lot of

Home Learning Week Commencing 20/04/20

Your challenges today are to look at the icons (buttons) circled next to the green

arrow below. Choose your favourite word, highlight it (by pressing down and

dragging the mouse) and make it Bold by clicking on the B. Choose your most

impressive sentence and do the same but this time underline it by clicking on

the U.

Once you are happy with your writing (and have proof-read it) please send it to

me… I look forward to reading them! =o)

Then, if or when you have a chance to use the computer go on to Times Tables

Rockstars and practise your times tables.

This should take 30 – 45 minutes.

MNP Textbook 3B – starting at p113, followed by Workbook, Mind Workout,

p81 (which can either be carried out in you Maths book, just like we do in school

– remember to write the worksheet number and page number – or it can be

completed in the photocopied workbook)

Today we’re going to carry out the Mind Workouts just like we normally do in

class – neither of which are too difficult. You just need to read the graphs

carefully. Start by doing the one in the Textbook, record all working in your

Maths Books. Then move onto the one in the Workbook!

Possible extension and challenge:

Challenge

Create your own similar questions based on the data in the graphs to answer.

Make sure you know the answers. You may even wish to share them or

challenge your friends.

This normally takes us around one hour to complete.

Spelling and Grammar

Handwriting practice today can you copy out the following words today at least

3 times each, in your neatest presentation.

As you can see we are focusing on different types of words this week.

Can you work out what types of words these are?

English

I would suggest today that you start the lesson by reading the book of Into the

Forest by Anthony Browne again. Sometimes be can pick up some extra details,

even get great enjoyment, when we re-read stories. This is a quite a simple text,

so you may also want to focus on the illustrations (pictures) too, study them in

great detail – what can you see?

Today’s task is for you to re-write the story as a playscript.

At the front of your Writing Books:

LI: I can write a playscript Thursday 24th April 2020

First take a look at the features and example you looked at yesterday.

1) Give the playscript a title Into the Forest and underline it

2) You may wish by listing the:

Characters Props

Little Boy Masking tape

Mum Pen

Dad Basket

Grandma Cake

3) Start by describing the…

Setting: Boy sits upright in bed frightened as a storm is taking place.

4) Then go on to write down all the speech which takes place.

Little Boy:

Page 20: Good Morning Class 3,€¦ · Good Morning Class 3, Welcome back and to another amazing week of home learning! Strap yourselves and brace yourselves, as once again we have a lot of

Home Learning Week Commencing 20/04/20

Mum:

Remember NO SPEECH MARKS!

5) Put any actions that take place and actions in (brackets).

Please concentrate on neat presentation and using powerful verbs

throughout. Instead of ran… dashed! etc.

Challenge – Think about the structure of the text too. Separating it into

different scenes according to the setting and giving these titles too.

At Home

Venturing into the Woods …

Once you have finished, take the time to re-read your writing checking it all

makes sense.

This normally takes us 1 to 1 ½ hours to complete.

Guided Reading & Spelling Practice

The book we have just read was written by the same book as Gorilla. I would

like you to think back to that book and also think of the one we have just read.

Which one do you prefer? Please write a brief description explaining which one

and why in the back of your Writing Books.

LI: I can carry out a book comparison

Do some spelling practice, too.

This normally takes us 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

Science

Start off with a bit of a quiz of your knowledge, just like last week by playing Five

Lives if you like. Use the slides below.

Today we are going to find out more about how light is reflected. Remember

that reflected light is light that has bounced off objects. When light hits a rough

surface, it is scattered in all directions but when light hits a smooth and shiny

surface, light beams are reflected in the same direction, giving a clear reflected

image. For this reason mirrors, glass, shiny metal and even water (but only when

it’s still) are the best reflectors.

Why is it thought that only still water that can reflect a clear image?

Page 21: Good Morning Class 3,€¦ · Good Morning Class 3, Welcome back and to another amazing week of home learning! Strap yourselves and brace yourselves, as once again we have a lot of

Home Learning Week Commencing 20/04/20

Because a rough surface scatters light in all directions!

Which surface gives the best reflection?

A mirror!

Let’s investigate reflections a little more. You will need a mirror!

Below you find some possible different activities to carry out, please choose a

selection of your choice (at least 3 please):

1) Mirror Writing

Write a short message. Use the mirror to reflect it into mirror code and then

copy the coded message. Send or show your message to a friend or family

member and challenge them to decode using another mirror!

2) Mirror Maze

Trace over an up and down line whilst only being able to look at your hand in

the mirror! Can you keep to the line? Why is it so hard?

3) Mirror Multiplying

Tape a pair of mirrors so they hinge together. Investigate how different items

reflect in the mirrors. What happens if you open and close the hinge?

4) Reflective surfaces

Find as many surfaces as possible around your house (and beyond if you have

adult support) that can reflect an image. What do they have in common? Which

give a sharp reflection? Why? Which distort the reflection? Why?

Use the Science Mirror Resources document for more information on the tasks,

a template to record findings and an exciting creative challenge of making a

periscope – should you have the resources and grown-up to help!

Any work or findings of investigations to be recorded at the back of Writing

Books:

LI: I can investigate reflective surfaces and reflections

This normally takes 1 ½ - 2 hours to carry out.

