Can wearinghearing aidscause furtherdamage tomy hearing? That’s a good question.
Yes and no. If a hearingaid is properly fit, it willnot cause damage. Ifimproperly fit, yes it cancause damage.
The question becomes...how do youknow if the hearing aid is properly fit?As an audiologist, there are certaintechniques I use to make sure hearing aidsare fit correctly.
First, every patient goes throughan extensive evaluation to ensure thehearing loss is properly diagnosed. Thisincludes evaluating the outer, middle, and inner ears, as well as cognitivespeech understanding. This helps ensureI recommend the proper hearing aid foreach individual patient.
After this testing is performed andthe hearing aid arrives, each hearing aidis set to a prescription based on the testsperformed. The device performance canthen be verified using several techniques, such as real ear measures, which showsthe output at the ear level of the hearingaid, as well as sound field tests which yieldinformation about what the patient canhear wearing the devices.
By carefully performing all of thesemeasures, I can ensure my patient willhave maximum audibility and ultimatelybe successful with their hearing aids.Because of the issue of improper fit, it isimportant to think twice about ordering a“hearing aid” off of the internet or out ofa magazine because it may over or underamplify and be improperly fit.
As a patient at Taylor Hearing, wemake sure that you feel comfortable withyour hearing aids. With any hearingaid purchase, you have full service forthe lifetime of that hearing aid whichincludes: free wax removal, free cleaningof the hearing aid, free hearing checkups, retesting on a regular basis and a cup ofcoffee with a freshly baked cookie. Welook forward to seeing you!

Those who are called to a career in healthcare are a special group. To spend one’s life helping others who are suffering from ailments and illnesses takes strength, courage and heart. In this issue of Good Health, we decided to shine a light on some of the incredibly giving men and women who make up the healthcare workforce in Memphis and who, ultimately, make our city a better place to live.
During the recent fight against an outbreak of the Ebola virus, healthcare workers have proven themselves the real heroes of this story. The global attention surrounding the outbreak has raised awareness regarding the risks that healthcare workers bravely face, both at home and abroad. Healthcare providers on the frontlines have been fighting this crisis with a tenacity that is nothing less than admirable.
While this issue includes several feature articles on local healthcare heroes, we also have many of our regular features, such as an at-home workout guide, a racing calendar, a heart-healthy recipe, nutrition advice and more. Thanks for reading and as always, if you have any feedback, please email me at [email protected].

Think of Joy Sharp as a personal navigator for the healthcare system.
In 2013, with a grant from Cigna, the Methodist Healthcare Foundation set out to create an innovative new program serving the 38109 zip code in South Memphis, an area identified as a high-needs epicenter in a city with the dubious distinction of having among the highest level of healthcare disparities in the nation.
Sharp, who grew up in South Memphis and had more than 10 years of community outreach experience, was tapped to pioneer the effort. The Methodist team then consulted with the pastors of the Congregational Health Network to figure out what the community needed. The Congregational Health Network (CHN) includes nearly 500 congregations that have partnered with Methodist to better connect the system with patients in underserved communities. The CHN pastors told Sharp continuity was a big deal.
“Just keep coming,” Sharp remembered the pastors saying. “The community is used to those fly by night
programs…that are coming in and that leave right back out.”
Under Sharp’s guidance, Wellness Wednesdays were born. Each month, at the Riverview Community Center in South Memphis, Sharp hosts a variety of vendors and provides free baseline screening services, education and referrels. The University of Tennessee Health Science Center has done oral cancer screenings and Southern College
of Optometry did their first vision check-ups in October. They will deliver the glasses at November’s event.
“We don’t call it a health fair,” said Sharp. “We call it a wellness event,
because I make contact with everyone who comes through the door. Meaning, if I don’t talk to you that day, I’m calling you the next day.”
Sharp is the beating heart of this new collaborative effort, and her position is much more involved than simply coordinating and hosting a monthly event. She describes her role as part social worker, part case manager, part nurse, part anything-else-that-is-needed.
It’s a position that’s hard to define, in part because it is the product of the kind of innovative, whole-health-inspired thinking emerging in the healthcare establishment. Sharp joined the Population Health department at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare in March of 2013 and in January, Sharp’s position went from part-time to full-time. She now has a caseload at the hospital.
“I love that Methodist gives me the freedom to be innovative, to help people, instead of saying we do it like this and this,” said Sharp. “They believe in what I do.”
After each Wellness Wednesday, Sharp spends much of the next week or so following up with participants—making referrals, educating when possible and facilitating everything from prescription refills to transportation to and from the appointments she has helped arrange. Her ultimate task is twofold—to leverage available resources to benefit some of Memphis’ most vulnerable citizens

