As I write this it seems that the worst is now past and many areas have had some rain. There are, of course, still some areas that have been less fortunate but the rainfall predictions for the year ahead do seem to be more positive. We do have to remember, however, that droughts have always been a feature of the conditions that we farm in, and will continue to be so in the future.

With this in mind, the lessons learned will have included the acute realisation that to remain successful you have to farm with nature, and within the fundamental capacity of your farm. In the case of beef cattle farming, this means farming with a breed that can handle drought conditions, including the need to be able to survive on the resulting poor veld – the Boran is such a breed.

Over the past months I have come across many examples of how capable our breed is in handling these tough conditions. In many cases this includes Boran cross animals that are becoming more and more popular amongst commercial farmers. These attributes, together with all the other attributes that characterise our breed, formed the foundation of the promotion and advertising plan that has been implemented over the past two years. This programme was very successful and we have created a high level of awareness of our breed in all the sectors of the beef cattle farming industry within South Africa and

MESSAGE FROM THE / BOODSKAP VAN DIE

We have reached the end of another year and it is that time when we reflect upon the months gone by – successes and failures, and the lessons learned. 2016 will be remembered as a year during which

severe drought conditions ravaged most of the country. Every farmer was affected and each had his or her own challenges to face.

our neighbouring countries. With regard to the future, we are now in the process of

developing a more detailed marketing plan to build on the good work done over the past two years. This plan consists of a research/technical component and a marketing communication component focussed on specific market segments (feedlots, commercial bull market, the cross-breeding sector, developing farmers, and so on). There will be an emphasis on the design and effectiveness of our marketing communication, including direct advertising, sales promotion, events, brand promotion, electronic marketing, and so on. It is also worth noting that a system of performance measurement is being considered in order that we can measure the impact of the various parts of the marketing plan. As always, an appropriate budget for this programme will be carefully designed.

So – we are excited about 2017 and beyond. We believe that there is plenty of potential for the Boran, both within South Africa and elsewhere in Africa and the world. I am sure that each and every breeder will benefit as we continue to move forward with our strategic management plan.

The success so far and the careful planning that is being done to ensure the ongoing growth of our breed is due to the excellent work being done by your Council, our office staff, the various clubs and breeder groups, and all those individuals who have lent a hand along the way. My sincere thanks go to each and every one of you.

In closing, may I use this opportunity to wish you and your family a peaceful, safe and blessed festive season, and a very successful 2017.

With warm Boran greetings

In an effort to releive our members and breeders as much as possible from the current pressures brought about by the nationwide drought, the Boran Council has come to the unanimous decision again of subsidizing the cost of the Journal 2017. No increase will be implemented and the DROUGHT RELIEF of 50% on advertisements in the Journal 2017 to be the same as

The cost of publishing our flagship document in the same manner and fashion that we have become accustomed to is a very expensive process and your Council has decided to adjust the budget accordingly in order to give assistance to our members and at the same time, produce a Journal that we will all be proud of.

Branding is an important activity of breeding registered cattle. The brand is the only mark that will permanently and uniquely identify an animal for its whole productive life. If

animals are branded with clear, easily readable brands, it makes life that much easier for all the role players involved. Inspectors sign a form wherein they declare that they have inspected an animal bearing a specific brand mark that clearly identifies that animal. This is the main reason why animals must be branded correctly before any inspection is done.

The brand (permanent identification mark) of a registered animal comprises of the following 3 lines:

• Herd Designation Mark (HDM)• The year in which the animal was

born; and

• A sequence number (usually given by the breeder).

These three parts must appear adjacent to each other at the same location, i.e. all on the same hindquarter, shoulder, etc. This especially applies to animals that are branded more than once. Even if only the HDM of an animal is changed, the WHOLE BRAND must be re-branded at the new location and not only the HDM. To assist in the ease of use, Council decided that it supports the layout of the brand as portrayed in the bye-laws, according to which the HDM must be on top, the year of birth in the middle and the sequence number at the bottom.

Although it is permissible to swop the year of birth and the sequence number around, the preferred layout is to brand the year in the middle and the sequence number at the bottom. This ensures that the number on

the animal reads exactly the same as it appears on the registration certificate and ensures uniformity in the numbering of animals within the Society.

Please note that the following prescriptions apply when a number is branded on an animal:

• Letters that are turned on their side or up-side-down or mirror images of a letter are not allowed

• Letters and digits may only be branded in a row and not in any other shape (e.g. triangle)

Please take care to brand animals properly, as they will have to be rebranded if the brand blotches or becomes unreadable.

