urning pro is ev-ery high school athlete’s dream. The thought of playing for money

letes to play at their school. It’s a shame when adults get in the way of our children’s own spotlight luring them away with simple dollars that can and will not secure them finan-cially for the rest of their lives. Here in the Rio Grande Valley, we have families who are faced with these-temptations of trading their own children’s fame for money. Most of the time, out of desperation. HSSM had the pleasure of inter-viewing one junior athlete with just about all the talent a child could possess at the tender age of 17. A few months later, his team would win the State 4A Soccer title. Seventeen...for parents like myself, we are faced with our own children’s desire to drive. Another dangerous sport. A sport which requires pro-fessional skills too. But still, these 17-year-old teens feel old enough to make their own decisions. Soon, our children want a professional job so that they can drive around to nowhere. Then comes the staying out late and breaking curfews. In the end, we all lose focus on what’s

94% of its students every year. For Jesus Mireles, a star junior soccer player from Hidalgo, he might never get his real chance to graduate from high school. He went pro for about $1000 a game. He got recruited...and professionally too. When HSSM interviewed Mireles in Volume 5 Issue 2, he wanted to go to college and play soccer and someday play professional soccer. But first, he wanted a chance to win a state title in 2009. That he did. A student athlete who completes at the high school and college level is considered an “amateur”. When an “amateur” accepts money to play sports at any age (17), they give up their amateur status. Now, according to his professional soccer coach, he was quoted saying “he’s having a tough time adjust-ing.” This organization also was quoted saying that they will “make sure that he does complete his ed-ucation, even if it means getting a G.E.D.” I guess this deserves some kind of Bravo! Bravo!

Qualifies for State Meet. Rio Grande City H.S. Fresh-men Alex Garza placed second in the shot put event at the Class 5A Region IV Championships held in San Antonio, Texas with a toss of 61’ 4 1/2”. (HSSM IMages)

(McAllen, Texas)-The Rio Grande Valley will have to travel to the University Interscholastic League’s (UIL) 2009 State Track and Field Championships without representatives from 32-3A, 32-2A, and 32-1A. In-stead, fans will be entertained with a much anticipat-ed State 5A Discus showdown between the state’s top two throwers, Rio Grande City’s Stephen Saenz and Houston Humble’s Matt Kosecki. Saenz challenged the UCLA-signee last year but had to settle for a bronze medal with a throw of 180’01” while Kosecki won with a throw of 193’09”. “I really want to win this title,” says Auburn-signee, Stephen Saenz. “To win both the shot put and discus would be awesome,” he adds. At the Region IV-5A Championships held in San An-tonio, 2008 defending state shot put champion, Saenz easily won the shot put with a state best 72’06 1/2” throw and was left unchallenged in the discus with a winning throw of 183’ 3 1/2”. This will be Saenz’s third trip to the state meet. In 2007, the Rio Grande City senior placed second in the shot put and had to settle for fourth place in the discus. In 2008, Saenz won the state title in the shot put but finished third in the discus. Teammate, freshmen Alex Garza will also be challenging Saenz for a possible state title as he ranks second in the state with

a toss of 61’4 1/2” in the shot put event. “Alex has a chance to place in the top three,” says Saenz. “He’s a dedicated thrower.” Hopefully, both throwers will get to see their coach, Larry Howell. He suffered a severe stroke after the 30-5A championships and spent eight days in the hospital. “We are praying that he will be with us at the state meet in the stands. We dedicate our performances to Coach Howell.” says Saenz. If McAllen Memorial’s senior, Tricia Terry can over-come her chin splints-injuries, then, a possible state title could be waiting for her at the finish line in the 1600m. “I’m so frustrated with this ordeal. I’m leaving this in the hands of God and I’m working hard. It’s been frus-trating to deal with this injury.” says the TCU signee. At the Class 5A Region IV Championships, Terry finished second behind Rachel Baptista of Austin High School with a time of 5:12.75. Four seconds behind Baptista. As a freshmen, Terry placed 6th in the 3200m run and then captured a silver medal in the 1600 meter run as a sophomore. She also placed fourth in the 3200 meters. Last year, Terry finished fifth in the 3200m and brought home a silver medal in the 1600 meter run again. “I just want to win state. This is my last year,” adds Terry. From 32-4A, April Benavides and Roger Martinez both of Edcouch-Elsa will be vying for a State 4A title in the pole vault event. Natasha Masterson of Pfluger-ville Hendrickson won the Class 4A Region IV event with a 11’-0 on two attempts while Benavides needed three attempts to cross the bars. Martinez on the other hand, needed just two attempts to clear 13’6” to win the pole vault contest. He defeated Ross Bingham of Marble Falls. Other Valley state qualifiers include Mission High’s 1600 meter-relay team, who finished second at regional with a time of 3:23.05 and joining them will be team-mates Jesus Alvarez, the 4A Region IV Shot put cham-pion and Mike Reynoso in the 300-meter hurdles. Al-varez had a 57’06” toss at the regional championships. Harlingen’s Ryan McNutt won the Class 5A Region IV title in the 800m run while Luis Charles of Los Fresnos and Sergio Rios from Brownsville Pace, both qualified in the 300 meter-hurdles. Brownsville Pace will also take their own 1600 meter relay team that finished sec-ond at the Class 5A Region IV Championships.