and to empower the same citizens to be accountable for their own health outcomes.
Sharp’s patients are people identified as having an abnormally high number of emergency room visits in a given year. For these patients, her mission is not only to help them stabilize chronic conditions, but also to help them rethink their approach to healthcare, such as encouraging the use of primary care providers, community health centers or minor medical centers in place of the emergency room.
Sharp personally tracks each of her patients who check into a Methodist location. She also has a phone that’s exclusively for her patients. Once a patient appears on her radar, she is committed to being a reliable point of contact for them. She also makes a habit of accumulating contact information from others who share her commitment to
customer service.
“We always joke about that it’s not
what you know but who you know,” Sharp
said. “So if you get a person whose heart
beats almost the same as yours, y’all can
move mountains.”

John Lewis may have gotten his start in
accounting, but he has found his home
in healthcare.
Lewis, who is enrolled in an executive
MBA program, earned his bachelor’s
degree in accounting before entering
public accounting and completing the
CPA exam. From there, he took a job
with a Memphis manufacturing start-up,
which is where he gained experience
in operations, logistics and information
technology.
Always interested in healthcare
because of the growing opportunities,
Lewis joined the team at Semmes-
Murphey Neurologic and Spine Institute
as the chief operating officer in 2002, and
he never looked back.
“It is such a great place to work,” he
said. “The doctors are phenomenal, and
it has been a privilege to be a part of a
great organization that has had such a
long history.”
In 2009, Lewis was named
administrator and CEO for the clinic,
which was founded 102 years ago by
the community’s first neurosurgeon, Dr.
Eustace Semmes.
Shortly after being named
administrator of the clinic, Lewis
began working with several physicians
to establish the Semmes-Murphey
Foundation in 2010.
“One of the primary missions
of the clinic is to teach and train the
next generation of doctors, and the
Foundation allows us to establish those
educational opportunities,” he said. “The
Foundation also focuses on promoting
public welfare through improvement of
the healthcare delivery system and to
engage in scientific research.”
Both the Clinic and the Foundation
work closely with the Medical Education
Research Institute, a nonprofit
medical teaching and training facility.
MERI provides hands-on educational
experiences for physicians, many from
around the world. Dr. Kevin Foley, a
neurosurgeon with Semmes-Murphey,
is the one who originally came up with
the concept of MERI and is the medical
director and chairman of the facility.
Several clinic physicians instruct and train
at the MERI.
“MERI truly is a hidden gem in our
community,” Lewis said. “It allows our
physicians to develop new and improved
techniques, which result in better quality
of care during surgical procedures.”
The Foundation has also helped the
clinic expand its mission of teaching and
training globally with international trips,
including a regular outreach program
in Sarajevo, where Semmes-Murphey
physicians train and perform complex
procedures with local physicians and
residents.
“Dr. Kenan Arnautovic was born
in Sarajevo and was a fully-trained
neurosurgeon before coming to the
United States,” Lewis said. “Now, through
his position as a neurosurgeon with
Semmes-Murphey, he is able to give back
and provide education to the community
he came from through our international
outreach program.
“I think it is a real testament to
the physicians of the group – past and
present – who have been an active and
important part of the medical community
for more than 100 years and are known as
leaders in their field of expertise all over
the world.”

Having ‘heart’ in the community
As the leader of a clinic that provides the
majority of patient care related to stroke and
aneurysm in the Memphis community, Lewis felt
it was important for him to support a local cause
dedicated to fighting stroke.
In 2012, Semmes-Murphey neurosurgeon Dr.
Adam Arthur asked Lewis to serve as a committee
member for the Memphis Heart Ball, and since
joining the cause, Lewis’s involvement with the
American Heart Association and American Stroke
Association has only increased.
He serves on the AHA’s local board of
directors and, along with Emily Capadalis from
First Tennessee, is co-chairing for the 39th annual
Memphis Heart Ball, which will be held Saturday,
Feb. 21, 2015 at the Peabody Hotel.
“The American Heart Association is so
important to the community in terms of saving
lives, prevention and encouraging better health
habits,” Lewis said. “The organization does a
great job of educating physicians on the latest
developments in research, and by supporting their
causes, we are making a difference in the fight
against heart diseases and stroke.”

