Amos replies that this isn’t his day job or even his choice — he is responding to God’s call to prophecy. While Amos isn’t silenced by this rejection, we don’t learn what happens to him next. Does the high priest resort to more drastic measures to get rid of him? Is Amos imprisoned, deported or even killed? (Continued on page 3) Welcome to St. Agnes Catholic Church! On the Inside... Even with all the available advice about finding your God-given vocation, it’s hard to be absolutely certain you’ve gotten it right. Why can’t God just directly and clearly tell us what to do? often. Thanks everyone. Going away is great, but coming home is even better. A break gives us new eyes and energy for the tasks at hand. One of the tasks is to inform everyone that now is the time to register for St. Agnes School, St. Agnes/St. Kieran Religious Education Program, and the RCIA program. So often people wait to the end and then miss out. Especially with the Religious Education program, we limit the students enrolled based on the number of teachers we have. The same holds true for the school. If you choose to wait, it is not our fault when there is no room. So register now! The RCIA program also is taking people now for the fall. Sometimes it is an upcoming wedding that makes people look to receiving sacraments. For others it is something that they couldn’t do when they were young, but now it makes sense. If you know anyone who would like to join the church and receive Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation they should call Carol Brothers at St. Agnes, or Joe Sopron at St. Kieran. Classes meet weekly starting in September and participants receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil. Once again, don’t delay...call for information today. The Adoration Chapel at St. Agnes is also going well. The chapel is open seven days a week from 8:00 AM until 8 PM. If you have any questions about the chapel, please see the names and phone numbers listed in the bulletin. Thanks to all of the coordinators and adorers. Finally, thanks to everyone who continues to fulfill their pledges to the Teach Who Christ Is Campaign. Your dedication will make our next projects a reality. For St. Keiran it will be a new sign on Halsted Street. For St. Agnes we are getting ready to repair and repaint the church, along with some work on the Altar and Ambo platforms. This will be a combo TWCI and insurance project. Our new roofs were already done thanks to the success of the TTWCI campaign. Thanks again everyone!

When we read biblical stories like these, we realize how terrifying it could be not to have any excuse to “mishear” our call. We recognize what we might have to leave behind and that our safety and success aren’t guaranteed. Maybe it’s not the lack of clear instructions that stops us from following God’s call, but the suspicion of what God might call us to do. It’s easier to convince ourselves we’re supposed take the comfortable and secure path. Yet, as Paul reminds us in today’s second reading, God’s will for us is a mystery, but also a blessing. While God’s plan may frighten us, it is still the source of our hope; God wants something better for us than we could ever plan for ourselves. Through their trust in Jesus, the apostles were able to drive out demons and cure the sick. And while Amos’ call to let “justice surge like waters, and righteousness like an unfailing stream” (5:24) was ignored by ancient Israel, it was heard thousands of years later when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. quoted it in his “I Have a Dream” speech. There are many times when we have to make hard choices and engage in discernment, but on a basic level, we know what we’re called to do. The Bible and our faith tradition are full of guidance on what God asks of us. Like Amos, we’re called to denounce injustice, even when it’s unpopular. Like the apostles, we’re called to offer healing to others, even if we may be rejected. We can also hear God’s call on a more personal level, when we are suddenly faced with a situation where our gifts and talents are needed, feel drawn to a particular cause, or receive an invitation or a cry for help from another person. And, of course, we can always strive to be more attuned to God’s voice through prayer. Whatever the means, God’s call will come. We can choose to follow where it leads, knowing that ultimately, God’s plan can only be for good.

Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. — Psalm 85:12

Discipleship

CALLED BY GOD Today’s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the LORD to the prophet Amos, the “shepherd and a dresser of sycamores” (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out “two by two” (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were baptized. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God “destined us for adoption” (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through God’s living word. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the time of the Reformation, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent major-ity clung to the Catholic faith. Henry’s eldest daughter, Mary, restored the “old religion” in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called “Bloody Mary” for good reason.) His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called “recusants,” from a Latin word meaning “refuse,” since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their descendants claim “Recusancy” as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daugh-ters of patrician English recusant families. Port Tobacco, Maryland, proved fruitful soil for the Carmelite tradition. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GOD IN ALL In everything, be it a thing sensed, or a thing known, God is hidden within. —St. Bonaventure

Many of us grew up to the sound of our mother’s voice say-ing “Use the back door when you come into the house!” The front door was for guests, a special entrance for our family and friends. The glass front doors in the vestibule of the church (entering by baptismal font) are our special entrance and should be used by all of us entering the church for mass or services. The side doors by the piano and the statue of Mary are re-served for those with special needs as an entrance and exit, and are not intended for use when entering or leaving the church. If for some reason there is a need to leave church during a mass or service, please use the glass doors at the back of the church by the baptismal font.
