DISTRICT DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

District Directors Message

Recently a number of us participated in the "Rock-Hard Buns Ride" through the Kootenays in BC. It was

reminiscent of the previous Gypsy Run with some modifications. All I can say is WOW. What a great ride.

Keiller Gowans organized this ride for us all to enjoy, thank you Keiller!

Perhaps it was the fact we had not all been out for some time and we had not seen some our riding friends

in a while, or possibly it was the magnificent scenery, either way the ride rocked! (Pardon the pun).

Just an FYI, we were riding some the best roads in British Columbia according to the Destination Highways

book Published by Brian Bosworth and Michael Sanders. In fact, some

of these roads rate in the top ten in BC with one or more in the top ten

in Western N. America.

When you do get out for that ride, be mindful we need items for the

newsletter and to write about. Your photos and narratives will be most

welcome for the district newsletter as well as your chapters'. Please

take a few moments to record the trip so we can publish the good

time everyone had.

Several Chapters have been sponsoring rides as well. BC-C recently

went to Logan Lake and a great little Cidery for lunch. They let us use

their picnic area, it was beautiful and a special spot that will be

remembered. I know BC-A & BC-V have been active as well. I would

like to hear more about it for our newsletter. Let us know what you all

have been up to!

Your district team has been working hard keeping the "wheels in motion" at GWRRA, maintaining your

Districts member numbers. We are the only district in all of GWRRA with membership in the black, even

with the Covid-19 issue. Now it is time to keep membership momentum going forward. I promised in the

last newsletter that a recruitment plan would be in place by now. I had to delay the project, however, by the

second week of September or sooner it should be in place and ready to go.

I encourage you all to participate in this new program. It will be a Win-Win-Win, for the recruit, for the

recruiter and for GWRRA. It will run from September to November.

Ride safe out there, and remember to have some fun!

Now for Some News

GWRRA – NWC, your district will be attempting to host ARC's once again. We are working on venues so

that we can run the range course as well as physically distance for the classroom portions of the

course…Stay tuned for these potential events.

2021 Wings in the Cariboo 2.1 Rally: as we are looking forward, we have events planned for next year.

Knowing the dates well in advance, now is the time to plan riding next year. Register today for the "Wings in

the Cariboo 2.1" rally.

Register today for the 2021 rally at: https://wingsinthecariboo.com/

Any questions please direct them to: yours truly [email protected] or to Mr. Dave Ward:

Webmaster [email protected].

Wing Ding 42 was cancelled for 2020 due to Covid-19. The GWRRA has moved Wing Ding 42 to 2021. It will

still be hosted in at the Springfield Expo Center in Springfield Missouri, June 29, 2021 through July 3, 2021.

Registration is open and they have "bundle specials". https://www.wing-ding.org/

Chapters BC-C & BC-A are continuing to hold Zoom calls. Chapter BC-C has been able to stay in touch with

the membership and more members keep joining the conversation every month! The zoom call is a great

option to stay connected. I encourage other chapters in the district to give it try. If you need some

coaching give the district team a call. Members can always use the member forum as well should they wish

to reach out.

In order to keep everyone engaged and in touch we have set up a new "Member Forum" on our website.

You can connect with any other member registered on the forum page. I also encourage those of you that

use Facebook join the District NWC Facebook page. You can stay up to date and reach out to other

members.

We are going to implement a phone program in the next few weeks, reaching out to members we have not

seen in a while, just to say hello and keep them included in the group.

If you as a member have something to say, especially a story of a ride or trip you have taken recently, I

encourage you to send something to the district newsletter editor as well as the Chapter newsletter editors.

They are always looking interesting articles and news. All of the contacts will be on the respective websites.

GWRRA District NWC has a new recruitment program, "get three, get a 1-year membership" for the

recruiter. See the brochure in this newsletter for details. We will be offering 14 months for the price of 12

for the new recruit…a win-win situation for all concerned. This is a Canadian program only. It is National.

However, in our district we are going to offer even more incentive for the new recruit. Stay tuned as

you will be receiving all the detail via email the 1st or 2nd week of September.

How can you help your district? If your membership is coming due, renew. If you know someone who's

membership is about to expire, talk to them about the value of membership and encourage them to renew.

If you know someone that is on the fence about joining, now is the time. Recruit someone new to our

group!

Stay tuned for all of the events on our web site www.gwrra-nwc.com & Facebook

https://www.facebook.com/groups/2033564500194434/ for updates as they happen.

Thank you for being members of GWRRA; your membership and participation is what makes GWRRA the finest international riding association in North America.

