the public very strongly that they want something tangible they can make comment on,” he said Tues-day at the Capital Regional Dis-trict core area liquid waste man-agement committee meeting, held at the Songhees First Nation Well-ness Centre.

“They want options A through E that they can comment on, and I don’t know that this will do that. I’m sure it’ll put out there some

wonderful ideas … but I don’t see how you necessarily make the leap that they’re applicable to what we’re doing here or whether we can afford them.”

Screech was responding to the announcement of an upcoming “Innovation Days” event at Royal Roads University, April 27 to 29. The public event will see indus-try representatives present their responses to the Request for Tech-nical Information (RFTI) recently undertaken by the CRD.

The RFTI attracted 10 submis-sions from companies demon-strating possibilities for treating the region’s sewage. A CRD staff report stated the information received should prove useful to the Westside and Eastside com-mittees working with technical experts on developing treatment options and cost evaluations.

The CRD made it clear that the RFTI was not a call for propos-als to later be tendered, but was merely information-gathering

about technologies that could be implemented. However, six responses came from system sup-pliers – one pilot project plant and five established ones. One of those was the company that recently built a wastewater treatment plant in Sechelt, while another pro-posed a system for biogas treat-ment to convert digester gas into vehicle fuel.

Kids and learning are different today, and the educa-tion system needs to keep up,” says Ray Miller, prin-cipal of Belmont secondary.

He’s sitting in his office surrounded by papers, sched-ules, curriculum and huge cardboard cutouts the size and shape of the various furniture being proposed for the new Belmont and Royal Bay high schools currently under con-struction and scheduled to open in September.

“The education system as a whole has had trouble adjust-ing and adapting to the needs of the community and the kids. That is where I think we need to put our resources.”

Okay, so what does that mean? What meaningful changes can we make systemically to a system, and learning model, that is, by his own admission, societally ingrained and responsively petrified?

“The first change that needs to be made,” he says, “is to move the mindset away from an adult-centred system to a student-centred system. We need to personalize the educa-tion system; make it fit for the student instead of it being a system that the student has to fit.

“What is it that they need in their education that will give them something of value to take with them in their lives?”

Then comes the kicker.“Schools weren’t built to give the adults a place to work,”

he says.The way Miller sees it, the whole “how much we are pay-

ing the teachers?” issue is almost irrelevant. It’s more about how – and if – the teachers are accomplishing what they are being paid to do.

“We need to move away from the teacher being the sage on the stage, being all-knowing and ‘I have all the informa-tion, and I hold it and therefore I’m powerful, that’s what makes me different from you,’ to having the teachers be facilitators of learning. If the teacher can help shape people towards their interests, their passions, their goals, you’ll find, I think, that the same cost of that educator is used more effectively.”

The issue with that, according to Stephanie Longstaff, SD62 parents’ advisory council president at Belmont and mother of nine children who have gone through the SD62 system, is teacher autonomy.

“I think one of the biggest challenges we have is also one of the biggest strengths we have, and that’s the auton-omy of the teacher,” she says. “The district, the principal, nobody can tell them how to teach what they’re supposed to teach. There are expected outcomes – by the end of whatever grade a child should know this – but how you teach them that is up to you.”

That can be great – “if you have an awesome, wonderful,

captivating teacher,” who is able to engage the students while they’re teaching the curriculum, she says.

“But if you have a teacher that stands in front of the class and talks at them five hours a day, the kids might not meet those outcomes. Not because the teachers didn’t teach them, but because they didn’t engage the kids, didn’t get them involved; so the children didn’t actually learn the material.”

Her biggest frustration is exactly what Miller thinks is needed to remedy the system at a structural level.

“I’m a product from a school system that’s not so much different than the one we have today, unfor-tunately,” Longstaff says. “There are lots of good ideas and theories out there, but unfor-tunately most of them are up at the top lev-els – at the board office, or at the principal level or provincial government level – and haven’t necessarily made their way into the classroom yet. There are some teachers that are just doing it exactly the same way they have been for 30 years when they started teaching, and it’s not serving our students.”

So how do you get those great ideas into the classroom about what works best to educate kids when you can’t dictate how people will teach?

SD62 superintendent Jim Cambridge says you need to make it harder for people not do it the newer, better way.

