Water Colors-1972-1974 by Gogi Saroj Palat Black Patriage Art Gallery’ , New Delhi
They say 'Let the history judge the work of Art'. I am curious to know , who is writing the history & who will be writing history of art & for whom ?Earlier history was written to glorify the Art portenaisers , their taste & collection . Creative visual imagery explored number of directions in the formative years of Indian contemporary art after independence, I feel, society & media was not so kind to begin with evolving number of creative directions now being practiced in Indian contemporary art scenario. Thought of compiling this book is to register the correct dates of the starting point of these creative visual directions in Contemporary Indian Art .

Gogi’s work is direct, modest and grave; an unusual combination
of qualities when one comes to examine them, because more often
one gets in the name of spontaneity, sheer whimsy, or a mess of
contrived emotions.
Her pictorial idiom is simple. But that there is a considerable
command of the language is evident from the way she handles
contrary factors: a tiny picture-space and the effect of massive
forms; the delicate medium of watercolour and the effect of dense
pigmentation, glowing hues. What is more important, this simple
Fluency of language adds up to a concentrated image. This is
something A painter achieves only when the language carries the
qulity of heart-falt intentions.
These present watercolours, made up of different series, were begun
more than two years ago. There is a series of male heads, another of
women. Both types of heads consist of similar combination of
compressed and ovoid froms and those forms are sometimes
conveyed into the landscape as well,or might appear as abstraction.
In the heads these forms develop a variety of expression. A heavy
rotund shape is a wedge into a thick-set torso is already expressive.
Then in develops a face with heavy jowls, close-set eyes, sullen
mouth. It becomes a portraitof authority- a judge in Gogi’s
imagination, sanctifying oppression. A head of girl set between
humped shoulders appears on the other hand, in ward, morose.

One could develop a to and fro narrative between the two types of
head but that would be laboring the point as the pictures are not
literal. What should however be remarked is
5
that even if one did not know, one would realize looking at the
feminine heas that this is a woman painter; and trhan the impact of
the male heads would fall into place.
This realization, that the work belons to a woman is doubly
confirmed by a third series: a figure that looks like a child, curled-
in, warding off a hostile world. An autistic child, or a normal one,
reduce to a bundle of fright by circumstance. She adopts for her
purpose, a loose, frail from and snuffs out her smouldering colours,
leaving ashen streaks on the paper and a barely articluted image.
To see her work in perspective it might be relevant to know that
Gogi understands the machinations of the social system, that she is
bold and courageous in terms of her own life. It is relevant because
it might explain why it is that though the pictures are intimate, they
are not secretive, nor sentimental; why, her very modest little
pictures have this vivid sense of confidence