Until I see you all again, Be safe – Ride safe.

Respectfully

Kevin Bramhoff

Team GWRRA,

Please join Sherry and I in congratulating Kevin Bramhoff and Karin Young on their appointment as Director's Assistants overseeing and supporting Canada.

LIFE MEMBER, GOLD MEMBER, NEW LIFE MEMBER - ARE YOU CONFUSED?

Over the past several months I have had questions about GWRRA’s Life Member program and as I didn't have the answers I went looking for them. Some of what I found was confusing and/or misleading which isn’t surprising as sometimes terms are used without a full explanation. Here is the overview of the programs as explained by Anita Alkire (former President GWRRA) in her article of 2019-May with some clarification from the Home Office.

Life Member: this is the original program which ended in the early 2000’s. It offered membership for free after you completed 20 years of consecutive, paid membership in GWRRA prior to 2004-December-31. (GWRRA was founded in 1977). In 2019 Life Members received a letter explaining that they will always be Life Members, but their future Wing World magazines and Gold Books will be available to them electronically only. Should a life member want to receive printed copies of these documents then a contribution to cover postage was requested:

• USD $30.00 for both Wing World and the Gold Book

• USD $5.00 for a printed copy of the Gold Book only

Some original Life Members felt that the contribution was to maintain their Life Membership and that is incorrect. Life Members will always be Life Members of GWRRA.

Gold Member: was the next program introduced and ran from about 2002/03 to 2007. It allowed those with 10 years of membership already to buy the remaining years so they would become Gold

Page 7: GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION NORTH WEST COAST ... · Wing Ding 42 was cancelled for 2020 due to Covid-19. The GWRRA has moved Wing Ding 42 to 2021. It will still be hosted in

Gold Wing Road Riders Association – North West Coast District – September 2020 - Page 7

Members with very similar benefits as the Life Member program. Gold Memberships were transitioned to New Life Memberships.

New Life Member: this program was introduced in 2007 and is the program that continues today. There are similarities to the original Life Member program with a major exception ... New Life Members still pay dues (either annual or multi-year payments are accepted) but at a reduced rate. All Members who complete 20 consecutive years of paid membership in GWRRA since the original program ended, except those who took advantage of the Gold Program, are eligible to become New Life Members. The day after you pay for the 20th year GWRRA will process a New Life Membership card and send you the patches and pins associated with Life Membership (yes it feels like you’ve paid for 21, but GWRRA works on anniversary years so you don’t become 1 until you’ve completed your first year).

All these life programs include(d) reduced registration at Wing Ding, discounts at the GWRRA store and other opportunities but Gold and New Life memberships have always required the payment of dues at a reduced rate. The reduced rate covers administrative costs associated with running a large organization (including postage).

When determining if you are eligible for a New Life membership it is important to remember that the 20 years required to qualify must have been consecutive with no breaks.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to send me an email and I will get back to you.

You’re Dressing for the Slide, Not the Ride

We’ve seen them a lot during these warmer months. They’re on cruisers, sports bikes and yes, even occasionally, on Gold Wings. Who are we talking about? We’re talking about all those riders out there who choose to ride in short sleeved shirts, or worse, tank tops. And fingerless gloves, or worse, no gloves at all. Sometimes they will wear jeans, but we’ve seen them in shorts with sneakers or even sandals on their feet. I’m sure we’ve all heard the excuses as well. There is the always popular, “It’s too hot to wear all that stuff.” Then there is the “All that stuff is too restrictive” argument. You get that one now and again. We’ve even heard, “I’m a good rider, I’m not going to crash.” Uh-huh. I know that being an All The Gear All The Time (ATGATT) rider can be kind of a pain. Yes, riding jackets and pants can be pretty warm, particularly if you’re in a lot of traffic. However, the newer style mesh gear we now see allows substantial air flows, and it provides more abrasion protection than jeans and significantly more than you get from a short sleeved shirt or tank top. I know that full‐fingered gloves can be restrictive but they aren’t as bad as having your hands wrapped in gauze. Try buttoning your shirt with your index and middle fingers wrapped in 6 layers of gauze, now that’s restrictive. Yes, boots can be hot, but a rock kicked up by the car in front of you can break your toe, (something I experienced myself personally just a few weeks ago. The boot protected my little tootsies quite nicely thank you very much) and consider this, a cast is really hot and itchy as well, and you don’t get to take it off at the end of the day. Lastly, I’m pretty sure that crashing their motorcycle is not on anyone’s “Things To Do Today” list. Hmm…..let’s see: “Go to the Post Office. Drop off the dry cleaning. Crash the bike.” While you may not plan to crash, someone out there may not have gotten that particular memo. Now, don’t get me wrong, I still ride in my t-shirts and shorts; but they’re under my riding gear. That gives me the benefit of sun/wind/abrasion protection and, when I get where I’m going, I can stroll about in my t-shirt/shorts; swap my boots for a pair of sandals and I’m good to go. For what it’s worth, I’ve worn this kind of gear in temperatures into the upper‐30’s for all day rides (anybody who’s done the Duffy Lake Loop and experienced the Lillooet-Lytton-Hope corridor in mid-summer know what that’s like) and with the airflow through the gear that is available, one can be (reasonably) comfortable except when stopped in traffic. Remember, asphalt is unforgiving. It doesn’t care that the weather is hot, or how well you can ride. You should always Dress for the Slide, Not for the Ride.

