ed by SportOutlier Foundation. Spor-tOutlier Foundation is an organization engrained in connecting community, car-ing for youth athletic development, and providing health and wellness education. SportOutlier Foundation proudly pres-ents the Night with Olympians Dinner as a charity fundraiser to improve health and wellness education, and amateur athletic opportunities for underserved youth. Your contributions will be applied to the growth of stimulating educational and athletic programming for youth who are fighting childhood obesity through healthy sport alternatives.

We are happy to invite Olympians from the greater San Diego area for a celebra-tion and dinner. Many of our Olympic guests currently or have trained at the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, and are members of the community.

These athletes exemplify being a Spor-tOutlier! Individually they have excelled outside of normal sport performance and beyond the ordinary in order to maximize personal talent and opportunities. Each one of these extraordinary individuals has learned how to maximize their skills and deal with adversity in order to overcome challenges and obtain successful out-comes. Even more, they have donated

their time to share their personal stories and experiences for the development of sport and youth athleticism.

The Night with Olympians Dinner is thankful to have such leaders among us in the community. Join me in welcoming our Olympians and Olympic athletes as we contribute to accomplishing the goals of SportOutlier Foundation.

Together we will design and integrate health and wellness education into amateur athletics with the objective of improving the opportunities for under-served youth to fight childhood obesity and compete in sports. Together we can increase the number of SportOutliers who excel outside of normal sport perfor-mance and influence athletic culture with exceptional style and character!

attitude iS eVerYtHing by Ross Flowers, Ph.D.

The process of human change can be challenging. Most people are

willing to hear the opinions of others or the findings of proven research. Yet, how many of us are willing to really listen to the messages that we encounter.

Listening is different that hearing. When we really listen our attention is heightened. We focus on the content and context of the message that we are receiving. With this heightened attention it is more likely that we will analyze or critique the message. Then, we begin to develop greater awareness.

Awareness is more a factor of letting go of conditioned responses and allowing ourselves to digest new experiences without resistance. Awareness may or may not be defined in observable changes. For example, you can be aware of your own prejudices and stereotypical beliefs and not do a thing to change how you interact with a person who fits the mold of these prejudices and stereotypical beliefs. However, developing greater awareness may promote learning. A clear indication of learning is the evolution of hearing to listening and understanding in order to make a change in your behavior.

Change may manifest differently within each individual. Yet, change ultimately begins within each of us. We all have the potential for change, but some may lack the motivation. We all desire positive results from our efforts, but some may lack the commitment or foresight. Many of us are even willing to work hard and to pay the price to achieve success, but some lack the ability to sacrifice.

Change may manifest physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually. It is our individual challenge to open ourselves to the process of change and be willing to accept change in its different forms. The challenge is ours to put our unique human potential and ability into action and to accept

change as it comes. So, the question is asked….”How do you accept change when change appears to be too difficult?”

Open your mind, body, heart, and spirit to the opportunity for growth. One thing that determines the level of our potential, that produces the intensity of our activity, and that predicts the quality of the result we receive is our attitude. We have the power to predict, control, and adjust our attitude.

Attitude can and should be internally motivated and maintained. Specifically, we have the internal power to manifest our attitude into whatever we would like. Attitude does not have to be predicted or determined by the weather, a boss, a co-worker, or the traffic. These are all external factors and are all inevitable happenings that will distract us from what is in our ability to control. We can control our emotions, concentration, enthusiasm, and motivation to enjoy the pleasures of life.

We also have the power to change our attitude. We do not have to accept the miseducation of the misinformed or ignorant. We do not have to subject ourselves to negative sources of influence or negative thinking. No one can control our attitude unless we voluntarily surrender that control. If you do care about yourself, accept full responsibility for your ability to change and live with your feelings of choice. Protect yourself from unwanted or undesirable feelings that have the capacity to heighten the pains in life, and strengthen your desirable feelings that increase comfort, confidence, and enthusiasm for life.

Having the right attitude is one of the basics that success requires. A positive attitude about our ability to affect the world around us and ourselves gives us an inner strength that influences our ability to create change. Your power to create a process of change will allow you to celebrate a healthy attitude of choice and enjoy the fruits of your labor and the pleasures of existence.

