CLIENT TESTIMONIALHEARD THE GOOD NEWS?“I am so overjoyed with the improvement in my life. I first noticed I was having difficulty hearing when there was more than one person talking. It wasn’t always clear and I kept asking them to repeat themselves.

Life is a lot easier now that I have my new digital hearing aids. The TV does not have to be so loud and I can hear everybody clearly even when they speak softly. I’m so much more confident socialising with friends.

The best part is my hearing aids are so small most people don’t know I’m wearing them.”

Frances – Carrara, QLD

The recent rapid advancement in hearing aid technology has resulted in hundreds of Gold Coast residents being fitted every week with state of the art digital hearing aids. The development of fully automatic settings now means that users can insert the device and forget about it. Optimum comfort is ensured as each aid is uniquely manufactured to match an impression taken of your ear.

A1 Discreet Hearing Aids specialise in the latest technology and provide a full range of in-the-ear and behind-the-ear hearing instruments, catering to all needs.

Three members ofthe crew - JohnSummerhayes (mid up-per-gunner), Fred Roach(tail gunner) and WilburBentz (pilot) were still attheir stations when theaircraft was excavatedfrom a swamp inSchendelbeke in 1997.They were buried with fullmilitary honours along-side the five other mem-bers of the crew atGeraardsbergen. One of the key reasons forthe Memorial being lo-cated in the heart of Lon-don is that the city owesits comparative safetyfrom aerial bombardmentduring World War II toRAF Bomber Command.Their continued offen-

The location isclose to Buckingham Pal-ace, where the Royal Fam-ily remained during WorldWar Two, and Whitehall,at the heart of govern-ment then as now.The Australian Govern-ment is sending a com-memorative mission ofeight Australian BomberCommand veterans to theBomber Command Memo-rial dedication and hasoffered a $3000 grant toother veterans who wishto attend, but many feelthat this is not enough. The veteran airmen are allaround 90 years of ageand would find such a tripdaunting without fullsupport.

AUSTRALIA’S population is ageing rapidly. By 2044–45 almost one in four Australians will be aged 65 yearsor older and this will have a significant implication forAustralia’s economy with the need to encouragepeople to stay at work for as long as they are able andwilling. The Australian Law Reform Commission hasbeen asked to look at a range of laws, including su-perannuation law; family assistance, child supportand social security law; employment law; insurancelaw; compensation laws; and any other relevant Com-monwealth legislation exempt under the Age Discrimi-nation Act 2004 (Cth). For the purposes of this In-quiry mature age is defined as being over 45 years.ALRC President Professor Rosalind Croucher said“There is often a complex interaction between thingsthat are ‘barriers’ to workforce participation and thingsthat are ‘incentives’ to leave the workforce. Leavingthe paid workforce may also mean people are able tomake a valuable contribution in other productivework—like the hugely important role of volunteers inour community. The ALRC considers that six interlinking principlesshould guide reform in this area: participation; inde-pendence; self-agency; system stability; system co-herence; and fairness. One key question we are ask-ing in the Issues Paper is whether there are any otherprinciples that should inform our deliberations. Otherquestions refer to changes that should be made toremove barriers in the various areas of law under re-view.”This Issues Paper forms a basis for consultation. It is