Respectfully Submitted

Rider's Gazette Presented by "The Carbon Monoxide Warriors" Terry Teeft & Kevin Bramhoff – 19th Edition

Fellow Riders:

Over coffee the other day Terry & I were talking about the news of the day while social distancing of course. The subject of Motorcycle Etiquette came up, often referred to as The Code of the Road.

Don't be that Guy or Gal! Terry and I have written about this before in differing contexts however you do not want to be the person that ignores rules, and is unsafe on the road. The one that rides like there is no one else around and is inattentive to the situation surrounding them, doing whatever they feel like doing regardless of safety. You know that person!

If you are a seasoned rider or an occasional rider, we should all comprehend the fact that there are certain rules of the road that we adhere to. Known as "Motorcycle Etiquette" or "The Code" are rules that are appreciated by all riders.

Honor "The Code" of the road.

There is honor in riding. As we hold other riders in high esteem there is a certain degree of respect for each other and for that reason, we have an unspoken code that all responsible riders are expected to uphold. Paying respect to other riders by using "the wave" are all understood by most riders. There is a golden rule that we will outline later in this article. Details of the code:

Be Happy to Lend a hand when it’s needed.

We all have destinations and schedules to maintain, if you see a rider pulled over, for whatever reason, slow down wave and see if they require assistance. They will let you know if they need help. If they look broken down or the Helmet is placed behind the bike, the universal sign of distress amongst all riders, Stop. See if you can render some assistance and at least get them set up with communications or when you hit the next town send someone back for them, give them a ride etc., it the right thing to do and the Golden Rule, never leave anyone behind.

Pay attention.

One of the best ways to stay safe. Keep your motorcycling skills sharp, learn more as you go, avoid distractions and keep your head & eyes up. Yes, once you are out there experiencing the ultimate freedom in a highly charged emotional way it is easy to forget "The Code". Be courteous, be safe.

Don't Sneak Up!

Recently on a weekend ride up to Logan lake BC we had some Squids (see below) blow past us at extremely high speed…how do I know this? Well we were 30 over as it was. Scared the daylights out of me. Motorcycle Etiquette simply states that when you come upon another bike avoid blowing past them or Honking your horn. You know us Canadians; it is not polite to pass without the riders in front understanding where you are and where you are going. It's also a safety issue…the riders in front may not be as experienced or seasoned as you. If their skill levels are not what they should be it could cause an accident.

Once the riders in front are aware of you and see you then it is safe to pass, they may even wave you on. Consider this, waiting for a passing lane may not be a bad idea either, unless it is safe to pass according to the laws of the region, you do not want to put yourself or others into harm's way just because you are in a rush. Hey you may even get a ticket, so, stay out of danger and stay safe.

Page 21: GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION NORTH WEST COAST ... · Wing Ding 42 was cancelled for 2020 due to Covid-19. The GWRRA has moved Wing Ding 42 to 2021. It will still be hosted in

Don’t be a jerk.

Show all riders respect, don’t trash talk someone else’s bike, regardless of the brand or condition. You may be or think you are the best, most bad ass rider on the planet. Keep this in mind; "everyone on a bike has earned their right to the road, just like you".

You may be a Gold Wing rider or a Harley rider for life, however every rider out there is entitled to their preferences regarding make and model.

Your ride is your pride and joy, so is theirs!

Besides all trash talk does is cause discord and bad feeling which is the last thing we need in a group. That kind of distraction causes issues beyond the norm and can lead to real problems.