“The way we’re designing and building the new schools is significantly different than the way it’s been done in the past,” he says. “We’re trying to make the notion of collabo-ration and teamwork – which is central to everything you read about what jobs and expectations and careers actually feature – part of the education of the kids. You walk through Belmont right now, you see very long corridors with basi-cally 20 different individual schools along each side of them. It’s very hard for the teachers to collaborate, even when they want to. Well, we’re creating an atmosphere (in the construction of the new schools) where we’re forcing that issue a little bit.”

Miller puts it slightly differently, but essentially agrees.

“I think there’s a lot of nervousness among educators these days,” he says. “There’s a realization that evolution is afoot that if you’re not keeping up, you’re going to be left behind. I’ve seen teachers beginning to evolve. We need to continue to support and encourage educators in their adjustment in that direction.”

What makes a school – what makes an education system – isn’t the bricks and mortar or wood framing and drywall that make the walls, but the people and culture held within them, Miller says. The district, he adds, is determined to bust open some of those walls to bring people closer

together.The new schools are designed to do that.

They’re designed to encourage people to work collaboratively for the betterment of the whole.

“We have to make sure we’re providing the future of education, not the present,” says Wendy Hobbs, chair of the board of trustees for SD62. “And I think being able to work together collaboratively will make a better all-around student in the end, and lead to better learning outcomes.”

“In the real world,” Cambridge adds, “that’s how people work. They’re sharing ideas, which is where better ideas come from. It’s where better solutions to problems come from.”

So is there still room for the old-school lecturers who stand at the front of the class and teach, blanketing stu-dents with the information the curriculum mandates that they learn?

“If they’re relationship builders, yes,” Miller says simply. “If they’re content deliverers, no.”

“Kids expect, nowadays, to work together,” Cambridge says. “They expect to be able to talk about their ideas. The whole isolated experience of learning in a classroom, being talked at, needs to go away.”

And that’s what they’re trying to make happen, which, they think, will make us better off in the long run.

A 19-year-old Langford man wanted on two unrelated outstanding warrants was arrested early Tuesday morn-ing after police received a

report that he was in posses-sion of a handgun.

After obtaining a warrant, members of West Shore RCMP general duty, street crime and major crime units, the Island District RCMP emergency response team, a negotiator and the Saanich police canine unit descended upon a home in the 900-block of Walfred Rd. around 4 a.m.

After the negotiator spent some time speaking with the suspect to help ensure the situation was safe, police entered the home and found

a replica firearm – a pel-let gun, according to West Shore RCMP spokesperson Const. Alex Berube. Since no offences were alleged to have been committed with the gun, no firearms-related charges were laid.

“Anytime we receive infor-mation that a firearm is in the possession of someone wanted on outstanding war-rants, it is cause for concern,” Berube said of the significant police presence.

“Until such a time as we are able to determine the authen-

ticity of a firearm, our level of response must be adequate to ensure community safety and the safety of our officers.”

A 20-year-old woman on the scene was also taken into cus-tody but was released later without being charged.

The male suspect was held in custody and was due to appear in Western Communi-ties courthouse later Tuesday morning to face charges relat-ing to breach of probation and breach of a court-ordered conditions of [email protected]

West Shore RCMP had a tricky job on their hands this week, after a woman turned in a sum of money she found at a West Shore restaurant on Tuesday.

Const. Alex Berube said proving ownership of lost money can be tough, as only the owner would know the exact amount as well as the place it was lost. As such, police were not disclosing either piece of information. “We really appreciate the dedication of the woman who turned in the money to us in effort to retrace its owner,” Berube said.

The rightful owner claimed her $50 on Wednes-day by describing to the RCMP every detail of where, when and how she lost her money.



Now that they’ve settled into their new home on Jacklin Road, the WorkLink Employment Soci-ety is propping open their doors to show it off.

Next Thursday, April 16, from 4 to 7 p.m., Jennifer Harrison and the entire West Shore WorkBC crew will be on hand to talk to anyone interested about the pro-grams and supports they offer.

“Everyone knows someone who is either unhappy at their job or needs work,” Harrison says.

That’s why there’s a wide variety of services available at the centre – from resumé build-ing workshops to networking

events, job fairs to application assistance and everything in between.

“It’s really a complicated thing nowadays,” Harrison says. “Looking for work is a full-time job, and it’s our full-time job to help people with theirs in any way that we can. The main thing I want people to know is that they really don’t have to job search alone.”

It’s true that finding work is an entirely different animal these days. Many employers, Harrison says, won’t even accept resumés that show up out of the blue, from people pounding the pave-ment.

