I started school when I was 5-years old. For the next 35 years (or so!) I went to one school or
another: grade school, high school, college, seminary, etc. Much of the !me my study has
been si#ng in classrooms of one sort or another, but a great deal of it has been outside the
tradi!onal classroom.
In the church and in our Chris!an life, most of the “formal” learning happens early. Many of
us went to Sunday school, learned about Noah, Jonah, and Jesus. And then a,er that, when
we got into middle school, we began to learn about the church through confirma!on. When
we were confirmed, it was like a “holy gradua!on ceremony” and that’s where most of our
learning ended. The trouble is, just when we are at the age where we can understand the
things we learned in confirma!on, we stop studying. We wouldn’t pull our kids out of school
at the end of 8th grade, because they had learned everything they need to know, and we
ought not to stop growing in our Chris!an Educa!on either. That’s not what God intended for
us.
One of the marks of being a disciple (follower) of Christ, is the prac!ce of “study”. Study can
happen in many different ways: individually, in small groups, or in large groups. We can study
scriptures, church teachings (i.e. Luther’s Catechism), commentaries by various authors, or
any number of other books, videos, podcasts, etc.
One of Mar!n Luther’s greatest accomplishments was to take the scriptures out of the hands
of the church leaders and to put it into the hands of the people, in the language that they
could understand. Luther did this, not so we would have another obliga!on to !e up our
already overtasked lives, but as an aid to freeing up our lives.
Scriptures contain many people who have faced the same struggles that we face today. Even
though Noah didn’t have the latest episode of “Walking Dead” to distract him from building
the ark, he did have family obliga!ons that competed for his !me. He did have people
making fun of him for his li<le “weekend project”. The same God who was with Noah, and
Jonah, and Jesus, is also with us. We learn more about this from spending !me in the Word.
This month, I encourage you to go back into your bible. Reread the stories you read as a child,
or in confirma!on, or a,er worship, go home and reread the lessons for the day. What
sounds different now than it did when you were li<le? The more we study and pray, the
greater chance God has to change our lives.
If you discovered something new, share it with me!
Pastor Candy
I have always found it somewhat perplexing to be able to recall certain specific moments
from my childhood. I remember when I was about eight or nine years old. It was Good
Friday, and I was home because there was no school that day. I can also recall that it was a
very dark, gloomy, rainy day, so any outside activities were on hold. I was sitting in the house
with my dad, who had just returned home from church (my dad attended the Catholic Church).
My mother, sister, and myself would be attending church that evening.
I asked my dad to do something fun with me, since I could not go outside. He slowly
put down his newspaper, and in a very calm voice, he tried to tell me that this was not a day for
fun. He said, son, on this day, Jesus Christ died for all of us, and this day should be respected.
Being as young as I was, I really did not understand, but I accepted what he told me as best I
could.
I have always been able to remember that brief moment, but why did that one specific
moment stay in my memory all of these years? As I got older, I certainly understood the events
of that day more and more. But do we really understand what happened on that hill outside the
city of Jerusalem. The pain; the suffering; the chaos.....something none of us will never know.
But we all must know and realize that whatever agony was endured, we can all be comforted
by the fact that we will be blessed with eternal salvation....a love that cannot be measured. As I
got older, I have often thought about the symbolism of that Good Friday when I was a child.
To me, it just seemed like a very gloomy day, but what my father was trying to teach me was
that this was a time to show ultimate respect. And very soon after that, this sad day would
lead to events later on, which would be filled with great joy and happiness.
As we approach Easter Sunday, one of the highlights for our church is the Circle of Love
celebration, which is held on Maundy Thursday. This, of course, is where we pay tribute to
those members who are eighty years of age, or above. There are almost a hundred members of
our church that we want to honor, and these members are so thrilled and appreciative of what is
done for them. But what many of you may not know, these members do so much for our
church. Some serve as counters; some are there every week as a sewing/quilting group to
support Lutheran World Relief; others help out at Second Chance faithfully; and others assist
with Altar Guild. Also, others assist on the scholarship committee; members of WELCA;
leaders of our Sunday School classes....and the list goes on and on. What these folks have
done for St. Paul over the years has set the bar very high for future generations of members.
Hopefully we can live up to the standards they have set for us.
Sincerely,
Paul Mikula
Congregational Council President
Colossians 3:23-24 “In all the work you are doing, work the best you can. Work as if you
were doing it for the Lord, not for people. Remember that you will receive your reward from
the Lord, which He promised to His people. You are serving the Lord Christ.”

“Circle of Love “ – a Special Maundy Thursday Service St. Paul Lutheran Church is blessed with many members who are age 80 and above. There are 95 members who belong to this group and of those, there are 31 who are 90 and above!!! They are cherished individuals who have much to offer, in terms of life experience and wisdom. It seems fitting to honor those who have contributed of their time, talents and treasures to the St. Paul family during all or part of those years!! On Maundy Thursday, April 2, at the 10:00 a.m. worship service, all members who are 80 and over or will reach age 80 during 2015, will be honored. We want to identify each and every one of these persons and make every effort to bring together those who are physically able for this event. After the service, a luncheon will be offered, as well, for the honorees, spouses, family and those attending the service. Please note that all are welcome to attend this service and luncheon. If you are one of these individuals, you should have received a personal invitation in the mail. Should transportation to church for this service be needed, it will be provided. For those who are able to come independently but need assistance, handicapped parking and accessible entry to the church foyer is available behind the church, off West Lower Line Street. In addition, valet parking and assistance with wheelchairs and walkers will be made available both before the service and after the luncheon. The group of attendees will be photographed to document the event. Please help us do everything possible to gather these valued members of St. Paul and express our gratitude for all that they have done in the past and continue to do at present. They aid and encourage us all.
