Steve Taylor, explains the howand whoof the United Methodist Commiee on Relief in mes of disaster response. Please take a minute to read this excellent arcle. Mary Jane Where is UMCOR?by Steve Taylor Execuve Director, NC Conference Conneconal Ministries In every disaster, one of the quesons we oſten receive is Where is UMCOR?I understand the queson and appreciate that people dont see a similar response from UMCOR as they see from The Salvaon Army or Bapst Men. The answer lies in the structure of our United Methodist connecon and the United Methodist Commiee on Relief. In the United States, there are only a few people working in the U.S. UMCOR (United Methodist Commiee on Relief) office. Their funcon is to fund, train the trainers, and provide experse and resource United Methodist conferences across the U.S. They also act as the receptaclefor people in United Methodist churches across the naon to donate to assist those who have been affected by disaster. For example, we in the North Carolina Conference, have received $1.3 million for response and recovery operaons following Hurricane Mahew. UMCOR has already responded with a $10,000 emergency grant for Hurricane Florence and we can expect to receive significant addional funding through our UMCOR channels. UMCOR also provides training and experse that helps us in the North Carolina Conference train people for Early Response and Neighbor-to-Neighbor training for local churches. Disasters are first responded to locally. Thus, in essence, we in our local churches are the hands and feet of UMCOR. In the North Carolina Conference, we provide connual Early Response Training (ERT) mulple mes each year and provide Neighbor-to-Neighbor local congregaon training at request of local congregaons, clusters of congregaons, and districts. Currently, we have approximately 770 people trained in local churches for emergency response. This is training that is pernent for acons immediately following a storm. These ERT members are responsive to and work in coordinaon with the District Disaster Response Coordinators (DDRC) and District Superintendents (DS). Each district has at least two Disaster Response Coordinators. As the best response to a disaster is local, we encourage the ERTs to work first in their local area and then, as it becomes safe to travel and when County Emergency Managers tell us it is safe to do so, our DDRCs will deploy small ERT teams into disaster affected areas. At the same me, we begin sending cleaning buckets and health kits to areas that have been affected, usually working with local churches who act as staging areas. This is coordinated through the DDRC and the DS. For example, we have already distributed 1000 health kits to local shelters impacted by Hurricane Florence and 1000 cleaning buckets to some of the counes where it is safe for us to travel. We call on local volunteers to help with this effort and volunteers from districts to help coordinate. To be clear, these volunteers are us! Thus, to the queson, where is UMCOR? The answer is no further than our local church. We are UMCOR. This is why it is so incredibly important to parcipate in Neighbor-to -Neighbor training, ERT training, get our UMCOR green t-shirt and get out into our communies, helping where we can, praying with all who need it, and being the hands and feet of Christ. Where is UMCOR? We are UMCOR!

The article below from our friend, the Rev. Steve Taylor, explains the “how” and “who” of the United Methodist Committee on Relief in times of disaster response. Please take a minute to read this excellent article. Mary Jane “Where is UMCOR?” by Steve Taylor Executive Director, NC Conference Connectional Ministries In every disaster, one of the questions we often receive is “Where is UMCOR?” I understand the question and appreciate that people don’t see a similar response from UMCOR as they see from The Salvation Army or Baptist Men. The answer lies in the structure of our United Methodist connection and the United Methodist Committee on Relief. In the United States, there are only a few people working in the U.S. UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) office. Their function is to fund, train the trainers, and provide expertise and resource United Methodist conferences across the U.S. They also act as the “receptacle” for people in United Methodist churches across the nation to donate to assist those who have been affected by disaster. For example, we in the North Carolina Conference, have received $1.3 million for response and recovery operations following Hurricane Matthew. UMCOR has already responded with a $10,000 emergency grant for Hurricane Florence and we can expect to receive significant additional funding through our UMCOR channels. UMCOR also provides training and expertise that helps us in the North Carolina Conference train people for Early Response and Neighbor-to-Neighbor training for local churches. Disasters are first responded to locally. Thus, in essence, we in our local churches are the hands and feet of UMCOR. In the North Carolina Conference, we provide continual Early Response Training (ERT) multiple times each year and provide Neighbor-to-Neighbor local congregation training at request of local congregations, clusters of congregations, and districts. Currently, we have approximately 770 people trained in local churches for emergency response. This is training that is pertinent for actions immediately following a storm. These ERT members are responsive to and work in coordination with the District Disaster Response Coordinators (DDRC) and District Superintendents (DS). Haitian Metal Artwork Available November 4th The Mountains to Mountains/Sea to Sea Mission team, the Seaside mission team that visited and worked in Haiti in June, will offer authentic Haitian Metal artwork for sale in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, November 4 after each worship service. This metal artwork would make a lovely addition to any coastal home as many, but not all, pieces have a beach theme. They also make unique birthday or Christmas gifts. The artwork is bought directly from the Village of the Artisans in Croix des Bouquets, Haiti, where metal artwork began. Your donation/purchase of Haitian metal goes directly to provide the daily living expenses of six orphaned sisters. The girls live together in a two room block and cement house in the village of Cazale.