Susan Helms has always been something a safety enthusiast. She
has long given smoke alarms and fire extinguishers as wedding gifts. She takes helmets and car seats to baby showers.
It’s only fitting that she has become a safety guru here in the Mid-South, leading the effort at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital to reduce the numbers of accidental childhood injuries and deaths. Around 10,000 children come to the Le Bonheur emergency department every year with injuries that are preventable.
In her more than 20 years working as the director of injury prevention and leader of the Mid-South chapter of the global Safe Kids organization, Helms has been an advocate for safe practices in a variety of arenas. She holds a master’s degree in child injury prevention and has championed causes such as child passenger safety, fire and burn prevention, water safety, railroad safety, pedestrian safety and more.
“We really want to make safety a habit for people, something that is just
second nature,” said Helms. “And the thing is—it’s not that hard to do, and it doesn’t cost money—it’s just a matter of placing a priority on safe practices.”
In October, Safe Kids Mid-South celebrated International Walk to School Day with a parade at Treadwell Elementary School. Thanks to a grant from FedEx, improvements were made at Treadwell to create a safer pedestrian experience for the community. Bushes were cut, crosswalks were replaced, new signs were made, and a one-way street was changed to two-way to allow for better curbside drop-off and pick-up of students.
The Safe Kids and FedEx partnership dates back to the year 2000, when the Walk This Way Program was created in the United States in an effort to teach proper behaviors to motorists and child pedestrians and to also create more “walkable” areas in communities across the country.
More than 750 elementary schools are now participating in Walk This Way events. Helms said she was “really proud” of the Walk This Way program because
it started at a local level in Memphis and has grown into a national initiative. Another initiative close to Helms’ heart is that of water safety.
“Sometimes, it takes a horrible tragedy to get the community to wrap its head around a problem,” said Helms.
Such was the case after the drowning of two Memphis teens on the opening day for municipal pools in Memphis in 2008. The preventable, yet fatal, accident led to the creation of a task force dedicated to helping the community become “water-wise.”
This grassroots effort took hold in the community and an organization, called Splash Mid-South, was created at Le Bonheur to address children’s health and safety issues related to swimming.
Since 2008, Splash Mid-South has provided swim lessons to more than 3,000 children, and more than 50 of those children now swim competitively. In addition, 150 adults have been trained by the organization to perform CPR and more than 130 lifeguards received additional training through an annual

event called the Lifeguard Games.Data drives all of the efforts of
the Safe Kids organization and injury prevention team at Le Bonheur, said Helms.
“We look at the data and it will tell us where and what kind of accidents are occurring and how many,” said Helms. “Then we tackle the area where we can make the biggest difference.”
The injuries addressed by Safe Kids, said Helms, have resulted in an overall death rate that has steadily decreased in comparison to non-Safe Kids targeted injuries. The most notable decreases have been seen in injuries related to bicycles, motor vehicles, pedestrians and sports.
Areas the coalition is looking at targeting in the future include accidental poisonings, ATV injuries and scald burns.

BRAGGING RIGHTS Almost beating Brad Pickett. It was a fight I took on a week’s notice because I needed some money and this was going to be his first fight in the United States. I went into the fight knowing that I would probably get beat, but he was the best in England, and I wanted to see how I did with him. I almost knocked him out with the most perfect Jump Knee I (or any one for that matter) have ever seen. Unfortunately, the referee did not stop the fight as Brad was not totally out, and he was able to come to his senses while I was further breaking his face. The fight went on and toward the end of the 1st he caught me in a nice arm bar. It was an exciting fight for me and the fans, so in the end I was happy with how it turned out.