THE Lions Club of Coolangatta and Tweed Headswas the 7th Lions Club formed in Australia and cel-ebrates its’ 60th Anniversary in December 2012.Three of its Members have been Lions DistrictGovernor’s and the club hosted the first AustralianLions Convention on 8 April 1953.The Ladies Auxiliary was formed in 1957 and theywere a strong force in raising money and assistingthe Club. In 1988 ladies were admitted to the Club asLions and, sadly, since then the numbers of the Aux-iliary have dwindled.Besides assisting other volunteer organisations, schools, The Tweed Hospital and individual peoplein the local community over the 60 years, the Clubhas been involved in major projects, a few of whichare: The Club raised the money and built the TwinTowns Kindy and it was opened on 14 March 1962.In 1969 they instigated a meeting between Gold CoastCity Council and Tweed Shire Council where the twoCouncils decided to build a Memorial. The Membersdesigned the Captain Cook Memorial Lighthouse andinstalled the drinking fountain. From 29 March 1972 until 19 February 1977 the Clubraised $400,000 to build the Coolangatta Senior Citi-zens Centre. Designed by one of the Club’s Lionsand built by another, the Centre was formally declaredopen on 29 June 1977 at a cost of $398,450.85 and washanded over free and clear to the Gold Coast CityCouncil. In the 80’s one of their Members had a dream aboutthe Tweed Heads Court House so instead of it beingdemolished he saw it as a Museum. They purchasedthe land in Kennedy Drive, raised the money, and

Age Barriers to Workintended to encourage informed community partici-pation in the Inquiry by providing background infor-mation and highlighting the issues so far identifiedby the ALRC. The ALRC invited individuals andorganisations to make submissions in response tothe questions contained in the Issues Paper, or toany of the background material and analysis provided. This community input will help inform the develop-ment of draft recommendations for reform to be re-leased in a Discussion Paper later in the year.Part-time Commissioner for the Inquiry, the Hon Su-san Ryan AO, stated “A socially inclusive society isone in which everyone is valued and has the oppor-tunity to participate fully in the life of our society, including participation in paid work where that is theperson’s choice. To achieve such a society we must identify and re-move the barriers to such participation, whether theybe in our laws, or in the legal frameworks or proce-dures that surround those laws. We want people tobe able to make their own decisions about mattersaffecting them. Self-agency is fundamentally impor-tant in underpinning independence and participation. We want to ensure that the legal system supportsthem in their decisions.”The Issues Paper may be downloaded from the ALRCwebsite, www.alrc.gov.au.For more information about the ALRC’s inquiry andto subscribe to the Age Barriers to Work e-newsletterplease go to www.alrc.gov.au/inquiries/age-barriers-work.

IMAGINE having accessto your personal healthinformation, wheneveryou need it. Imagine all ofyour healthcare team hav- VISITORS to Gold Coast Botanic Gardens can now

recycle away from home just as easily as they can athome thanks to the new recycling bins recently in-stalled throughout the gardens.Funded by the Gold Coast City Council and the Pack-aging Stewardship Forum (PSF) of the AustralianFood and Grocery Council, 14 new dual waste andrecycling bins carrying the national call to action, DoThe Right Thing, Use The Right Bin, have been in-stalled for use throughout the gardens. The new bins will provide away from home recyclingopportunities to more than 200,000 visitors to theBotanic Gardens each year and divert up to 15 tonnesof recyclables from landfill annually – equivalent tomore than 600,000 small plastic drink bottles! Council’s Community and Cultural DevelopmentCommittee Chair, Councillor Bob La Castra, said:“This is a great initiative which will assist in deliver-ing Council’s waste management strategy to reducewaste to landfill and also reduce littering of our parksand gardens “There is a growing expectation from the communityfor ‘away from home recycling’ facilities and the newwaste and recycling bin stations at the Botanic Gar-dens are helping to make that expectation a reality.” Cr La Castra said a strong, ongoing partnership be-tween the PSF and the Council had provided fundingfor the program. General Manager of the Canberra-based PSF, JennyPickles, said that the initiative was an important stepfor recycling in Queensland and demonstrated a com-mitment by the beverage industry to increase bever-age container recycling rates. “Through well-placed bin infrastructure and promo-tion of the Do the Right Thing, Use the Right Binmessage, the new recycling bins will make it just aseasy for people to recycle away from home as it is athome.”

