When we return from spring break, there are 49 school days remaining in the school year. I ask that you make every effort to have your student attend school each and every one of those days (as long as he or she is not ill). It’s not rocket science; it’s a simple cause and effect. I implore you to support your student’s attendance and success in school during these final 49 days (44 days for seniors). Spring also reminds us that summer is coming and it’s time to plan summer experiences that will expand students’ horizons and extend learning outside of the classroom. From interning at ScienceWorks to working on a crew for Northwest Youth Corps to taking summer classes at Yale, summer offers your teenagers a valuable opportunity to explore their interests. Current freshmen and juniors can complete their sophomore and senior projects over the summer. Current juniors can write their college essays and publish their activity resumés, reducing stress in the senior year. Thank you so much to Saudia Sharkey for coming to our Foods and Business class. Saudia, a local caterer, showed students how to make a delicious and beautifully presented roasted vegetable tray. She also taught them how to make a pesto torte. She showed students a copy of her catering contracts and discussed successful business practices. The Foods and Business class will be preparing appetizers for the “Best of the Best Art Show” at SOU on April 5 and will use information from Saudia’s presentation for this event. Special thanks go out to Karen Berman for arranging Saudia’s visit.

Once again we are thanking Daniel Greenblatt of Greenleaf. He presented four sessions at our career day in February. Daniel also came to all of our Foods 1 classes on March 19 and 20. He gave students insight into how to be a great employee, and what it takes to run a successful business.

Help AHS Theatre Students and Showcase Go to State From Mrs. Bishop and AHS Thespians

DONATE online : http://www.razoo.com/story/Ashland-High-School

Thank you for supporting AHS performing arts. We have been chosen as one of three Oregon high schools to bring our entry, the Holocaust drama, AND THEN THEY CAME FOR ME, to the Oregon State Thespian Festival in Salem, Oregon. This is truly a special

honor, but it is also a costly endeavor.

This production of this exciting and moving play involves over 40 student actors, technicians, and designers and is deemed by the showcase committee as one of the highest quality high school productions seen in the state. In our ongoing efforts to provide quality education and a semi-professional experience in the field of Theatre Arts for our students, we are finding ourselves in need now more than ever!

Because of the additional costs involved with remounting an entire show, we are seeking donations to help pay from room and board for the cast and crew of this production, as well as the transportation needs for the set and the company.

Would you help us? Your donation will help us not only to bring this moving and educational play to Salem but also to support our students who qualified for the state acting competition. This year our theater department set a new record of 32 state qualifiers and 16 company members for state showcase and all 48 students going to state.

We appreciate your consideration and support!

Sincerely,

Betsy Bishop, Director/ Producer/ teacher

AHS Theatre Playwriting Award

Isabel Enns won this meritorious award for her “excellent play submission” entitled Making Things Important.

Isabel has been invited to present her play at this year’s Play Marathon at Oregon State Thespian Festival in Salem. Her total scores from each judge were 93% and 100%!

Regularly scheduled AP exams will be held May 6 – 17 with alternate late exams being held May 22 – 24.

The 2012-13 Bulletin for AP Students and Parents has arrived. Some students are taking more than one AP class and in an effort to make sure that each student only receives one bulletin, each bulletin has been labeled and delivered to the AP classes. If for some reason a student did not get a bulletin first semester, please have the student speak with Megan Grimmesey second semester. Students will be asked on exam day to sign that they have read and agreed to the policies and procedures outlined in the 2012-13 Bulletin for AP Students and Parents.

TIMELINEMar. 22 Deadline to order regularly scheduled AP exams at $89 eachApr. 08 – 12 MANDATORY PRE-ADMINISTRATION SESSIONS Apr. 15 – 19 Extended deadline to order regularly scheduled AP exams at $137 eachMay 07 Deadline for ordering alternate late AP exams at $129 eachMay 06 – 17 Regularly scheduled AP examsMay 22 – 24 Alternate late AP exams

It is very important that we order the exams correctly the first time, so that students do not have any additional fees to pay because of any over-sights, so have the student PAY ATTENTION to the dates of their exams. LATE TESTING is allowed (using an alternate form of the examination) only in extreme hardship. These hardships are those in which students generally have a choice between the scheduled date and requesting an alternate date. Students must pay the additional $40 fee at the time they sign up. Those that are approved for a reduced rate are not subject to the additional $40 for whatever reason.

LATE TESTING Additional Fee Incurred: $40 per exam ($127 each)

• Academic contest/event• Athletic contest/event• Conflict with non-AP exam• Family commitment• Ordering error• Other school event• School closing (local decision, nonemergency)

PAYMENT METHODS

2. Scholarships: Send students to Megan Grimmesey ASAP if the cost is an issue. There may bescholarships available, but paperwork must be filled out beforehand.

REFUNDS

If a student pays for an exam and decides not to take it, he/she will receive a refund, minus a $13 fee per exam which the College Board charges for returns.

