Some of you know that I have recently spent a few days back in my hometown, Thomasville, GA, cleaning out my dad and stepmoms home in preparation for the closing in late June. The attic was a time capsule of the 39 years my mom and dad spent together, prior to her death in 1991. Many of you have faced the task of sorting through the tangible remnants of your loved oneslives. You have encouraged me with words of empathy and compassion, for which I am grateful. After Scott and I brought down all these relics, I ran across a small blue suitcase. It belonged to my great-aunt Willie Alexander, sister of my maternal grandmother. My mom kept in touch with and financially supported Aunt Willie until my moms death. Soon after I lost touch with Willie, as she was moved from her home in Wewahitchika into a nursing home somewhere in Florida. Some years had passed when I decided to call nursing homes in Panama City to try to locate her. Someone in the family had said she might be in that town. After several calls, I located her. After that, occasionally I would visit or send a card. When Willie died, my father and I had her graveside service in Enterprise, Alabama, placing her beside her husband. Finding that little blue suitcase brought all those memories back. As I opened the lid, there were very few personal items – a cat calendar with accompanying cards of photographs of cats (as a child I remember Willie loved her cat, cooking him scrambled eggs every morning!). A wallet with her social security card and a few coins. A Bible, obviously given to her by some group who visited the care facility. And one more thing – a thinking of youcard from me and Scott and our boys. One card. A wave of guilt washed over me. Why didnt I look for her sooner? Why did I let the years pass without trying to find her, send her money, visit her? Why did I think my life was so busy that she only received an occasional, all-too-infrequent, card? Friends in Christ, we cannot take back the mistakes of yesterday. What s done is done. But we can change the way we respond and behave today. If you are estranged from family or friends, take a step today toward reconciliation. I promise that Ill do the same. If you want to tell someone you love and care about them, do it now. Dont delay. Do something today that you can feel good about, rather than regret later. Take advantage of this day to support someone else who is hurting. Be a little more blind to the faults of others. Carpe diemseize the day. We are not promised tomorrow. Our love in Jesus Christ motivates us to move beyond ourselves and our own petty thoughts and desires, to care and love others. Christs model of ministry moves us to reorient our thinking, to change our priorities. Rather than looking out for our own interests, we want to care for others first. J-O-Y is Jesus, Others, then You.Jesus first, inspiring us to compassionate acts of care for those around us. Then ourselves. Let us not neglect opportunities to love, to serve, and to worship together in community in these summer months. Ill see you in your place this Sunday! S.C.A.R.F. (Seaside, Caring and Reaching Friends)

The S.C.A.R.F. Ministry is a U.M.W. Outreach Ministry. Many items have been donated to this necessary ministry for the homeless, with much appreciation. There is a tall white collection basket located near the Fellowship Hall, labeled S.C.A.R.F. Scarves, socks, gloves, and toboggans are

collected for the chilly months of the year. For the summer months, please donate new items such as socks, undershirts, sunscreen, and bug spray. These items are donated to Street Reach clients, as well as their children during their summer camp opportunity. Thank you!

C.A.R.E.S. (Caring and Reaching Everyone, Seaside)

The C.A.R.E.S. Ministry is a joint effort of Seaside’s United Methodist Women and United Methodist Men. This ministry provides an ongoing maintenance program for any Seaside member needing temporary assistance in completing tasks beyond their ability. Examples of need could be moving heavy items, reaching heights requiring a ladder, yard work, or general housework. The C.A.R.E.S. form is located in the church gallery on a small table. Please feel free to fill out the necessary information on the form, seal it in the envelope provided, and place it in the labeled box. The box will be checked weekly and someone will be in touch with you shortly regarding your request. We can all use a helping hand occasionally!

Recognizes Shallotte Middle School Teachers!

On May 5th, as part of the Teacher Appreciation Week celebration, Seaside Outreach Committee provided lunch for 75 to 80 teachers at the Shallotte Middle School.

The United Methodist Men will hold their next monthly meeting on Monday, June 5th, at 6:30 p.m. Our speakers will be representatives from several of the major local charities we support. Our donation checks from UMM will be presented to them at this meeting. The Golf Tournament Committee will report on the June 3rd Annual Tournament. Marvin Ragland and Greg Rocklage will be providing the dinner that evening. Come and enjoy a good dinner with great fellowship before the summer break. Our

meetings will resume in the fall on September 11th, instead of the 4th because of Labor Day. The UMM will be providing dinner for the STARS program on Monday, July 10th. This is the only planned event for the

summer. Enjoy your summer break and safe travels for all who will be hitting the road for visits or vacations. United Methodist Men enjoy serving our church and community. We’re always looking for more men to participate by

joining us at meetings and working on our projects. We’re striving to reach a goal of at least 50 attendees at our monthly meetings. Consider bringing a friend or neighbor as a guest to our next meeting in June. They do not have to be a member of Seaside UMC to join our group as we welcome all members of our community.