What is eHealth?ing, with your permission, access to your health in-formation when theyneed it. Technology ispart of daily life for most

people. Whether you areat the checkout buyinggroceries using a card in-stead of cash, sending anemail instead of posting a

letter, or paying your billsonline instead of bycheque, the best uses oftechnology improve thequality and safety of theservice, and might savetime and money. In theAustralian healthcaresystem, people of all agesinteract with technologywhen they visit their doc-tor, get a blood test or ascan, go to their chemistto fill a prescription, orspend time in hospital. While our healthcaresystem is among the bestin the world, some of ourways of collecting andsharing health informa-tion—such as medica-tions, test results, scans,or hospital discharge re-ports—can be improved. Many clinical communi-cations, such as referralsand prescriptions, are stillcompleted on paper. eHealth aims to intro-duce electronic servicesto improve upon somepaper-based systems.

With the right protectionsin place, the electronicmanagement of yourhealth information has thepotential to transform theway we do things now,by improving the qualityand safety of ourhealthcare system. From July 2012, all Aus-tralians can choose toregister for an electronichealth record. The newlylaunched ‘Learning Cen-tre’ (atehealthinfo.gov.au) willhelp you find out aboutthe benefits of an eHealthrecord, how to get in-volved and how to use theeHealth record system. This learning centre willhelp you find out aboutthe benefits of an eHealthrecord, how to get in-volved, and how to usethe eHealth record sys-tem. The learning centreis planned to grow andmany more modules willbe available over the nextfew months.

“The ageing populationmeans there will be morepeople faced with theslow decline of physicaland mental function. This issue will onlybecome bigger in yearsto come.” The report found thatwhilst greater patientengagement is partlydriven by governmentstrying to keep healthsystems financiallyviable, patients and theirfamilies can also seebenefits. “There were severalcases of people living

with serious andcontinuing illness andoften managing success-fully against the odds. “In many cases withpatients and theirdoctors, patients don’thave the knowledge orunderstanding of basicthings like theirmedication. The patientis seen as a passiverecipient, not an activeagent. This is somethingthat can be improved.”The authors of the studyfrom the Menzies Centrefor Health Policy at theUniversity of Sydney,

James Gillespie andJustin McNab, and theircolleagues in the Seriousand Continuing IllnessPolicy and PracticeStudy (SCIPPS)conducted research andinterviews with olderAustralians aged 65-85from western Sydneyand the AustralianCapital Territory. Theresearchers founduncertainty was themost challenging aspectof chronic illness, leading to fear andanxiety amongstpatients.

O’Neill said the reporthighlighted importantareas for policy reformas well asrecommendations ofmanaging thesediseases in alternativeways. “With the rise of theburden of chronicillness in Australia andcomparable countries, health systems need toadapt and socialsupport becomescritical,’’ he said. “It makes sense forgovernments trying tokeep health systems

financially viable, andfor patients and carerswanting more controlover their lives andhealth.” Health literacy inAustralia is atalarmingly low levels.According to a recentsurvey by the ABS,almost 60 per cent ofpeople lacked theknowledge and skills toenable an individual tofunction at a minimallevel.Go to www.productiveageing.com.au for thefull report.

DIETITIANS Association of Australia has calledfor routine nutrition screening and interventionprograms for the elderly.New research has found that one-third of olderAustralians receiving home care are at risk of beingmalnourished. The Melbourne-based studyconducted by the Dietitians Association ofAustralia (DAA) also found 8 per cent of all peopleassessed were malnourished, while one in five wereunderweight.Dietitian Georgie Rist, who led the study, said olderAustralians were struggling to afford healthy food.“There have been a lot of reports lately saying thatit is extremely difficult to live adequately, even onthe pension,” Rist said.Being malnourished increased the chances of anearly admission to hospital and residential agedcare, she said. “If we can address malnutrition inthe community, we can also decrease the burden onthe healthcare system.” The DAA is calling forstate and federal governments to fund routinenutrition screening and intervention programs forthe elderly.Rist said federal funds were needed, particularlygiven the Gillard government’s recent push toencourage older Australians to seek care at home –through its Living Longer Living Better program. The Federal Government has said it will invest $3.7billion over the next five years to increase in-homecare options and attract more workers to the sector. The malnutrition study assessed 235 people aged65 years and older, over a three-month period. The majority were on a pension, with an annualincome of less than $30,000, and lived at home.Previous Australian research has found more thanone in three hospitals patients and up to 70 percent of residents in aged care facilities are malnour-ished.Courtesy: AAP

