The Community Rescue Mission, located at 4th and F Street, phone 479-782-1443, partners with area churches to meet spiritual and physical needs by providing meals, a place to stay, and church services. We thank everyone who helped with the “Mission for Apples Fundraiser.” The Mission has received a grant from the Walton Foundation to help purchase computers, a projector, and a screen. These will be used for educational purposes and to help clients apply for jobs.
Please be in prayer for the homeless and those that work to help them.
Thanks, Harry Tommey

Health Ministry Article – January 2018
Submitted by Paula Andrews, RN, BSN
January is Glaucoma Awareness Month
According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, more than 3 million people in the United States currently have glaucoma. Glaucoma is called the “sneak thief of sight” since there are no symptoms and once vision is lost, it’s permanent. As much as 40% of vision can be lost without a person noticing.
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of irreversible blindness according to the World Health Organization. With the aging population looming, we must raise awareness about the importance of regular eye exams to preserve vision. Early detection is vital to stopping the progress of the disease.
There are two main types of glaucoma: primary open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. These are marked by an increase of intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye). Vision loss is caused by damage to the optic nerve. This nerve acts like an electric cable with over a million wires. It is responsible for carrying images from the eye to the brain. When optic nerve damage has occurred, despite a normal intraocular pressure, this is called normal tension glaucoma. Secondary glaucoma refers to any case in which another disease causes or contributes to increased eye pressure resulting in optic nerve damage and vision loss.
Vision loss begins with peripheral vision. So, you may not notice anything right away. Are you at risk? Those at higher risk include: people of African, Asian and Hispanic descent. Also: people over the age of 60, family members of those already diagnosed, diabetics, and people who are severely near-sighted.
Regular exams are the best way to protect your sight. You can also help raise awareness. Talk to friends and family about glaucoma. Refer anyone interested in more information to see their eye doctor and/or offer the website www.glaucoma.org.

News from our Food Pantry Ministry Submitted by Elizabeth Eubanks
Because of your generosity and loving Inside-Out Spirit, we were able to give away 102 turkeys and food bags in
December. This food alone served 514 people. We also gave away 157 bags of groceries through our Food Pantry
during December. Although our Pantry was closed during the Christmas weeks to allow our faithful Goddard Pantry
Volunteers to have time with their families, we continued to serve people who came to our church for food thanks to our
wonderful Goddard Office Staff who handed out bags to people during that time. During the time the pantry was closed,
our office staff gave away 34 bags. No one who came for food was turned away. Thanks be to God!
Thank you to each of you who so generously gave to support this ministry and to those of you who so lovingly worked to
prepare and distribute the turkeys and food bags. Thank you Mary Beth Sudduth for your leadership again this year.
Thank you to Don Holland who picked up and unloaded the groceries. Thank you to Roger Ross, Phil Woodard, Gregg
Teece, and Mike Mankin for picking up and unloading the turkeys.
Goddard Christmas Ministry Day was awesome! We had many nice toys donated to help families provide Christmas
gifts to their children and grandchildren.
In addition, the University of Arkansas Fort Smith donated three large bags full of stuffed animals to us. Thank you to
Dr. Paul Beran and the UAFS staff for including Goddard as one of the beneficiaries of your annual Toy Drive. Those
stuffed animals and the other toys will bring so many smiles to children on Christmas morning.
Thank you to Gil Lewis for continuing to donate to our Food Pantry. We included those cookies and cakes in our
Christmas Gifts to people who came on Goddard Christmas Ministry Day.
Goddard Food Pantry has been a blessing to so many this year…. can’t wait to see what even greater
things God has for us in 2018!
Goddard United Methodist Women Submitted by Elizabeth Eubanks
In December, we hosted the Fort Smith Retired Teachers Luncheon. This endeavor requires many of our
Goddard Ladies to use their talents and time! Thanks to Betty Forrest and Fern Daniel for their creative table settings
and decorations. Thank you to Diann Ishmael for heading up our incredibly talented cooking team who provided a
delicious meal. Thanks to Barbara Kell, Jean Woodward, Sheila Geren, Sissie Mankin, Suzie Dunn, Elizabeth Eubanks,
Fern Daniel, Carol McAlister, Karen Baker, Mary Margaret Gattis and Mary Beth Sudduth for the delicious desserts.
Thank you to these women and to Sharon Freeman, Pat Singleton, Betty Morkemo, Marilyn Scheuble, Jan Bowden,
Mary Beth Sudduth, Mary Margaret Gattis, Jeannie Holland, Sandy Johnson, and Gayle Tindall for the work you did to
help prepare for this luncheon and to complete the cleanup work. Thank you to Don Holland for setting up all the tables
and chairs. Thank you to Mary Cauthron for lending us all your Christmas mugs. (See related pictures on page 3.)
We look forward to 2018 and more good things happening! We will continue to provide support for Hub of
Hope, STEPS, Heifer International, Community Rescue Mission, InterFaith Preschool, the Ronald McDonald Rooms for
Families, and Inside-Out needs as the need becomes known. We will continue our emphasis on reading based on the
five UMW Categories of Spiritual Growth, Education for Mission, Nurturing Community, Social Action, and Leadership
Development. We will continue to support the ministries of Goddard including our Children and Youth Ministries and
our Food Pantry Ministry. We were blessed in 2017 with many opportunities to be the hands and feet of Christ and we
are so thankful for all who have helped to carry out our projects and mission work.
