The Beauty of His Sovereign Design:

God’s Giftof Creativity

“Through Him, all things were made; without Him, nothing was made that has been made. In him was life and that life was the light of men.”

John 1:3-4

Created. Fashioned from the dust. Given His very breath. What a profound reality! God gave us His life and then imbedded gifts of creativity and an immense capacity for learning and discovery into our very beings. How can anything but praise flow from our lips?

It is true that if one breaks from God as their Source, creativity will be darkened and learning will become error. Therefore it is essential then that we apply a strict discipline of truth over all that we do. It is absolutely necessary that we train our thoughts to follow God’s; to learn who He is, so our thoughts and pursuits will flow in line with His will. This is the beautiful process we see in a Christ- centered classroom.

In this edition of the School Bell, you will enjoy stories and snapshots of Highland Christian School students as they engage in creative learning and expression. From Beetle Pulls to Poetry, from Space to the creatures who live in the depths of the sea, our children are growing in knowledge of both their Creator and who they are created to be. In all these things TRUTH MATTERS. How we teach them now, will form how they think tomorrow.

In our Christ-centered classrooms, we start God, our Creator and end with God, Our LORD. It is our goal that whether they grow up to design

skyscrapers or computer chips, become local or international business people, or serve to sculpt lives through human service, they will live their lives for God’s glory. And in so doing, they will be known by their love.

“This drawing I drew is to show the beauty of God’s creation and us enjoying it. It also shows how God has given man the ability to make really cool buildings.”

Becca Dauro, 8th Grade

Student Expressions

Reflecting on the theme “The Beauty of His Sovereign Design: God’s Gift of Creativity,” Mr. Brink challenged a group of Junior High students to illustrate John 1:3-4. The drawings that are featured in this School Bell are the students’ pictorial responses. Special thanks to each of them for their creative expressions.

“The reason I drew this is because God is in charge of the world, nobody else. I wanted to show how simply awesome God is! He is our friend, creator, protector, Savior, Messiah, Father and so much more!”

Challenger Space Learning CenterThe 7th graders went on a

field trip to the Challenger Space Learning Center of Northwest Indiana on November 8, 2011. We had to train a lot to prepare for this field trip. We had to work on listening skills, medical skills, construction skills, and vocabulary skills. All these skills were used on the field trip. We prepared for 2 1⁄2 weeks before going.

There were three positions: mission control, senator, and actually being in the spaceship. When in mission control, you would tell the people in the spaceship what to do. While in the spaceship, you would wait for instructions and proceed to do them on the computer. We also had senators watching us. The reason for this was to convince them to fund the space program. They ended up doing so.

All in all, it was fun. We all learned something. We used science, math, and teamwork skills. The program helped us to learn how to work together. When the room filled with gas and we almost died, we had to work together to correct the problem. It helped us with our communication skills. We had to be very specific in our communication because everyone had a part in the success of the mission. It felt kind of weird that the people in the communications room could see us on a camera when we couldn’t see them. At one point, the team had an important decision to make: save 2 men’s lives, or let them die so we could land a probe. We decided to save the men’s lives.

The seventh graders reported that this field trip was “dandy, fantabulous, and gnarly!” We think it was a good opportunity to use what we had learned about space and the scientific process. Since you can experience first-hand what astronauts witness, it is also a good way to try and get people interested in the space program. Mrs. Timmer plans the best field trips!

First Grade Gifts for Baby Jesus“They fell to the ground and worshipped Him. Then opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11. This verse is about some wise men who visited Jesus when he was a young child and brought Him special gifts.

Gold is a gift fit for a King. Jesus was born to be our King.

Frankincense is a precious gift for a priest. Jesus is our High Priest, our mediator between God and man.

Myrrh is a precious perfume used to anoint a body at death. Jesus had come to die.

The first graders reflected on this story of the wise men and their gifts for Jesus. They offered more ideas of what they would have given baby Jesus.

I would give baby Jesus... ...a baby crib that he could sleep in. - Donny

...kisses. - Isaac

...a warm blanket. - Zachary

...an angel tree. - Elijah

...a bottle of warm milk. - Christopher

...a cell phone. - Caleb W.