Remember to wave, (The Wave)

Convention dictates you should wave to fellow riders. It is considered courtesy and respectful in riding culture. When you pass another rider going in the opposite direction show

mutual respect and give them the wave or a head nod. It's a greeting that acknowledges the common bond in the motorcycling brotherhood.

Who invented the Biker Wave? What are its origins? Terry & I will do some research as it is a great subject for the next article.

As Terry says, be mindful: "as members of the motorcycling world our similarities are much more profound than our differences and that many common themes run through all of our practices. On the road or over the trails we are all subject to the same very real safety concerns, heat or cold, threat of mechanical “misadventures”, and the ever-present hazard of inattentive "cage" drivers with whom we must share the road.

This goes beyond brand or style of our bikes, and serves to emphasize the fact that (whether we like it or not) we are all “subsets” of a much larger culture and how we treat one another is a critical element in the ongoing effort to showcase motorcycling in a positive light".

Until we see you all on the road again, Be Safe – Ride Safe.

TELEGRAPH COVE 2020

On the 10th of August, we began a three-day adventure to Telegraph Cove. Tucked away on the Eastern Coast of Northern Vancouver Island, historic Telegraph Cove has a rich and colourful past and is a major destination during the summer months for visitors from around the world.

In 1912, the Superintendents of Telegraphs, Alfred Marmaduke “Duke” Wastell, was looking for a suitable destination for a lineman’s station, as well as a northern terminus for the telegraph line from Campbell River. The protected cove proved ideal and hence received the name Telegraph Cove.

The very first resident was a telegraph lineman named Bobby Cullerne. He lived in a one-room shed-like structure that still stands today. A salmon saltery and a small sawmill were erected by “Duke” and a group of Japanese workers in the mid-1920s. By the early 1930s the Telegraph Cove Mill was in full operation. Logs from the mill were used to build houses all over the North Island.

During World War II, the small village was used as a relay station. The RCAF took over the sawmill, installed servicemen to run the mill, and used the lumber for the war effort. After the war ended, the mill was returned to the Wastell family.

Many of the restored buildings that now form Telegraph Cove Resort were from that period of history.

The resort was created in 1979 by Gordie and Marilyn Graham, long-time residents of the North Island, primarily to take advantage of the great recreational ocean fishing. A campground and marina marked the beginning of the resort, which was the first of its kind built in the region. Gordie and Marilyn continue to own and operate the resort, along with a summer staff of about 100.

The first day we rode up island. We took the scenic route along highway 19A, which is the old Island Highway and hugs the coast from Parksville, all the way to Campbell River. Along the way we stopped for an awesome lunch at the Griffin Pub in Comox. This is an old favorite that I’ve been haunting since the late 80’s.

After lunch, the scenery really began with the ride from Campbell River to Telegraph Cove. The road heads inland from some natural beauty, relatively untouched by human hands.

Upon arrival in Telegraph Cove, we had a wonderful meal at the resort’s restaurant (the Killer Whale Café) and then quickly snuggled down into our rustic cabin, located right on the old board walk of the marina.

Day two we had a lazy morning, enjoying the baked goods and coffee of Sally’s Food Bar. Sally, the owner’s dog, always ran free, but usually stayed close to Gordie, the owner. She was great at greeting people and chasing away the bears. Unfortunately, in 2019 Sally was killed by a bear she was chasing away. Sally will be missed.

We spent the balance of the morning and much of the afternoon sitting on the board walk with good coffee and good books, enjoying the scenery. There were numerous boats coming and going, kayakers and an amazing pod of Orcas that were frolicked just outside the cove for about an hour.

After one of our many card games (where Jennifer kicked Tony’s ass), we snuggled down for a nap, thinking we were going kayaking later in the evening. Unfortunately, our trip was cancelled due to a bit of wind coming up, and so we went for a motorcycle ride to Port Hardy instead. During the ride we saw two black bears, one of which had somehow lost a leg, but still seemed able to get around just fine.

The evening was closed out with another outstanding meal at the Killer Whale Café, and another game of cards, that Tony lost… again.

Day three and time to head home, but not before stopping in at Comox for a great visit and wonderful lunch with Uncle David and Aunt Barbara.

J.A.M – JUST ANOTHER MEMBER’S “POINT OF VIEW”

It's not always about the ride

Sometimes it's about being a tourist, or a traveler / explorer. Sometimes you just want to take a break, relax, enjoy your particular surroundings. Stop and smell the roses. There are some fascinating places that when you ride through at break neck speed you may never see again, so maybe, just maybe, stop for a while.