Responsibility to Change by Ross Flowers, Ph.D.

“I suppose I was the only person who thoughtI had a chance.” - Bill Mills, Gold Medallist

How many of us have a relative, partner, close friend, or associate who we hear

constantly talk about what they want to do or what they look forward to doing when… If we could only count the number of times that we’ve heard people we know say these words. And what is our usual response to these words of aspiration and futuristic fantasy, “yeah,

wouldn’t that be nice” or “yeah, life would be good then.” But often time goes by, our attention changes to something else and we tend to forget and move on to our next futuristic fantasy.

What if instead of wishing, hoping, and dreaming about the what if ’s, the possibilities, and the should of, could of, would of scenarios, we were to take control of our lives and create opportunities for ourselves to make those futuristic fantasies reality. No really!! Each one of us has the opportunity(ies) to create change. But change may require making initial sacrifices to create developmental opportunities and access for growth. However, making the initial sacrifices may be the greatest challenge.

For example, Allen is a 20-year-old male who has a group of friends he hangs out with. They all watch out for each other and provide the support and encouragement of a family. Allen realizes that his energy and commitment to spending time with his family and friends is overshadowing the time and energy he spends studying for school and being a father to his own son. Allen is always talking about one day being a civil engineer and being able to buy a house and support his family. His friends even tell Allen that he should be studying and learning about his opportunities to pursue civil engineering, rather than hanging out. Yet, Allen finds it difficult to leave his friends to better himself because he fears losing his respected connections with his boys and possibly missing something. What Allen doesn’t seem to realize is that he’s missing a lot more because of his fear to make sacrifices in order to pursue his possible future reality.

Allen’s fear is real. It’s hard to change what is comfortable and reliable. So Allen, just like the rest of us may benefit from asking himself three questions: (1) why do I want to pursue a future possibility (being a civil engineer); (2) what are my strengths and; (3) what motivates me. The responses to these three questions will help Allen and the rest of us: (1) recognize our future fantasy as a future reality, (2) identify our individual attributes which will make fantasy a reality, and (3) realize the

forces and sources that will encourage us to pursue our future reality. In addition to these responses, if we set clear, attainable, specific and realistic short-term goals, which transcend into achieving outcome goals, we have increased our opportunity to successfully reach our desired position of change.

Determining a course of action from our strengths and our internal motivators is a great start. However, something is still missing. In order for Allen to successfully make the changes to meet his outcome goal of being a civil engineer, who takes care of his family in his own home, Allen needs to take ownership of his commitment to change and his responsibility to achieve his set goals. Allen needs to take responsibility for himself and his son through the decisions and commitments he makes. If Allen wants to make his future fantasy a reality, he will have to take responsibility for his own desire and passion and ability to make dreams come true. Fantasy does not become reality through hoping, wishing, and avoiding change. Yes change can be difficult. Change requires breaking the norm, going out on a limb even facing our fears.

Fear may be one of the main reasons why we don’t pursue our dreams or aspirations. We fear the unknown, the possibilities, the options of success or failure, our own insecurities, our lack of awareness, challenges, commitment, or all of these at the same time. Our fear is maintained by avoiding the possible or perceived danger. But, what is the danger? What is it that you’re really afraid of ? By asking and answering these questions you may have just identified the greatest obstacle in your life. Having identified the challenge you have provided access to approaching your fear and reducing the perceived threat. Without the fear of a possible threat, you will gain confidence in your ability to meet challenges, manage and overcome additional fears and work towards your desired success.

Taking personal responsibility to approach and manage your fears will also increase your level of confidence and comfort to change. With confidence and comfort towards making changes you have added additional strengths to your repertoire of positive attributes. These feelings of confidence, comfort and strength in yourself and your abilities are internal motivational sources of energy. You now have the internal motivation to not only pursue why you want to make your future fantasy a reality, but you also have the internal motivation of belief in yourself and your ability to take personal responsibility and to face your fears. These characteristics can help Allen achieve his goal of finishing his education to become a civil engineer who is able to support his family in his own home. These characteristics can help us all develop greater inner strength and self-confidence to change or improve our current situation.

Each participant will leave with a greater awareness of elite perfor-mance and an understanding of why participating in sport at any level is a great privilege.
