Honoring Robert B. Pringle, Winston & Strawn LLP

Master of Ceremonies, Paul R. Giffin, Winston & Strawn LLP

2010 AntitRuSt lAWYeR OF the YeAR—ROBeRt B. PRingleThe Antitrust and Unfair Competition Section of the State Bar of California is pleased to honor Robert B. Pringle as the 2010 Antitrust Lawyer of the Year.

Bob Pringle has been an icon of the antitrust defense bar in San Francisco and nationally for close to 40 years. Bob, a New Jersey native, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1966 and Duke University School of Law in 1969. After a brief teaching stint at Penn State University, Bob headed west to California and clerked on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In 1972, he joined the firm formerly known at Thelen Marrin Johnson & Bridges in San Francisco where he practiced for over 35 years and was Chair of the firm’s Antitrust Group for many years. In 2008, Bob and his antitrust team joined the San Francisco office of Winston & Strawn LLP where he is a partner. Bob Pringle’s practice focuses on antitrust and complex commercial litigation. Representing clients on a range of antitrust matters in state and federal courts and before administrative tribunals, he is particularly experienced handling cartel cases, civil class actions and criminal grand jury matters, contested mergers, tying and monopolization cases. He also has been involved in unfair competition, securities, trade secrets and other intellectual property claims, contract disputes, fraud and RICO claims. In addition, Pringle provides counseling and serves as special litigation counsel to corporate boards of directors, many of which are Fortune 200 and 500 companies in the United States and abroad.

Bob has been named multiple times in Chambers USA’s Guide to America’s Leading Business Lawyers, Best Lawyers in the United States, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law and San Francisco Magazine’s Super Lawyer list. In addition to being a member of the State Bar of California’s Antitrust and Unfair Competition Section, Bob is a member of the ABA Section of Antitrust Law, the ABA Section of Public Utility, Communications and Transportation Law, where he is a member of the Council and Chair of the Antitrust Committee, and the ABA Litigation Section. He is a lifetime member of the Board of Visitors of Duke University Law School.

In his scarce spare time, Bob enjoys racing his Porsche, fly fishing and playing golf. Together with his wife Becky, he is an avid fundraiser for a variety of charitable and civic causes.

GSI LUNCHeON SPeAKer Edith Ramirez was sworn in as a Commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission on April 5, 2010, to a term that expires on September 25, 2015.

Prior to joining the Commission, Ramirez was a partner in the Los Angeles office of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP, where she handled a broad range of complex business litigation, including successfully representing clients in intellectual property, antitrust and unfair competition matters. She also has extensive appellate litigation experience.

From 1993-1996, Ramirez was an associate at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, LLP, in Los Angeles. She clerked for the Hon. Alfred T. Goodwin in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 1992-1993.

Throughout her career, Ramirez has been active in a variety of professional and community activities. Most recently, she served as the Vice President on the Board of Commissioners for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the nation’s largest municipal utility.

Ramirez graduated from Harvard Law School cum laude (1992), where she served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review, and holds an A.B. in History magna cum laude from Harvard-Radcliffe College (1989).

Ramirez is a native of Southern California.

The Antitrust and Unfair Competition Law Section was established by the State Bar of California in 1981 for the purpose of furthering the knowledge of its members in federal and state antitrust and unfair competition law. The focus of the Section is on both litigation—including individual actions by competitors and class actions by direct/ indirect purchases, and the procedural aspects of such litigation—as well as antitrust counseling. It deals with both private and government (federal, state and local) enforcement actions, including government criminal procedures. The Section is governed by an Executive Committee appointed by the Board of Governors of the State Bar of California.

Section membershipThere are no prerequisites to membership. All interested attorneys, judges, non-attorneys, paralegals, law students and out-of-state attorneys are invited to enroll in the Section.

Standing CommitteesThe Section has the following standing committees in which Section members are urged to participate: •Education/Programs •Legislation •Publications/Journal

JournalThe Section publishes a periodic journal—Competition.Members who wish to author articles or assist with publications are encouraged to contact the Editor.

ProgramsThe Section annually presents an MCLE-accredited Antitrust Institute, at which it confers the Antitrust

Lawyer of the Year Award, and a program on the Unfair Competition Law. It also sponsors educational programs at the Section Education Institute, the State Bar of California Annual Meeting, and through informal, “brown-bag” seminars throughout the year.
