INTRODUCTIONThis book contains the Youth level (2-year-old to grade 5) curriculum for God’s Love Story.

This is Part Three of the three-part quarterly curriculum.

Enough content is provided to allow the instructors to teach in a single session (Sunday mornings, typically) or in two classes (adding a mid-week Bible class). In general, our goal was to give you “more than enough” material, no matter the approach you desired to use. It is up to the instructor to pick and choose what material to cover given his teaching style and time provided.

The curriculum parallels the teaching material for the other age levels, giving everyone the opportunity to cover the same material each week.

May God bless each of you as you seek His will and strive to find your own place in God’s Love Story.

EXPLANATION OF THE CURRICULUM

GOD’S LOVE STORY – 2-YEAR-OLD TO 5th GRADE CURRICULUM

HOW TO USE THIS CURRICULUM:

Memory Verse:Throughout this curriculum, you will see memory verses for each chapter. The underlined portion is the suggested memory work for most readers, including children. The entire passage may be looked at as a “theme verse” that goes well with the chapter material and may also be used as a “challenge memorization” for those who wish to take on this longer passage.

Virtue:In each chapter of God’s Love Story, we will point out a virtue or life lesson that summarizes or can be pulled from the text.

Poster:Each week, a new poster will be revealed, which contains a simple image designed to help you remember a key event, person, or theme of the chapter. In this way, viewing all 39 posters over time will allow you visually to gain a “mental timeline” of the story of the Bible.

Major Points in the Chapter:“Major Points” is simply the lesson for the chapter in a numbered format (this could be taught in one or two class periods). Each chapter is presented to expand the children’s understanding of the Bible and the chapter’s theme. All you need to do is teach the “major points” and incorporate the other materials with lots of excitement and encouragement

* Picture Cards

Each week, a new picture card will be revealed, which contains a simple image designed to help youremember a key event, person, or theme of the chapter. In this way, viewing all 39 picture cards overtime will allow you visually to gain a “mental timeline” of the story of the Bible.

* Timeline

This timeline worksheet shows your students the progression of several commonly known stories andevents through the Bible.

The pictures are shown in an alternating pattern, varying from the top to bottom of the page. On the opposite tile is the description of the event and the approximate time period in which it occurred.

We suggest you display the timeline worksheet where the children can see the timeline and review the events previously discussed. When the 39 weeks of lessons are completed, the students will be able to see the chronological order of the Bible through the timeline worksheets.

Suggested Activity Pages:Each chapter of God’s Love Story is a plan incorporating a variety of activities focused on the chapter’s theme. These activity pages, located behind each chapter plan, will give you a variety of activities for various age levels. Some of the pages you will find are in conjunction with the “Major Points.” Each “Major Point” will have a Summary/Color Page containing a summary of the story on one side and a picture you can show the children on the other side. These can be used for the teacher and/or for the children to take home.

Timeline

This timeline worksheet shows your students the progression of several commonly known stories and events through the Bible.

The pictures are shown in an alternating pattern, varying from the top to bottom of the page. On the opposite tile is the description of the event and the approximate time period in which it occurred.

We suggest you display the timeline worksheet where the children can see the timeline and review the events previously discussed. When the 39 weeks of lessons are completed, the students will be able to see the chronological order of the Bible through the timeline worksheets.

One approach might be to cut out the pictures and connect them by a string or ribbon. You can post these on the wall of the classroom or hang them on a string, etc. There are many creative ways that you might use this timeline to convey the time period in the Bible narrative.

GOD’S LOVE STORYCHAPTER 27 – THE MASTER TEACHER

Memory Verse:“ No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve both God and Mammon” (Matthew 6:24).

Virtue: Morality (Ethical Living)

Poster:The poster for Chapter 27 shows a small boat as might have been used for fishing in the time of Jesus and His apostles. Jesus spent much time in the regions around the Sea of Galilee and often traveled by boat during His ministry. In this chapter of God’s Love Story, Jesus even commands the waves to be still.

On at least one occasion, Jesus preached from a boat, with His voice carrying across the water to the crowd. Many of the apostles were fishermen; Jesus changed them into becoming fishers of men.

Major Points:1. The Sermon on the Mount. Starting in Matthew 5, we read about Jesus preaching the greatest

sermon ever heard. Here He gives the Beatitudes plus a great deal many lessons for living (Matthew5:1-32; 5:38-48; 6:1-15; 6:19-21; 6:24-34).

2. Jesus used parables to do much of His teaching. He used terms and situations that the people werefamiliar with on a daily basis (Matthew 7:15-23; 7:24-29; 13: 1-13; 13:18-23; 13:24-50).

3. To spread His teaching even further, Jesus sent His 12 apostles out to preach, giving theminstructions as to how they should conduct themselves (Matthew 10:1; 10:5-20; 10: 38-11:1).

4. John the Baptist was put in prison by Herod because John told him he should not have his brother’swife. Later he had John beheaded (Mark 6:17-29).

* Timeline The events of God’s Love Story, Chapter 27 take place during the brief (3-year) ministry ofJesus. Dates for this are approximately 27-30 A.D.

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

VIRTUE: MoralityJesus went up on a mountain, and when He was seated, His disciples came to Him. Then He began to teach His disciples and the multitude the following: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. Blessed are merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Jesus told them many other things:

1. Be kind to one another.

2. Do not worry about what you will wear or eat.

3. God will provide just as He feeds the birds.

4. Call Him Father when you pray.

5. We are the light of the world.

6. We should seek first the kingdom of God.

THE MASTER TEACHERMark 4:1-20

THE PARABLES OF JESUS

VIRTUE: MoralityJesus began teaching a multitude of people by the sea by teaching them in parable.

Jesus said a sower went out to sow. As he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside, and the birds ate these seeds. Some seeds fell on rocks. As soon as they sprang up they withered away because they did not have enough soil. Some seeds fell into thorns and couldn’t grow. But some seeds fell on good soil. These seeds grew and multiplied. Later Jesus explained the parable to His disciples: The seeds are God’s Word. Seeds that fell by the wayside mean that some people hear God’s Word. Then Satan takes it from their heart. The seeds sown on rocks are like people who happily believe for a little while, but they have no roots and they forget God’s Word. The seeds in the thorns are like people who hear God’s Word and go their own way because their heart is full of other things. The seeds that fell in good soil are like people who hear God’s Word, accept it, obey, and tell others. Their lives are changed forever.

JESUS SENDS OUT HIS DISCIPLES

VIRTUE: MoralityJesus traveled through the countryside teaching and preaching about God and healing the sick. Crowds followed Him asking questions. Jesus knew He needed help, so He called His twelve apostles: Simon (called Peter) and his brother, Andrew; James, son of Zebedee, and his brother, John; Phillip; Bartholomew; Thomas; Matthew; James, son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus; Simon; and Judas Iscariot.

Jesus taught these 12 men about God. He gave them power to heal the sick, cast out unclean spirits, and raise the dead.

Jesus told them not to take much with them: no extra clothes, shoes, or even money. Whatever town they entered, they were to search for a worthy person and stay at his house.

Jesus told them to go and preach saying that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. They did just as Jesus told them and told many people about God.