What I have gleaned from the last few rides I have been on is that most people enjoy riding as well as socializing. Most want a combination of the two, a ride and social time. When members are given the choice of a combination event or a long hard ride out of the gate, the middle and the end, the latter greatly limits the number of participants.

Our ride coordinators at all levels work hard at planning these events and personally I realize and support the efforts, however, perhaps in the future we could take a page from the SCMA play book. By all means plan a route and ensure it is some of the best riding available, however give the members the choice to alter the routes if they so desire. As long as they all meet at the destinations and they are all happy, what is the problem?

There are some folks (All of the Clockwise group) on this last ride (Rock Hard Buns Ride) that thoroughly enjoyed the first day out following the planned route, in fact we added some extra twists and turns onto our route plan in the "Clockwise Group". However, the next day many wanted to explore elsewhere, some had friends in the area they wished to visit, some wanted to find a nice route that gave them lunch options etc. A few members decided to ride the outlined route…guess what, all were very happy members at the end of the day.

So, what is the SCMA playbook, well simply put; the SCMA (Southern California Motorcycling Association) runs a ride called the "3 Flags Classic". It is a ride that extends from Mexico through the USA to Canada, some years it is the other way around. They create a route plan, however if you may have happened to run those roads before, there is no rule that says you cannot take another route as long as you make the checkpoints. Everyone knows the destinations, just get there, anyway you wish!

Trying to force members to follow the planned route because that's what we, "the District Wants"… Well that is just treating everyone like children. District NWC membership is not like the Military, we do not need to follow orders, what we need is to be flexible and allow members to make choices like adults. By doing this we get more participation, greater appeal to a larger group of potential members, and we get more couples wanting to come along for a ride.

Please do not get me wrong…this is not a criticism of any work that has been done by our ride coordinator or the other volunteers. I still want to see planned riding routes like the Gypsy Run and the latest incantation, the Rock-Hard Buns Ride. I am suggesting a new page in our playbook with membership flexibility when planning future rides and not forcing people, or "chiding them" into "following the planned route". What I want to see is riders "spread out on the road and stay together for the journey".

Another fascinating fun fact…everyone had different stories to tell about the different rides, destinations in between and areas they explored and the "End of the Day Social". We all did something different and it was interesting. People were happy, no discourse because they got to do what they wanted and that riding & socializing was facilitated by our GWRRA District. What better way for people to recruit than be happy and describe their experiences to potential new members.

The GWRRA District NWC is not a "long distance riding club, however, we have many members that want that. If you wish to run a route plan that is 1200 kms in a day…that’s great, we support that, however many of us want other choices. The more choices we have the more enjoyment, the more members we can recruit.

If you want to ride hard and fast, we support that. Just be mindful, memories of that curve taken at 90 miles per hour will soon fade into all the rest, however, the memory of having that special social event with friends during a ride put on by District NWC will last a life time. A District Ride should encompass the needs of the many – The needs of the few can stay at the chapter level or a personal level.

Just something to consider.

Until I see you all again, Be safe, Ride safe. Kevin Bramhoff - GWRRA Chapter BC-C – District Director D-NWC

As a follow up to the June ’20 article we would like to share the following information:

The part numbers are now available for those members who would like to update their built in GPS systems… Please note, the part numbers are different for each of the different groups of years, as outlined below, and only Canadian cards will work on Canadian serial numbered bikes.

For 2006-2008 Goldwings, the Honda Canada part number is 39250-MCA-382. Cost is approximately $500 CDN. You get 2 cards, 1 for Canada and 1 for the US. Due to memory size limits this is the final update.

For 2009-2010 Goldwings, the Honda Canada part number is 39250-MCA-L23. List price is $491.17 CDN.

For 2011 Goldwings, nothing is listed.

For 2012-2017 Goldwings, two part numbers are listed. The first one is 39250-MJK-961 at $290.85 CDN. I have been told this is the Canadian card, but nobody I know has ever seen one so if you are ordering it, please specify it as Canadian, and let us know so we can update this information for the Club as needed. The second card has as the Honda Canada part number 39260-MCA-S82. Cost is approximately $224. I assume this is the US card, until someone can verify.

Nobody at the Honda Canada Help Desk, and most of the dealers, are not aware of these details, and do not know much about the subject. If you want to place an order, I would suggest you contact Chris at Carter Honda in Vancouver. He can be reached at 604-736-8708. So far I have found him the most knowledgeable.

If you can update, or confirm anything else, please let me know and we will get this article updated. You can reach me at 604-984-2953.

I am no longer lost ☺