The summer was a busy time at our food pantry. We saw more children coming in with their moms and greatly appreciate the items donated especially with them in mind. The Bridge Preservation Society donated peanut butter and jelly, and the

STARS program provided milk, juice, fruit and other items. Lowes Foods continually brings us items they collect from customers who purchase specially designated food items when checking out. And, of course, we could not carry on this outreach mission without the ongoing support of our Seaside family. Each week during the summer we averaged serving 45 families. Would you like to volunteer at our pantry? 2019 scheduling will begin soon. We are always looking for volunteers who are willing to bag groceries. This is a "behind the scenes" job that is so critical in the operation of the pantry. A hearty "shout out" goes out of all of our current baggers and an invitation is extended to potential new ones! Contact Ann Pike at 575-2566 if interested in serving in the Food Pantry in 2019. Ann Pike, Food Pantry Director

The United Methodist Men will have their next monthly meeting on Monday, Octobers 1st at 6:30 pm. Len Bernauer and Bert Barman will be providing the dinner that evening. Milton Coleman, from the Matthew 25 Center will be our speaker. Come and enjoy a good dinner with great Christian fellowship. These meetings also provide an excellent opportunity to meet and socialize with men from Sunday morning services different than the one you normally attend. United Methodist Men enjoy serving our

church and community. We’re always looking for

more men to participate by joining us at our social

meetings and working on our projects. We are

striving to reach a 2018 goal of at least 50 attendees

at our monthly dinner meetings. Consider bringing a

friend or neighbor as a guest to our next meeting in

September. They do not have to be a member of

Seaside UMC to join our group as we welcome all

members of our community.

Raising Funds for Chrismon Ornaments

What is a Chrismon? Chrismons are Christmas Decorations with Christian symbols on them. They help Christians remember the true meaning of Christmas.

Does Seaside Decorate With Chrismons? Yes. Each year the live Sanctuary Christmas Tree is adorned with Chrismon Ornaments. Over the years, these Styrofoam ornaments have begun to show their age and have become brittle and broken.

What Will Replace These Old Ornaments? Through the efforts of Seaside’s Worship Ministry, new fabric, beaded, beautiful Chrismon ornaments are in the process of being constructed and sewn, with the hope of having 150 new, durable ornaments ready to adorn the Sanctuary tree this Christmas.

How Can I Be Involved In This Project? From September 30th-November 30th, you have the opportunity to make a $10 donation toward the purchase of the needed Chrismon materials. Your donation can be made in honor of or in memory of loved ones. The donor’s name, along with those being honored/memorialized, will be published in a Sunday bulletin in early December. For your convenience, special Chrismon envelopes will be available in the Fellowship Hall each Sunday and in the church office during the week. You can also help with the construction of the ornaments. Information on upcoming “Chrismon workshops” will be published when available. Please call Carrie Casey at 336-456-7479 with questions. Thank You for Your Support of the Legacy of

Seaside’s Chrismon Ornaments.

All new Seaside members who have not yet attended a New Member Lunch are invited, along

with their sponsors, to the New Member Luncheon on Sunday, October 14th at noon in the Fellowship Hall. Enjoy lunch and fellowship while meeting other new members and Seaside’s staff. Please call Linda Mack at 610-597-4642 for more information.

Mission Statement “Building bridges in Christian service and support by reaching up and

reaching out to our neighbors in need.”

