LOOKING TO THE SOUTH is a handmade device of the same size and shape of my cellphone. Pointing this piece against the light, it reveals some open holes shaping the exact proportions of the constellation “Cruz del Sur” (Crux) and its adjacent part of the sky. This constellation is only visible from the southern hemisphere of the planet, and sailors used it as a navigator’s compass indicating the south pole.

This work was made during an artist residency (H) in the desert of Atacama (where my mother lives), to be sent then to Berlin (Germany), reflecting in this way a symbol of communication of the place from where I am (Chile).

This piece is made in perforated inox plate, textured by hole patterns. Where Some of them were covered letting others open, thus alluding the nature of the binary code, a logic used by programmers as a form of architecture to create and structure spaces of human meetings and interactions in the Internet.

This work must obey a condition to keep its function: To remain in the Northern hemisphere of the planet.

DAWN EYE - ZOOM is an video installation displaying the sky of sunrises of different points of the world happening in real time. Those images are broadcasted by live-stream webcams located in several countries of the world. These cameras pointing to the sky are extremely zoomed; as a kind of «macro-microscopes,» they reveal pixels and glitches highlighting the digital nature of the Internet when they broadcast natural phenomena.

The projection is displayed over a wood structure alluding to outer space communications aerials.

The main room of the exhibition space of Meinblau Projektraum has been immersed in a red, blue and green colored environment falling from the ceiling. This site-specific intervention turns the window of the main room into an augmented "pixel" by filtering the light of the sky through RGB colors changing the character of the space according to the conditions of the weather and to the position of the sun.

Red, green, and blue are the three colors constituting the pixels that structure digital screens; nowadays, the reality that, most the time, stands in front of our eyes. This functions as a representation of the filter of our perception, coming up through this ubiquitous contemporary form of communication.

This installation was presented at Thresholds, a duo show hosted by Meinblau Projektraum, Berlin, with Juan Varela and Gonzalo Reyes Araos.

RGB Paintings, a series of paintings on paper inspired by the forms of human relationships

through contemporary means of communication.

The process giving rise to these paintings seeks to analogize algorithms composing

images in LCD screens. The paper is manually painted, cut and glued in order to arrange

a raster structuring the painting.

The composition is created by technical accidents or “glitches” occurring during the

process. Some “bits” of papers fall, unglued from the support resulting in a random

lack of data, which is supplanted by the background, creating new colors and flecks of

information on a monochromatic (or three-chromatic) surface.

Red, green and blue are the colors that constitute the pixels of the digital screens;

a representation of reality, that today is most of the time in front of our eyes. These

colors function as a filter of our perception that arises through contemporary forms of

communication.

Nunc is a web-based artwork displaying the real date, time, city, country, and coordinates where the observer finds himself.

The act of observing this work results in an "infinite" collection of png images as a testimony of its existence.

This live video installation showed the sunrise in Calama, Chile, where my mother lives. It was screened during 2 hours every day along the exhibition final_draft.mov at Geumcheon Art Space ( Seoul, South Korea ), showing the exact moment when the sun rises for Chile and sets for Korea ( 6:19 am Chilean time and 6:19 pm Korean time).

Given mother and child are related by strong biological bonds and being in the opposites parts of the world, I shared physical and emotive moments in a parallel temporal and ubiquitous dimension generated by contemporary forms of communications.

This project is a 24 hours scanning of the sunlight on several places around the world, displaying a selection of open source stream webcams, broadcasted through the Internet.

Facing the Sun is an ongoing research project that attempts to "eternalize" the sunlight through the systems of contemporary forms of communication. It represents a vision of a globalized world constantly "connected" erasing boundaries of time and space.

This project is split into two main parts; the virtual part represented by a website ( http://facingthesun.net ) and the physical part, materialized by an installation.

This work shows a painting inspired by a screen shot of a Skype video conversation with my aunt. During the conversation, she was in the Chilean mountains and me in Berlin. Because of the precarious connection and signal interferences, the image was completely abstract.

The image is an oil painting on paper, painted nine times in different colors, cut, mixed and glued in order to be recomposed, simulating the methods of transmission of digital information by the Internet. After this process, the image was put back to a screen, highlighting the importance of the medium over the message, referring thereby to Marshall McLuhan’s statement “the medium is the message”.

Lightheart is an interactive installation displaying a circle of light projected on a wall. It reacts to the stimulus of the changement of light in the space and the movements of the audience on the spot. It is presented as an organism living on its own and made of a peculiar material, a digital material.