& LeisureHOLIDAYWANT a cheap holidayin an overseas country orin another part of Austra-lia?How about a holiday withfree accommodation andfree use of a car? Theseare just two of the advan-tages when you partici-pate in a home exchange.Having recently com-pleted our seventh ex-change, we have beenasked by many peoplehow to go about it andwhat it entails. It all revolves around

Consider a Home Exchange

intended for the oldermembers of society:w w w . s e n i o r s h o m eexchange.com.Which one you choosedepends on a number offactors. If you know what specificcountry you want to visit, you can go to a websiteand check out how manylistings they have for thatcountry – the numbervaries considerably be-tween sites.Anybody can visit a siteand look at the offeringswithout being a member. You only have to sub-scribe to a site when youwant to contact a prospec-tive swapper. The information providedwithin sites varies too. They usually tell you howbig the property is, whatits facilities are, and some-thing about the peopleincluding their agebracket. We will only swap withour own age group andwill not accept children orsmokers – those kinds ofchoices are up to you. Thecost of membership var-ies widely. Some sites cost over $100a year, but others costonly around $60 a yearwith some offering dis-counts for a three yearmembership. There is often a guaran-tee – if you don’t manage

to organize a swap in theyear, then you get anotheryear for free. With thegrowing popularity of thiskind of holiday, the com-petition is increasing and, anyway, you recoup thecost in the first day or soof a swap.Once you have signed upwith a particular site, youhave to list your property. It is most beneficial if youprovide as much informa-tion as possible and makeit sound fantastic. You have to sell the ideaof a holiday in yourhouse. Photos are essen-tial, not just of the houseand interior, but also ofthe attractions in yourarea. Try to be as chattyas possible, and try to befriendly in how youpresent information aboutyourself. Now you can start send-ing emails to possibleswappers. Most listingsstate where the peoplewant to go. We ignorethis and send emails toanybody in the chosenarea – often 50 or more. One problem you mayencounter is that Europe-ans are reluctant to travelall the way to Australia –you would think it was onanother planet! So youhave to make it sound andlook really good. Keep arecord of who you con-tact as you may need this

later if you send out moreemails.Once you get a possiblehit, you then start negoti-ating on dates and spe-cifics like looking afterpets. Over a period ofmonths you get to knowthe person and may evenbe able to talk to them onSkype. You build up a rapportand get a feel of what theyare like. If there is any-thing you are not sure of,it is best to bring it out inthe open and discuss itrather than leave it tochance. Sometimes, dueto travel arrangements, you may not meet thepeople whose house youlive in. We have alwaysmanaged to meet themand it is good to talk faceto face. It is great to havesome local contacts, es-pecially in a foreign coun-try. So try to arrangesome friends orneighbours to visit and beon call if problems arise. We have developed a“house manual” detailingevery aspect of how ourproperty works. This ismost beneficial whensmall issues come up. Itis surprising how ourhouses differ from thoseoverseas – small thingslike where is the mainselectrical switch, who tocall in an emergency, howto operate the TV andwhat kind of fuel the caruses.Check with your insurersabout others driving yourcar and living in yourhouse – most do not carewho it is as long as theyare over 25. You can lockup any belongings youwant secured. Somepeople even put locks onone room. The wholeswap is based on trustand we have never hadany problems. So the whole world is outthere, just waiting to beexplored. What are you waiting for?Get on the computer andgo for it!