...one thousand dollars. - Nico

...soft clothes. - Mandie

...all my love. - Ivy

...a guitar. - Tyler

...a nice picture. What would you give Jesus? Think about it. - Audrey

...a sparkling crown. - Jaedyn

...a colorful ball. - Abbie

...tiny shoes. - Anthony

...a cozy quilt. - Arie

...gold. - Caleb I.

...a hug. - Megan

...a Christmas book. What would you give? - Cameron

...a toy truck. - Marley

...a bunny to play with. - Cassie

...my heart. - Bradleigh

We are glad God gave us the perfect gift, his Son, Jesus Christ.

What’s Popping in the Primary Department!CHARLOTTE’S WEB

Students in kindergarten through second grade were privileged to attend Charlotte’s Web, as presented by Illiana Christian High School. This was an excellent opportunity to enjoy the creative abilities God has given us and to learn many things. Before we went, we wondered how they’d write words in the web and where they’d get all the baby spiders. (If you are wondering, too, they used bubbles!) We talked about many ways we can use our talents in the future, what it takes to turn a book into a play and how to participate as an audience member. When we went, we were amazed by the fantastic sets, loved how the students became animals and had an enjoyable time discovering the answers to our questions.

WORLD VISIONJesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” We talked

about this and decided to partner with World Vision instead of exchanging Christmas gifts in our classrooms. With your help, we collected $626.00 to purchase animals for families in Third World countries. We were very happy to give up our gifts so others could have animals to help provide for their families.

BOOK-IT!We know that reading increases vocabulary and reading

proficiency, so our primary students are involved in Book-it! Each month the children read, or have read to them, a certain number of books set by their teachers. If they meet their goal for the month, they receive a coupon for a free pizza at Pizza Hut. Our students are doing a great job! Keep up the good reading!!

God’s Remarkable CreaturesOn November 11, the second graders took an exciting field trip to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago! The field

trip was much anticipated and lived up to its expectations. The second graders saw many amazing animals that God created. Among these animals were a giant Pacific sea cucumber, a spider crab, green moray eels, paddlefish, mantilla frogs, seahorses, river otters, and even an anaconda! The students, their teachers, and their chaperones talked about the different ways in which these animals moved and what made the animals special. The field trip was a great success and everyone left with special memories and more knowledge about God’s remarkable creatures!

“I drew this to show creativity and imagination.”

PoetryIn the spring of the 2010-2011 school year, the fourth

grade classes of Mrs. Jabaay and Mrs. Wagenaar worked on writing poetry. At the end of the unit, each child chose what they felt was their best piece. These works were submitted in a contest given by The American Library of Poetry. Four of our students had their work published in the book, Acclaimed. These students, now fifth graders, are Matthew Fulton, Hannah Last, Tori Ruffolo, and Emma Stevens. Congratulations!

The Beetle PullThe third graders had the opportunity to learn about

plants, crayfish, and beetles in our new FOSS science curriculum. The new curriculum is very hands-on, so they got to open seeds to see what’s inside, plant bean plants hydroponically, and handle live crayfish and beetles that were living in our classroom. The third graders loved to watch the crayfish behaviors. One of their favorite beetle activities was the beetle pull. We loosely tied dental floss around the beetles and hooked on paper clips to see how many each beetle could pull. The beetle weighs about 1-2 paper clips, but had the strength to pull up to 40! The plants and animals we studied were amazing, and God’s creativity and design were evident.

3rd Grade Mission Sale

In December, Grade 3 held a mission sale to benefit New Community, an outreach in Thailand, and Hearts in Motion, an outreach in Hondurus. They sold a large quantity of beaded animals from South Africa, some earrings, purses and bags (mostly to moms). The students managed the huge crowd well and raised over $900.00!!

In November, all junior high students participated in a spelling bee. Emily Blink and Marissa Montalvo were the winners in 6th grade,

Jacob Thompson and Melanie VanTil in 7th grade, and Aaron Knapper and Arianna Mayo in 8th grade. Between the six champions, Melanie VanTil won and will be representing Highland Christian School at the Lake/Porter district competition. A big round of applause for all!