It’s important for job-search-ers to know how to navigate the jobs marketplace in order to be successful in finding an employ-ment fit.

“We stay connected to the employers so we can make sure we know what they want from prospective employees and how they want to hear from them. We know where the jobs are and how to help people get them.”

The centre isn’t just for future

employees, however. It can be a valuable resource for employ-ers, as well.

From time to time, Harrison says, they have workshops and forums for business owners to help them with their hiring practices, facilitated by human resources professionals and experts in the field.

They can also connect employ-ers to training grants for their employees or other programs that can help their endeavour succeed.

And then there are the not-infrequent job fairs, where employers and job-seekers can come together to see who should work together and how they can make that happen.

There’s another of those slated for early May, and Har-rison would love to speak to interested people about it at the open house next Thursday.

“We’re not a placement agency,” she says, “We empower people to find jobs. Come down and let us show you how we do that.”

The City of Colwood has named an interim chief administrative officer.

Earlier this month Mayor Carol Hamilton officially announced the news on the city’s website that Gary Nason would be join-ing Colwood in the role, overseeing all city staff.

Nason has more than 30 years’ experience in local government, hav-ing served as CAO for the District of Central Saanich for 19 years and more recently act-ing in the same capac-ity on an interim basis for the District of Oak Bay. He previously worked for the City of Nanaimo and City of Port Alberni.

Nason replaces James Moller, who was hired in early 2014, and becomes the fourth permanent or interim CAO for the City of Col-wood since 2012. Nason will remain in the posi-tion until a permanent appointment is made by Colwood council.

New schools offer great opportunities

The Sooke School District (SD62) unveiled Royal Bay secondary school last week, inviting local politicians, trustees and media for a tour of the soon-to-be completed facility.

While the sawdust and paint fumes are still hanging in the air, the noise is at times overbearing, and there are still armies of tradespeople working on the exposed beams and raw-concrete slabs,

it’s already clear the district is doing some things right in the construction of these new facilities.

Long gone are the days where schools were purely educational institutions, standing as bastions of knowledge, standing empty, outside of when classes are in session.

And for good reason.It doesn’t make sense for the halls of a multi-

million dollar building to sit empty, echoing with the occasional footsteps of the custodial staff for two thirds of every weekday and 48 hours every weekend. How was that ever a good idea?

These new facilities are recognizing that fact. They’ve not only integrated what the province is calling “Neighbourhood Learning Centres,” which will bridge the gap between the school and the community, they’re also designed to be used in various ways by the community when classes aren’t in session.

Now it’s up to us – the public who paid for these facilities – to make use of them.

There are already various community groups chomping at the bit to get in once the schools are operational, to use their theatres, gymnasiums, board rooms and workshops. The rest of us should be lining up, as well.

There’s no telling at this point what sort of system the school district will put in place for the rental of rooms, stages or workshops, but as soon as it’s there, we’re hoping these spaces will quickly start to fill up.

Are you part of a theatre troupe that needs a stage? Are you in a sports organization having a tough time finding gym space at opportune times?

Maybe you sit on the board of a not-for-profit organization and you’re getting tired of having your meetings in one of your directors’ living rooms.

Whatever your needs are, see if you can fill them using these shiny new schools.

You paid for them, after all.

Five weeks away from the offices of the Goldstream Gazette to work on a feature film, opened my eyes to how impressive Greater Vancouver’s talent-rich film infrastructure truly is. A swath of high-level cast and crew, numerous equipment rental houses, and municipalities that welcome filming, even waiving permits and fees to welcome us – are the tip of the iceberg. I admit to being a tad jealous.

Seeing this made me wonder why that can’t also happen here? Is it just a size, or population-based industry? To some extent those are factors, but I see no reason why we can’t share a bigger piece of the economic and artistic pie.

In some ways it is happening. The introduction of the six- per-cent distant locations regional tax credit put productions in Greater Victoria on the same financial footing as other B.C. regions outside the Lower Mainland, which have benefitted from the credit since 2008. We languished without such status until February 2014.

This financial incentive convinced producers of such shows as The Gourmet Detective 2 and Monkey Up choose to spend their money here instead of elsewhere. This year is shaping up to be one of the biggest for local film production in recent memory. But can it be better?

