June 2003 – Feb 2008 AWA ALCOA, Anglesea Power station Power Station Engineer/ Acting Maintenance and Shutdown Manager AustraliaAs the Power Station Engineer working from within the Engineering Department providing engineering expertise, business knowledge and personal capabilities to support the operational and manufacturing process of Anglesea power Station. One of the key roles has been supporting the continuous improvement process to achieve the organisation’s production, cost and quality objectives.This has been by: Acting as a catalyst in the implementation of change and innovation to identify and support the

achievement of cost reduction and productivity improvement opportunities. Leading and contributing to the ongoing enhancement and development of processes and equipment

associated with the production of power by identifying and investigating opportunities for improvement.

Leading and contributing to the achievement of an environmentally sound, safe and healthy workplace by monitoring and auditing the design, installation and maintenance of equipment and systems to comply with all ALCOA and Australian relevant standards and regulations.

Coordinating delivery of engineering solutions and funds management that are outcomes of equipment improvement initiatives and activities.

Another important role has been to provide support to work teams and tradespeople and other professional staff through the provision of engineering advice, functional guidance and by sharing discipline or area related expertise.

My most recent activity has been in the role of acting Maintenance and Shutdown manager. The Maintenance and Shutdown Manager is responsible for developing and implementing maintenance strategies across the site and for managing all maintenance activities including equipment reliability as well as predictive and preventative maintenance of all assets.

Key areas of responsibility have included: Leading and developing resources through effective coaching, planning and organisation. Improving equipment performance and reliability with an emphasis on quantity and timeliness of

output, ensuring all facets of the location's maintenance program are delivered as per plan and in accordance with customer expectations;

Achieving cost effective maintenance and equipment operations by maintaining asset capability so that manufacturing targets are met in a timely manner;

Ensuring the workplace is safe and without risk to health, hygiene and environmental impact by providing leadership on all EH&S issues by maintaining equipment integrity and implementing strategic and tactical improvement initiatives.

Being immersed in the ALCOAN safety culture for the 3 ½ years I have worked at Anglesea Power Station, has heightened my safety awareness and highlighted the need to be proactive and imaginative to stop complacency from getting a foothold in the way EH & S is treated. I believe E.H & S issues always need to be kept as the precursor to how we do everything in our day-to-day business. It is with this philosophy, based on a risk analysis structure that the best balance between EH & S and business manufacturing performance targets can be achieved.

Well control situations were encountered numerous times demanding that the BOP and relevant well control equipment worked faultlessly over prolonged periods.

ThailandExploration and development wells. Most of these holes were drilled using slim-hole technology, and were completed very quickly with an average of two to three wells being completed in a month. On some occasions four wells were completed in a month, creating a very stressful environment when having to ensure that the subsea equipment was ready for the following well with only 24 to 36 hrs. between rig moves. Despite this tight schedule, the campaign was very successful, with very few equipment failures resulting in down time.

Jan 1994 – Dec 1994 B.H. P. / Benguela Joint Venture Operations Superintendent – Geomaster M.V.: Drillship South Africa / Namibia6 monthly contract work.BHP Australia formed a joint venture with a local South African offshore diamond mining company, to evaluate the offshore diamond field on the west coast of South Africa for future major mining possibilities. A Dynamic positioned ship was charted and fitted with big hydraulically driven boring/sampling machines, a heavy mineral separating plant and an x-ray diamond-sorting machine. In conjunction with a big geological team, this vessel was used to try and evaluate how rich the diamond deposits were on the west coast of South Africa.I joined the project at the phase when the ship was being fitted with all the equipment, and my offshore oil field experience was used to install and commission the equipment to be able to successfully complete the tasks required.I was managing the operation and staff contingent of over 40 persons onboard the diamond exploration ship, "Geomaster M.V." Developed and implemented operational procedures and guidelines, OH & S procedures and

guidelines, planned maintenance schedules and guidelines, including stock inventory control. Developed and implemented continues improvement policies and strategies to ensure that the

equipment and plant operated safely, efficiently and with as little down time or operational failures as possible.

Here, I learned the basic workshop skills working in the practical environment with the artisans on the plant. I also completed courses, learning in conjunction with the trainee artisans, working on lathes, milling machines, mechanical and fluid drive couplings, learning the art of white metal bearings and alignment, and invaluable basic workshop tools training.Once my studies were completed, I was promoted and moved to Tutuka power Station where I worked as a mechanical technician in the maintenance department. Here I put all my training into practical use and was responsible for the mechanical maintenance of one of the six, 600 MW generation units. This included supervising six artisans, working with a computerized planned maintenance system and ensuring that all the work was done under the strict guidelines of a five star NOSA safety rating.