When buying and selling registered cattle, it is of utmost importance that the information stated regarding the parents of the animal being bought or sold is correct. This also constitutes a very important part of ‘ best practice’ in stud breeding. While normal good management

on the farm does result in a high degree of administrative accuracy, certainty about parentage can only be achieved based on DNA parentage verification by a recognised laboratory.

While this is not a compulsory requirement when entering an animal for sale under the auspices of the Society, all sale catalogues from January 2017 onwards will include a statement regarding the verification of parentage in respect of each animal entered.

This statement will be worded in the catalogue as either Parentage verified – “Y” or Parentage NOT verified – “N”, based on the submission (or not) of a parentage DNA verification report from one of the recognised laboratories. This DNA report must be submitted together with the other usual sale entry documentation. If no such DNA report is submitted it will be assumed that the verification of parentage has not been carried out in respect of the animal offered for sale, and the appropriate statement will then be included in the catalogue.

We would encourage you to include DNA parentage verification as part of the normal management of your stud herd - it certainly is a demonstration of best practice that will enhance the value of your product to an interested buyer.

Please don’t hesitate to contact the Boran office or any Boran breed inspector for further information on this matter.

The 4th Annual Vastrap Auction was held on Friday, 19 August at Vastrap Farm near Ladybrand. We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who supported the

auction and contributed to the success of the day.

Each year we sell all of our own-bred pregnant 7-year old cows (no exceptions) and only 20 of our best performance tested 3-year old bulls, together with a selection of heifers and animals from our guest sellers. Our auction policy aims to give buyers peace of mind that they are buying some of the best animals Vastrap has to offer at reasonable prices. Our rigorous selection process, combined with the fact that all animals are sold under the auspices of the Boran society underpins the quality of our animals.

We make every effort to be hospitable and ensure that people are well rewarded for travelling a long way to be with us. Every year, we host a dinner at our home the night before the auction and provide breakfast and lunch on auction day. This provides a great opportunity to socialise with fellow breeders and other Boran enthusiasts in a comfortable home environment. The fact that so many breeders are repeat customers also bears testament to the quality of our after-sale service.

This year, heavy rain and freezing cold weather on the morning of the auction did little to dampen the spirit. We hauled out the gas heaters, lit a bonfire and handed out blankets and sherry in the auction tent to keep everyone warm! The team from OVK/CMW did a fantastic job of running the auction smoothly in challenging weather conditions. By lunch time the sun was shining and everyone enjoyed

the steak braai. The organisation of an auction takes a huge physical and emotional toll, but it is all worth it when you see what an effort people make to be there.

There was something on offer for everyone, with prices varying from R16’000 to as high as R160’000. Astute buyers, who had done their research and know their genetics, were richly rewarded with real value for money on top quality animals. In our opinion, the 2009 year-group of cows on offer were amongst the best in the entire Vastrap herd. We are proud to say that every animal that got a bid was sold without negotiation.

For us, the biggest compliment and validation of the quality of our animals was that many prominent and respected Boran breeders, such as Burnie Staal, Ockert Werner, Werner Steinhobel, Makena Scheepers, Gert Barnard and Hermanus Biewenga, bought stud bulls at this year’s Vastrap Auction.

Our guest sellers (Peinke Ranch, Frontier Boran, Brenaissance, Pratos, Kieras & Heeltevrede Stoetery) are crucial to the success of the Vastrap Auction and they offered exceptional quality animals that did extremely well on the day. The top priced female was a heifer, PT 14-08 (Shakira BA 08-86 x Magnum CI 07-127), which sold for R160’000. The top priced 3-in-1 was Faith PRB 12-08 (with a beautiful Zorro bull calf), which sold for R110’000.

The average price of females was R34’000. The average price of bulls was R39,000. The top priced bull was VST 13-84 (Jackie MHB 09-20 x Khan MHB 04-27), which sold for R160’000 to Burnie Staal from Bos Blanco. This bull is the son of the top priced cow, Jackie MHB 09-20, which was bought by Rory Kockott (KKT Boran Stud) for R140’000.

The 5th Vastrap Auction will be held on Friday, 18 August 2017.

The auction festivities commenced with the traditional information day held on the Friday before the auction with guest speakers Mr. Henning Vermaak (leading livestock nutritionist and feedlot consultant throughout Africa) and Mr. Albert Loubser (editor of Veeplaas magazine and co-owner of Plaas Publishing). The information day was enjoyed by approximately 100 people

ending off with the customary ‘guest sellers’ dinner who enjoyed some tender beef supplied courtesy of Hurwitz Beef, with the festivities carrying on long into the night.

