From the PrincipalDear Parents and Guardians,

New building program closerI am very happy and excited to say that we are getting very close to announcing details of our Stage 1 Master Plan implementation.

As you are aware, Galen completed a new Master Plan that projects our building developments over the next 10 – 15 years. Stage 1 of the plan provides a completely new Senior School complex, and a completely new Junior School complex.

We are on target for building works to start on this project early in 2016. There are still steps for us to complete before the project goes out to tender later this year. However, we are well advanced with our plans and designs for the what promises to be the biggest building program since Galen was established.

The first of the new complexes is scheduled to be in place for the start of the 2017 year.

We will continue to keep all parents informed as we complete each of the major steps over the coming months.

Oxygen Factory – parent night successI was very disappointed not to be able to attend the Oxygen Factory parent night last week. Over 200 parents attended the night to hear guest speaker, Glen Gerreyn, address a range of issues around addiction of all sorts and decision making for adolescents. Reports back from staff and parents have been hugely positive.

Diocesan Winter Sleep OutGalen is hosting the Sandhurst Diocesan Winter Sleep Out this Thursday night. This is an important event for us as a Catholic school in which young people from all over the diocese – from Bendigo and Echuca in the west, to Myrtleford and Wodonga in the east – will join with Galen staff and students in a gesture of solidarity for the homeless in our region. As Jesus said, “Whenever you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:40).

Recent surveysI would like to thank all those parents who have participated in a number of recent surveys from Galen. There have been three such surveys in the past few months, all of them designed to provide information to help Galen on its path of continuous improvement.

The three surveys have been:• Enhancing Catholic School Identity survey – designed to help our school to continue to develop its Catholic Identity and mission;• InsightSRC surveys – designed to help the school identify its relative strengths and areas of challenge: this is a major tool for the development of our School Improvement (Strategic) Plan and our Annual Action Plan;• Principal’s Appraisal survey – designed to provide feedback on the performance of the Principal.

Year 8 Reader’s CupThis morning the Year 8 homerooms presented their book trailers as they vied to win the 2015 Reader’s Cup last Wednesday. And what a wonderful morning was enjoyed by all of the Junior School. The students chose a mixture of books from classics to current popular fiction. A lot of effort went into producing original works which was most appreciated by the audience. The three panelists, Mr Mason, Mr Spencer and Mrs Chuck, had their work cut out for them in deciding on the eventual winner. A wonderful adaption of Cinderella won the hearts of the crowd and the judges. Pictured below are the happy faces of the 8/4 winners with their proud homeroom teacher Ms Webster.

Who said kids don’t have an imagination these days?

While Ms Timms was recently doing her yard duty on a rainy day, she saw a group of boys laughing among themselves, standing beside a big puddle with sticks in their hands.

“Can’t be up to much good,” she thought… “But they’re good kids,” she pondered.

Feeling confused, she asked them, “What are you doing with the sticks?”

“We’re fishing Ms Timms!”

A now enlightened Timmsy thought to herself, “Of course! Why didn’t I see that!”

Galen students and parents become informedabout addiction issues

On Tuesday 28th July motivational speaker Glen Gerreyn visited Galen Catholic College to deliver his student and parent workshops. Glenn Gerreyn has to date spoken at over 500 schools around the world. He’s the author of four books, including the children’s book ‘Gifted for Greatness’. Glenn delivered a workshop on adolescent issues such as addiction and peer pressure to the entire Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 cohorts. Students were provided with a support booklet and key strategies to combat adolescent issues. Students also actively participated in the questions forum.Almost 250 parents attended Glen’s Positive Parent workshop in the Galen College Auditorium. Glen provided Galen College parents five fundamental positive parenting tools. Parents left the workshop feeling equipped with the skills to better connect with their children and to empower them to tackle a complex world. We were very fortunate to have had Glen Gerreyn visit the Galen College school community. A big thank you to the generous Galen Parents Association who funded the costs involved with bringing Glen to our school.

VCAL NewsYear 11 VCAL students have been working with their teacher Mr Mal Vickery and Michelle Bear from Rural City of Wangarat-ta (RCOW) to construct Bat Boxes. Through assistance from RCOW in supplying the materials, students have enjoyed the opportunity to use their skills to work on a real project.Once the boxes have all been constructed, RCOW will be putting them up around the river flat areas surrounding Wangaratta. It is hoped that the boxes will give the bats a safe place to roost so that they’re protected from other predators.
