additive available as of 8 Mar 2007. As a concentrated detergent, it is unsurpassed in cleaning combustion chamber deposits, intake valve deposits and port fuel injector deposits, eliminating the need for expensive fuel injector cleaning procedures. The product is ideal for use prior to emissions inspections. It also helps maintain peak engine efficiency, fuel economy, power and drivability in newer low-mileage engines. In engines with accumulated deposits, testing showed Amsoil PI provided the following clean-up benefits after only one tank of gasoline: improves fuel mileage an average of 2.3% and up to 5.7%; reduces emissions - hydrocarbons (HC) up to 15%, carbon monoxide (CO) up to 26%, nitrous oxides (NOx) up to 17%; restores power and performance; reduces need for costly higher octane fuel; reduces noise from carbon rap and pre-ignition; better drivability; and smoother operation. These substitutes must leave the water as clean as possible when separating it from oil, and must be biodegradable, clean and efficient. The IFP signed research agreements with two companies as part of this programme; one with Oleon and the other with Seppic. Oleon already had a range of products based on biodegradable esters, and some of these are currently in field trials (brief details in the original article) for the IFP. In the search with Seppic for green surfactants to clean oil installations, the IFP developed very efficient biodegradable surfactants from sugar derivatives. According to the IFP, Seppic’s expertise in alkylpolyglucosides and in detergents was useful here, and the technology could be of interest to the industrial detergents sector. The only problem is that these new processes are not 100% green. However, the IFP expects that increasingly tough rules and the need to present a good public image could push companies to carry out more research in these areas. Suppliers also noted growing demand for botanical extracts, natural fats and oils, and other natural ingredients, as well as products that help lower overall formulation expenses. Observers say recent trends indicate growing demand for products that are sustainable, biodegradable and do not harm the skin. Key product markets are becoming tight following an extended period of excess capacity and weak markets, said suppliers. Observers say the ethoxylate surfactants market is well balanced, although margins are below expected levels. Dow has renewed R&D activities in surfactants and expects to launch a new line of ethoxylates in late 2007. Analysts say suppliers face challenges in commodity alcohol markets, as downstream ethoxylation capacity has been cut and high-purity ethylene oxide is in short supply. Tallow prices are also climbing due to rising demand for biodiesel, which can use tallow as a raw material.
