Cirrus Aircraft deliveries in 2013 drive strongest performance since 2008

Cirrus Aircraft delivered 276 new aircraft in 2013, nearly a 10% increase over 2012, marking its best aircraft shipment perform-ance since 2008. With these results, Cirrus Aircraft’s annual market share has grown to an all-time high of 37%. “The key driver to this past year’s outstanding performance was Cirrus owners’ and pilots’ strong re-sponse to Generation 5 – which was intro-duced in early 2013 with the new capability to carry 200 lbs more than any previous Cir-rus airplane,” said Todd Simmons, Executive Vice President Sales, Marketing and Cus-tomer Support at Cirrus Aircraft. A highlight for Cirrus Aircraft in 2013 was final delivery in Saudi Arabia of more than 20 new Cirrus aircraft to the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) for its pilot training needs.

Although both Etihad and Emirates fly to Brazil, there are at present no direct connections between the UAE and the booming Pacific Alliance bloc of Mexico, Chile, Peru and Colombia. Investment by UAE companies in the bloc has reached $7bn, making it the most attractive investment destination in Latin America, according to Abu Dhabi’s The National.

In the near future, further investments worth $70bn are expected. It is esti-mated that direct flights between the UAE and the alliance countries could increase existing levels of trade by over AED2.4bn ($653m) per year.

When it first entered service, the A340 opened true long-haul operations, expanding the Airbus wide-body family. The A330 and A340 have since become the best-selling wide-body family of all time.In an ever-changing world some flag carriers like to keep their fleet age very low, it’s natural that a proportion of their aircraft will move to the used aircraft market, the A340 is no exception. The A340 Family of three variants, the A340-300, -500 and -600, is now available at very competitive lease rates which makes them economically affordable prospects for carriers looking at long-haul opportunities, especially as they await delivery of new-generation aircraft, such as the A350 XWB.

A340 appeal The A340 appeal is based on its availability, commonality with other Airbus types, its performance as well as its excellent payload accommodation. Now that older B747-400s are well into their retirement phase, the availability of significantly younger A340-600s equipped with modern avionics, make them the smart interim upgrade. The four-engined A340 is not subject to “Extended-range Twin-engine Operations” (ETOPS). Operators can fly the most direct routes and operate efficiently from ‘hot and high’ airports, potentially off-limits to other aircraft. Furthermore, the A340 fits seamlessly alongside other Airbus aircraft, especially the twin-engined A330, with which it shares the same modern technology, such as the cockpit, fly-by-wire architecture and systems. The A340 cabin can comfortably accommodate from 280 to 440 passengers depending on the model. Most A340s available in the market today are fitted with full Audio-Video-On-Demand (AVOD) IFE system in all classes, which is today’s standard. Moreover, when it comes to making the most of cargo revenue opportunities, the A340 can carry as much cargo as direct competitors if not more, with 18 to 25 tonnes of revenue earning cargo capacity.

The bottom lineSo, has the A340 performed as intended by its designers? The answer is definitely ‘yes’ because today’s A340 is a mature product delivering high reliability. With its very competitive ownership costs, its passenger and cargo revenues, its availability and its comfortable cabin, the A340 can be considered an efficient long-haul solution in today’s market.

Boeing to locate new 777X compos-ite wing center in Everett, Wash.

Boeing announced the selection of its Ev-erett, Wash., site as the location for a new composite wing center for the 777X pro-gram. Boeing evaluated criteria that were designed to find the wing fabrication loca-tion that would best support the 777X busi-ness plan. The new composite wing center will be located north of the Everett factory and will sustain thousands of Puget Sound area jobs for years to come. Boeing select-ed the Everett site for 777X final assembly following the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers (IAM) Dis-trict 751 approval of an eight-year contract extension earlier this year. As part of the contract extension, the company agreed to fabricate the parts for, and assemble, the 777X composite wings in the Puget Sound region. Safran delivers strong operational performance in full-year 2013

Safran reported that new order intake during 2013 was €20.8bn, providing evidence of robust and resilient demand. The backlog grew to €56.2bn compared to €48.5bn last year. It does not include future flows from CFM56 spares and services provided on a “time and materials” basis which will provide significant high-margin revenue streams in future

decades. Approximately €0.8bn of orders in the backlog relate to joint arrangements which will not con-tribute to Safran’s revenue under IFRS 11. Thus, the backlog indica-tive of Safran’s future revenue was €55.4bn at December 31, 2013. For full-year 2013, Safran’s rev-enue was €14,695m, a 8.4% year-on-year increase (8.2% organic growth), compared to €13,560m in 2012. Full-year 2013 revenue in-creased by €1,135m on a reported

basis, notably highlighting performance in the Group’s aerospace businesses. On an or-ganic basis, revenue increased by €1,118m with higher aerospace original equipment (OEM) volumes, strong civil aftermarket trends, stability in the security business and resil-ience in the defence activities (avionics).

