Last fall, when the Belmont secondary band program was getting up and running for the

school year, Grade 11 musician Cameron Welch told teacher Mandart Chan he wanted to try something new.

As Welch tells the story, Chan remarked, “What? Do you want to play the bassoon or something?”

Throw this young man a challenge and he takes it on. Despite being a tenor saxophone player at school and an accomplished drum

major with the Langford-based 263 Royal Cana-dian Sea Cadet Corps Beacon Hill, Welch par-layed his new opportunity into a spot with the B.C. Cadet Honour Band, which opens its four-city concert tour with a performance next Tuesday at the McPherson Playhouse.

In 1985, there were five breeding pairs of western purple martins left in the wild.

Well, “In the wild” isn’t even really accu-rate, as they were nesting in the portholes of an old decommissioned ship at the Depart-ment of National Defence dock in Colwood.

But then people with the Victoria Natural History Society and Western Purple Mar-tin Foundation stepped in and started put-ting up nesting boxes to compensate for the loss of their natural habitat. Now, there are approximately 1,000 mating pairs that return to the area each spring from their winter migration to South America.

“There was a slow and steady increase over the first few years (of the nesting box program),” says foundation director Char-lene Lee. By about 2002, she adds, there were approximately 200 pairs. It was evi-dence the program was working and the foundation received funding to expand the program.

“We weren’t sure, being a swallow, that they would take to the boxes,” Lee says, as many swallows are very territorial about their nesting areas. Once the birds did start using them, it became clear that expansion of the program could be the help needed to ensure the birds’ continued survival.

More boxes were put up at the DND docks, for a total of about 40, which see 30 nest-ing pair of martins return each year. Others went up at Royal Roads University (30 boxes total, 20 returning pairs), Goldstream Park got a few (now up to 15) and seven were installed at Pedder Inlet near Pearson Col-lege, whose boxes saw occupancy in the first year after being placed in 2013.

The purple martin’s instinctual nesting habitat is in the holes woodpeckers make in old burned out trees and other dead or dying wood. These days, Lee says, those areas are forested rather than left to nature, creating a lack of area for the birds to nest upon their annual return from South Amer-ica.

The growth of the population also has a lot to do with luck – at least the meteorologi-cal kind.

Lee says there needs to be the right kind of weather at the right time to create the nat-ural circumstances that support increased numbers.

“From 2002 to 2006 we had really good summers for bugs,” she says. Martins sur-vive off large bugs like moths, beetles and dragonflies, as opposed to smaller ones like mosquitoes, so if those types of insects

aren’t plentiful when the martins are try-ing to feed their young, progress is lost in the resurgence efforts. If it’s too wet at the wrong times or for too long, not enough of the birds’ preferred diet is produced for the ones that are trying to survive, let alone to feed their young.

“A week of rain is no good,” Lee says, “but a day or two is okay.”

So it remains to be seen what the num-bers will be like this year. The first ones are expected to return to the area to nest in late April.

“It was a thrill to quietly spy on these birds last summer and see them using the nesting boxes,” says Danielle Pope, who works at Pearson College, the newest of the sites being served by the nesting boxes in the region. “I hope we will see them again this year. They are incredible birds to watch in flight. Even though they are North Amer-ica’s largest swallow, they have a great deal of agility and use the wind currents to help them float and dive. It’s quite something to see.”

While the nesting box program is not actively being expanded now, if people are willing to volunteer to put up boxes and manage them, the foundation certainly encourage that. Lee points out that martins are not a “backyard bird,” as they like wide open areas with water nearby.

If that sounds like a property you know of – one you think might make a good home for these struggling members of our community – head over to the founda-tion’s website at saveourmartins.org or by contacting Lee directly by emailing her at [email protected].

She can also point you to the plans for how to make the nesting boxes and can mentor people through the process, so the purple martin can be given a fighting chance.

More change proposed for Atkins Rd. in View RoyalConversion of single-home lot to multi-home strata in the works

Don DescoteauNews Gazette staff

A long, rocky piece of property at 102 Atkins Rd., wedged in between the Galloping Goose Trail and the E&N railroad tracks, is the subject of a public hearing in View Royal next Tuesday.

The owner of the roughly 1.6-acre parcel near the Six Mile Road end of Atkins is looking for council approval to build nine single family homes in place of the one older home cur-rently on the sprawling piece of land. Doing so first requires changing the zoning from large lot, one-family resi-dential (R-1) to attached residential (mixed density) RM-1. An amend-ment to the official community plan is also required, to include the prop-erty in the Mixed Residential Devel-opment Permit Area.

Lindsay Chase, View Royal’s direc-tor of development services, said the proposal “is consistent with the (OCP), and the single-family home nature is consistent with all of the other surrounding development.”

Rather than creating nine free-hold lots out of one, Chase said, the developer expects to create a form of strata with the existing homeown-ers.

Under the Town’s detached mul-tiple-unit residential zoning, the homes could be built to a maximum of 2.5 storeys and 3,500 square feet of floor space.

As part of the proposal, Chase said, the developer is offering a financial contribution toward cre-ating pedestrian activated crossing lights at the Galloping Goose cross-ing at Atkins Road, a busy junction with somewhat limited visibility for traffic on either side of the roadway.

“Future residents of that par-cel may well consider commuting by bike,” she said. “It provides a good opportunity to realize some improvements.”

The public hearing gets underway at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17 at the town hall, 45 View Royal Ave. More information on the proposal can be found at the town hall, or by calling 250-479-6800.