Ophthalmologist Rolando Toyos has a clear goal for his life. It’s to give
more than he’s received. The eye surgeon comes from a long
line of teachers who helped him shape this approach to life, he said.
“All of my mentors have been professors and teachers,” said Toyos. “People I admire the most gave back to their communities and had very fulfilled lives.”
Toyos received his bachelor’s degree from Berkeley and his master’s from Stanford. But before attending medical school in Chicago, Toyos taught high school and coached basketball. His connection to community service dates all the way back to his time in Illinois for medical school in the mid-1990s. While he was at the University of Illinois, he helped the Chicago public school system develop a pre-med program.
Both Toyos and his wife, Melissa, who is also an ophthalmologist and part of the Toyos Clinic team, are members of the EyeCare America organization. EyeCare America was founded by the American Academy of Ophthalmology to provide eye exams and follow-up care for those who can’t afford treatment.
“My wife and I are big supporters of EyeCare America,” said Toyos. “We’ve always had an open practice, so we accept TennCare—we take all insurances. And the uninsured can come to us through EyeCare America. We see countless patients this way.”
Toyos also does what he can to support the Hispanic community in Memphis. The son of immigrants (his father is Cuban and his mother is Dominican), Toyos makes an effort to help Hispanic immigrants who don’t have medical insurance.
His innate capacity for giving was demonstrated in his response to an influx of patients who came to Memphis after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans in 2005.
“We started taking care of these people that had been displaced,” Toyos recalled. “Some of them needed surgery. Many of them didn’t have insurance—didn’t have anything. But we took care of them, and as it turns out, a lot of these displaced people were jazz musicians.”
Coincidentally, Toyos later received a Humanitarian Award for his efforts from the Jazz Foundation of America.
Yet despite the wide range of
recognition he has received for his work
to help the underprivileged, Toyos said
the most satisfying part of his job is
simply the appreciation he receives from
patients on a daily basis.
“The best thing I get out of this is
when patients come out of the operating
room and thank me for what I do,” said
Toyos. “There’s just no better feeling in
the world.”

During a time when news headlines paint perilous pictures of war-torn
areas around the globe, the Memphis-
based International Children’s Heart
Foundation remains committed to its
mission of saving children’s lives –
regardless of where they’re located.
Founded in 1993 by pediatric
cardiovascular surgeon Dr. William
Novick, ICHF is a nonprofit organization
that coordinates medical missions to
provide cardiac care to children in under-
resourced and conflict-ridden regions
throughout the world.
While the United States and other developed countries have hundreds of medical centers with trained specialists to care for children with heart disease, the ones in developing nations aren’t as fortunate.
That’s where ICHF steps in. During its 20-year history, the foundation has grown into a multi-faceted organization that has so far delivered life-saving surgical care to more than 7,000 children in more than 30 countries, including Ukraine, Russia, Iraq, Ecuador and Peru to name just a few.
ICHF Executive Director Terry Carter emphasizes that it takes a village, so to speak, to accomplish such a weighty task.
“While we currently employ a small staff of medical professionals stationed around the world and supported by our administrative team here in Memphis, our medical missions wouldn’t be possible without the help of countless medical volunteers in various countries, along with the contributions from individual donors, corporate partners and organizational sponsors,” Carter said. “Without their continual support, ICHF simply could not operate.”
A significant number of those
corporate partners, listed on the
foundation’s website at babyheart.org,
are located here in Memphis – among
Love knows no boundariesAmid worldwide turmoil, International Children’s Heart Foundation persists in its mission to heal hearts on a global scale Story by Erinn Figg
• One percent of the world’s population is born with heart disease, making it the most common heart defect.
• Many congenital heart defects can be repaired with one surgical intervention, while others require staged repairs.
• Fifty percent of children born with heart defects will require heart surgery at some time in their lives. Among that 50 percent, 35 percent need surgery within the first month of their lives or they will not survive.

Bret Rodriguez, president of ICHF’s
board of directors, says the collaboration
of the foundation’s staff, volunteers and
supporters illustrates the powerful impact
people can make when they join forces to
accomplish a common goal.
“ICHF is a perfect example of a
number of essential moving parts coming
together to create a life-saving operation
on a global scale. And we’re not just
saving the lives of individuals during our
medical missions — we’re saving the lives
of the generations and generations that
will follow them,” Rodriguez said. “Every

donation we receive, no matter the amount, plays a key role in these stories.”
In addition to performing the actual surgeries, the ICHF medical teams educate local healthcare professionals on how
to conduct the operations themselves, administer perioperative care for the patients and utilize new cardiac medicines and diagnostic equipment.
As for the foundation’s operations in areas of conflict, while ICHF has conducted missions in Iraq and Ukraine this year, the foundation keeps a watchful eye on emerging international developments and plans its missions accordingly.
“The safety of our staff is of the utmost importance to us,” Carter said. “We join people around the globe in their hopes and prayers that these conflicts will be resolved and these areas will soon be safer places for children, particularly those with urgent medical needs.”

