activity. The pattern is up to you. Thegoal is to set a pace which will keep thechild's interest alive while covering thematerial in the lessons. Some Baha'ichildren's classes which have used thisWorkBook as the centre of their lessonplans find it can take 12 sessions or moreto complete the material.

Unit One: God's CreationLevel I: Ages 6-9

INTRODUCTION EACH CHILD should have his or her owncopy of the WorkBook in order to do theactivities on each page. Please note thatthese materials are copyrighted and maynot be duplicated. They can be orderedthrough your Baha'i Distribution Service.

THE PURPOSE of this Guide is to assistparents and teachers to make the best useof the Baha'i children's WorkBooksproduced by WellSpring International. The materials may be used in severalways, including: The ParentlTeacher Guide offers:

.by a child at home under the supervisionof a parent;

.as the basis for a family deepening

program;

.An Outline for a Lesson Plan for eachlesson..Suggestions for Activities by pagenumber..Answers to Questions, Puzzles, andWord Games by page number.

.as a supplementary activity for Baha'iclasses, to be done at home betweenclasses;

SUGGESTED GUIDELINE: Youngchildren appreciate structure and routineas well as novelty and varied activities. You may want to keep a regular format foreach class, such as opening prayer, musictogether, report on goal-setting or someother activity from last class, then thelesson, ending with a prayer memorizedby one of the children and music.

.as the primary content for Baha'iclasses, with the WorkBook serving as thefocus of class activities. Some of theactivities, such as The Virtue of the Week, may be used as "homework" at home or bya group in a class setting.

If you are using the WorkBook in achildren's class, you may want to have aground rule of no turning ahead (by fasterstudents), practicing patience and unityinstead. This may be different from theirexperience of workbooks in school whichare typically for individualized work.

AGE RANGE: You may find the Work-Book suitable for children younger or olderthan the 6 to 9 age range. Its appro-priateness will depend on the child'sunique capacity and past experience withBaha'i education.

TIME INVOLVED: Each lesson maytake from one to several sessions, depend-ing on how much time you choose to spendon a particular craft project or other

It is our heartfelt hope that you and thechildren who use these materials will findthem enlightening, practical, and fun.

.Tape player with music tapes on unitysuch as "If We Only Knew" (Pages 3,7, 14).Lamp with pieces of cloth or sheerfabric, radio or tape player (Page 7).Photo or bouquet of daisies, photo orbouquet of varied flowers (Page 13).Magazines with pictures of varied races.Paste. Construction paper for making acollage.

LESSON PLAN OUTLINE:

GOAL: To enable the child to understandthat the love of God is the basis of life andcreation, and to appreciate the importanceof unity.

OBJECTIVES:child(ren) will:

During this lesson, the

1. Become aware of how God's love isexpressed in the world and in his or herlife.

Ask the children to repeat the passage atthe top of the page after you. You maywish later in the class to have them createa banner to hang on the wall at home withthese words on it.2. Learn that the purpose of religion is to

Discuss with them what it means that Godloved us even before we were created andthat's why He created us. Ask them totalk about ways they can see God's lovesurrounding the earth. (Examples: rainfor us and the trees to drink, sun to shine, beauty all around us in nature, otherpeople to love us, etc.)

3. Memorize a Hidden Word and thinkabout how to allow God's love to reachhim/her.

4. Learn about the virtue of loving kind-ness and how to set a spiritual goal inorder to practice it.

Invite them to draw a picture on page 1per instructions. Then ask each child totalk about his or her picture.

5. Appreciate the principle of unity indiversity.

MATERIALS NEEDED:(*Starred items are the most importantmaterials to have on hand. All others areoptional)

The virtue to focus on in this lesson isloving-kindness. When you see any signsof this in the children's behavior, such ascourtesy in sharing the crayons, commenton it and name the virtue in a particularchild or children. "Karen, you wereshowing loving-kindness when you sharedthe crayons with John."

MATERIALS:.Crayons.Varied materials for creating a banner orposter: shells, feathers, ribbons, coloredpaper, odds and ends.

create unity and that all the revealedreligions are one.

