A Message from the Manager

For information on Skokie Park District golf programs, call (847) 674-1500, ext. 3100www.SkokieParkDistrict.org

Good day!

With the 2011 golf season almost upon us, exciting changes are coming to the Weber Park Golf Course. Beginning in April, the adjacent Skatium Ice Arena will undergo major renovation. As part of that project, the golf course will be the recipient of a new golf office and cart area, scheduled for completion in the fall. If you happen to see construction around the course, rest assured it will be open for business throughout the spring and summer. If you’re a frequent visitor to the Skokie Sports Park golf range and, or the Weber Park Golf Course, you can save by purchasing one of our two annual memberships, this year offered at drastically reduced prices. (See page 13 for details.) While our Sports Park golf range offers year-round, state-of-the-art hitting stations, Sports Park is also home to three professional golf instructors. Inside of this publication, (pages 1, 6-7) our PGA staff, headed by Director of Instruction Chris Pytell, offer tips to improve your game and your swing. Our top teaching pros are known throughout Chicagoland as both knowledgeable and courteous.

Finally, if you have a junior golfer interested in playing high school golf someday, the Skokie Park District can begin to prepare your grade school golfer this summer. In 2011, the Niles West High School golf team was led by freshman Nathaniel Lee, who qualified for the annual state tournament. Nathaniel’s home practice facilities are Skokie Sports Park and Weber Park Golf Course. Nathaniel was also a participant in the Skokie Park District’s junior travel league, over several years prior to his freshman year. So don’t wait until the summer before high school begins to learn how to play. Take advantage of the Skokie Park District’s excellent junior golf programs in order to be ready for your high school try-out. I look forward to seeing you at our two facilities – Skokie Sports Park, annually named “one of the top 100 golf practice centers and learning facilities in America” by Golf Range Magazine – and the Weber Park Golf Course. If you have any new ideas that will make your golf experience better at the Skokie Park District, please drop me a line at [email protected]. Thanks again for considering the Skokie Park District for your golfing needs!

Chris Pytell is in his twelfth year as the PGA Director of Golf Instruction at Skokie Sports Park. Since 1994, he has fueled his passion for teaching by conducting over 15,000 individual and group lessons. A Chicago native, Chris won a number of junior golf tournaments and at 17, played in a national junior tournament with Tiger Woods. Since graduating from Southern Illinois University on a golf scholarship, Chris continues to play in 10-15 PGA tournaments annually, his best finish is third in a PGA tournament at Flossmoor Country Club. His personal best score was a 58 on a par 66. Chris believes that by maintaining his competitive edge, he will help his students achieve their full potential. Chris has helped many junior golfers mature into competitive collegiate golfers. He enjoys instructing men, women, and junior golfers of all levels. Because he believes that the learning process accelerates when golf is taught at a simple level, his lessons concentrate on the fundamentals of the game.

“All golfers should take lessons from a PGA Instructor in order to understand the fundamentals and how they are needed to create a more consistent golf swing,” says Chris. “Everyone can improve with a little patience — and by practicing the right principles.”

To schedule a lesson, call Chris at (773) 505-GOLF (4653).

Meet Chris Pytell, Skokie Park District PGA Professional

by Chris Pytell, PGA Director of Golf Instruction, Skokie Sports Park

A full turn – or rotation – is the center piece of the golf swing. A full turn promotes a good swing path and an effortless flow during the swing. Conversely, a lack of rotation can cause many problems - one being the dreaded slice. The golf club should be moved with these major muscles: shoulders, back, chest, and abs. These muscles must be rotating as one, in order to create an effective golf swing. I want to share with you two drills in order to help you use these muscles to create a better full turn.

Drill #1In this drill, place a long iron or driver across your back. Hold it at both ends. Use a broom stick at home if a club isn’t long enough. Rotate your torso so that the club is pointing down in the middle of your stance. This drill will maximize your power and increase your range of motion. Hold this position regularly for 15-30 seconds while you practice and at home. Be careful and stretch slowly. Drill #2 The focus of this drill is to create a full turn with a ¾ back swing. A compact swing will create power and control. With only your left arm, swing the club to the top of the backswing. The club shaft should not be parallel with the ground. In this position, gently push the palm of your left hand away from your body. You should feel great extension without tension. Do not lock your left arm. Hold this position for 2-3 seconds with a 7 iron, then swing. This drill will be a tricky if you use a ball. John Daly warms up before every round with this drill. After 5-10 minutes, swing with both arms. Don’t be surprised if you feel an increase in your turn and a decrease in your score.

As always, remember to have fun when you golf !

Learn like a pro to play like oneby Scott Barla, PGA Professional, Skokie Park District

Even the best players on the PGA Tour take lessons from teaching golf pros. In addition, research shows that amateur golfers lower their handicap by an average of 4.5 strokes in one year after taking a lesson from a professional (Golf Magazine, Sept. 2009).

Amateur golfer’s average handicaps have remained the same since 1960. It is probably no coincidence that according to a 2011 Golf Magazine reader survey, only 12 percent of readers said they took a lesson in the past year. Golf is an expensive sport. Considering greens fees, equipment, travel expenses and playing time, one of the least expensive investments in your game is a lesson with a trained teaching professional. While reading golf magazines, watching instructional videos or picking up tips from playing partners may not hurt your game, nothing will improve your golf motor skills like taking a lesson from an expert. A teaching pro who will help you develop a methodical process to changing bad mechanics. So make 2011 at Skokie Sports Park “the year to learn like a pro.” Sports Park is annually rated one of the top 100 golf practice centers and learning facilities in America by Golf Range Magazine and offers PGA Professional instruction year around. Further, the facility offers the most affordable golf lesson rates in Cook County. If you would like to begin lessons to improve your game this summer, I am now offering a one-time, free ten minute swing analysis. To schedule a lesson or a free swing analysis, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] or call (248) 635-4183. ❏

DO

ISUP

...when hitting a golf ball by Leonard Lesperance, PGA Teaching Professional Eliminate fat and thin shots and become a solid ball striker in 2011.

Golfers whe struggle to hit the golf ball solidly, usually scoop the ball. This means that they try to fit the golf club between the ground and their ball, trying to lift their golf ball into the air by picking it up cleanly. This “clean pickup” is very difficult to do consistently. A better way to get the golf ball into the air is to hit into the ground. Simply put, “Down is up.” A properly executed fairway shot should leave a divot. And that divot should be found just in front of the golf ball. How can you practice hitting down into the ground? Answer: Use masking tape. Cut a 2 inch strip of masking tape and place it one inch in front of your golf ball. Now, focus on hitting the tape. Don’t worry about hitting the ball or any other swing mechanics, simply focus on hitting the tape. After many swings, remove the tape from the driving range mat. You will now be hitting “down” on the ball. This action will have you striking the ball first and a picking up a bit of grass last, producing a divot. It will also make for penetrating ball flight that will be consistent and feel awesome. Feel free to stop by the range and let me know what you thought about this drill. To take a lesson, call me at (847) 867-1636. ❏...