These productions need skilled film crew, staff, food, hotels, actors and more. Sometimes it can take years to gain the experience that big productions want or need. And at this point we still lose many of our skilled singers, dancers, actors and crew members to the mainland for the promise of steadier work.

It is a vicious cycle I have seen

firsthand, as many of my friends have moved to Vancouver for that very reason. That trend won’t stop

immediately, but to curb the ebb we need more infrastructure from the ground up, starting at home, in our communities and municipalities. In school theatres, young actors flourish, growing from children to adults, not just in life but in art. Those artists need an avenue not only to train and grow roots, but to stay here once they have established themselves.

We need lighting technicians to show off the work these actors do, behind-the-scenes photographers to shoot, producers to organize, writers to scribe the words, musicians to write and play the music, all of which comes together on the stage or on the screen. When that happens they also need to stay.

Up-and-coming talents deserve a place to ply their trade and live here if they choose – and what better place than here? Hope is on the horizon.

Talk of establishing an arts facility on the West Shore have yet to prove fruitful, but that could change with Colwood and Langford going on the record as being interested. It isn’t the only step, but it is an important one, and it is my belief the time for them to act is now.

The potential for further growth in the arts is multiplied by the current boom. We can’t expect a strong artistic market to be there when we need it; we have to build the infrastructure that will sustain it so that when our youth decide where they want to live and breathe as artists, the choice they make is to stay here.

Having those skills here will push

more productions to follow suit. We have already seen sporadic

productions, including the X-Men films, come to the West Shore, but I see an opportunity for more. The known economic spin-offs of film productions is a fact, not a projection, but in order capitalize fully, planting the seeds now could expedite the process.

Having infrastructure in place is a catalyst for growth. Having improved arts facilities on the West Shore will do nothing but improve the landscape for local youth to maximize their potential in the arts. That will help build a stable of actors, teachers, costume designers, set designers, cast and crew for productions to flourish and grow. It will also help build the audience who will consume it.

It won’t happen overnight. But creating infrastructure has made a difference for athletes in Victoria, from Olympians like triathletes like Simon Whitfield and Ryder Hesjedal, to the rugby athletes training in Langford and hoping to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio.

It makes a difference long term, as we’ve seen on the world stage. It has happened in Vancouver, and while the landscape is certainly different and a direct comparison is unfair, we are far from reaching our potential.

Is it too much to dream of making an amazing feature film here, using only Vancouver Island trained cast and crew? We need amazing facilities to support amazing individuals and I believe our scenery, talent, hospitality and vigour for the arts gives us the potential to stand as equals amongst bigger cities – maybe even stand alone.

Brief return to ‘Gazoo’ offers good community reminderBased on the

number of people who expressed encouragement, surprise and dismay, or any combination of the aforementioned seeing my byline appear again, I thought a little clarification may be in order.

For those old enough to remember, I wrote for the Goldstream News Gazette from roughly 2000 to 2008, carving out a reputation as the world’s oldest cub reporter along the way. When I pulled the plug to share my lack of expertise with the City of Langford and the West Shore RCMP, I held the title as the longest serving scribe in the Gazette’s history, a mantle I still wear with a sense of misguided pride.

After I was gently nudged to the curb by Langford in January following an enjoyable and

rewarding seven-year run, I began to grapple with the meaning of semi-retired, from the perspective of keeping the bride and the bank off my back. I approached the Gazette about doing a column to add a few pounds to the pensions arriving when I turn 65 in June, and the real belt-tightening begins.

As luck would have it – and remember that lady comes in two forms – the Gazette was dealing with a reporter void in March and asked if I would be interested in returning. While the left side of my brain has grown quite comfortable with an alarm-free routine other than putting on the coffee maker for my wife, the other side and better half decided to take the offer.

As the month wound down, I found I didn’t regret the decision

to climb back into the saddle for another gallop, other than getting used to working with a Mac after seven years on a PC; no easy task for someone whose co-workers at city hall referred to as the Fred Flintstone of the computer age.

Fortunately my colleague Mike Davies was there to help answer my borderline asinine questions, and politely avoided laughing out loud until he was safely out of earshot. To summarize in one word what it’s like to return to the scene of my original crimes, it’s been, well, just swell. Kind of like running into an ex-wife you are happy to see again.

While so-called experts have been predicting the end of print media ever since I begged my way into journalism school in 1990 to short circuit my mid-life crisis, I believe reports of the demise of community newspapers are exaggerated.