In the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, the amount of devastation and of relief needed are still evolving. Members of Seaside’s Outreach Ministry are actively involved, both in connection with the Conference response needs, but closely in touch and responding to the needs in our immediate area. At this writing, local schools will still remain closed for another week. The need is great! Following are ways that you can help, both as the “hands and feet” of Christ on the ground, and supporting the financial need, as you are able:

PRAYERS NEEDED: Above all, our continued prayers are needed not only for those directly affected by Florence, but the countless individuals who have and will, over the coming months, continue to support and help the storm victims.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Lists of items needed for cleaning kits (flood buckets), health Kits (hygiene kits) and school kits are available on the cleaning kit display table outside the Fellowship Hall. These lists can also be found on the UMCOR website. The lists are very specific to type and quantity of each item. Items can be under the display. FINANCIAL SUPPORT: As mentioned above, relief efforts are underway both Conference wide and locally through our District ERT Groups. If you would like to support either or both of these efforts, you can make your check out to SUMC and indicatethe area you wish to support in the memo line. To support the local effort through Seaside which includes the continued purchase of cleaning and health kit materials, indicate “Cleaning Kits” in the memo line. If you would like your funds to go to the Conference Hurricane Florence relief effort, indicate “S00176-NC Storm Emergency Response.” All donations will be reflected on your Statement of Giving. VOLUNTEER SUPPORT: Nancy Moon will assist anyone interested in volunteering, either in the field or internally in packing buckets, etc. Register to volunteer at nccumc.org/outreach/disaster-response/ or sign up in the Fellowship Hall and you will be contacted. Contact Nancy Moon at 571-215-0993 for more information or with questions.

Walk registration begins at 1:30pm and the walk ( the new 1 mile and the usual 3 miles / 5 K ) starts at 2:15 pm. Calvin Carter, who is pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Christian Ministry from Campbell University and was a guest soloist at last year’s Christmas & Easter Cantatas.

In the work that we do, words matter—whether we are talking about words at a bedside, from a pulpit or The Word of God in Scripture. But recently we have seen words take on a different sort of significance. From the words on a disability leave application describing Scott’s diagnosis, to the sentiment expressed in a get well card, to the word “improved” on a lab report detailing a blood test result. The “many words” of the daily news may drift away into insignificance and background chatter,

but individual words rise to the top of our minds and float there like white clouds set against an azure sky. These are words like “Hope” as we consider what lay ahead; “Awe” as we think of the ways that capable people readily step into the breach; “Change” as we face adjustments in roles, activity, and family life; and perhaps most of all “Gratitude” for the way in which all of these come together through individuals and God’s providential care. We hold each of these words closely, but as the months ahead stretch out before us, as we formally transition to Medical Leave for Scott, and as we face all the related challenges ahead, we cling most closely to “Gratitude.” For each one of you. For the expressions of care and concern and love that you have shared. And for the God who holds us all in the palm of God’s hand. Thank you for being Seaside, and for being God’s instrument in our lives at this time.

Electronics Recycling Fair-Saturday, October 13th

As Seaside and the community at large continue to recover from Hurricane Florence, we want to be sure to pass on to you our blessings, hopes and prayers that you are working your way back to normal...whatever that might be. Florence put us in an unprecedented situation for Country Fair. When the Steering Committee met on September 10, we all felt very strongly that it was time to move Country Fair away from the peak storm season here in South-eastern North Carolina. The new date is October 26 and 27 (rain date, November 2 and 3). We will follow the same schedule in the days leading up to the Fair: Tuesday, October 23 will be Tent Setup at 8:30 AM; Wednesday and Thursday the 24th and 25th will be the bringing of goods to the church grounds and setting up tables, etc. Thursday the 25th at 8 AM is the worship service for all volunteers and at about noon is the FREE luncheon for volunteers.

We know that the date change will have an impact on people's schedules. Please take some time the next couple of weeks and look at your calendars. The signup sheets are still (and will remain) in the Gathering Room out-side the Fellowship Hall. Please double check your information. If you are unable to be here, please cross your name off the list and kindly contact the Event Leader(s). We know there are folks who were unavailable for the September dates; NOW you get to sign up and help out! If you are unable to help out during the Fair in October but would like to find a way to put yourself to work, please just let us know.

Event Leaders are working around their schedules, too. Please pay attention to church communications in the coming weeks to see if there are any special needs (more baked goods or Silent Auction items, perhaps). We're look-ing for as many folks as possible to help the week of October 22.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions PLEASE contact us at 315-729-6476 (Kim) or 315-253-8107 (Carolyn).