Friday 25th April 2020

PE

It’s Friday again, when we would normally do PE. So how

about start off today by carrying out some some light

stretches and yoga:

https://www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga

Alternatively, if you would like to carry out a daily mile jog

around your garden or start a Joe Wick’s workout, at 9am!

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ

This normally takes us 45 minutes to complete.

Maths

MNP Workbook 3B – Review 10 on p82

We have come to the end of the unit on picture and bar graphs so have a go at

the Review today, to revise everything we have learnt!

Remember to look at the scales on the side of the graph carefully, work out any

missing numbers – look back at all your past work to help remind you.

Can you finish by self-marking your work using your purple pen?

If you made any mistakes, try having a go at the question again.

This will be a slightly shorter lesson than normal… but it’s Friday! =o)

Spelling and Grammar

Choose 6 words and put them into sentences, underline them so they stand out.

Write them in your little yellow SPaG Book under the title:

Page 23: Good Morning Class 3,€¦ · Good Morning Class 3, Welcome back and to another amazing week of home learning! Strap yourselves and brace yourselves, as once again we have a lot of

Adding the Prefixes Auto and Super

Have you worked out what the prefixes mean yet?

Write a short definition.

• The prefix auto means ‘self’.

• The prefix super means ‘more, better or bigger than the usual’.

If you don’t understand any of the words look them up in a dictionary!

English

We’re going to have a slightly shorter English lesson today, too.

I would like you take the time finish off your playscripts today, or if you have

finished to re-read them with a purple pen and make some edits and

improvements.

Think about identifying the verbs and choosing more powerful one – use a

thesaurus if you have one. You might want to add more description to your

stage settings and stage directions too.

If you do want the challenge or would like to do more writing. Either choose

part of your play or you might want to do more (the whole thing) and take them

time to write it out again neatly with all the edits.

Friday 25th April 2020 and LI: I can edit and improve my playscript

This normally takes us 1 to 1 ½ hours to complete.

RE

Begin by looking at the beautiful art piece you

created last lesson on The Pentecost. Below you will

find the complete painting!

In what ways are your pictures different in what

ways are they similar?

Does yours also have Mary and the disciples with

flames above their heads?

Does yours have even more detail maybe?

Page 24: Good Morning Class 3,€¦ · Good Morning Class 3, Welcome back and to another amazing week of home learning! Strap yourselves and brace yourselves, as once again we have a lot of

Home Learning Week Commencing 20/04/20

Today we are going to look at some more art pieces, which depict The Pentecost.

Look at them each in turn, thinking about what you like and dislike about them?

Have any symbols been used, are any of them the same?

Have they missed any part of the story out?

Has the artist been able to reflect how Mary and the disciples are feeling?

http://www.titian.net/pentecost/

Home Learning Week Commencing 20/04/20

https://fineartamerica.com/featured/pentecost-jim-whalen.html

You may wish to re-read the bible passage we looked at last week,

The Day of Pentecost: Acts 2: 1-15, 22 and 37-44

Then take some time to reflect:

Look back at the paintings – do you think these are a

good way of showing this event even though it is

a bit difficult to understand exactly what was happening?

What would your painting of this event look like?

Please take the time to create your own now, if you wish.

This normally takes us around 1 to 1 ½ hours to complete.

Music

In Music this term we are going to be

concentrating and learning about this famous

classical composer:

I am not going to tell you who he is yet.

I would like you to think, however, of any

questions you may wish to ask him?

Page 26: Good Morning Class 3,€¦ · Good Morning Class 3, Welcome back and to another amazing week of home learning! Strap yourselves and brace yourselves, as once again we have a lot of

Home Learning Week Commencing 20/04/20

Then we you have access to the Internet, I would like you to grab your Sketch

Book and some colouring pencils (2 or 3) and either make the room you are in

dark or close your eyes. I would then like you to listen the music, try and feel it

and without looking move your pencils over the paper whilst listening and create

a piece of artwork, which represents how the music sounds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHHzop0ha6Y

Imagine your pencils are musical instruments and move them in time to the

tune. Imagine they are drumsticks beating or the bow of a violin. Move them

and draw in whatever way feels right. Then open your eyes and take a look!

Does your art piece look how you imagined?

This normally takes 20 to 30 minutes.

PSHE

Our topic this term is going to be ‘Wellbeing’.

I want you to first think about this word… What does it mean?

If you don’t know ask an adult to help and see if you can find out together.

This is currently a very important word, as we take even more special care to

look after and out for one another. There are some people in society, at the

moment, especially key workers (doctors, nurses, delivery drivers, pharmacists,

supermarket workers, rubbish collectors…) who are still working exceptionally

hard for us! Sometimes we need to remember to say thanks.

So today’s task:

Make a poster to thank your postman/postwoman and any delivery drivers,

family or friends that bring food and items to your house, for all their hard work.

Display it outside your front door where they will see it.

This will really make their day!

Choosing Time

Finally, reward yourselves with carrying out an activity of your choice – of course

with your adult’s agreement. You may wish to go outside if it’s dry and build or

create some outdoor crafts, do some art, play with some Lego or your favourite

toy. You deserve it! Another incredible week of learning Class 3 – Well done!

Take care and have a lovely weekend.

Lots of Love,

Miss Sweeney