.*Pens, pencils, crayons, colored markers

.Materials for creating a banner orposter (Sequins, small shells, feathers, ribbons, colored paper) (For page 1).*3-5 index cards (Page 2).Book of Bible stories or stories of anyManifestation (Page 2).Construction paper for flags and flowers(Page 3)

Ask the children to count the number ofchildren holding flags (3) and thoseholding flowers (5) in the picture on Page3. If you wish to use this as a craft project, some can make unity flags and some canmake flowers out of construction paper.Write a passage from the Writings on itsuch as "Ye are all the flowers of onegarden" or "Unity in diversity". If youhave tapes or music available on thistheme, have them sing along before theydo the craft project.

Read the passage by 'Abdu'l-Baha at thetop of the page and ask the children topantomime what they think the wordsmean, such as love, unity, enmity, discord.

Ask several children to take turns readingthe lines on this page from "God loves you"to the end.

"Who Loves You" Game:Have the names of the 10 Manifestationson separate flash cards (3X5). On one sidethe name is fully spelled out. On theother, only the first 2 letters are givenwith lines for each of the other letters ofthe name. (Example: Mu- )

MATERIALS:.Construction Paper, varied colors.Tape Player.Music tapes on unity e.g. "If We OnlyKnew"Say to the class "Who loves you?" They are

to answer: "Muhammad loves me." Youcan also do this with individuals or teamsof children who can confer and decide theanswer. Go through all the names in thisway. This game can be repeated in futureclasses as a review of progressiverevelation.

You may wish to read or tell a story or twoof one or more of the Manifestations, demonstrating Their loving nature.

MATERIALS:.Flash cards per instructions above (3X5).Bible stories of Jesus or stories of otherManifestations.

Read the words on this page aloud or havea good reader do so. Ask the class to talkabout what loves feels like to them. Thenhave them count Jonah's friends. (18)

Have them write the names of those theylove and those who love them. This mayinclude God, Baha'u'llah, people in theirfamily, friends, etc. Discuss with themwhat it feels like to love someone whodoesn't love you back. This is in prep-aration for the Hidden Word on Page 7.

light shows. But it is still there. We canseparate ourselves from God's love by notloving Him or not letting His love reach us.Another way to demonstrate this is to havea tape player or radio available. Show howit is impossible to hear the music unlessyou turn on the machine. How is this like"Love Me that I may love thee"? Ask thechildren, what do you do sometimes thatblocks God's love? (Such as not thinking ofGod, not praying, continuing to do thingswhich we know don't please God. The loveis always there but we can cut ourselvesoff from it.)

Have the children listen to some lovelymusic, perhaps a Baha'i tape, and talkabout how the music makes them feel. The music is invisible, just like God's love, yet both have an effect.

The "trick" of this page is to count theword "love" in the two sentences on the topof the page. (Answer: 11) Have adiscussion involving the children in theidea that:

.There are lots of kinds of love

.There is more love than we think thereIS

.Some love is overlooked (like the word"love" in the sentence "Love appears -times".)

ANSWERS:Who is God's servant? I am.Can you stop God's love from reaching you?Yes.

After they have counted, give them time tocolor the page.

MATERIALS:.Lamp, pieces of sheer fabric or othercloth.tape player, soft music.MATERIALS:

.Crayons or colored markers

ANSWERS: Haw can you show...loveHim? No, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, No, Yes

An exercise you may want to use here is tocover a lamp with veils or pieces of cloth. The more layers are put on, the less the

You can also point out that one of the bestways to love God is to love HisManifestations and practice what Theyteach us. Such as loving kindness

Ask the children to practice lovingkindness and courtesy by not calling outthe number after they count the "loves"but to write it in their work-book and waitfor everyone to finish. Comment on thatbehavior in someone who would find itdifficult to do. (One of the most importanttimes to praise or show appreciation iswhen effort is needed).

Hidden Word activity continued-What can you do to help God's love get toyou? Love Him.

The next two pages relate to the HiddenWord. Show them how to memorize (byhearing it over and over or, by covering aline and saying it to themselves over andover, then going to the next line, repeatingall they have learned so far, on to the nextetc.)

ANSWERS: No, Yes, Yes

If you had the opportunity to present apicture or a real bouquet of flowers, all thesame, such as daisies and compare it to apicture or bouquet of multi-colored flowers, this would be a nice way to reinforce thebeauty of diversity.

MATERIALS:.Pictures of or actual bouquets of flowers, one the same color, one varied.

