Well-run and a lovely “only inFrance” chateau clubhouse. Easy walking. Tenmiles north-east of Dinan and 18 miles south-east of Dinard.

FOREST

This is a delightful “low-key” clubtucked away in the countrysidenear Rennes.

Short but with a sting in the tail of many of itsholes, Freslonniere is a visual treat and willtest the mettle of even the finest drivers. Infact, the forest and flowers are so close onsome holes, it’s best to take a mid-iron andpray!

Family-owned, this is one of our favourites andis worth the drive even if you’re staying inDinard - particularly if you make time to visitold Rennes afterwards. Easy walking. Fivemiles west of Rennes and 30 miles south ofDinan.

With 45 holes of terrific parklandgolf, La Baule is one of the majorplayers in French golf.

Opinions vary as to which of the two 18-holecourses is better. Designed by Dave Thomas,Michel Gayon and Peter Alliss, you can’t gowrong. Much of the course is fairly generouswith wide bunkers and gently contouredgreens – a design which most players will taketo and thus a good game is promised.

The verdant, tree-lined fairways make for easywalking and the lake holes and relaxedambience are more than distracting. Wellmaintained, this is a seriously slick golf clubfrom the first tee to the wonderful clubhouse.

On the splendid beach at the smartest end ofthe resort, there are 207 superb bedrooms. The Manoir de Kertalg provides a“home from home” atmosphere inluxurious surroundings.

There are nine very pretty bedrooms (the onesin the tower are our favourite, but they aresmaller) and the service is at just the rightlevel. The lounges are also impressive and alarge terrace adjoins the gardens.

Overlooking the River Belon, a chateau and 87hectares of woodland, Kertalg is a haven oftranquillity but also close to two of the bestcourses and the port of Pont-Aven.

It’s probably the toughest course in westernBrittany but you won’t mind making bogeyswith holes and views this good. Starting andending with parkland holes and well plannedhazards, there is also some marvellous linksrunning alongside the dramatic coastline inbetween. Best described as target golf by thesea! Great fun and one of our favourites. Hugeclubhouse and the restaurant is popular withnon-playing locals...Always a good sign! Fairlyeasy walking. Eight miles west of Lorient.

This is a renowned course, havinghosted the French PGAChampionship several times.

Play sensibly off the tee and avoid the well-placed oaks and chestnut trees and then go forbroke to the very well-protected greens. Ifyou’re driving well, you might be tempted tocut a couple of corners but “straight and true“will win the day as there are too many hazardsto deal with by luck. The good clubhouse offersgreat views of the course. Hilly in parts. Sevenmiles west of Lorient, 16 miles west of Auray.