(Rio Grande City, Texas)-Rattler track and field coach Larry Howell spent eights days dealing with a severe stroke which he says, “almost got me.” At 67 years old, Howell felt nubbness and his left side arm felt heavy right after the 30-5A district championships. He had just watched his three shot put throwers all qualify for the Class 5A Region IV championships. “It was a good one (stroke). I lost hearing on my right ear. I had about about 98% blockage,” says Howell. For three-time state shotput thrower Stephen Saenz, and teammates Geronimo Lopez, and freshmen Alex Garza, their trip to regional would have begin without Howell watching them perform. “I told these guys that nothing can shatter these boys because they believe in them-selves; they believe in me; and most importantly, they believe in God,” said the high school science teacher and educator of forty years. At regionals, Saenz quali-

fied for state with record throw in the shot put of 72’ 6 1/2” feet while Garza placed second with a toss of 61’ 4 1/2”. Lopez did not qualify. For Howell, having two throwers qualify from Rio Grande City was a blessing because according to How-ell, “we had never had a two throwers at state.” Currently, Saenz is ranked No.1 in the United States in the shotput while Garza is ranked second amongst all freshmen high school throwers. Despite his set back, Howell says that his recovery will lead him to the UIL State 5A Track and Field Champi-onships in Austin, Texas on June 5-6th. “This is what I love to do. (pauses)...I will be at the championships one way or another,” adds Howell. Saenz is the defending State 5A shot put thrower and he also qualified for the discus event as well. This marks the third trip to the state meet for the Auburn-signee.

Coyotes Season Wacked By Sharyland(Brownsville, Texas)- La Joya senior pitcher Miguel Pena told his coach Reuben Farias that he was not ready to pitch against Brownsville Hanna last Tuesday night. He also told Farias that he would need his arm strength if they were to play Shary-land in the third round of the State

5A playoffs. Farias ignored his star pitcher and put him on the mound again in the fifth inning to bail the Coyotes out of a jam to defeat Brownsville Hanna 2-0 to advance to the State 5A Region IV quarterfi-nals against Sharyland, winners over Brownsville Porter 18-0. Shary-

land head coach Barton Bickerton sent his scout team to watch Pena throughout the playoffs, and noted that he was being used alot and he also understood that Pena needed some rest too. In the end, the Rat-tlers wacked Pena on the mound for ten runs to end the Coyotes playoff

Coyotes Season Wacked By Sharylandrun, winning 10-1. The State 5A No.3 ranked Rattlers will now face No. 7 San Antonio Reagan in the regional semifinals this weekend. Updates for sites and dates can be seen at www.high-schoolsportsmagazine.net. Against Hanna, Farias walked

the field praying seven laps asking for blessings from the power above and it seemed to work but at Leo Najo Field in Mission, the Gods of Baseball had taken the day off. Farias watched his star pitcher, Miguel Pena get wacked for seven runs early on and the Coyotes could never respond after the first four innings. Starting Rattler pitcher Tucker Oakley lasted through four innings al-lowing one run and strik-ing out five batters. Pena allowed seven hits and two walks in the second inning as the Rattlers scored six runs. The Rattlers will ad-vance to the fourth round of the state playoffs for the first time in school history. Bickerton has led his team with victories over Laredo Alexander (3-1, 9-0), Porter (18-0), and La Joya (10-1) to set up their date with San Antonio Reagan. This marks the first time since 2000 that the Rattlers have advanced to the fourth round of

the playoffs. Last year, Bickerton watched his team lose to Laredo United 5-4 as the Longhorns ad-vanced to the State 5A Tourna-ment. The Rattlers previous third round appearances have been losses to Laredo Alexander 7-3, 2-0 in 2005; Harlingen South 4-2, 2006; and Laredo United 5-4, 2008. Both United and South advanced to the state tournament during those sea-sons. The Rattlers could meet Unit-ed in the regional finals should both squads win on May 30th. The Weslaco Panthers barely en-tered the playoffs in 2009 as the fourth place team and head coach Eddie Serna knew that this year his team would have to learn alot since most of his squad were underclass-man. The Panthers defeated PSJA in the Class 5A Bi-District Champion-ships in three games 2-7, 6-3, 6-1 behind the pitching of senior Dylan DeLeon. “He’s been our leader all

season long and its been a pleasure coaching him too,” adds Serna. The Panthers then face Eagle Pass, who had defeated McAllen High School in the first round 7-0, 5-3. Eagle Pass shut out the Panthers 8-0 to end the purple and white’s season. “We’ll be back next year with more experience. It’s going to be fun,” added Serna. Should Sharyland defeat Reagan this weekend

and United in the fifth round, the Valley will have sent two teams to the state tournament twice within the past three seasons. Only Harlingen South from Class 5A has advanced to the state tournament before losing in 2007 to Cypress-Fairbanks 6-1. “The Valley is working hard to get teams to the state tournaments. We have the talent in base-ball to do this too,” says Harlingen South head coach Tony Leal. “This could be our year to see another team do it.”