The slowly-resurging Western Purple Martins arrived back from their southern migration last spring to find some new homes on Pedder Inlet, and took to them immediatley, which was a nice surprise for the students and staff at Peason College UWC and the Western Purple Martin Foundation.

“There’s a bit of a random element to it,” Mitchell said. “I would guess that it’s just a couple of people (causing the problems), or maybe even just one. I certainly don’t get the feeling that it’s becoming more dangerous out here, or anything. It’s more like a statistical blip.”

He added there have been times in the past where they have seen increases, but looking at the trends, he doesn’t think Metchosin is any less safe than it has been.

“I think it’s just a matter of perception. When the media gets a hold of something like this, it’s very easy for it to get all blown out of proportion,” he said, adding that a few incidents aren’t likely to shift the dynamic or cause much unease in the community.

The most recent spate of incidents included a homeowner being awoken to find someone in the hallway of his suite. During the subsequent chase, the

resident reported, the suspect fired “a pellet or Airsoft gun at him.”

The Saanich Police Department canine unit was brought in to track the suspect(s), but was unsuccessful.

The Island District RCMP’s forensic identification section is also assisting with the investigation.

Berube confirmed that in all of the reported incidents, the properties accessed were unlocked and no damage was sustained due to forced entry.

“This is again an unfortunate reminder that owners should keep their homes and vehicles locked,” he said. “If presented with an opportunity, criminals will not hesitate to open an unlocked door.”

Anyone with information in regards to the recent criminal activity or have any other concerns is asked to contact West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)[email protected]

The Colwood teen, a Petty Officer First Class in cadet terms, found out about his selection while travelling home from practice at the University of Victoria with the Don Wright Symphonic Winds, another high-level ensemble in which he plays his adopted instrument.

Getting involved with that group and learning the material has “been very whirlwind,” he says, but he feels it has prepped him for this upcoming challenge. “I feel like it’s going to be the same way in honour band: learn the music quickly and sight read really well.”

Welch is joined in the honour band by fellow 263 corps cadet, Chief Petty Officer First Class Taylor Cartwright, who is also the corps’ coxswain and an a c c o m p l i s h e d clarinetist, both at Belmont and in cadets.

She also took on a new challenge for her Grade12 year, adding the rare E-flat clarinet to her repertoire at school, where she also plays B-flat clarinet, plus alto and bari-tone sax.

“I don’t think I would be where I am without the instruction I got with cadets and the school band,” she says.

Under the cadet musical grading system – it’s similar to Conservatory of Music grading – she has achieved her level 4 standing for clarinet perfor-mance and level 5 in theory. Welch is at the same standing for bassoon.

Cartwright was taken aback when informed of her selection to the cadet honour band.

“I was definitely surprised. I haven’t done a lot with the cadet music program, so I wasn’t expect-ing this. I was pretty excited and shocked.”

While her coxswain duties keep her busy, not to mention school work in her grad year, her cadet time is frequently taken up with recreational activi-ties such as sailing, orienteering, hiking and canoe-ing. “I try to be on every team,” she says.

The musicians from around the province will gather tomorrow (March 14) in Victoria to begin rehearsing material for the four concerts they will play. In addition to the Victoria performance (March 17, 7:30 p.m., tickets at rmts.com), the 45-member band will play concerts in Nanaimo on Sunday, Burnaby on Monday and Vernon on March 20.

The group will play material from Disney’s Fro-zen and The Hunger Games, as well as a selection of classical and military compositions and there will also be a pipes and drums performance.

Both West Shore cadets look forward to rekin-dling some old friendships with people they’ve been at camp with in past, as well as making new friends.

Unlike learning new songs and parts on the fly, that part won’t be a challenge at all for the outgo-ing pair.

Learn about animal rehab work at Wild ARCSPCA-owned facility opens its doors for events later this monthRick Stiebel News Gazette staff

It’s a popular event that definitely gives paws for thought.

The B.C. SPCA’s Wild Animal Rehabili-tation Centre (ARC) is hosting its 11th annual Open House on March 28 and 29 to provide people with a rare up-close and personal look at the work the cen-tre does helping injured and orphaned wildlife get a leg up on returning to their natural habitat.

Wild ARC admitted more than 2,500 wild patients in 2014, and that total is expected to grow this year.

The 10-acre site offers no public access at other times of the year, so the open house allows people to come out and discover how rehabilitation staff and volunteers care for the approxi-mately 140 different species the cen-tre attends to each year, said Wild ARC

manager Kari Marks.“This is a once a year opportunity to

take a tour,” said Marks, who has been at the facility the past four years.

Although those attending can’t dis-turb the animals in care, Wild ARC has arranged for some unique guests for the public to see.

Jeff Krieger from Alternative Wildlife Solutions, a local company, is bringing a couple of hawks. Mike Mackintosh from the Burrowing Owl Conservation Society of B.C. will be on hand as well with a feathered friend.

The open house takes place both days between noon and 4 p.m. and is limited to a total of 1,000 visitors. Res-ervations are required and must be completed online at spca.bc.ca/tourwil-darc2015.

There is no charge for this family friendly event, but gifts of food and sup-plies are gratefully accepted. A list of items needed at the centre will be pro-vided upon registration.

The Wild ARC is at 1020 Malloch Rd. in Metchosin.

QF again named one of Canada’s ‘Best Managed Companies’West Shore grocer’s company recognized with platinum award

For the eighth straight year, Vancouver Island grocer Qual-ity Foods has been selected from thousands of applicants as one of Canada’s Best Managed Com-panies and retains its prestigious accreditation as a Best Managed Platinum member in 2014.