Despite the auction taking place in the middle of a long weekend which included the emotional municipal elections, the auction itself was extremely well supported with over 400 people in attendance including his majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini who added a VIP element to the day. Interest in the cattle on offer attracted buyers from across Africa including Zambia, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland and Mozambique. The local support for the auction and the demand in the cattle was overwhelming, resulting in 100% of the animals offered being sold during the auction with exceptionally high prices. The average prices achieved of the cattle per category have been the highest of any auction to date in 2016 culminating with a new SA record price of R300,000 for the heifer WZ 14 51 ‘Jasmine’ which was purchased by Rohan & Dylan Meintjes of Sterkfontein Borane.

It was hard to imagine that the 2016 production auction would live up to the high standards set by the 2015 auction but in the end, the 2016 auction far surpassed all possibilities and anyone’s wildest imagination. The challenge set for the 2017 production auction will be immense and all involved with Hurwitz Farming will do their utmost to ensure that the standard of cattle offered will be even better than both previous production auctions.

New to the auction calendar and a new concept amongst the cattle breeding community was the introduction of

the ‘Hurwitz Farming Circle H Studs Bull and Breeding Stock Auction’. The concept of the auction was to provide the commercial farmer with a one-stop shop concept of restocking his breeding herd for the immediate season on one auction influenced by the Boran breed. On offer was a wide selection of Boran and other pure bred breeding bulls together with 400 open heifers all ready for the upcoming breeding season.

The underlying tone of the auction was to prove the confidence that all involved with Hurwitz Farming have in the Boran breed by providing the commercial farmer the opportunity of buying and trying Boran bulls together with a wide selection of mixed bred heifers, thereby experiencing first-hand, the positive results and hybrid vigor explosion on the first generation cross bred calves when using a Boran bull. Added to the inherent attraction of using Boran bulls, the added advantage of buying a Boran bull from Hurwitz Farming is their policy of buying back progeny born from their bulls at a premium price above market.

The auction was well supported by the commercial farming community with the demand and interest in the Boran bulls being very exciting and positive for the breed in general. The highest priced bull WZ 13 30 ‘Amarock’ was purchased by Damian and Cecilia Roberts from Zambia for R70,000 with the average price achieved for the Boran bulls just under R35,000 per head.

Both auctions were made possible due to the generous support of all sponsors most notably, Afgri and John Deere having secured the headline sponsorship of both auctions.

Diarize and save the dates for Hurwitz Farming 2017 auctions which are certainly cementing themselves as some of the most anticipated auctions in the entire Boran calendar.

HURWITZ FARMINGCIRCLE H STUDS

Following on from an extremely successful inaugural auction in 2015, The Hurwitz Farming Circle H Studs Boran Production auction in August 2016 was set up to be one of the most highly anticipated auctions on the 2016 Boran calendar and it lived up to all expectations!

Pioneering in the Eastern Cape Frontier Country – the Pioneer bull auction held under the auspices of the Boran Breeders’ Society on 22 April 2016

The Pioneer Boran breeders group, consisting of Ed and Kurt Koller (Edlyn Boran Stud), Jaco Van Rensburg (De la Vida Borans), Keith Peinke (Peinke Borans) Corn and Johan van der Watt (Sandsonia), Stephen Johnson (Frontier Borans) and guest seller Dr Pierre Vienings, held their 2nd annual sale at the Hobson and Co sale yard in Grahamstown on Friday 22 April 2016.

Pioneering in Frontier and coastal country is no easy task - here old tried and trusted beliefs and practices are not easily deviated from. We certainly had our work cut out for us. Making a good impression was of paramount importance to us (as was the case at our first sale in 2015). Our breeders brought outstanding animals to this year’s auction.

The current drought and economic climate, coupled with the depressed demand for beef in general were very real concerns as we planned and marketed for the 2nd Pioneer Boran bull sale. We had no illusions that farmers would clamber over each other to ensure they could get a Boran Bull. We put in a lot of hard work and spent many hours phoning and chatting to our prospective buyers. Once again we secured a stand at the Annual Bathurst Agricultural show to promote our breed prior to our sale. We presented good quality cattle at the show and spoke to many farmers as they passed by and showed interested in this “new breed”. On sale day we were proud of the string of bulls that passed through the ring. We breathed a sigh of relief that all the hard work had paid off as Lot 1 (SPJ 11 0103, bred by Stephen Johnson) went under the hammer for R50 000 to Mr S Scheepers (prospective new member). This set the bench mark for good prices being paid throughout the sale. The highest price of R68000 was paid for Lot 4 (SS 11 31, bred by the Van der Watts) by stud breeder, Mr Quentin de Bruin of Vastrap Borans. The overall average sale price was R30000 and most of the bulls were bought by commercial farmers – a good sign for the future.