We thank you all for your loyalty and generous donations to our Food Pantry. We couldn’t serve so many in our community without your compassion and generosity. Our Edge of the Field, “free store”, also could not operate each week to make clothing, shoes, diapers and many other necessities available to our visitors without your donations. We could not operate without the many volunteers who are at the store each week.

Thank you to everyone at Seaside.

Project AGAPE Christmas Boxes

Project AGAPE is a mission of the NC Conference of the United Methodist Church, which was launched in 1993. It serves the Karabagh region of Armenia, the only organized group involved in this area. Since then AGAPE has adopted and is committed to the goals of Christian education, supporting the moral principles of the Armenian people and developing humanitarian and benevolent activities. One of those is the Christmas boxes for children, packed by local NC UMC congregations and sent from the MERCI center. Over 3,000 boxes were sent to Armenian children in 2016!

This year Seaside will participate in this ministry, packing plastic shoeboxes for children from 0-18 years, your choice. As many items are school supplies, we will be sure to publish the exact lists so you can catch the "before school sales!"

Toboggan-style hats and mittens can be knit for all children's sizes. Look in the August newsletter for all the details before packing! Packed boxes will be transported to the MERCI center sometime in September where they will be shipped to Armenia for Christmas delivery. The Armenian parents say these boxes are the only gifts their children receive during a year's time and that they bring so much joy it is unimaginable for us!

GETTING TO KNOW: Matthew Nelson,

Seaside’s 2017 Duke Divinity Summer Intern

Early History: I am the youngest of three, and I have an older Sister and Brother. My parents still live in Santa Barbara, CA, a wonderful beach city--I am looking forward to living on the Coast again. I moved to the Greater Los Angeles area for college living in Azusa and Glendora, CA, on the far far reaches of Los Angeles County, before moving to Pasadena, CA, where I stayed up until I left to move to Durham to start school. Education and Interests: I studied Christian Ministries and Theology at Azusa Pacific University, a mid-sized, private Christian liberal arts school in Azusa, CA. As far as hobbies/activities I am a big sports and music person. Baseball is my favorite sport, I played throughout most of my childhood and adolescence, and redeveloped a deep passion for the sport as a fan in my early adulthood. Music, I love listening and playing--drums, guitar--mostly for fun as a personal hobby. While I was between seminaries I worked as a FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) Leave of Absence Specialist, for a national company, it was surprisingly interesting work, and the experience as a whole was extremely helpful in furthering my own personal growth and maturity. I grew up in the Evangelical Covenant Church, and I have enjoyed making connections between my denomination and the United Methodist Church thanks to our shared Pietist roots. What will you do at SUMC? Listening, learning, and some preaching, teaching, and pastoral care Pets? Not yet, though I hope to get a dog as soon as it becomes possible and responsible.

Walk in the Footsteps of Moses This Summer

This Summer you have the opportunity to travel through the story of

Moses in a brand new Adam Hamilton book study, "Moses: In the Footsteps

of a Reluctant Prophet." Our Duke Summer Intern, Matthew Nelson, will

lead this six-week study beginning on Thursday, June 22nd from 6:30-8:00 in

the Choir Room. This class is open to all so please sign up in the Gallery or

visit our website to register. Register now to ensure your spot in the class!

July 4th OFFICE CLOSED

Summertime . . . and the living is easy . . . well, at least that's what we hope will happen during our summer months. In reality, this is our time to recover from a busy music year and prepare for

another! It is during this "down time" that Lynn and I rest, refresh, renew and plan. If you see us on the beach, we may look like nothing is happening but our minds are working hard!

Our choirs and ensembles need this slow time to rest, to spend time with family and to gear up for another exciting fall of music! So, even though the choirs may not sing every Sunday, there will be special music during June, July, and August, and we hope you will enjoy it. If anyone wants to volunteer to sing a solo during these months, please feel free to speak to me and I will work with you to make that happen. Don't be afraid to share your talents!