“2014 was a crucial year for us,” says Ken Schley, QF’s director of operations and founding partner in a release.

“We expanded to West Shore

area in Victoria at last.”He says the awards don’t

change their way of looking at the work they do and the role they play in the community.

“When we open a new location it’s important to recognize where our growth is coming from our hard-working and loyal QF people. From there, growth stems from

our commitment to supporting local communities, innovations that improve our customers’ shopping experiences and mean-ingful relationships with national brands and local suppliers.”

Quality Foods has become known for practical innovations in the grocery industry, according to Shawn Tomczyk, QF’s Director of Information Systems.

“We were one of the first in Can-ada to offer both online shopping and a points reward program, plus My Daily Special, which allows customers to pick a non-flyer item for a personal sale price. More recently, we introduced a unique, and so far as we know, undupli-cated smartphone app that con-

nects customer selected deals seamlessly to any QF checkout.”

Best Managed has recognized world-class Canadian businesses since 1993 and has become one of the nation’s elite business awards programs, and Schley is proud to be recognized by them.

“We’re thrilled. Platinum mem-bership means we are continuing to adapt and grow in changing environments, and that we have been able to stay in pretty good company for an extended period of time. We’re proud of this des-ignation and we know that being recognized in this way means a lot to all of our QF people and to our customers.”

OUR VIEW

Rural residents need caution

A recent rash of thefts from vehicles and sheds should serve as a wakeup call to Metchosin residents.

With a quaint “downtown” that consists of a handful of businesses surrounding a T-junction

at Metchosin, William Head and Happy Valley roads, and a mostly rural residential setting whose flavour has been largely unchanged for

decades, it’s easy to understand why a false sense of security has become commonplace.

Make no mistake, however, Metchosin is no less immune to crimes of opportunity than any other area in the Capital Region. The desperate folks who resort to this type of activity to feed their habits think nothing of taking a pleasant drive out to the country to wreak havoc.

That is especially true when would-be thieves know there is a plethora of remote properties available to prey upon, and a mindset among residents that they don’t need to lock or remove valuables from their vehicles, or ensure their doors are locked and their sheds and out buildings secure.

That loose change sitting in plain sight in the console of your car for parking? It’ll cover the price of thieves’ gas for the trip back to the big city, or wherever they happen to be coming from.

West Shore RCMP conducted a community safety presentation a number of years ago that dealt with some of the challenges of preventing crime in rural areas. The good news was the event drew more than 100 people to Metchosin Community Hall on a Friday night. The bad news was that close to half the vehicles in the parking lot were either unlocked and or had valuables in plain sight.

It makes you wonder how many of those in attendance left their homes unlocked.

It’s time that Metchosin residents took the RCMP’s message to heart and took that extra little bit of time to secure those valuables and ensured property was not readily available to those who would profit by stealing it.

Rather than seeing it as an intrusion on their wonderful rural lifestyle, we hope residents look at personal security more as a way of preserving that lifestyle. Practising security is a good way to discourage intruders from putting Metchosin on their preferred hit list.

OTHER VIEWS

Eight million tonnes. That’s how much plastic we’re tossing into the oceans every year. University of Georgia environmental engineer Jenna Jambeck says it’s enough to line up five grocery bags of trash on every foot of coastline in the world.

A study published by Jambeck and colleagues in the journal Science on Feb. 12 examined how 192 coastal countries disposed of plastic waste in 2010. The report, “Plastic waste inputs from land into the ocean”, estimates that of 275 million tonnes of plastic generated, about eight million (based on a midpoint estimate of 4.8 million to 12.7 million tonnes) ends up in the seas — blown from garbage dumps into rivers and estuaries, discarded on beaches or along coastlines and carried to the oceans.

China tops the list of 20 countries responsible for 83 per cent of “mismanaged plastic” in the oceans, sending between 1.32 and 3.53 million tonnes into the seas. The U.S., which has better waste-management systems, is number 20 on the list, responsible for 0.04 to 0.11 tonnes. Some countries in the top 20 don’t even have formal waste-management systems. The fear is that, as human populations grow, the amount of plastic going into the oceans will increase dramatically if countries don’t improve waste-management systems and practices — and reduce the amount of plastic they produce and use.

Scientists don’t know where

most plastic ends up or what overall effect it’s having on marine life and food supplies. They do

know that massive islands of plastic and other waste — some as large as Saskatchewan — swirl in five gyres in the north and south Pacific, north and south Atlantic and Indian oceans. But that’s only a small amount of the total.

Plastic is everywhere in our seas. It accumulates

on the sea floor and in sediments, washes up on coastlines and is

taken up by fish and other sea creatures. It affects birds, fish, mammals and other marine life. It eventually breaks down into smaller bits, which can look like fish eggs and get eaten by marine animals, but it never biodegrades. Those particles, or microplastics, just keep building up.

They also absorb and concentrate toxic chemicals, poisoning the animals that consume them. Studies show that 44 per cent of all seabird species have plastic in and around their bodies, and fish, birds, turtles and whales often become fatally entangled in plastic waste.

Even the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which went down over the South China Sea in March 2014, was confounded when investigators looking for crash evidence kept finding plastic debris.

Humans depend on healthy oceans for food, water, air, recreation and transportation. Oceans contain more than 97 per cent of the planet’s water and produce more than half the oxygen

we breathe. They also absorb carbon — important to reducing global warming. Half the world’s people live in coastal zones, and ocean-based businesses contribute more than $500 billion a year to the global economy.