Read the Hidden Word on this page.

Have the children either individually, as agroup, or in teams create a collage usingpictures out of magazines of people ofdifferent ages, races, and backgrounds.Ask them to write above it a line from theWritings such as "Ye are all the leaves ofone tree."

MATERIALS: (see next page)

The fruits of human life are the virtues, work and service. You may want to pointout examples of loving kindness shown bythe child(ren) today or in the past or askthem about a time someone wasparticularly loving or kind to them. Thenread this page and go on to the goal settingon the next page.

'Abdu'l-Baha said "All humanity are thechildren of God; they belong to the samefamily, to the same original race...racialassumption and distinction are nothingbut superstition." (PUP 299) Racialdifferences developed as adaptations toclimate.

Read the "how to" of loving kindness, thenask the child(ren) to put their ideas downon this page.

Have them take turns reading the ideas onthis page and ask them what their ownfavorite is. Then have them write theirplan out on the bottom of the page. Askthem to report to the class next time howtheir practice of loving kindness went. Engage the children in a discussion of why

they think God created so many differentcolors and ethnic variations. Read thispage and then playa tape or sing a song ofunity, such as "We Belo.ng to the Family ofMan" or "Unity House" from the album, "IfWe Only Knew".

PARENT/TEACHERGUIDE

Offer an opportunity for sharing abouttheir practice of loving-kindness in theperiod since last class. How is theiraccomplishment of the goal going? If someare remembering to do it, praise them fortheir steadfastness.LESSON PLAN OUTLINE:

After reading the passage on this page, ask the children the meaning of"countless", "infinite" and "range". Youmay wish to have dictionaries available tolook up these words. An ongoing craftproject is to begin a Baha'i dictionary withwords such as this with their definitionswritten in it from lesson to lesson. Eachchild or teams of children may createdecorative covers for these dictionarieswith a way to add more pages whenneeded. You may wish to do the craftproject a little later in the lesson.

GOAL: To help the child become aware ofthe power and love of the Creator throughunderstanding that God created manyworlds, both vast and tiny, outside of usand within us, and that His love surroundsthem all.

OBJECTIVES: In this lesson, thechild(ren) will:

MATERIALS:.At least one dictionary.construction paper.crayons.twine or ribbon.lined paper

1. become aware of the multitude anddiversity of the worlds God has created;2. learn the importance of the connectionwith God, and of prayer as a way ofmaking that connection;3. memorize the short obligatory prayer;4. learn the interdependence of all theworlds of God;5. become aware of life after death as oneof God's worlds;6. set a goal of practicing the virtue oftrustworthiness.

Biggest number you know: (Examples, million, trillion, google)

MATERIALS:(* Starred items are the most important materialsto have on hand. All others are optional)

Offer pencils and or crayons for thedrawing on this page. The virtue topractice this week is trustworthiness. When you see a child putting backmaterials praise him/her for beingtrustworthy.

.*Pens, pencils, crayons, colored markers

.*Construction paper, lined paper, twineor ribbon, dictionaries (Page 1).Story about a farm, magazines (Page 11)NOTE: If you are in a rural area, a visit toa farm would be very helpful with thislesson, a wonderful way to observe..*Construction paper, scissors (Page 14)

Connect-the-Dots is a bunny.

You may want to have the childrenmemorize this Hidden Word inits entirety.

MATERIALS:Hidden Words of Bahli'u'lllih

ANSWERS: Hear it, Say it, Write it.

ANSWERS TO CROSSWORD:

Down:1. Cold2.

If you wish, have them copy the prayer intheir own hand-writing on a separate pieceof paper. If you have a tape recorderavailable, have one of the best readersread or recite the prayer into the taperecorder and have them listen to it.Several may want to do this. It helps inmemorization. They are thus hearing it,saying it and writing it per Page 5.

Across4. Dream5. Breeze

Have a discussion about prayer using thequestions on this page. Read the passageon the bottom of the page. You may wantto have them look up "conducive","protection" and "preservation" for theirdictionaries.

Emphasis on this page is on how God caresfor every creature within its own world.

Ask someone to read the words on thispage. Then ask the children to color thescene.