AFTER a bout of wet weather mould will start to ap-pear. There are other things than expensive productsthat you can use.Vinegar is a mild acid which can kill 82% of mouldspecies. However it also has the advantages of beingnatural and safe. Vinegar is non-toxic and doesn’tgive off dangerous fumes like bleach does.To kill mould with vinegar, use white distilled vinegarwhich you can buy cheaply from the supermarket.Pour some vinegar into a spray bottle without water-ing it down and spray the vinegar onto the mouldysurface and leave it to sit for an hour.Wipe clean the area with water and allow the surfaceto dry. Any smell from the vinegar should clear withina few hours. If you want to use vinegar to prevent mould growingon surfaces just spray vinegar on the surface andleave it. Repeat this every few days to ensure thesurface will stay mould-free. You can even mop yourtiled bathroom floor or other hard non-porous floorswith vinegar if you are worried about mould growingon them.

One of our readers will soon behaving a good chuckle over theyarns in John Gilfoyle’s latest book,“You’d Better Bloody Believe It!”Congratulations go to NonaBeachley of Nerang who enteredlast month’s competition and is thewinner of a copy of the book.It is a collection of stories, yarnsand poems from John ‘Gilly’Gilfoyle and John ‘Robbo’ Robbinsplus stories from others they havemet over the last 50 years – storiesof real Aussie characters and theyare all true - well mostly so!

FAME the Musical, directed by AnnieLoctoki, may be a well known movieand TV series about the gritty side ofthe theatre but it is actually full of ro-mantic stories including a real life ro-mance which blossomed on the stage. The show, being presented by theTweed Theatre Company (TTC), has sixmain characters who all begin as fresh-man at the Performing Arts School inNew York. The story weaves 3 love sto-ries around these characters while inreal life the TTC cast has its own lovestory.

Introducing ‘Central Park String Quartet’

the Central Park StringQuartet. The group hashad several namechanges since beingfounded in the mid-1980s by Ilse togetherwith the late RonHawkins, a highly-respected violinist of histime. Ron passed awayin 2007 at age 86.Ilse, originally fromGermany and Lyn, afourth generation GoldCoaster, first met anumber of years ago asplayers in the GoldCoast PhilharmonicOrchestra. NewZealander Margaret

joined the GCPO later, asdid Isabel who came outfrom England in 2005.Ilse and Isabel remainactive players in theorchestra, with Lynjoining in on cello forthe upcoming concert. The Central Park StringQuartet prefers to playclassical music, with thefour musicians agreeingthat “it stretches you abit”, though they allsmile when Isabel says“we never take our-selves too seriously.”Ilse’s early life inGermany was spentworking as a teacher andplaying the violin inorchestras. She firststarted learning theinstrument at age 12.Besides music, Ilseenjoys horse-riding,sailing and travellingwith her talentedmusician husband,multi-instrumentalistLothar Schildhorst.Margaret first startedplaying the violin at 10,being banished to thewashhouse to practice.Eventually, however, thewashhouse blues turnedinto a place on theschool orchestra and aviolin scholarship, withMargaret then becominga founding member ofthe Auckland JuniorSymphony Orchestra.Being a physiotherapistand having five childrenput music on hold for anumber of years but it isnow a part of Margaret’slife again. Before arriving inAustralia, Isabel hadregular viola positions

with the ScottishNational Orchestra andThe BBC ConcertOrchestra. Freelancework included a run ofBernstein’s Candide inLondon’s West End;many concerts withOrquesta Sinfónica deMálaga, and playing inan ensemble specialisingin contemporarychamber music.Lyn’s quiet dry humourcomes through whenshe explains that her“orchestra debut was inSydney many years agoat Taronga Park Zoo,near the elephantenclosure. I trust theystill remember theoccasion.” Lyn joinedthe Gold Coast Philhar-monic in 1985, discover-ing “lots about orches-tral management, andmuch joy in playingmusic at the ‘deep end’on cello or bass.”Take a bow, Central ParkString Quartet, continu-ously playing since themid-1980s with thanksto Ilse Schildhorst, andstill using Ron Hawkins’music.Pictured (l-r standing)are Margaret King, IlseSchildhorst and IsabelSmith, with Lyn Ander-son seated in front.