The local paper provides a service that people are looking

for, news about what’s going on locally that tends to slip through the craters of what the big dogs run.

Mike helps steer the ship for where community papers are headed. He brings a wealth of social media savvy that provides myriad ways for people to stay connected to where they live, wherever they may be at that particular moment.

That’s quite a swan dive onto uncharted waters for people like me who don’t text or Tweet and have steadfastly refused to spend a single second sitting on Facebook. But it is the future of media and it’s good to see the Gazette doing its best in that regard.

I’ve also been fortunate to work with a great bunch of editors over the years, an impressive list that includes Keith Norbury, Mitch Wright, Andrew Topf, Edward (don’t call me Ted unless you know me) Hill and Don

Descoteau. Without damning with quaint praise, each one has been instrumental in helping me make modest improvements at my craft, and they all deserve an award for demonstrating excessive amounts of patience for putting up with my queries, quirks and patently politically incorrect sense of humour.

From where I sit after spending last month pounding out the copy, the crew at the Gazoo takes pride in the community and the product they produce. Publishing, sales, design and circulation; Christine, Shelley, Donna and Melissa have it covered. And I can say that with unwavering conviction and a clear conscience, because I wasn’t here long enough to infect them with my bad habits.

Christine Houghton of Aurora Innovations, the firm tasked with project communication and overseeing the public consultation process, said the public Royal Roads event will feature a series of presentations that will also be webcast online and later be available for downloading.

Another round of public consultation and various roundtables will follow Innovation Days, throughout May.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Screech didn’t sound convinced that the process would inform people enough about their options.

“So, the idea of this is that everybody who submitted something in the RFTI can just present their case?” he asked.

“Is the public going to have any way of gauging whether this solution is applicable for us? Or is it just sort of, ‘this is what potentially is possible out there, but we really have no idea whether it’s applicable to us or is affordable’?”

Houghton responded by saying Innovation Days is meant as another “prong” in the public engagement approach, where people are given as much information as possible, then encouraged to independently conduct their own research.

“It’s to give people a better understanding of what is possible out there,” she said.

The Cedric Literary Awards are calling for submissions from writers over 50.

The award program is aimed spe-cifically at recognizing and celebrat-ing unpublished writers that age or

older.“That is the commu-

nity we are trying to reach, and the reason we think it is important is because we want to give writers in that demo-graphic an opportunity to showcase their work,” said executive director Veronica Osborn.

English and French-speaking B.C. writers of fiction, creative non-

fiction and poetry, as well as First Nations storytellers, are being encouraged to submit a book man-uscript by the May 1 deadline for the juried competition. Each of the four category winners for the prov-incewide competition will receive a $3,000 prize.

“We’ve been receiving a steady stream of submissions since we put out the call for submissions,” Osborn said. “But we’re hoping for more so that we can have a compe-tition that is truly representative of the talent we know is out there of writers with a lifetime of experience to share.”

Authors who have published their own stories on their own social media channels are still eligible, but

self-published books available to the public are not.

Osborn called the competition quite unique for Canada, adding the plan is to run a national contest next year. “I am happy to say the response has been extremely posi-tive, not just from writers but from organizations that support writers.”

While she chose not to name the judges, she said all are well-known and award-winning writers in B.C. and Canada. The program is funded by Betterthan50.com and writers must be at least 50 as of Jan. 1 2015. The submission fee is $25 per cat-egory. What Canadians auto see as show season gets underwayIn the full-size pickup truck space, the domestic manufacturers have a lock on sales, dominating the import manufacturers. In the mid-size market, the opposite is true, with the Toyota Tacoma the clear leader, outselling the competition two-to-one. Domestic manufacturers have abandoned the small and mid-sized truck space in recent years leaving Toyota, Nissan and Honda to fill the void. Now, General Motors is back with two great new products, the GMC Canyon and this Chevrolet Colorado. This new truck has already won the Motor Trend Truck of the Year award and for good reason.

LooksMid-size trucks make sense for people who only occasionally need a truck or work in an urban setting with limited space. Many buyers don’t use a truck for work at all, but use their capabilities at the weekend, towing a trailer, or loading the bed with dirt bikes, ATVs or snow machines; the classic weekend warrior. The Colorado is sold with an extended cab or crew cab. The extended cab is only available with 188cm (6.2ft) bed and the four-door crew cab is sold with the same bed or the shorter 158cm (5.2ft) bed.