ATTENTION ALL MEN: July has 5 Sundays and you know what that

means—July 30th is 5th Sunday Men's Choir at the 11:00 service. We had a wonderful group on April 30th but would like to see more men participate in July. We will sing familiar songs and there is only 1 rehearsal, at 10:40. So plan now to join Lomie Lou and the rest of the men and sing His praises! I will be busy with VBS and STARS during the summer months. I

always look forward to working with the children! During July and August, I will be attending several music workshops to help me prepare for the coming seasons. Thank you for your continued support of our Music Ministry. We are blessed with wonderful musicians and an appreciative congregation.

Happy summer to all! Kathryn

Garden of the Disciples Through the generosity of a Seaside member, the Garden has a new look.

Recently 5,400 pounds of hand carved marble urns were added to the altar area of the Garden. Carved in China, the urns are a beautiful addition to the

serenity of the Garden.

Renovations to the Garden are now complete. Make sure to visit the

Garden and spend a few moments in prayer and gratitude for the beauty

of the Garden.

International Mission

Have you ever wanted to be a part of an international mission project? If so, here is your chance! My name is Kim Curry, and my husband and I moved to Ocean Isle

Beach in October. We've been visiting Seaside Methodist since then and come from Trinity UM in Ronceverte, WV. I've been part of a group called Mountains to Mountains since 2011—a ministry of service and friendship between the peoples of Haiti and West Virginia. On June 24th, I'll visit again going to the small village of Cazale to a mission called Real Hope for Haiti to help conduct a free eyeglass/vision clinic. Following is a wish list of items needed for both the mission and the eyeglass clinic, and it is my hope that Seaside will become partners in this endeavor. A collection box will be in the Fellowship Hall through June 19th. If you have questions, please email me at [email protected] or call 304-646-9360. Mountains to Mountains has a Facebook page and the website is www.mountainstomountains.weebly.com Items desired:

This year S.T.A.R.S. will formally welcome our parents at a Parent Orientation Dinner. Unlike the opening ceremony of years' past, these Orienta-tion Meetings are a requirement for the program. During these meetings we'll get to know each other over dinner then have a program orientation and tour of the facility.

In an effort to welcome our families and have the opportunity to have individuals assigned to each group, we're asking for help these two evenings. Each meeting is scheduled for 6PM - dinner then orientation. Join us for dinner, meet the families and be there to answer questions and help them tour. Sign up sheets are located in the Gallery. Thank you in advance for helping our S.T.A.R.S. parents feel welcomed at Seaside.

Annual Conference—June 16-18th

A Word From Your Director of Formation Stefanie Riley

“She Creates Chaos” “God is not a God of chaos.” How many times have you heard that said? I have often found myself in the midst of a whirlwind of uncontrolled circumstances, and somebody confidently says, “Well, this is not from God, because God is not a God of chaos. God is a God of peace.” But as we read the Scriptures, God is both constantly and consistently stirring up the

world, creating change and newness, and from the outside perspective, it looks like chaos. Do you think Mary, a 13-year-old virgin mother-to-be felt the pain of chaos? Do you think Moses, leading the rebellious and fickle people of God, felt the stress of chaos? Do you think Paul, often finding himself in the midst of rioting crowds or unruly churches, felt the doubt of chaos? Do you think Jesus, fully human, seeing the overwhelming sickness and needs of the people, felt the presence of chaos? I would contend that the answer to all of those questions is, “Yes.” And, what is the one consistent piece to all of these biblical struggles? Well, she comes at the beginning of June . . .

Pentecost! This is the Sunday we remember that strange day when the cowardly disciples of Jesus become powerhouses of evangelism, preaching the forgiveness of sins and the resurrection of Christ, even at the cost of their own freedom and lives. This is the Sunday when the same power that raised Jesus from the dead came to dwell in us, so that Jesus could be present with all of his people at once, instead of being limited by space and time.

But do not fear—after Pentecost we will soon put the Spirit back into a dark closet where she belongs. And then we will begin to wonder why our faith does not matter in our day-to-day lives. We will wonder why we do not “feel” God’s presence in us. We will wonder why our efforts to serve and minister seem fruitless, and why following Jesus is more of a chore than a blessing. We will wonder why we feel weak, and beaten down, by the everyday realities that life hurls at us.

We put the Holy Spirit away after Pentecost because we are terrified of her. Why? Because she creates chaos in our lives. She dares to ask us to give up our selfishness for servanthood. She has the audacity to request that we spend more time connecting with God, and less time connected to Wi-Fi. She has the nerve to try to tell us that our addictions are out of control, and that we need to get a grip before it is too late. She asks us to do the things that we do not want to do, and she convicts us when we choose to only live for ourselves. She creates chaos out of our nicely ordered world.

