intolerant of suffering, with an almost abnormal shrinking from physical infirmity, when she finds herself, through an accident in the hunting-field, condemned to lie on her back for the rest of her life, she faces the future with a stoical courage which compels admiration and we rejoice when at last she finds peace of mind.

The scenes are laid in English country-houses and later at Pau, where the romance begun in a cottage, is brought to a happy conclusion. We would welcome more books of this type from Mrs. Sutton 's pen.

Golden Memories. Vol. II: More Love Letters, Prison Letters and Others. Edited by Sophie O'Brien. (Dublin: M. H. Gill and Son. 5/- net.)

This companion volume to " The Love Letters, and Prison Letters of William O'Brien " consists mainly of Mrs. O'Brien's letters to her future husband. At first sight it seems a pity that she did not discover these letters until the first volume had gone to the printer. Had all the letters been published together they would have been mutually explanatory. Yet besides its historical value, this volume is of value as revealing a temperament widely differing from anything commonly met in Ireland; the Continental tempera ment, it might be styled. A clearer impression of its characteristics is given by publishing together, almost ex clusively of any others, the letters of Marie Raffalovich and her daughter, Mrs. O'Brien.

The book is beautifully produced. The printing and paper are exceptionally fine. At least twice, however, the com positor has put a dash instead of a hyphen. This is a very small point, but the first time the mistake occurs is on the very first page and it makes the quotation from Mrs. Brown ing very puzzling reading. The mistake is repeated on page 104.