Chevrolet claims that the longer bed, with the tailgate lowered, can hold items up to 243cm (8ft). The beauty of the new tailgate is that it is lockable and has a soft open feature, preventing it from slamming down. The Colorado sells in three trim levels, from the base model to the LT and top Z71 off-road ready model seen here. The Z71 gets carbon coloured trim instead of chrome and is fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels and all-terrain tires. InsideIt’s a quiet truck and that is achieved thanks to triple door seals, acoustic wheel liners and engine sound insulation. It all comes together to make a very comfortable cabin. The dash is bit more utility driven over the opulent cabin in the larger truck but there is plenty of seating for four adults or five in a pinch. The base radio readout is 10.6cm but the middle LT and Z71 get a bigger 20cm screen.

Navigation is only available on the LT and Z71 trucks. DriveUnder the hood is either a 2.5L 4-cylinder with 200hp or a 3.6L V6 with 305hp. The V6 will most likely be the volume seller due to the 3,175kg (7,000lbs) towing capacity. This Colorado is certainly comfortable enough as a daily commuter and it

wouldn’t fatigue the driver after a long highway run. There is still a diesel engine to come: a 2.8L turbo 4-cylinder Duramax engine, producing 369lb-ft of torque.

The Z06 Corvette option has typically had a single purpose: To humble would-be Corvette competitors foreign and domestic, offering super-car performance and handling at a price point that can’t be achieved by any other manufacturer!Here are a few fun facts about the Corvette Z06:The first Z06 was built in 1963. The second-generation — or C2 — Corvette was the first to offer the Z06 package. Corvette godfather Zora Arkus-Duntov conceived the option package that mated Chevy’s fuel injected 327 V-8 with uprated brakes and suspension (and in most cases a larger, competition-ready fuel tank) to give privateer racers a leg up in competition during a time when GM couldn’t field a factory race team. Simply called an RPO (“regular production order”) Z06, it was pricey and consequently selected mostly by owners who intended to take their Corvettes racing. Today 1963 “big tank” Z06s are among the most collectible Corvettes.The option was dormant for 28 years. There was no C3 or C4 Z06, and the name finally returned for 2001 in a very special C5. Offered

only in the most rigid and lightest-weight hardtop body style, the 2001 model came with an LS6 small block rated at 385 hp. It was quickly uprated to 405 hp for the 2002 model year — as if the official ratings mattered. In a fine Corvette tradition going back to the 1967 L88, it was found that Chevy had underrated the horsepower significantly; north of 425 hp was closer to the truth.Since 2001, only model years 2005 and 2014 have been without a Z06. In every iteration but the C2, there has been at least a one-model-year lag to let the new vintage breathe before shocking the crap out of enthusiasts with the introduction of the Z06. The C6 Z06 arrived as a 2006 model and the C7 Z06 will be a 2015 model.The 2004 C5 Z06 and 2012 C6 Z06 are among the elite group of street cars ever to have broken an eight-minute time around the Nord-schleife, part of the Nürburgring complex near Cologne, Germany. The 2015 Z06 will almost certainly join this group (probably with the A/C

blasting, the stereo on and not otherwise breaking a sweat). The Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell EV is a loud vehicle, though not in the way you might expect.In fact, when it comes to driving it, it’s as quiet as they get on the inside and out. But it speaks loudly of how future propulsion of our vehicles is evolving. This particular Tucson is powered by compressed hydrogen gas.The concept of fuel cell EVs isn’t new. They’ve been around for years but Hyun-dai is the first automotive company to make hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles available to the Canadian public and it’s right here at the coast.Living with one of these vehicles is pleasantly underwhelming. If you’re expecting it to be an otherworldly ex-perience, you’ll be disappointed. I think that’s part of why I liked it so much.It’s an electric vehicle to the core but the way that power is produced isn’t like any other EVs available to the public. Here’s a little bit of tech talk about how it works.Hyundai literature says, “The Hyundai Tucson FCEV stores hydrogen gas (140L capacity) and draws an inflow of air to the fuel cell stack. There is no combus-tion of hydrogen and the stack has no moving parts. The electrochemical pro-cess of combining oxygen and hydrogen in the fuel cell stack creates electricity to power the vehicle's electric motor and charge an onboard battery. The only by-product of the process is pure water