The Ten LepersHighland Christian School has great traditions! One of our traditions

is to show thankfulness for God’s blessings through the act of sharing with others during the Thanksgiving season. Once again, our donation tables were full of donated food, paper goods, and gently used clothing items. The generous donations that represented our plenty would soon become tangible blessings for those in need through our ongoing partnership with Beacon Light Food Pantry in Gary and Roseland Christian Ministries, Roseland, IL. Our guests, Gladys Smith (Beacon Light) and Joe Huizenga (RCM),shared some examples of how their ministries had helped others throughout the year. They were thrilled with our gifts and thanked us for helping them to help others. This was the first of two pictures we focused on during our Thanksgiving Chapel.

The second picture was the story of the Ten Lepers told in two ways. Eleven students from Mrs. Otte’s first grade class told us the Biblical narrative. These students each did a great job with their part of the story: Cameron Evers, Marley Huizenga, Jaedyn Long, Arie DeYoung, Zach Hart, Christopher Kinkade, Donny Woo, Audrey Yonkman, Abbie Van Kley, and Mandie Van Kley.

After they told the story, Nico Sytsma asked, “What might this story look like today?” To answer this question we watched a modern retelling of the same story. This video skit, cast in 2006 by some of our current 8th grade students, featured ten HCS students who had itchy, red spots. One day Jesus healed them and the spots went away. When asked by a news reporter what they planned to do next, they answered: “Read an AR book!” “Go shopping!” “Go to Disney World!” Only one said “Thank Jesus for healing me”.

These pictures were a great reminder to always give thanks first. Following our concluding prayer Mrs. Huizenga’s fifth grade class enthusiastically loaded two truckloads full of donations! Thanks to everyone who donated items, participated in chapel, and helped load the trucks!

Planetariumby Joshua Boender

When we went to the Planetarium, I was surprised at how much information on Mars they put into our short trip. I loved it and I think all the other students did, too. When we got there, they took us right to the room and started the presentation and video on Mars. Since we were in the Mars unit in Science class, we knew a lot of the information but some of it was new to us. I also think the students and staff that ran the show did a great job. For the time we had there, they taught us a lot and even more than was scheduled because we listened well. We had a lot of fun and if I get the chance, I would love to go back.

On November 18, sixteen stu-dents from HCS headed to South-west Christian School in Oak Lawn to participate in the 9th Annual 3rd -6th Grade Math Triathlon. The event is sponsored by Trinity Chris-tian College. The participants from HCS were: Emily Feikema, Simon Molenaar, Fletcher Bandstra, Tristan Buder, Tenia Phillips, Lauren Woo, Eddie Spoelman, Olivia DeYoung, Nathan Oh, Dylan Vander Woude, Heidi Bultema, Julia Oostema, Ben Johnson, Emily Blink, Andrew Feikema, and Collin Bultema. The team was chaperoned by Mrs. Ali Buder and Mrs. Anne Spoelman.

The triathlon included a few different events. First, the students took an individual test made up of twenty questions. Then, the students joined together with a team of four HCS students and took a team test. The team test is made up of five questions. Following the team test, the students participated in an activity with all the students from all the schools. The last event of the day was a relay event. The Highland students participated as a team and had to answer questions as quickly as possible.

The day concluded with an awards assembly. Highland Christian was awarded fifth place! Congratulations to all the students who came along! They did a great job representing Highland Christian School!

CheerleadingThe cheerleading team had an excellent season this year. The

girls worked very hard and really brought everything together at season’s end. The girls helped create sideline and intermission routines and even learned a few basic stunt formations. They cheered at nearly every 8th grade basketball home game and even a few away games. One of the highlights of our season was cheering at the 8th grade basketball tournament at Illiana where we got to cheer and watch the boys win the championship. I’m so proud of all these girls, who each have a bright future in cheerleading. Team members were: Raena Bass, Da’Yna Whitehead, Destini Pimental, Danielle Porter, Lauren Amatulli, Christina Camp, and Ellie Matiscik. - Coach Chris Vander Wall