Why fill out a FAFSA? The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the first step in the financial aid process. You use the FAFSA to apply for federal student aid, such as grants, loans, and work-study. In addition, most states and colleges use the information from the FAFSA to award nonfederal aid. Many scholarship applications also require your “EFC”, Estimated Family Contribution, that is calculated from the information that is submitted on your FAFSA application. Your EFC will be listed on your Student Aid Report (SAR). Use the website https://studentaid.ed.gov/fafsa for information and application.

*1) PIN numbers, My FSA, FAFSA4casterAs soon as possible, apply for two Federal PIN numbers, one for the student and one for a parent or guardian. Website for registration is http://www.pin.ed.gov/ PINWebApp/pinindex.jsp. You will receive an email telling you how to

retrieve your PIN. Make sure you write down and keep handy the pass-phrase used for registration because you cannot be sent a reminder if you forget or lose your password. The PIN is an identifier that serves as an electronic signature for a parent and student, both of whom are required to sign the FAFSA. If you are filling out the FAFSA4caster, as mentioned below, you will be sent a PIN if you haven’t already applied for one.

*2) Go to website: https://studentaid.ed.gov - “Student Aid on the Web.” Then click in left hand box on the “My FSA,” then “Set Up Your Account.” Once you have created your My FSA Account, you can then complete your My FSA Profile. Using the Profile, you can add and update important information about yourself at any time. Whenever you update your Profile, the information will automatically carry over to any of Student Aid on the Web’s other modules. After you fill out the info on

your Profile, click on “Financial Aid and Scholarship Wizard,” to plan out, in 8 easy steps, your entire financial aid packages online! Notice they said “packages” — the wizard will help you find and calculate virtually everything you need for any and all schools you’re interested in. It will show you the deadlines for filing financial aid applications for the colleges you select, walk you through scholarship searches, help you estimate your expected family contribution and federal aid, and provide you a tool to interpret and analyze your financial aid award letters.

*3) Use the FAFSA4caster at: http://www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov to transfer all of your FAFSA4caster data to FAFSA on the Web once you are ready to apply for aid on or after January 1, 2013.

ATTENTION SENIORS!

Waiting for notification from colleges...

(excerpted from the Wall Street Journal, by Sue Shellenbarger)Few events arouse more teenage angst than the springtime arrival of college rejection letters. Teenagers who face rejection will be joining good company, including Nobel laureates, billionaire philanthropists, university presidents, and leaders of business, media and the arts who once received college or graduate-school rejection letters of their own. Both Warren Buffett and “Today” show host Meredith Vieira say that while being rejected by the school of their dreams was devastating, it launched them on a path to meeting life-changing mentors. He said, “You learn that a temporary defeat is not a permanent one.” Columbia University President Lee Bollinger was rejected as a teenager when he applied to Harvard. He says the experience cemented his belief that it was up to him alone to define his talents and potential. He accepted a scholarship to University of Oregon and later graduated from Columbia Law School. His advice: “Don’t allow other people’s assessment of you to determine your own self assessment.” If rejected by the school you love, Dr. Harold E. Varmus, a Nobel laureate and Harvard rejectee, advises to immerse yourself in life at a college that welcomes you. “The differences between colleges that seem so important before you get there will seem a lot less important once you arrive at one that offered you a place.”

Final College Admission ChecklistFollowing are the final steps students need to complete to wrap-up the college admission process:

ü I submitted my deposit, securing my spot at one of the colleges to which I was offered admission.

ü I received confirmation that my deposit was received by the college.ü I declined offers of admission to all other schools to which I was admitted, thanking them for

their offer and indicating my plans for enrollment elsewhere. Notifying these schools in a timely manner can help expedite movement on the colleges’ waitlists.

ü I have accepted my college’s financial aid award by returning any required forms by the deadline.

ü I have submitted all required forms and deposit for on-campus housing.

Seniors: Many people have helped you get where you are today - teachers and counselors who wrote your recommendations, coaches who called the athletic office, mentors who supported you through the process, and of course, your parents, who helped in countless ways. Have you thanked them? As your admissions journey is completed during the next few months, take a moment to show your appreciation to those who helped make it happen.

All events feature a panel of experts and a Q&A session from 7:00pm to 8:30 pm in the AHS library.

April 10 - Drug and Alcohol Use Prevention

Historically, AHS students have used marijuana and binge-drinking at rates higher than the state average. We are changing this. A panel of local experts will share information, respond to questions, and facilitate parent discussions.

I wandered lonely as a cloud

I wandered lonely as a cloudThat floats on high o'er vales and hills,When all at once I saw a crowd,A host, of golden daffodils;Beside the lake, beneath the trees,Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shineAnd twinkle on the milky way,They stretched in never-ending lineAlong the margin of a bay:Ten thousand saw I at a glance,Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but theyOut-did the sparkling waves in glee:A poet could not but be gay,In such a jocund company:I gazed---and gazed---but little thoughtWhat wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lieIn vacant or in pensive mood,They flash upon that inward eyeWhich is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills,And dances with the daffodils. William Wordsworth