vapour, resulting in zero greenhouse-gas emissions.”Acceleration is decent (0-100km/h in 12.5 seconds) thanks to its 221 lb-ft of torque.And its 134 horsepower isn’t anything to scoff at, especially for urban driving.At no point in my daily driving – high-way or city – did I feel the Tucson FCEV lacked power. It’s not the most endowed crossover, but it makes it up in other ways.On a full tank, you can get upwards of 420 kilometres, which, considering the fuel cell EVs I’ve driven in the past had maxed out at 200 km, is pretty fantastic.Then there’s the question of, where do you fill up? – Those who are considering applying to lease a Hyundai Tucson FCEV (more on that later) need to keep in mind that there’s only one fuelling station. The automaker partnered with BC Hydro’s Powertech facility in Surrey to accommodate drivers. You also need to consider that you have to fuel during business hours 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday to Friday.I should point out that this type of vehi-cle isn’t for everyone so one might ask what the point is then. In my opinion, it’s about offering customers an alterna-tive to fossil fuels.Sure, there are some hoops to jump through at the moment but that doesn’t mean the infrastructure and vehicles themselves won’t evolve. The Tucson FCEV is highly refined. It drives with a smooth disposition, has room for five inside, and is a charming

crossover. Slip inside the cabin and you’re greeted by a welcoming atmo-sphere. When you press the push button start, you initially hear some chimes and clicking, but there’s no engine that starts to purr. Then you drive like you would any other vehicle.When it came to projected range to actual kilometres driven, the Tucson FCEV was pretty much bang on. I didn’t feel like I needed to drive it in a different fashion than I normally would. Meaning, I didn’t take it any easier on hills. If I needed to accelerate quickly, I did. With the help of a firefighter, she guides plumes of white to and fro until the flames dis-appear underneath a cloud of white. Eubank slowly steps back into a lineup of students taking in the Western

Communities Fire and Life Safety Expo at the Metchosin Fire Hall.

“(This) is invaluable; this type of thing needs to go on whether it is a large format like this, or out at a fire hall, or if it’s individually in the classroom in the municipality,” said Col-wood firefighter Dallas Lozoway. “Kids need to see this. They need the hands-on part of fire safety.”

Lozoway and dozens of volunteers were on site cycling through class after class of

Grade 4 students, moving them through the eight stations. The children spend approximately 15 min-utes at each one before boarding the bus and heading back to school. More than 700 students come through education stations, which range from fire extinguisher use to earthquake safety, wil-derness safety to stop, drop, and roll.

“It is very hands on,” said Saseenos elemen-tary teacher Lauren Coombes. “The chil-

dren get to use the fire extinguishers and they get to see people in the community who get to do this for a living … It’s much better for them to come out here rather than learn it in the classroom.”

She observed her students being very engaged and learning things from the interac-tive stations. “I’ve had some students who

have (experienced the Expo) before and there is knowledge being retained from previ-ous years, so it’s really great to see.”

All West Shore fire departments, West Shore RCMP, CRD dis-patch centre and Lang-ford emergency social services come together once a year to offer the event.

deputy fire chief Kerry Zado, on hand for this year’s Expo, says it’s an important joint effort that is all about serving community and saving lives.

“One year we had a young mother with a stove fire put the fire out with (an extin-guisher) and slide the pot over the stove. When we got to the call we found out she

learned that here in the Fire Safety Expo 16 years earlier,” he said. “That solidifies what we are doing; it is so important. What we say at the start is that the lessons learned here today could save your life.”

In April of 1999, as the story goes, ex-NHL hockey player Len Barrie cut down 28 trees in what he thought was his back yard to improve his view. It turned out, how-ever, those trees were actu-ally the property of the Royal Colwood Golf Club.

Barrie settled his law suit with Royal Colwood, agree-ing to pay $14,700 for dam-ages. But he and his family were also kicked out of and banned for life from mem-bership in the private, mem-bers-only facility.

So he went off to make his own golf course, which soon became the huge, multi-billion resort and series of subdivisions on the slopes of Skirt Mountain.

Bear Mountain now features 36 holes of golf designed by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, a world-class fitness facility and dining amenities, tennis facilities, a Westin hotel and is, as of this past January, also the official High Performance Training Centre of the Cana-dian National Mountain Bike Team.

“There are golf resort areas that have residen-tial components, but they’re not 20 minutes from a capital city. It’s a huge strength for us to be in that kind of position,” she says.

The development allows people to have their primary residence at a high-end resort.