sports7th Grade Girls’ Basketball

The 7th grade girls’ basketball season was filled with learning and was focused on enjoying the game and improving fundamentals. We faced some very tough competition this year, but the girls always kept their heads up and never got down on themselves or each other. It was awesome to watch the aggressiveness with which the girls played and how they gave it their all in each game and practice. We finished the year strong at the DeMotte Tournament, especially in the Free Throw Competition. Carla Lopez, Avrey Riemersma, Tori Terpstra and Emily Blink were all finalists in the Individual Free Throw Competition, and Emily finished in third place. I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching this great group of girls who have such positive attitudes and bright basketball futures. The 7th grade players this year were: Eden Schipper, Carla Lopez, Tiffany Ketelaar, Avery Riemersma, Vanesa Huizenga and Elyse Dunham. We also pulled up three 6th graders to help complete our team, who were: Tori Terpstra, Sarah Kuiper and Emily Blink. - Coach Dana Poortenga

6th Grade Girls’ BasketballWith 10 girls, most of which was their first time playing

the game of basketball, the 6th grade girls’ season was one of starting with the fundamentals and learning the basics of the game. The girls made huge improvements in both their knowledge of the sport, as well as their basketball skills. Defense was the name of our game and we knew that the shots would eventually fall. Several of the games came down to a couple points in the final minutes and even going into overtime against Calvin. We ended the season with a 4-5 record and came 4th in the tournament. The girls showed great intensity and aggressiveness! We were extremely proud of their positive attitudes, as well as their hard work and vast improvement this season. The girls had good chemistry as a team and we had a lot of fun. It was a wonderful group of girls and we had great parent support this season. Awesome season, girls!

Team members were: Emily Blink, Kenna Crowel, Nascha Hladek, Sarah Kuiper, Cassie Laninga, Emily Montalvo, Marissa Montalvo, Tori Terpstra, Anna Thompson, & Rachel Wilcox. - Coaches Jori Leeson & Mary Mitchell

8th Grade Girls’ BasketballThe 8th grade girls had a successful season this year. The

girls committed themselves to learning the game, improving their skills, and playing well as a team. I can proudly say that the girls achieved all of those goals this season. Despite the fact that wins were very hard to come by this season, the girls had a great time playing basketball and they were a joy to coach. The highlight of our season came in two parts. The girls did not play their best game and lost to Oak Lawn by one point at home. The girls knew they could play better and committed themselves to doing just that each day in practice. It showed at the end of the season where the girls really came on strong and capped it of by beating Oak Lawn on their home court. Each of these girls has a future in basketball and I look forward to seeing where the game takes each of them. Team members were: Mikinsey Pruim, Emily Otte, Emma Spoelman, LaTanya Gaiser, Lorna DeWindt, Elyssa Patricks, Sarah Parrish and Anneke Brummel. - Coach Dana Poortenga

7th Grade Boys’ BasketballThe 7th grade basketball season began with tryouts in October. After

2 weeks of conditioning and practice, we began our season on a losing note against Lansing Christian. Our next game took us on the road against DeMotte Christian, winning by 14 points. We finished November with a .500 record and in December we played our best ball of the year, winning 4 games in a row and showing great improvement as a team.

The season ended at DeMotte for the 34th Annual 7th Grade Boys’ Basketball Tournament. Our win over Crown Point gave us a ticket to the championship game against DeMotte. DeMotte went out to an early lead, but we took a two-point lead, with four minutes left to play and made some

key free throws to secure the 1st place trophy. The team and individual free throw competition took place before the championship game. HCS was represented in the individual competition by Bo Hofstra, Jak Klapak, Jacob Mulderink and Jacob Thompson. The Huskies won the team event and Bo Hofstra took first in the individual division.

It was a privilege to coach these young men and see them grow and improve in so many ways. Thank you to the parents, Assistant Coach Jeff Thompson, Mr. Van Dyke, and our team mom, Joanne Johnson. Finally, thanks to Rick Dykstra, who graciously arranges the time off for me to coach.