What we do to the oceans and the life therein, we do to ourselves. So what can we do to keep them — and us — healthy?

The report’s authors say reducing “mismanaged” plastic waste, regulating the amount of plastics that enter the waste stream and improving waste-disposal methods in the top 20 offending countries are all essential. But, Jambeck notes, “It’s not just about improving the infrastructure in other countries. There are things we can do in our daily lives to reduce the amount of waste plastic we all produce.”

Canada’s relatively good waste-disposal and recycling systems keep us off the 20 worst offenders list — but we can still do better. Reducing the amount of plastic we use is the first step. For consumers, that means avoiding overpackaged goods and unnecessary plastic items, such as bottled water, single-serve K-cup coffee pods and disposable products. We must also get better at reusing and recycling. According to a report by the U.S. non-profit As You Sow, plastic is the fastest-growing form of packaging, and only about 14 per cent gets recycled.

Oceans and the life they support face numerous threats, from climate change to overfishing. Reducing the amount of plastic we dump into them is a challenge we can meet. Let’s get on it.

Ocean plastic is an oxymoron

CorrectionsAn article in the

March 11 Gazette (E-cig rules need tweak) mis-identified the name of the retailer. The shop managed by Don Parkes is CEV Store.

A story in the March 4 Gazette (France says thanks for veterans’ wartime service) incor-rectly stated casualty numbers in a wartime sinking of a ship on which Fred Seeley was a crew member. The total crew was 93, 40 of whom were rescued.

We need to do better in addressing mental healthLast week I responded to a call

here at the Gazette from someone who said their front garden had been destroyed by vandals the night before.

Well, that’s not exactly what they had said, but that was the gist of the message relayed to me when I arrived at the office.

So, I headed off to the address on the note to find out what was going on.

It turned out that there was a man with some mental health issues who was trying to create a special kind of ecosystem on his rental property. He had been told by his doctor that it was maybe time to start thinking about “going back to work,” after a few years off to get his emotional situation under control. He lived in a four-plex and his neighbours and landlord had contrary feelings on what should be done with the yard, so they had taken action, cutting down his plants (which by all accounts, including

his own, had been harvested from nearby properties in the neighbourhood).

I discussed the matter with my editor and we decided it wasn’t really newsworthy. It was, after all, essentially just a spat between residents and there was really no risk to public safety or any other aspect to the tale that would cause it to be “a story.”

It was, however, an opportunity for me to examine, in this edition of my musings, the way we treat mental illness as a society. These types of altercations and others that crop up due to the way we deal with mental health happen all around us every day.

One night this week on The National, CBC’s flagship news program, host Peter Mansbridge convened a panel of medical experts to discuss the issue of mental health and where we are in Canada in dealing with the topic. The general consensus was

that we’re not really doing that well.

A 2010 study by the Mental Health Commission of Canada said that on any given week, approximately 500,000 Canadians are unable to work due to mental health. That’s right – half a million people. Per week.

This is estimated to cost the country more than $50 billion per year in health-care costs, lost productivity and reduced quality of life.

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, one in five Canadians will experience mental illness of some type in their lifetime.

Twenty-four per cent of all deaths among 15 to 24 year olds are suicides, as are 16 per cent of all deaths among those aged 25 to 44.

These are terrible numbers. And we’re not doing enough to help bring them down.

Why not? Why is there still a stigma attached to mental health when one in five people experience it? Why are we not taking it seriously?

“When you look at the burden

of mental illness in terms of the amount of suffering and also the amount of disability that’s caused by mental illness, we’re probably not resourced enough,” says Lesley Weisenfeld, deputy chief of psychiatry and head of the Geriatric Psychiatry Consultation Liaison Service at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital. Part of the mental health panel on The National, she added that the resources we do have to address the issue are also not managed properly.

Part of the reason for that lack of resource allocation is because of the many societal misconceptions and stigmas surrounding the issue itself.

“One of the biggest (misconceptions) is that you should just be able to overcome (mental illness) on your own,” Weisenfeld said.

Danielle Martin, a family physician at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, added there’s also a misconception out there that people with mental health issues are violent, and part of people’s unwillingness to address the topic is a fear of those who

are suffering.“People who are mentally ill

are much more likely to harm themselves than harm others,” Martin said. “We need to help the general public understand that a person who is mentally ill is not a risk to you as a member of the public, but (they are) someone who needs our help and deserves our collective effort.”

It’s time we start devoting the resources necessary to deal with this issue.

Mental health needs to be a discussion we have in the open, proudly, so we can start looking critically at not only how we think about it, but how we’re going to tackle it.

Ford an Expedition to eleganceThe popular Ford Expedi-tion gets a makeover this model year, bringing this 2015 version into a differ-ent class of elegance.

Looks:A completely updated front end aligns itself with the Super-Duty and the new F150.I like the look of the grille, large and in charge. The featured projector style headlamps with LED fog lights made the front end of the Platinum Edition tester look like a piece of jewelry!A raised power dome hood and nice bodylines certainly give this Expedition some class. The power retractable running boards are standard on this edition but I find they react too slowly for me when the door is opened. No doubt for some the boards would be a great addition while others might think of them being in the way. When you design a sport utility vehicle, it is always tough to give the back end some shape. As an engineer, you’re wor-ried about aerodynamics but in this case the designers still managed to match the back’s elegance to that of the front.

In The Cab:As you open the door, you are greeted by ambient lighting that can be customized with a selection of colors. The Platinum has leather seats, leather door trim and console accented by wood inlays. The dash is hand warped and stitched giving this cabin a very upscale look. The front bucket seats are heated and cooled. The second row folds flat along with the third row, which drops at the touch of a button. The command center controls everything from entertainment to climate.

