Fall is upon us and hopefully
everyone is back into the rou-
tine of school. The PTA is also
getting into the swing of
things. We need your help.
There are 3 ways you can
help PTA.
Please join the PTA by filling
out your membership form
and return it with your pay-
ment so you can be counted as
a member of the Gombert
PTA. Membership has its
privileges such as voting at
meetings and a student direc-
tory which will soon be sent to
all members.
Support our October 23rd
Go Go Gatorthon on Octo-
ber 23rd from 9:00am-
11:00am. Sponsor your child
and help your child find
friends, neighbors and relatives
to support them. This is a
great opportunity to spend
time as a family and get some
exercise while supporting a
great cause-our children. Vol-
unteer to help at the walk-
athon.
Volunteer for Monster Bash
which is October 29th from
6:30-8:30pm. This is one of
our largest social events and we
need tons of volunteers to
make it enjoyable for everyone
who attends. We are also seek-
ing donations of wrapped
candy and baked goods for the
cake walk.
I want to say thanks to all who
have helped at our events this
last month. Thanks to those
who came to our first meeting.
We truly appreciate your time
and input.
As always, I welcome your
comments and suggestions.

Gombert PTA and IPPC Coat Drive In conjunction with the Indian
Prairie Parents’ Council, the
Gombert PTA is collecting
new and gently used coats dur-
ing the month of October .
Coats will be shared with those
in need at the schools partici-
pating in the coat drive. As
you prepare for the cold
weather, consider donating the
coats and jackets your children
no longer use. Coats may be
dropped off at the office. The
deadline for donating a coat is
October 28th.
Your support is greatly appre-
ciated.

Nobody can do everything,
but everybody can do
something and together
we can do it all. :)
Dear Gombert Families,
October is here and it is
hard to believe we have
nearly reached the end
of the first quarter—
where did the time go?
The last few weeks have seen a lot of
activity here at Gombert as our stu-
dents have settled back into the daily
routine, made new friends, and gotten
to know their new teachers. This
month promises to be a busy one too
with school pictures, a special visit
from former Miss Iowa, Abby Curran,
the Walkathon, and the Monster
Mash Bash closing out the month.
We congratulate our music teacher,
Mrs. May-Hutchison, who applied for
and recently received a $1000 grant
from the Dart Container Foundation!
The grant will be used to purchase
Hawaiian instruments for our music
program. We cannot wait to see the
new instruments in the hands of our
kids.
We also congratulate fourth grade
teacher Mrs. Rodriguez who secured a
$500 grant to support our National
Walk to School Day this month. Us-
ing the grant, Mrs. Rodriguez will be
purchasing some exciting prizes to be
raffled off at the walkathon! In addi-
tion to the grant, Gombert will receive
Name: Jeremy Ricken
Family: Married 14 years to Tania. We have 2 children, Paul (8) and Ellie (6).
Pets: Lilo, our 6 month old Boston Terrier
Favorite Book: The Lord of the Rings
Favorite Movie: Star Wars
Favorite Superhero: Superman
Favorite Sport: Golf (to play) and football (to watch)
Cubs or Sox? Cubs of course.
Hobbies/Interests Mainly spending time with my family.
As a child I wanted to be __________________when I grew up my parents were both teachers, so I suppose it was inevitable. My sister and I played ―school‖ quite a bit as kids. We even had a blackboard in the basement.
What are you most looking forward to at Gombert ? Becoming part of a community with a tremendous reputation for being child centered.

Congratulations Gators Skate Night was a great success! We collected 600 pounds of food for the Loaves and Fishes Pantry and $31.00
in donations. The Operations Manager for the pantry extended a large thank you to the Gators and their families. Congratulations on the
great team work and thanks to all the families who attended Skate Night for making it a fun and successful event! GO GATORS!

REFLECTIONS PROJECTS ARE DUE OCTOBER 15th. THE DROP OFF BOX IS LOCATED IN THE LMC.
REFLECTIONS REMINDER
nutrition bars, bottled water, and tea to support the walkathon.
With the fall weather now upon us, I want to remind everyone to send students
dressed appropriately for the autumn temperatures. Outdoor recess is becom-
ing gradually more chilly and windy every week, and we want to be sure every-
one is warm enough out there. Thank you for your help!
As always, please do not hesitate to contact us at Gombert if you ever have a
question, concern, or especially a success to share. Thank you for your contin-
ued support!
Sincerely,
Jeremy Ricken

Be sure to mark your calendar and come to our
first ever Go Go Gatorthon Walk for Fun(ds)!
Saturday, October 23rd from 9:00-11:00AM, we’ll be walking around the school to
raise money for our PTA. There will be music, prizes, fresh
air, and exercise! More information will be coming home
soon along with a pledge sheet & envelope. Help your child
collect pledges from family & friends, then come out on the
23rd and walk. It’s that easy and there’s nothing to deliver!
The walk-a-thon is replacing our usual wrapping
paper/home goods fall fundraiser, so we need your
help to make our Go Go Gatorthon a success!
Can’t make it out on the morning of the 23rd? You
can still participate! Be sure to check out the in-
formation packet coming home soon.
If you have any questions or would like to volun-
teer, please email [email protected] or call