“When Ecoasis bought Bear Mountain (in Octo-ber 2013),” adds the company’s financial expert David Clarke, “one of the things we really wanted to focus on was not being so golf-centric. We love golf, we think golf is the great cornerstone here, we’re not messing with the golf, but we wanted to create other amenities to drive the value here – the value to both our current residents and our future ones.”

Mountain biking and tennis are both becoming a big deal up there, he says, which along with the well-established golf benefits, make a sort of tri-fecta of outdoor recreation pillars.

“We’re not taking focus off of golf,” Doyle says, “we’re broadening its appeal and enhancing it.

“We want people to ask, ‘where can I play, live and work all at the same time?’” Clarke says.

Right now, Ecoasis’ answer is Turnberry – their current focus in terms of residential develop-ment. The 51-lot subdivision is set along the ninth fairway of the Mountain course. Nestled in that serene mountain setting, its proximity to the ame-nities in the nearby village makes it a unique resi-dential opportunity that people are intrigued by.

“Any of the people who have come to look at the project absolutely love that aspect of it,” Doyle says. “It’s a quiet neighbourhood, but with easy access to everything people love about Bear Mountain.”

The properties that have sold – about 60 per cent of what’s available – are, as Doyle puts it, “a nice combination of end users and builders.” In other words, some people are building for them-selves and others are building as a business.

Unlike some subdivisions, where there are lim-

ited options in terms of home styles – the pro-verbial cookie-cutter neighbourhood – there are no repeated designs in Turnberry. There are cov-enants in place ensuring builders must follow cer-tain design principals, Doyle says, but each house will be unique, with homes custom-designed for the lot they’re on.

Ecoasis can point “end-user” buyers to archi-tects and designers to help create their ideal home and have it built. But with builders buying a number of lots in Turnberry, there will also be finished homes that people can just purchase and move into.

And while the overall focus is being broadened at the resort, each lot purchase still comes with a golf membership to Bear Mountain.

There are more projects in the planning stages,

which Clarke says will likely diversify their offer-ings further.

The goal for the next few subdivisions is to have a mix of single-family dwellings, executive townhomes, smaller patio-type homes and pos-sibly even multi-family complexes or condomini-ums, as well as adding to the area’s commercial and retail offerings.

“This is the new Bear Mountain,” he says. “This is the start of a new vision for a sustainable long-term development, which takes what’s great about what’s already here and builds upon that.”

One thing is certain about the retirement of Sandi Burchill after 30 years with Black Press and its previous incar-nations: many co-work-ers will be “right sad” to see her go.

Everyone’s favou-rite Maritimer heads off into the Langford sunset today (April 10), following a career in which she became indispensable for the community newspa-per company that pub-lishes the Gazette.

She winds up that span as Victoria News office manager and also doing ad control for a variety of publications out of the downtown Victoria office.

Well known around West Shore circles as the volunteer training co-ordinator for the Langford arm of emer-gency social services – husband Tom is the Langford ESS director – Sandi has served in many capacities with Black Press since she began in 1984. She started as part-time circulation manager for both the Peninsula News Review and Gold-stream News Gazette, at which her first task being to clean and orga-nize the storage room.

“I think there’s been a Burchill family member cleaning and sorting at the Gazette ever since,” she says with a laugh.

At one point during a previous stint down-town, she was named office manager for the fledgling This Week publications, the begin-ning of what became known as the News Group, the company’s collection of Greater Victoria community papers.

“It kind of feels like full circle as the papers move back into the individual communities today,” she says.

Coworker Kathryn Jodrell, who was men-tored by Sandi and has worked next to her for

years, called it “the end of an era.”

“I don’t think there’s many people in this company that are as gracious and loving as Sandi is. She’s poured a lot of love into the peo-ple she’s worked with over the years.”

Langford Fire Chief Bob Beckett appreci-ates her work as a com-munity volunteer.

“All of the ESS in the

Southern Island owe Sandi a big vote of thanks,” he says. “She puts a lot of effort into regional things that go on, such as the training and the conferences.”

Like her cowork-ers, who arranged to send her home in a limo today, he says it’s her friendly and loving manner and “down-east” personality that set her apart. “There’s

some people you just care highly about and she’s definitely one of them,” he says.

Retirement will see her travel more and continue to volunteer. She’ll spend more time with family, includ-ing daughters Arlene (Glenn) and Traci (Chad) and grandkids Meagan, Emma, Hunter and Grace, aged from 12 to 22.