Speaking of entertainment, the sound system is a Sony premium audio system that features 12 speakers and 390 watts of power.Safety first:Front seat mounted side airbags, safety canopy system with three row-side curtain airbags and rollover sensor. Advance-Trac with roll stability, tire pressure monitoring system, and trailer sway control are just some of the standard features.Roadworthy:The Expedition delivers on space, com-fort and functionality while driving like

a smaller SUV. Very little, if any, body roll. Steering is magnificent and easy, and responsive while changing lanes and finding a tight parking space.

Verdict:The upgrade this vehicle has received raises the quality, safety, and comfort to a new level.

Power:This vehicle comes standard with a twin turbo 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine that puts out 365 horsepower and 420 lb ft of torque. The transmission is a six-speed se-lect shift. 4.10 gear ratio. Towing is made easy by the transmission tow/haul mode, which helps keep you from gaining too much speed when towing downhill. The engine maintains its power band while towing up a hill keeping the speed and momentum constant.

Pump frequency:1w6.2 / 11.8 L/100 km (city/highway) Warranty support:Basic, 4 years/80,000 km. Corrosion, 5 years/unlimited distance.Powertrain, 6 years/110,000 km.Safety restraint, 5 years/100,000 km.Roadside Assistance, 5 years/100,000 km.Sticker price:XLT $49,299, Limited $63,399, Platinum $65,399.

100% ELECTRIC

NISSAN LEAFPresented by

SCRAP-IT

The all-electric Nissan LEAF tells white lies!

The Nissan LEAF miraculously cut a journey in half this week.I’ll explain. I took the plug-in sedan on a 43-kilometre trip from Vancouver to Driveway HQ, on 152nd Street, in Surrey. When I set out, the screen display showed that I could drive emission-free for 146 kilometres. Now I could have taken off like an F1 supercar and street raced all the way, because electric power offers instant tire squealing torque if you press the pedal to the metal. But that’s not me. Spurred by my ecofriendly driving the previous day, the clever car had decided earlier in the day that I could do 156 kilometres on a full charge. Not boasting but that’s easily more than 20 kilometres better than the average driver can expect to achieve. Okay, maybe my head

is swelling. The big 1-4-6 winked at me. I threw the stick into ECO mode and with two flicks of the wrist pushed it into the enhanced B-mode, which puts the braking power regeneration into overdrive, so to speak.I glided silently down the road, picking up pace ever so gradually in the busy city traffic. Rolling

down the hills to Marpole, I could feel the juice from the brakes topping up that battery. On the freeway, I hit the posted speed limit and

40 minutes later pulled into HQ. The display flashed 126. I had covered 43 klicks with the power required to move the car just 20! Such fun.Next week: More on the joy of driving electric.

It would have been no great surprise if car designer Alfonso Albaisa had become a designer of stationary objects – buildings! The Infiniti Executive Design Director fell in love with design as a young boy living in Miami, FL.As he recalls his childhood, he mentions that this wasn’t the beach part of Miami that might come to mind when we think of the city. Albaisa’s father was a building architect and so as a youngster the budding designer spent a lot of time at the office.“I remember this as if it was yesterday, that the shadows would move on the streets and I’d sit in the entrance of my dad’s office playing with the little buildings and models.”Then one day, sitting on the steps of his father’s office, fate changed his life’s ambitions changed. It was then that he heard and saw it for the first time.“One day, I was seven or eight, I heard a rumbling and it pulled into the office,” Albaisa explains.“It was an E-Type Jag convertible. And that really changed it for me… It was just so beautiful. Because this was the early 70s. Miami wasn’t Justin Bieber going down the street in a Lamborghini. You never saw these these kinds of cars, so it was shocking for me, that a car could be so beautiful… And then I

started drawing cars.”From then on, he knew that designing vehicles would be in his future. Then again, that wasn’t without explora-tion into other mediums of design.Albaisa says, “Life takes its course and I really got into art also, so I studies art in the beginning.”He holds a degree from Pratt Institute in New York and he attended the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. While still in school, Albaisa was hired by Nissan Motor Corp Inc. even before he graduat-ed and hasn’t looked back. He has been

with the company more than 25 years. “Every day is different in this company,” he explains. “My first two or three years in the group, I worked on the J30. And I did a yacht, I was designing TaylorMade golf clubs and I played beach volleyball competitively, so I had this crazy life.”He designed furniture on the side, as well.“As an artist, change causes change and changes your mind,” he states. His roles over the years have evolved, too. Albaisa joined the Nissan Design team in San Diego in 1988. From 1997,

he held a number of senior Design positions within Nissan leading up to his appointment as Design Director, Nissan Design America, in 2004.In 2007, he was appointed vice pres-

ident of Nissan Design Europe and in 2011 returned to the U.S. as vice pres-ident, Nissan Design America. In 2012, Albaisa was named design director of Nissan global Design, Nissan brand passenger cars, including Zero Emission Vehicles. That’s his current role as we’re sitting in the rear of the spacious Q70L sedan at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. (Albaisa will be sending the Infiniti Q80 Inspiration con-cept to the Vancouver International Auto Show) lbaisa will be sending the Infiniti Q80 Inspiration concept to the Vancouver Inter-national Auto Show.Perhaps it’s an uncon-ventional setting for an interview, but then again, he’s not a partic-

ularly conventional individual! – And it’s a quiet haven from the bustle of the exterior commotion.Though he’s a veteran in his role, he tells me, “It’s quite a difficult job. You’re con-stantly an ambassador for the dreams of your people.”He adds, “Ideas are not demonstrable. You’re always worried that the call is going to come before the idea is ready to be shown. This is probably the only thing that really worries me. I have a lot of really talented people and I want to keep there.”Aside from the same emotions that we all feel concerning our respective roles at our workplace, he embraces the changes, the ups and downs and the no-tion to create brand unification through the sketches on a notepad. When it comes to describing his role, Albaisa remarks, “I still feel like I just started.”