Hello Stargazers! Happy Autumn! Fall is a wonderful time of year to stargaze. At night, the Great Square
of Pegasus is visible high in the south with the planet Jupiter below. Jupiter is the bright-
est object in the sky after the moon. It looks like a star to our eyes, but with a telescope
or binoculars you can see this gas giant and its four large moons. Speaking of Jupiter, if you were able to join us for September’s Family Night, the Naperville Astronomical Asso-
ciation volunteers brought over a dozen telescopes! The skies were perfect. Visitors saw
Jupiter and its moons, the Ring Nebula, Uranus, the Moon, and more! We will schedule
another telescope night for a Family Night in spring. Stay tuned for details. Trick-or-Treat! October 31st happens to be the halfway point between fall and winter.
The autumnal equinox in September marked the beginning of fall. Outside we notice the
cooler temperatures and the shortening daylight. The Sun is rising later and setting ear-
lier every day. We see the least amount of daylight on the winter solstice (beginning of winter) in December. Halloween is the halfway point between the autumnal equinox and
the winter solstice. Hundreds of years ago, Celtic people in Ireland celebrated this date
rather than the equinox and solstice with a festival they called Samhain. Their festival
marked the end of harvest season, but also the transition from light to dark and life to
death. According to ancient Celtic folklore, the spirits of the dead would return on this date. To celebrate, people would wear masks and light bonfires. The festival was later
brought to the US by Irish immigrants and transformed into today’s trick-or-treating. Calling all music lovers! This fall the WVHS Planetarium and the WVHS Student Video
Club will bring Laser Light Shows to the planetarium for the first time ever! These full-dome musical experiences will be available for a limited time – October 15 to November
5. Shows include Pink Floyd, the Best of the Beatles, Classic Rock, Led Zeppelin, and Hal-
loween Fright. The shows are appropriate for ages 10 and up. Tickets are $4. Get your
tickets early! Ticket pre-sales will be on October 13 & October 14 from 5-7pm only (at the planetarium). All other ticket sales will take place during the scheduled shows. Visit the
website for more information. Thank you for your continued support of the WVHS Planetarium. Keep Looking Up! Stephanie Rybka [email protected]

Super Science Parent Volunteers Needed We would like to begin our Super Science experiments in the 2nd and 4th grade classes during the month of October. However, we are in need of parent volunteers for each of the 2nd and 4th grade classrooms.
What is Super Science?
A PTA sponsored program, which brings 3-4 experiments to our 2nd and 4th graders each year. The experiments are done by our parent volunteers. They are fun, easy to do, and the kids love them.
If I am a parent volunteer what do I have to do?
Be willing to go into your child's classroom once or twice during the school year, and do a hands-on science experiment with the stu-dents in your child's class (or another class if you would like to volunteer, but don't have a 2nd or 4th grader this year). The experiments are about one hour long, and each one comes with detailed instructions for the parent volunteer. Important: You do not have to be an expert in any area of science to conduct these experiments. Just be willing to go into your child's classroom and have fun!
How do I volunteer?
Just e-mail Natalie Hickey at [email protected] Be sure to mention your child's name and classroom. Once I have enough parent volunteers, I will e-mail you back with more details...

Dear Parent: The Helping Hand Program was established in 1967 through combined efforts of the Naperville Junior Woman’s Club, School District 203, and the Naperville Police Department. District 204 later became a part of this program. The purpose of the Helping Hand Program is to have adult assistance available in an emergency situation, such as a child being lost, frightened, injured, or ill. The police department encourages Helping Hand households to display the Helping Hand sign year-round as a crime deterrent similar to the Neighborhood Watch Program. If a child comes to your door needing assistance, you would be asked to comply with the following rules: Call the police immediately if a child comes to your door that is seriously injured,
ill, lost, or frightened. In case of injury or illness, do not administer any first aid except to restore
breathing or stop excessive bleeding. Do not offer any food, beverage, or medication. The child may be allergic or diabetic.
Do not transport the child in your car.
You can help support this program in two ways ;(1) Tell your child about the Helping Hand Program and; (2) Volunteer to be a Helping Hand household. Helping Hand is a volunteer program and can only succeed and be of benefit to our children if you are willing to help. If you do not have a Helping Hand sign on your block, please consider becoming a Helping Hand volunteer, the Helping Hand sign is a white hand on a red background. Your assistance is not only needed, but also greatly appreciated! Please return the completed application to your school office or to:

Student Council News
Let the year begin as Student Council is off and running.
Did you know the Student Council has their very own Blog? This will help with all upcoming events and
spirit days. Check us out on Gombert Elementary Home page; click on the left side—Academics; go to 5th grade;
the 5th grade Blog (highlighted in blue); scroll down on the right side to ―Other Gator Blogs‖ and click on Gom-
bert Student Council. There you will find information about our October 16th Rummage/Bake Sale to be held
from 9:30 am- 3:00 pm. This year, money from the Bake Sale will benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities. We
encourage everyone to please bake (if they can) or come to purchase some of our yummy treats! You will also find
information about Red Ribbon Week, October 23-29. That will be a week filled with the spirit to be Drug-free!
iswamp???? I’ve heard of iphone, ipod, and ipad, but NOT iswamp. What is iswamp? It’s a school theme
that Student Council will be launching. I Study, Work And Make Progress. We will have banners and posters up
around the school reminding students that with a little studying and work, they can make progress both in academ-
ics and self-esteem.