This year’s Huskies are: Josh Boender, Tim Hoeksema, Bo Hofstra, Michael Johnson, Jared Jonkman, Jak Klapak, Jacob Mulderink, Norman Standish, Malik Strong, and Jacob Thompson. - Coach Jonkman

6th Grade Boys’ BasketballThe sixth grade boys had a fun season full of ups and downs. The

team started off with a loss at Lansing Christian, but then rebounded with two straight wins at home against DeMotte and Crown Point. The sixth graders were home warriors, only losing twice on their home court. The boys learned how to play as a team throughout the season and learned how important teamwork is to a successful basketball team. Each member of the team improved his skills and fundamentals throughout the season and worked very hard during practices to make himself better. The season ended with the boys taking second place in the tournament held at HCS. Although the season didn’t end with the boys hoisting the trophy, we are very proud of each one of them for the effort and hard work put into every game and practice. Thanks for a great season, players and parents! Team members were: Noah Vander Woude, Ryan Rudenga, Ben Johnson, Kyle Zuidema, CJ Lineburg, Collin Bultema, Jaylin Brantley, Maurice Sullivan, Carlos Lopez, Tylor Torres, Nathan De Vries. - Coach Jon and Coach Tim

8th Grade Boys’ BasketballThank you to all the players, parents, grandparents, teachers, scorekeepers, helpers and fans for another fun and successful hoops

season. We appreciate the outstanding support at all the home and away games and the commitment by the parents and players. We are truly blessed to be a part of the HCS community.

Throughout the year, our boys responded to all challenges and completed a perfect season with 15 wins and no losses, including winning the 8th Grade Championship at Illiana Christian. The team played an outstanding tournament and can now celebrate finishing the last three years with 42 wins and 2 losses. Congratulations, guys – you were an amazing and fun group to coach! We know why we play this game – To Glorify God!

Once again, it was a pleasure coaching and mentoring these guys and watching them develop as Christian student athletes. We challenged our players to grow as Christians, to develop character, to show passion for God and to glorify Him in all things, including basketball.

friends in action

I never dreamt that I would be working at etc... a resale marketplace, but boy do I love it! My name is Kathy Yonkman. I am the most recent etc... staff member and a Highland Christian School parent. I have four children. The oldest three are grown and on their own. Between them, I have 5 wonderful grandchildren! My youngest child, Taylor, currently attends HCS.

When my mom died, a friend suggested that I start volunteering at etc... a resale marketplace. They thought it would be a good help to me while I grieved the loss of my dear mother. My daughter was in school, I was unemployed and running into dead ends in my hunt for a job. I felt the walls were closing in on me. I needed to get out of a “self” focus and give service. So I took their advice and started volunteering.

Honestly, when I started volunteering, I just wanted to keep structure in my day. I had only been in etc... once. Before that, I had NEVER been in a resale store! I wasn’t against them. I just had never gone.

When I walked into etc... a resale marketplace, I found there were people I knew who volunteered there; friends of mine and customers I knew! It felt so warm and inviting! The store itself looked like a RETAIL store!

So I started volunteering. Every day, after completing my job search for the day, I would head over to etc.... I was given specific, routine jobs to do: first jewelry, then purses. More and more I was running the register because the store is often short of cashiers. I felt valued. I needed that, especially at that time in my life.

When they offered me a job, I felt so blessed and humbled. This was a great opportunity they trusted me with. I like doing a little bit of everything. And that is just what I can do in a store like etc...! I look forward to going to work every day. The large core of faithful volunteers is like an extended family. We share in each other’s troubles and celebrate together when prayers are answered. God used this community as a blessing to my daughter and me when my Dad

passed away suddenly, just 5 months after I lost my mom.

Right now, our Snow Bird volunteers are enjoying warmer weather. These volunteers put regular hours in each week so their absence is felt! If your four walls are closing in on you this winter or you just want to have some fun (and you WILL!!) come on out to etc... a resale marketplace! Volunteer for a short bit and you will be blessed more than you can imagine!

Epilogue as reported by Kathy’s daughter, Taylor Bapst,HCS Student, grade 5

I feel so blessed to know I have another family at etc...! I love them very much. They look out for my mom. That matters to me. etc... a resale marketplace is more than a business that raises money for Highland Christian School. It is a home. The people are not just co-workers. They are a family. WE are a family: a family who works together and experiences happiness, laughter, joy, love and relationship. I thank God for blessing my mom and me this way.