Aero 8 is a blast from the pastThe all-new Morgan Aero 8 draws its design inspiration from the popular British roadsters from the 1960s.But the similarities between the new 8 and those cars from the past ends with the looks because the Aero 8 is reliable! – It’s powered by a BMW V8 engine capable of propelling the two-seater from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. Prices later but it won’t be available here – sadly.

Hollywood star Tom Cruise has driven dozens of cars in his 40-plus movies. Here are the top five coolest cars featured in movies:“Vanilla Sky”: In this reality warping, romantic drama, Tom plays David Aames — the head of a New York publishing firm with access to whatever he pleases. In the opening scene, Cruise drives a Ferrari 250 GTO replica through a deserted New York City, ultimately ending in Times Square. Aames’ daily driver throughout the film is a1967 Ford Mustang, and after he falls in love with a different woman, his ex-girlfriend Julie (played by Cameron Diaz) tries to kill them both by driving off a bridge in her 1970 Buick Skylark.“Rain Man”: After his father’s death, Charlie Babbitt (played by Cruise), a grey market sports

car dealer (seen importing Countaches in the film’s opening), flies home to Ohio to settle the estate. After learning he has an older brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), who is inheriting the full estate, the two set out on a cross-country road trip back to California in their father’s 1949 Buick Roadmaster.“Jack Reacher”: Tom plays Jack Reacher, an ex-Army MP who is investigating the murder of five innocent victims of a sniper shooting. The real high-light of the film is a six-minute car chase in which Cruise drives a 1970 Chevelle SS. He tries his best to chase down an Audi A6 while being pursued by police. The driving stunts are of quite a remarkable quality; especially considering Cruise did all of his own driving throughout the movie.“Risky Business”: In this 1983 dark-comedy dra-ma, Tom Cruise plays Joel Goodson, a high school student living with wealthy parents in suburban Chicago. His parents go away on a trip, giving Joel

strict orders to not touch the stereo system or his father’s 1979 Porsche 928. Joel’s unruly friend convinces him otherwise, leading Joel into a down-ward spiral of trouble that includes a car chase in the Porsche, and later some major water damage.“War of the Worlds”: Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a divorced dockworker in New York City. His pride and joy seems to be his 1966 Shelby GT350H rather

than his two kids — this all changes after an alien invasion of Earth. The probability of an alien inva-sion seems just as unlikely as a decidedly unmoti-vated N.Y. dockworker owning such a rare car as a Shelby! – But then this is the movies.Nick Gravlin writes for Hagerty Insurance. Double OT loss finishes Grizz’ seasonBCHL squad hoped to force a game 7 against Powell River

Don DescoteauNews Gazette staff

After turning a sleepy arena into an electrified building with three goals late in the third period to tie the game, the Victoria Grizzlies couldn’t quite finish off the Powell River Kings on Tuesday in Colwood.

Carmine Buono’s goal 10:21 into the second overtime period ended the Grizzlies’ season, giving the visi-tors a 5-4 victory and a four games to two win in the B.C. Hockey League’s Island Division semifinal.

Victoria appeared worn down in the third, likely a combination of play-ing their sixth game in eight nights and frustration from not being able to beat Kings goaltender Brett Magnus, who stopped 55 shots on the night, including 39 in regulation time.

But Brett Gruber gave the home team and the crowd life when he picked the top left corner over Mag-nus with 6:31 to go. With the Kings

still a bit flatfooted, blueliner Jake Emilio wired a shot past the big goalie 22 seconds later to make it a one-goal game.

Given a boost of energy by the sud-den outburst, the Grizzlies tied it up with 1:41 to go, as Dane Gibson and Jay Mackie set up Kevin Massy for the tying goal with netminder Michael Stiliadis pulled for an extra attacker. It was Massy’s second goal of the game.

Both teams had their chances in the first overtime period, but the goalies were equal to the task. The Grizzlies and Kings were taking short shifts in the second OT, trying to stay fresh enough to mount an attack.

In the end, the Kings proved to have a little more energy and took advantage of a failed clearing attempt to keep the puck in the Grizzlies zone and stuff it past Stiliadis.

The teams traded power play goals

in the first, Jacob Pritchard scoring for the Kings and Massy replying less than three minutes later. Powell River gained the upper hand with a pair of goals in the following 1:24, one from Pritchard, the other from Jarid Luko-sevicius.

Austin Kamer made it 4-1 in the sec-ond for the Kings, who looked ready to cruise to victory before the Griz-zlies came to life in the third.

Stiliadis made 36 saves in all, including a number of tough ones.

The Kings had to wait another night for the winner of the Nanaimo and Port Alberni series. After losing the first three games to the Clippers, the Bulldogs reeled off three straight wins, including a 4-3 win Tuesday in Port Alberni. Game 7 was scheduled for last night (after print deadline) at Frank Crane Arena in Nanaimo.