The problem comes when instead of embracing the chaos and looking for God’s hand within it, we fight against the chaos and against God’s working. We fight for our own will, and the harder we fight, the harder her wind will blow to rip apart our seams so that God’s hand can shape us into a more holy and Jesus-looking child.

In confession I can share that I like order, I want control. But I am also learning to be mindful that oftentimes the Spirit is both the creator of chaos, as well as the solution to chaos. She is not content with the status quo nature of my life, or of my discipleship, and will therefore do whatever is necessary to move me toward becoming the person God created me to be. And she will do it through wind or through fire, or whatever other mode of baptism I may need to be cleansed and redirected toward deeper companionship with the Triune God. And she does the same for you.

What sort of chaos is brewing for you? Where can you see God’s hand in both creating and calming the chaos? This Pentecost, do not just invite the Holy Spirit to fall, making a transient visit. Instead, invite her to dwell in you, to remain in you and to bring both her chaos and her calm to your life.

New Short-term Sunday school class this summer!

Do you have questions about what Christianity has to say about animals? Will you see Fido in heaven? Do you care deeply about animals and their welfare but are unsure how faith connects your concern with God’s concern? Then we invite you to be a part of a new six-week Sunday school class beginning Sunday, July 9th at 9:30 a.m. Led by Stefanie Riley, this class will take a look at the role of Christianity in the care for animals using a combination of Bible study, videos, and messages from other

leaders of the faith. If you are not already connected to a Sunday school class, and you love animals, then this will be a great opportunity for a bit of summer spiritual formation!

Planning Your Legacy

Creating named Endowments:

The United Methodist Foundation allows a donor to direct their funds to support their church, its ministries, clergy training, student scholarships, etc. These funds can be named to honor a

pastor, a teacher, a parent, a child, or a family member. The purpose is to provide for our next generation of ministries and leaders. Our Grants Committee oversees disbursements of these funds based on the criteria set forth by the donor. Endowment Funds provide for future opportunities for growth and mission.

Scholarship funds help provide for our next generation of United Methodist clergy, diaconal ministers and Christian educators. Scholarships can be set up to honor or memorialize loved ones who’ve been an inspiration to others. Scholarships can ease the burden on the student providing assistance with tuition and books, providing relief for any student who faces huge debt following graduation and upon entering into ministry. An endowment that provides scholarship funds that will be used to shape the life of one servant who will in turn shape the life of many, is a tangible way to fulfill our calling to “Follow Jesus and Make Disciples for the Transformation of the World.”

Endowments can be funded during one’s lifetime or through an estate gift. For more information about making a planned gift to fund an endowment, contact your Permanent Endowment and Special Gifts Committee by calling the church office at 910-579-5753

Your Worship Team is working on a duties, responsibilities, and servers booklet or manual, to keep all team members well informed and to help make our worship experience praise worthy for our Lord. All members of our Worship Team are providing valuable input to enhance knowledge and information, which can be shared by others. We are grateful for those serving in this congregation under the leadership of team members. The Spiritual Gifts of each member

are evident when we examine the responsibilities each member fulfills. Blessings and thanks for what is being accomplished here at Seaside. We are all trying to make our worship experience

better and more pleasing to God. Carrie Wiles—Worship

The final session of the winter/spring GriefShare cycle ended with a beautiful balloon release, followed by meaningful discussion and goodbyes. Some of the comments from our participants were:

• “I felt so alone in my sorrow before coming to GriefShare. It has also strengthened my faith, knowing that I am not traveling this road alone. He is always with me.”

• “The program has helped me understand and cope with grief much better.”

• “At first, I was doubtful that a GriefShare group could help me. But thought I would give it a try. I am glad that I did, I seemed to blend right in with a wonderful group of women…”

• “I feel that I’m not the only one who has suffered a horrible loss.”

• “They taught me a lot about coping with my loss, plus I’ve made many new, wonderful friends.” If you are suffering from grief due to the loss of a loved one, prayerfully consider joining GriefShare at our next 13 week

cycle in the fall. You will be welcomed by others who have experienced and understand the pain of grief. GriefShare will begin on Friday, September 8th, 2017. For more information, contact Jim McNeill 910 579-2405 (Home) or 910-393-9548 (Cell phone).