A SECRET CODE: Love me that I maylove thee.Have the children read the short

obligatory prayer and ask if anyone hasmemorized it. Ask them to do so at homeand come in prepared to recite it nextclass. Explain that it is to be recitedprivately, between the hours of noon andsunset.

The key point here is that some of themost important things inlife are invisible.

I Have the children use crayons or coloredmarkers to color this design.

Have them make a cage by foldingconstruction paper in half, then cuttingslits almost to the ends and taping thesides together. If you know Origami orhave another way to make a bird, helpthem to do that as well.

MATERIALS:.Construction paper.scissors

ANSWER re: Connection with God:Prayer, reading the Writings, teaching theFaith, obedience to the Teachings, lovingGod.

ELAINE PHilLIPS

The children may want to color this pageafter reading it.

After reading this page, turn to page 18 toenable the children to set a goal forpracticing the virtue of trustworthiness.

Help the children set a goal to practice aspecific behavior of trust-worthiness. Itcould be a promise to God or to a parent tokeep their room clean or turn in all theirhomework, or do everything they tellpeople they are going to do. It is one of thevery most important virtues, thefoundation of all the others.

LESSON PLAN OUTLINE:

.Magnets, compass, metal filings, ormagnetized letters (Page 6).Story of service of'Abdu'I-Baha or someother Baha'i (Page 7).*Baha'f Prayers, Hidden Words ofBaha'u'llah (Page 11).Story of Midas Touch if available (Page12).*Paper bags or small recycledcontainers, in which to collect natural"treasures", materials to decorate them, glue (Page 14)

GOAL: To enable the child(ren) tounderstand the Mineral Kingdom, howGod's love expresses itself in this kingdomand what gifts we have in common withthe Mineral Kingdom.

Begin with sharing experiences of how thevirtue to practice is going.

OBJECTIVES: In this lesson thechild(ren) will:

"The Ladder of God's Creation"Letter Scramble: (from bottom to top)

ANSWERS:1. Rock, holds2. tree, grow3. duck, swim4. child, thinks

1. become aware of what belongs in theMineral Kingdom;2. understand how the love of Godexpresses itself in the Mineral Kingdom asthe power of attraction;3. be introduced to the idea of the earth asa living organism;4. appreciate the diversity of thiskingdom;5. understand the concept of value andhow man has overemphasized it in theMineral Kingdom;6. set a goal to acquire the virtue ofsteadfastness;7. recognize that we all have gems withinus which need to be developed.

Read the bottom of the page, then moveon.

MATERIALS:.Pencils with erasers.crayons.

This maze is a good opportunity to practicethe virtue of this lesson -steadfastness.It is also a chance for those who finish firstto show patience. Acknowledge it whenyou see it. They may color the childrenaround the maze while they wait forthe others to finish.

MATERIALS:(*Starred items are the most important materials tohave on hand. All others are optional).*Pens, pencils, crayons or coloredmarkers.*Construction paper of different colors.*Scissors.Poster board for making posters (Page 4and 15).Story about environment (Page 4) I

You may want to have the children designa poster together or individually or inteams which shows how we need to changeour habits of caring for the earth.

MATERIALS:.Story about the environment if available.Poster board for making posters.Colored markers

Smallest member: Examples are pebbles, sand, dust particles.Largest member: Examples are stars, mountains, the earth (partly mineral),planets. How are they both alike?: Examples areatoms are attracted, they are solid, Godmade them. How are they different?: Depends onanswer.

Have the children draw their twoexamples at the bottom of the page.

The key point on this page is the power ofattraction or love which holds the atoms ofthe mineral kingdom together.

Read or have a student read the quotationon this page.

ANSWER to word puzzle: MAGNETISM

If you have access to a set of magnets, or acompass, make up a game for the childrento play with it or do a demonstration ofmagnetism.

Children can get excited about theenvironment. Draw out their awareness ofhow people are endangering the environ-ment and ways we can help it. (Clean upindustrial emissions; recycle glass, paper, tin, etc.,)

(continued on next page)

If you have a storybook about it, such asan Indian tale, that would be very useful.

ANSWERS: Oil, Diamonds, Lava,Copper, Air, Dirt, Building, Gold, Water

What are some of the things you have seenthat show the earth is alive?Examples are volcanoes, the earth movesas in glacier, climate and weather changes(it keeps adapting), continents moving andchanging as in continental drifts.