As part of the Boran Society’s promotion of the breed in the Eastern Cape, Fort Hare University are currently conducting a research study in the Fort Beaufort area. (Edendale Farm – Stephen Johnson Frontier Borans). Selected animals are weighed and measured every month. Blood and dung samples are taken to measure cholesterol levels and parasite levels etc. This project will run for an 18-month period. The first year of the research project

was conducted under extreme drought conditions so it will be interesting to see the results at the end.

The Low lying areas of the Eastern Cape are notorious for Redwater, Hartwater and Gallsickness. 2016 has been one of the toughest years for us for Redwater. The benefits of farming with the Boran in combating all these diseases are well documented and they are finally being acknowledged throughout the Eastern Cape. We as breeders know this to be true in our herds, and only by having our bulls out in the greater parts Eastern Cape will the Boran’s begin to tell their own story.

A successful sale under the auspices of the Boran Breed Society means partnering with the best …. we are privileged in this group to have members with varied talents. I would like to thank Jaco van Rensburg for the work he did in creating our Pioneer Facebook Page, for live video streaming of the auction and for his marketing at the Bathurst Ag show, and Kurt Koller for the design work of our adverts. Thanks to our wives for your continued support behind the scenes and your presence at the auction. To the sellers thanks for your commitment and once again for the quality of bulls you brought to the auction. Hester, for your work in the office and ensuring that the catalogue was perfect - it is appreciated and we thank you. Thanks to the inspectors for their time and critical eye to ensure that only the best bulls went under the hammer. Grahamstown is out of the way and we appreciate the distances you had to travel. To the girls at SA studbook for all the transfers and behind the scenes work that always seems to go unnoticed. Thank you.

Finally, Paul Hobson and the team at Hobson and Co auctioneers. They have a good understanding of the diversity of farmers and farm types in the Eastern Cape and must be congratulated on the marketing they did to ensure the success of our sale.

In conclusion I would say that many of the 2016 Boran auctions thus far all over the country seem to have been successful and that is fantastic news for the breed. From these results it is clear that the old saying still runs true; ‘’quality sells’’. In addition, 2015/16 has been a challenging year for all farmers and the cattle breed that proves to be the best survivor will be the game changer - may that breed be our humble Boran …God’s gift to Cattlemen.

For the past four years, Grootfontein Agricultural College has included the Boran in their Curriculum. With the help of the Boran Society, The East Cape Midlands Boran Club and the generosity of various

Boran Breeders, Grootfontein have started farming with Boran and the students are able to learn about the wonderful characteristics of our breed.

On Wednesday 3 August 2016, Election Day, 61 second year Grootfontein Agricultural students and their lecturers braved the icy weather and rain/sleet/snow to attend a Boran information day at Thorncliff farm in the Middelburg district. The students packed into the Lucerne shed to watch a Power Point presentation detailing the origin, genetic composition, characteristics and economic advantages of farming with Boran.

Due to the freezing weather, with the coldest temperature of the year being experienced that day, coffee breaks were very welcome and the coffee pots had to be refilled numerous times.

The practical demonstration is always a highlight for the students – they love being able to get close to the cattle, touch their oily and loose skin and experience first-hand what incredible temperament the Boran has. Ed invited some of the students to crit the various cattle and we were really impressed with how much they had taken in during the talk.

The students then wrote a test to ensure that they understood wat they had been taught. Sandile Nzuza topped the class with 94%, Lafras Moolman and Jana Alberts were joint second with 92%.

Even though the weather was miserable, the students had a wonderful time and learnt a lot about the Boran breed. Some students have commented on how much they enjoyed the day and how they would like to come back and see the Boran again.

A doctor, a lawyer, a little boy and a priest were out for a Sunday afternoon flight in a small private plane. Suddenly, the plane developed engine trouble. In spite of the best efforts of the pilot, the plane started to go down. Finally, the pilot grabbed a

parachute and yelled to the passengers that they better jump, and he himself bailed out.

Unfortunately, there were only three parachutes remaining.

The doctor grabbed one and said “I’m a doctor, I save lives, so I must live,” and jumped out.

The lawyer then said, “I’m a lawyer and lawyers are the smartest people in the world. I deserve to live.” He also grabbed a parachute and jumped.

The priest looked at the little boy and said, “My son, I’ve lived a long and full life. You are young and have your whole life ahead of you. Take the last parachute and live in peace.”

The little boy handed the parachute back to the priest and said, “Not to worry Father. The smartest man in the world just took off with my back pack.”