Room still remainsin ’Rocks youth camp St. Paddy’s Day shootaround on Sunday kicks off fun weekDon DescoteauNews Gazette staff

Youth lacrosse players can get a feel for what it’s like to wear Shamrock green next week at the first ever Victoria Shamrocks spring break kids camp.

With Shamrocks Rhys Duch, the 2014 Western Lacrosse Association scor-ing champion, and defence specialist Jon Harnett run-ning the show, the camp offers young players a great opportunity, says club exec-utive director Paul German.

“Basically it’s about skill development for kids and learning from players like Rhys and Jon,” he says. “They’re going to run the same offensive and defen-sive drills and programs they do at the WLA level.”

The camp runs from Mon-day (March 16) to Thurs-day. With players in the tyke and novice divisions in one group, and those playing

pee wee and bantam in the other; the camp isn’t just about working hard and gearing up for the 2015 sea-son, German adds.

“Rhys Duch started (play-ing) as a little kid, too, and he knows it’s about having fun with the game. They’re going to have some fun, and it’s also about meeting their heroes.”

Leading into the camp this Sunday is a free spe-cial event that has become a tradition with Shamrock Nation.

The third annual St. Pat-rick’s Day Shootaround gives fans and families a chance to grab a burger and meet their favourite Sham-rocks players, as well as opening up the lacrosse box for the kids to throw the ball around with the team.

The Shootaround runs from noon to 4 p.m. beside The Q Centre.

Costs for the camp are $165 for the younger age group and $185 for the older players.

West Shore youth invited to try out a ‘tri’Mike DaviesNews Gazette staff

After 30 years with the Victoria Police Department, Rob Dibden has turned his full attention to tri-athlon.

Yes, he competes on occasion, but his focus, at least for right now, is fostering a love of the sport in the youth of the community.

“I retired from policing in 2012,” he says, “and I was looking for something to do with myself that I really love, and triathlon was at the top of the list. They say if you find something you love to do, you’ll never work a day in your life, and that’s the point I’m at right now.”

Human Powered Racing, the organiza-tion Dibden and Mike Neil formed in 2006, has overseen the Vic-toria Youth Triath-lon for the past four years. They’ve now turned their atten-tion to spreading the love over here on the West Shore with the upcoming West Shore Youth Tri-athlon.

The inaugural event, in collabo-ration with West Shore Parks and Recreation, is scheduled for May 17 and is currently accepting reg-istrations.

“It’s the first time our youth race has been out here and we’re really excited about it,” Dibden says.

“Initially, we had a meeting with the Westshore Chamber of Commerce, just about events out here in general. They were very

interested in bringing some more high-profile sporting events out to the western communities,” he says, so they got to talking about possibly relocating some events. Through those conversations, however, they began to consider the possibility of starting a new one, instead.

Once the idea started germi-nating, Dibden approached West Shore Parks and Recreation. He had “scoped out possible sites for the race” and determined the area around the Juan de Fuca Recre-ation Centre would be the ideal

location for the event.“They were awe-

some,” he says. “The staff (at parks and rec-reation) were really supportive of trying to get it going. And now it’s full steam ahead.”

There were 260 par-ticipants at the Vic-toria Youth Triathlon last year – the maxi-mum number they could accept – so it’s clear there is a signifi-

cant amount of interest, at least regionally.

“I don’t expect that for the first year out here, the event will not be that big,” Dibden says, “but hope-fully we can generate enough inter-est that it’s successful. I’d like to get over 100. That’s a big enough number to show that there’s a real interest within the community for having an event like this and that it’ll continue to grow. I think the interest is there.”

The key to gathering that inter-est is in getting the word out to the schools. That’s where Sooke

School District Trustee Dianna Seaton comes in. She’s leading the charge, Dibden says, in spreading the message.

“I think it’s just fantastic,” she says. “It’s such a great thing for our kids out here.”

Seaton says it’s a challenge getting the word out over spring break, with so many families either out of town or busy with other activities. As soon as school is back in session, however, the posters will go up and the promo-tion mission begins.

“It’s really something that I want to encourage,” Seaton says. “To give our young people the oppor-tunity to engage in something like this, that can lead them to long-term healthy lifestyles. It’s some-

thing that we just can’t put a price on and it’s wonderful that it’s become available.”

The beautiful thing about hav-ing the race at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre, Dibden says, is that the entire race can be con-tained within the grounds, which makes it both safe and very easy to manage. It’s also easier for the parents to come out and watch, he says, because it’s a loop course. Participants will swim a certain number of laps of the pool, based on their age category, the bike course is created using the vari-ous driveways of the facility and the run will take place on the chip trail in the park.

“It safer for the kids,” Dibden says, “because you keep every-

thing contained in a small area that you can manage well. It’s a little more onerous on the organi-zation side of things, because you need lap counters to keep track of people and other extra volunteers, but it’s better, overall, I think.”

Approximately 30 volunteers are needed to help with some of those ancillary duties, including marshals to assist with traffic con-trol, people to supervise the nutri-tion and food tables, lap counting and other roles.

Registration is $50 per partici-pant, which includes a medal for all who finish their circuit, a par-ticipant shirt for everyone, the awards, as well as the cost of oper-ating the nutrition stations.

But it’s not about the medals and ribbons. It’s about participat-ing in something that could lead to a life-long love of physical activity, and having fun, Dibden says.

“Triathlon is the type of sport where it develops an active atti-tude. From a lifestyle aspect, it really fosters the attitude that physical activity is an important part of life.”

Especially for the kids’ races, he adds, “we try not to emphasize performance, it’s more about par-ticipation. When you make a big hoopla about who did the best, the kid who came last feels pretty bad about themselves, so we make a point of not doing that. We make it about the fun of doing it.”