Thales releases 2013 annual results

Thales released that new orders for the Aer-ospace segment amounted to €4,130m in 2013, compared to €4,051m in 2012. Exclud-ing the impact due to the disposal of activi-ties in 2012 (civil fixed-wing aircraft simula-tion and Diehl Aircabin), Avionics order intake remained generally stable, as the continued growth of on-board avionics activities, both original equipment and support, and helicop-ter avionics compensated lower orders in in-flight entertainment and tubes & imaging busi-nesses (after the high level witnessed in 2012). Aerospace sales amounted to €4,451m, a 1% increase compared to 2012 (+6% at constant exchange rates and scope). Avionics activities continued their strong progression, driven by flight avionics systems (Airbus, Bombardier), in-flight entertainment and military simulation

MTU Aero Engines’ revenues reach all-time high in 2013

MTU Aero Engines AG built on the record year of 2012 with its business figures for 2013: MTU improved its all-time high in revenues to €3,741.7m (2012: €3,378.6m), and is thus fully in line with its revenue forecast of around €3.7bn. Earnings matched the record level of 2012: At €377.3m, operating profit clearly met its target of around €375m (2012: €375.2m). The return on sales amounted to 10.1% compared with 11.1% in 2012. At €232.1m, MTU generated earnings after tax of around €235.0m as planned (2012: €234.0m). The growth in group revenues in 2013 is primarily due to strong growth in the commercial engine business, where revenues increased by 18% from €1,603.1m in 2012 to €1,891.3m. The growth drivers were the V2500 for the Airbus A320 family, the GP7000 engine that powers the Airbus A380 and the GEnx engine for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Boeing 747-8. At €500.7m, revenues in the military engine business matched last year‘s level (2012: €503.3m), with the key revenue driver being the EJ200 Eurofighter engine. Revenues in the commercial main-tenance business rose by 6% to €1,381.8m (2012: €1,305.7m). The key revenue driver in this case was the V2500. MTU’s order backlog of €10,745.5m (2012: €11,479.6m) equates to a production workload of around three years.

activities (A400M). The Aerospace sector’s EBIT2 continues to grow and reached €370m (8.3% of sales) compared to €297m (6.7% of sales) in 2012. In Avionics, the marked growth in results, boosted by civil avionics activities and in-flight entertainment, is due to a fa-vourable volume impact and improved project execution.

Macquarie reports fourth quarter and full-year 2013 financial results

Macquarie Infrastructure Company report-ed its financial results for 2013 including a 12.2% and 25.4% increase in propor-tionately combined Free Cash Flow for the fourth quarter and full year, respectively. The increases reflect better than anticipated re-sults at MICs Atlantic Aviation business, par-tially offset by higher operating expenses and maintenance capital expenditures at Interna-tional-Matex Tank Terminals. Proportionately combined Free Cash Flow per share for the full-year 2013 increased 11.7% compared with the full-year 2012, excluding swap break fees incurred at Hawaii Gas in 2012. Per share figures for the full year include the impact of a 10.2% increase in the number of the Companys weighted average shares out-standing at year-end. MIC issued 8.8m ad-ditional shares during 2013 including shares sold in follow on offerings in May and De-cember. The sales increased MICs weighted average number of shares outstanding at year end by 4.7m versus year end 2012. The

proceeds of the sales were used primarily to reduce the indebtedness of and facilitate ac-quisitions by the Company’s Atlantic Aviation business. On February 14, 2014, MICs Atlan-tic Aviation business signed an agreement to acquire certain of the assets of a Fixed Base Operation (FBO) at Boca Raton Airport in Boca Raton, Florida from Boca Aviation for $35.0m. The acquisition is expected to generate annualized adjusted EBITDA of ap-proximately $3.2m. The Company expects to fund the acquisition using a combination of cash on hand and drawings on the recently upsized term loan facility at Atlantic Aviation. The transaction is expected to close at the end of the first quarter of 2014, subject to the receipt of consent from the Boca Raton Airport Authority and satisfaction of other closing conditions typically associated with a transaction of this size and type.