The concept that the earth is alive is animportant one. The Gaia theory of theearth as a living organism, growing andadapting, is becoming more prevalent. Here is where you may want to emphasizethe care we must take of our environmentsince it is a living thing which supportsour life (air to breathe, water to drink, soilto grow food in, light and heat to warm us,beauty, etc.) and we must support andnurture its life.

PAGE 6 (continued)

Magnetic Letters Game: If you haveplastic, magnetic letters available, havethe children form teams and make up asmany words that belong to the mineralkingdom as they can with a set ofmagnetic letters within a given timeperiod. Team work helps them practiceunity and consultation. (Examples: tin, rock, sand, star, air, magnet, dirt, dust, diamond, gem, etc.)

What do you know in nature that showsthis special power? Examples are theearth orbiting the sun, the North Poleattracting the compasses, magnetic rock(magnets), charged particles.

ANSWERS:1. Mineral people like to eat: salt, calcium(in cheese, etc.), iron (in spinach, etc.)2. Makes the lights go on: electricity3. Makes a car go: gasoline4. Makes a sailboat move: wind or air

MATERIALS:.Compass, magnets, metal filings,magnetized letters

Word Puzzle: .Down: SERVICE, MAGNETAcross: MERCIFUL, A1vrAIN,HEAVENLY, FAITH, STRENGTH

MATERIALS:.Story of service, perhaps of'Abdu'I-Baha

MATERIALS: Baha'i Prayers,Hidden Words of Baha'u'llah

Ask the children to name some of thegases (air, clouds, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, helium for balloons, carbonmonoxide), liquids (rain, sea water, riverwater, oil, flowing lava) solids (rocks, dirt, mountains, ice)

Things that rhyme with rock:Clock, sock, block, flock (of geese)

Ask different children to share in readingthis page about the virtue to practice. Askthem for examples of when they havepracticed it. One example is when theylearned to tie their shoelaces! You maywant to make up a guessing game such as20 Questions to have them guess "tyingtheir shoelaces."

This is a very important point! We havethe magnetic powers of faith and service. Some stories of the way'Abdu'l-Bahaserved or of other Baha'is who have servedwould be helpful here.

For those children who choose to memorizea new passage or prayer this week, youmay want to help them select one. Theymay want to memorize the Hidden Wordon Page 14.

Why is someone with the virtues richerthan someone with material wealth? What happens to material wealth when wego to the next world? The story of ' 'The

Midas Touch" or some other story illus-trating the point would be helpful here.

'Abdu1-Baha wrote about the "wealth" orabird in Some Answered Questions, p. 79:

"No riches, wealth, comfort or ease of thematerial world is equal to the wealth of abird; all the areas of these plains andmountains are its dwelling, and all theseeds and harvests are its food and wealth, and all the lands, villages, meadows, pastures, forests and wildernesses are itspossessions. Now, which is richer, thisbird, or the most wealthy man? for nomatter how many seeds it may take orbestow, its wealth does not decrease.

Discuss how we are God's treasuries. In usHe has deposited all His own qualities, which we reflect when we make an effort.

Then it is clear thai the honor andexaltation of man must be something morethan material riches. Material comfortsare only a branch, but the root of theexaltation of man is the good attributesand virtues which are the adornments ofhis reality."

MATERIALS:.Story "The Midas Touch" or equivalent.

After the children have completed thispage, talk with them about it. Ask themwhat makes a person rich? How do theyknow who is rich? People who do not knowhow God defines wealth believe thatmaterial things (usually mineral things)equal wealth.

Read the page, then have children answerthe questions.ANSWERS:c. sillyAnswer to all 3 questions: I am

Ask one of the children to read the HiddenWord. If you are in an area with naturalsurroundings and weather permits, youcan take a walk with the children, givingthem paper bags or small boxes in whichto collect "treasures" such as pebbles, leaves, rocks, shells, feathers.

You may want to make a craft project outof this by having them decorate recycledcontainers (such as cottage cheesecontainers or coffee cans) as their treasureboxes first.(continued on next page)

PAGE 14 (continued)

One way to do this activity is to send thetreasure boxes home and have them bringback what they collect to share at the nextclass.

End the lesson by having the children dothe dot-to-dot star on this page and talk tothem about what stars they are!
