GONZAGA UNIVERSITY / BULLDOGS / WOMEN’S SOCCER

Watkins was named head coach of Gonzaga women’s soccer in December of 2016. In his first season as head coach, the Zags reached the 10-win plateau for the first time since 2007. It was only the sixth time in program history that GU reached double-digit wins a season. The Bulldogs had the best start to a season in program history, and broke several team records. Gonzaga scored the most goals (39), made the most assists (30), totaled the most points (108) and took the most shots (312) in a single season in program history in 2017.

Watkins was a member of the BYU coaching staff since 1996. In 2013, he was promoted to associate head coach and helped guide the Cougars to a Top-5 national ranking last season, before ending the year in the Sweet 16. Since being promoted to associate head coach, BYU has amassed a record of 47-11-6. The Cougars have appeared in five straight NCAA Tournaments and won five consecutive West Coast Conference titles.

As a BYU assistant coach, Watkins helped the Cougars to 17 trips to the NCAA Tournament, earning a No. 1 seed in 2012 -- the program’s highest seed ever. BYU finished 2003 and 2012 ranked fifth in the country. The Cougars were No. 9 in the final NSCAA Coaches’ Poll last season. Watkins was hired as an assistant at BYU in 1996.

During his time with the BYU women, the Cougars have won 13 conference championships, made the NCAA Tournament 18 times, includ-ing two appearances in the Elite Eight and five in the Sweet 16. BYU has finished in the national Top 25 17 times and boasts a 343-90-36 record since 1996. The Cougars have had 21 NSCAA All-Americans and seven Academic All-Americans while Watkins was a member of the staff.

Watkins was also the head coach for the BYU men’s soccer team from 1995 to 2015, compiling an overall record of 304-103-75 over the 21-year span. The men’s soccer team dominated the Collegiate Club Soccer Championships, winning National Championships in 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2001, including an unprecedented run of 30 straight victories at the Club National Championships.

Seeking a more competitive environment, Watkins was the driving force behind BYU’s decision to move from collegiate club to semi-pro status in 2003. BYU purchased a Premier Development League franchise, becoming the first university sponsored soccer program to ever acquire a franchise that competes at a level considered higher than NCAA soccer. The team competed in the USL Premier Development League where it reached the Final Eight twice. Under Watkins, the Cougars are the only university to participate in the U.S. Open Cup which they have done three times.

Watkins played for the semi-professional Salt Lake City Flamengo team from 1992 to 1995. He also played for the Utah Blitzz in 2002, and scored the golden goal to win the Western Conference title.

During college, Watkins played at Drake University and held the single-season scoring record. He later received a degree from BYU in psychology. In high school, he was the Gatorade Player of the Year in his home state of Kansas.

Patiño was the head coach at Southern Virginia University for three seasons, where he helped the Knights set new program records. In 2016, SVU set a record low number of goals allowed since joining the NCAA.

Before Southern Virginia, he had tremen-dous success as a member of the Utah Celtic FC girls’ soccer coaching staff. He helped guide the U16 Celtic team to a 25-game win streak and eventual 2013 Utah state championship.

With Celtic FC, Patiño helped identify, se-lect, recruit and develop players. His duties also included scouting opponents, developing practice and game plans and guiding players through the college recruiting process.

A member of the Brigham Young University men’s soccer team from 2008-12, Patiño graduated from BYU with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and wellness in December 2012.

In November 2013, Patiño was chosen by the Utah Olympic Development Program to help select the state’s top 40 youth soccer players.

Brown came to Gonzaga after spending two seasons as an assistant at Utah Valley Uni-versity. In her first season as an assistant coach at Utah Valley in 2015, Brown helped the Wolverines to their most successful season in school history. The team won a school-record 14 matches, went unbeaten (9-0-1) at home, won the WAC Tournament championship and made its first-ever appearance at the NCAA Tournament.

As a student-athlete, Brown led Utah Valley to 13 wins in 2014 and anchored the Wolverine defense to a school-record nine shutouts. Her defensive effort earned her WAC Defensive Player of the Year and first team all-WAC honors.

Brown played in 80 matches for UVU, making a school-record 75 starts. She regis-tered seven goals, eight assists, 22 points, 115 shots and 48 shots on goal during her time at UVU. She was a two-time all-conference honoree.

Brown was also impressive in the classroom, earning three academic all-conference honors. She graduated magna cum laude with a degree in exercise science and outdoor recreation from Utah Valley in 2015.

Player of the WeekMiciah Madison, Jr., F, San Francisco- Madison played a part in both of the Dons’ game-winning goals over the week-end as USF went 2-0 to extend its win-ning streak to three straight. The junior tallied her first goal of the season in the first half Friday against UC Santa Barba-ra. She stuck her leg out on a bouncing ball inside the box to send it in the air and over the Gaucho goalkeeper for the score from 12-yards out. That goal would go on to be the game-winner as USF shut out the Gauchos, 2-0. With just 10 seconds left in double overtime Sunday versus New Mexico, Madison dribbled the ball down the right side line into the corner, where she crossed it low to the center, finding the foot of teammate Autumn Smithers for the overtime winner.

Also Nominated: Bella Folina, BYU; Sam Heilman, Gonzaga; Beth Burgess, Pa-cific; Jordyn Cunningham, Saint Mary’s; Maria Sanchez, Santa Clara

The Last Time OutGONZAGA 2, Cal Poly 1 (OT)Game 7 * Sept. 7 * Luger Field

SPOKANE, Wash. – Madeline Gotta has scored goals before for Gonzaga wom-en’s soccer, and she will find the net more times in her collegiate career, but her game-winning goal Friday, will be one to remember. The Zags’ junior struck a ball from deep to the top corner of the net to give GU the 2-1 overtime victory against Cal Poly. Gonzaga (3-1-1) took 30 shots in the first 90 minutes of the game, but the 31st just into overtime was the winner. The Bulldogs’ 31 shots were the most taken since shooting 30 times against CSU Bakersfield on Aug. 22, 2014. GU finished with a 31-14 advantage in shots Friday, placing 11 on goal. Cal Poly had three shots on frame. The Mustangs’ Michaela Olney scored her first goal of the season on a loose ball in the box in the 39th minute. Olney drove in a ball that was punched out by the Bulldogs’ goalkeeper off of a corner from Emily Talmi. The Zags’ India Jencks moved in the program’s Top-10 with her 12th career goal in the 67th minute. She scored the equalizer on a pass that slid through the defense, before kicking it low to the far post. Gabriela Maas and Maddie Cooley were credited with assists. Almost three minutes into overtime, Taylor Kernion passed a ball to Sophia Viviano, who then kicked a ball back outside the 18-yard box, where Gotta one-timed a strike to the upper-right hand corner of the net. It was the San Diego, Calif. native’s fifth-career goal, and first of the season. Viviano finished with seven shots, while Jencks took five. Isabel Jones made a pair of saves for the Bulldogs. Sophia Brown stopped eight shots for Cal Poly (0-4-2). MacKenzie George led the Mustangs with four shots.