You can register for the event or find out more by visiting wests-horeyouthtri.ca or humanpowere-dracing.ca, or by contacting Dib-den directly at [email protected]@goldstreamgazette.com

“I think it’s just fantastic. It’s such a great thing for our kids out here.”

B.C. junior football club continues to make strides on a few frontsDon DescoteauNews Gazette staff

The Calgary Stampeders look is out and a fresh new West Coast look is in for the Westshore Rebels football club.

The B.C. Football Conference junior squad unveiled its new logo and an upgraded website this week, along with a new promotional video aimed at helping recruit players and market the team and its players to the community.

New head coach J.C. Boice said the U.S.-style rebranding project, undertaken by Vancouver company Digital Shift with the input from the foot-ball club’s volunteer board, was first and foremost inspired by the players.

“We took lots of samplings,” he said. “(But) we spoke to the players first and asked them what they thought they wanted to (be representative) of the Rebels.”

Boice calls the new look “a little bit edgy” and

said the process of updating the look for the team has done a good job of uniting the players, the board and Rebels alumni.

Continuing to make strides in turning around the team and building a new image for the club, the board, led by team president Elise Pastro, has helped keep the players visible in the community as well. Last weekend some of them were busy bagging groceries at the Market on Millstream in Langford.

“The club has been very proactive in seeking opportunities for our athletes to interact in the community, as well as teaching them why it’s important for them to connect with the commu-nity, “ Boice said.

On the field, those who are in town this off-sea-son are checking in for workouts with the coach and keeping in shape to be ready for the spring camp, set for May 1 to 3 at Westhills Stadium.

Part of the excitement in the leadup to camp weekend was the quiet announcement this week that Doug Hocking has agreed to join the club as defensive co-ordinator for the 2015 season.

Hocking oversaw the powerful defence that helped the Vancouver Island Raiders win national championships in 2006, 2008 and 2009 and seven B.C. titles, after which he coached with the UBC Thunderbirds. A 12-year pro who played in the Canadian Football League, he won a Grey Cup with the B.C. Lions in 1994.

His return to the Raiders had been announced in December, but in February the Nanaimo club unveiled former UBC special teams co-ordinator Jerome Erdman as their new defensive co-ordi-nator.

Boice is thrilled to have someone of Hocking’s experience level joining the coaching staff in Lang-ford.

“That’s a big deal to attract a high-level coach like that with a proven track record,” Boice said. “The identity of that Raider organization back then was a fantastic, really aggressive defensive unit.”

The Rebels coach hinted that more quality staff-ers will be brought in as the club heads toward spring camp.

Speaking of training camp, the Rebels may well have to turn interested players away, having made a decision to cap the numbers at 100. Known for his recruiting skills on both sides of the border, Boice said word is getting out about the team and its fresh approach to development and com-munity.

Q: GROWTH SLOWING DOWN IN LANGFORD?

HomeFinderFind a place to call home

Residential growth in Langford continues at a healthy pace with a mix of housing options available.

Limona Developments is developing properties on Happy Valley Road that will offer smaller size single-fam-ily homes.

There are plenty of sub-divisions currently under construction as well, includ-ing more conventional size detached single family homes on Latoria Road.

Complementing the cur-rent upturn are a number of rental projects under way, including three on Hockley Avenue, one on Station Ave-nue near Jacklin Road and another on Peatt Road, add-ing to the one recently com-pleted on Granderson Road, meaning that there will soon be many more options for both renters and buyers to take advantage of.

If you just drive around for a while within the boundar-ies of Langford, any ques-tions you may have about whether the growth is slowing will soon be answered.

The whole West Shore region is booming just now, and it doesn’t look like it will reach its plateau for a while yet.

GREATER VICTORIA MARKET UPDATE »MONTH AS OF MARCH 9/15 COURTESY VICTORIA REAL ESTATE BOARD

Pricing hasn’t been established yet, but Phase One sold from $439,000 to $569,000

Rick StiebelNews Gazette staff

New homes in Phase Two in the Par-adise Falls development in Westhills are set to go on the market March 25. Although pricing hasn’t been final-ized, Phase Two will offer up single family homes of approximately 2,100 sq. ft. featuring custom appliances, quartz countertops and a geothermal heating and cooling system.

The Paradise Falls development consists of six phases and will con-tain about 135 single-family homes, 13 townhouses and six small footprint homes upon completion, said Rob Muller, marketing and construction coordinator for Westhills.

Prices for single-family homes in Phase One ranged from $439,000 to $569,000 for the 12 single-family homes, 13 townhouses and six small footprint homes in that phase. Sales have been brisk, with only single-fam-ily home left after Phase One went on the market in October, Muller said.

Phase Two will include upgrades not included in Phase one, Muller noted.

Construction began on Paradise Falls, part of the larger scale Wes-thills master plan community, in 2014. Information on the Lakepoint phase, which will include mixed use residen-tial and retail, will be unveiled in the near future,

Westhills appeals to families because of the close proximity to trails, City Centre Park and shopping amenities such as Capital Iron, Cas-cadia Liquor and Quality Foods, all

within walking distance, Muller said The new YM-YWCA Aquatic Centre, scheduled to open in the spring of next year, will add another key recre-ational component.

“The Westhills focus is on commu-nity,” Muller said. “We have a mas-ter plan that separates us from other developments on the West Shore.”

For more information, visit the show suite at 1298 Bombardier just off Langford Parkway or check out www.westhills.ca.