About the author
Is Doctor Diet a hero or villain? What makes
a hero? A hero could be someone who saves lives or protects society from evil like Superman, but a hero could also take the form of the person you strive to be. Either way, a hero is someone who departs from society’s norms to accomplish a greater goal.
We live in a fast-paced world where diets have become the norm, and the focus has shifted to numbers (weight, BMI, calorie-counting, etc.) and appearance rather than overall health. We are accustomed to obtaining answers to questions in a single Google search or a click on the Internet. In many ways, our society prefers simple answers and fast results. For instance, Americans have spent billions of dollars supporting the diet industry, which emphasizes quick weight loss rather than long-term health. The marketing of diets is alluring, but research suggests the diet industry promises more than it can deliver in terms of lasting weight management.
Our society takes great interest in food and nutrition; however, nutrition misinformation abounds and serves as a villain, furthering the destructive diet mentality. Most nutrition-related messages come from the media, friends and family, but how often do they come
from Registered Dietitians? Furthermore, how many nutrition messages come from nutrition experts who reject diets and instead advocate a real food, non-diet approach?
What would life look like if we became our own heroes, fighting the villains who promote the dangerous diet mentality? What if we moved away from focusing on numbers as measures of success and instead focused on health, self-care, and fueling well?
Sharaze Colley, Schilling Nutrition Therapy client and blogger at “Passing Pinwheels” writes about her experiences in moving toward health and diet freedom. She states, “I haven’t had to count calories or drastically change my diet. I don’t stress. There’s almost no real limits to what I am ‘allowed’ to eat. It’s nice. And freeing.”
Rejecting diet industry villains does not have to be complicated. In fact, diets usually end up being more complicated than a real food, non-diet approach. Though this approach often takes longer and requires perseverance, it ultimately leads to a lifetime of better health, stronger metabolism, and peace with food.
Colley states, “And that’s the amazing thing. I’m eating more. I’m not starving all the time. Fad dieting tells me the opposite should be happening, that the answer is always ‘eat less, exercise more.’ But that’s not always the case…I’m starting to think it generally isn’t that simple… something I know, but
hard to actually live by because of all the
messages I get all the time about food
being the enemy.”
During the process of rejecting
the diet mentality, remember…even
Superman had his kryptonite. Likewise,
sometimes the number on the scale
or the nutrition label can become our
kryptonite, blinding us to our progress
toward health and peace with food.
Heroes are not immune to doubt,
fears, and trials, but they are willing
to face the things that scare them like
moving away from diets and numbers in
order to reach a greater goal. Don’t fall
victim to the diet mentality another day!
Become the hero who stands up to this
villain and fights for overall health and
peace with food.

Kid-Friendly Chicken Enchiladas with Black Beans and Corn

Ingredients:
1 pound chicken breasts, sautéed and cooled
1 (15.5 oz.) can low-sodium black beans, rinsed
1 (10 oz.) package frozen corn (thawed) or 1 (15 ¼ oz.) can no-salt added or low-sodium whole kernel corn, drained and rinsed
3 teaspoons salt-free mild chili powder, divided
12 taco sized whole wheat or corn tortillas
12 toothpicks
1 (14.5 oz.) can no-salt added or low-sodium tomato purée
½ cup fat-free sour cream
Cooking Instructions:1. Preheat oven to 400° F.
2. In a large bowl, add the cooled chicken. Let kids shred the chicken with their fingers. Then, have them add black beans, corn, and 1 teaspoon chili powder to bowl with chicken and let kids mix together with spoon.
3. Wrap 12 tortillas in 2 to 3 damp paper towels and heat in microwave until warm, about 1 to 1½ minutes.
4. Spray a baking dish with cooking spray. On a cutting board, place 1 warm tortilla and have kids add about 1½ spoonfuls of mixture in a line down the middle of the tortilla. Roll the tortilla up and use a toothpick to hold together. Place in the baking dish. Repeat with other tortillas.
Any extra meat mixture leftover can be poured on top of rolled tortillas.
5. In a small bowl, have kids mix 2 teaspoons chili powder, tomato purée, and sour cream. Have them stir mixture and then pour on top of rolled tortillas. Bake in oven until warmed, about 15 to 20 minutes.
Cook’s Tip : For a quicker meal, 2 cups shredded chicken from half of a rotisserie chicken or 2 (10 oz.) cans salt-free white meat chicken (drained) can be used instead of the chicken breasts.
Keep it Healthy : Make sure the chili blend is salt-free; also, since blends vary from brand to brand, taste it to check how mild it is before using.
Tips : Warming the corn tortillas in the microwave before rolling into enchiladas is a necessary step—the warmed tortillas bend nicely. Cold corn tortillas break very easily, which makes rolling into enchiladas not a success.
