God's CallingGod's CallingLeviticus 25:1-17 The LORD said to Moses at Mount Sinai, 2
"Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the LORD. 3 For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops. 4 But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the LORD. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards. 5 Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines.
God's CallingGod's CallingLeviticus 25:1-17The land is to have a year of rest. 6 Whatever
the land yields during the sabbath year will be food for you--for yourself, your male and female servants, and the hired worker and temporary resident who live among you, 7 as well as for your livestock and the wild animals in your land. Whatever the land produces may be eaten. 8 "'Count off seven sabbath years--seven times seven years--so that the seven sabbath years amount to a period of forty-nine years. 9 Then have the trumpet sounded
God's CallingGod's CallingLeviticus 25:1-17everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh
month; on the Day of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout your land. 10 Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan. 11 The fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; do not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the untended vines. 12 For it is a jubilee and is to be holy for you;
God's CallingGod's CallingLeviticus 25:1-17eat only what is taken directly from the fields. 13
"'In this Year of Jubilee everyone is to return to their own property. 14 "'If you sell land to any of your own people or buy land from them, do not take advantage of each other. 15 You are to buy from your own people on the basis of the number of years since the Jubilee. And they are to sell to you on the basis of the number of years left for harvesting crops. 16 When the years are many, you are to increase the price, and when the years are
God's CallingGod's CallingLeviticus 25:1-17few, you are to decrease the price, because
what is really being sold to you is the number of crops. 17 Do not take advantage of each other, but fear your God. I am the LORD your God.

The first words in Leviticus are… The LORD called to Moses…
The Hebrew word for “the Lord called” became the title of the book of
Leviticus. Today we call the book Leviticus after the tribe of Levi, from
whence came the priesthood.

God's CallingGod's CallingExodus 20:8-11 8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it
holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner resid-ing in your towns. 11For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy
God's CallingGod's Calling
The sabbath was a day for the people to rest from their work in order to honor God. Just like they
donated their treasures to the tabernacle, so they dedicated their time for God and family.
Jewish people today (and some Christians) still keep the Sabbath.
God's CallingGod's Calling
In Leviticus God set forth the Sabbath year.
The Sabbath year was a time when the Israelites would let the land rest instead of working the
land.
God's CallingGod's CallingLeviticus 25 The LORD said to Moses at Mount Sinai, 2
"Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the LORD. 3 For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops. 4 But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the LORD.
God's CallingGod's Calling
God would provide for what they need in the sixth year- enough for
three years.
God designed the sabbath because He wanted the people to honor God and because He loved them. God knew they would need some rest.
God's CallingGod's Calling
The 50th year they moved into the land would be a year of Jubilee
The word for “jubilee” came from the sound of the trumpet made of sheep’s horn that resounded on the beginning of this year.
God's CallingGod's CallingLeviticus 25 10 Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim
liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan. 11 The fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; do not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the untended vines. 12 For it is a jubilee and is to be holy for you; eat only what is taken directly from the fields. 13 "'In this Year of Jubilee everyone is to return to their own property.
God's CallingGod's Calling
On the year of Jubilee all land is returned to it’s original owner
and all Israelite slaves are free.
God made these mandates because He loved people-
individual people- and He want to protect against the rich lording
over the poor.
God's CallingGod's CallingLeviticus 25 17 Do not take advantage of each other,
but fear your God. I am the LORD your God. 18 "'Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, and you will live safely in the land. 19 Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live there in safety.
God's CallingGod's Calling
The main purpose for the year of jubilee was to remind the
Israelites of the most important principle of all:
Everything they have is from God.

Leviticus 25 23 "'The land must not be sold
permanently, because the land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers.

We learn from the year of Jubilee that…The people celebrated the arrival of Jubilee
This was a year of health and healing. This was a year people found freedom.
This was a year the land rested from toil. This was a year all debts were paid in full.
God's CallingGod's Calling
We cannot properly understand the New Testament without a basic
understanding of the Old Testament.
Jesus brought Jubilee to the people when He entered Jerusalem.
God's CallingGod's Calling
On Palm Sunday…The people celebrated the arrival of
JesusThey hoped for healing and health. They hoped for political freedom. They hoped for a rest from toil.
They hoped for a King who would pay their debts in full.
God's CallingGod's Calling
Jesus was coming to give them…A suffering Servant they would reject.
He came to give them healing and health.
He came to give them spiritual freedom. He came to ultimately give them a final
rest from this earthly toil.He came to pay their spiritual debts in
full.
God's CallingGod's CallingJohn 12: 12-13; 16 12 The next day the great crowd that had
come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna! " "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the king of Israel!”… 16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
God's CallingGod's Calling
What did they come to understand?
What did they realize?Perhaps they remembered back to
when Jesus began His ministry and proclaimed the freedom He
would bring:
God's CallingGod's CallingLuke 4:16-1916 He went to Nazareth, where he had been
brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.“
God's CallingGod's Calling
What was Isaiah referring to?
Isaiah was looking forward to a day when the Messiah would
bring a year of jubilee- of freedom and healing- for the
people of Israel.
God's CallingGod's Calling
In Hebrews the writer equates a Sabbath-rest with creation and with the children of Israel taking the land
in Numbers 14.
If the people had trusted God and conquered the land, they would
have had rest. They disobeyed God and wandered through the
wilderness.
God's CallingGod's Calling
We, too, can experience the healing, freedom, and rest the Israelites experienced if we will
trust and obey in the Lord.
God's CallingGod's CallingHebrews 4:8-11 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God
would not have spoken later about another day. 9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.
God's CallingGod's CallingThe writer of Hebrews says we are
entering into a Sabbath-rest?What is the Sabbath-rest for the
writer?Inheriting salvationBeing led to glory
Entering the inner side of the curtainArriving at the better, heavenly homeland
Arriving at the city to comeReceiving the Unshakable Kingdom
God's CallingGod's Calling
Whatever the writer means by Sabbath-rest, it sounds good.
Let us trust and rest in the Lord Jesus Christ, and in doing so we
will have Jubilee.
