From the Pastor’s Desk
A Special Award
I am grateful for the honor of being chosen for the “Distinguished Pastor of
the Year” award by the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA). The
award ceremony took place in New Orleans on April 26th at the association’s
annual conference. I am humbled by the award and I hope to live up to the
recognition. The award is a symbol of the faith, hard work, vision and perse-
verance of the many people who over the past two years collaborated to cre-
ate a new model for Catholic Education. The founding of Frassati Catholic
Academy and the redesign of three K–5 parish schools is still only a begin-
ning. Hard work on the part of many, fresh thinking, and the commitment to
academic excellence are what it takes to make a successful education pro-
gram. The other ingredient is financial support.
There’s no getting around it: education requires solid financial backing. Sup-
port for education is support for the future of our society. The challenge is to
find sources of funding beyond very limited parish subsidies. One of the ways
you can help is by becoming a tuition sponsor in whole or part or by offering a
partial scholarship for a student at Frassati Catholic Academy or St. Mary
School.
Sacramental Celebrations
I returned home from the NCEA awards ceremony to celebrate the Confirma-
tion of nearly 100 young parishioners on April 29th and the celebration of First
Communion at two Masses on May 7th as well as at several weekend
Masses. These are significant events in the life of a parish because they mark
the passing on of the faith to the next generation of disciples. The faith we
proclaim at Easter is our Catholic heritage now handed on to our youth. This
is not a static gift, but a living treasure that forms the whole person and be-
comes the wellspring of hope and meaning for the entirety of one’s life.
Pastoral Staff Transitions
As Spring brings new life to the earth, it also ushers in a season of change for
our parish. At the end of June Ms. Mary Hall who has served as St. Mary’s
business manager since 1999 will retire. Mary has played an enormous role
in overseeing the financial well–being of the parish. She was invaluable to us
during the building program and has exercised successful financial manage-
ment in a tough economy. Mary’s position will be filled by Howard Fischer, a
resident of Crystal Lake and a permanent deacon in the Rockford diocese.
His job description will be redefined to include a broader responsibility for
parish pastoral services, overseeing facilities management, finances and
general parish operations. Assisting Mr. Fischer will be Ms. Penny Elwood
whose business degree in accounting equips her for the part–time position of
Bookkeeper/Accountant.
Mr. Greg Entwhistle, our Coordinator of Youth Ministry, has decided to go
back to school for an advanced degree at Georgetown University. He will
continue his ministry with us until the end of August. Greg was our first full–
time Youth Minister, hired in 2008. We will begin our search for
Greg’s replacement after I’ve had the opportunity to form a
search committee and consult with our youth and others about
our pastoral needs and suggestions for the future.
Fr. Nate Payne who for the past twelve months has lived at St.
Mary as a resident priest while completing his studies at the
Mundelein Seminary will become our full–time associate pas-
tor on July 1, 2011. I look forward to his assistance as a full
time priest on staff. Fr. Patrick O’Malley and Fr. James Presta
will continue as our weekend assistants. And I, of course, will
continue as your pastor while retaining my duties as Dean for
Vicariate I-A and President of Frassati Catholic Academy.
I will share more about the changes on our pastoral staff in the
coming weeks. We are blessed with a hard working, bright and
mission-driven pastoral staff. The work they do is often behind
the scenes but is critical to the effective operation of the parish
in service to God’s people. I am grateful to all of our staff who
have contributed so much to St. Mary of the Annunciation.
While change is always difficult, it also carries the opportunity
for reviewing the needs of the community, the effectiveness of
our programs and services and to move forward with renewed
commitment to the mission Christ has entrusted to us.
So you can see that May will be a busy month of celebrations
and transitions. May the Risen Lord direct our efforts and hold
us together in the unity of our faith and the spirit of Charity.
Fr. Ron Lewinski
Moms & Tots Moms and Tots is a ministry for Moms of pre-
school age children (elementary and under).
Our mission is to provide a place where moms can go for fellowship,
friendship and fund with other Moms in the same phase of life. At the
same time, we seek to provide a safe place for children to play and
learn with kids their own age.
Our next meeting is Church Meeting is Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at
9:15 AM—11:30 AM “Appreciating Ourselves With the Help of Our
Friends” facilitated by Sister Gael Gensler.
All Are Welcome!

Parish Outreach – Reaching Out Catholic Charities is in need of volunteer drivers to
deliver meals to homebound seniors throughout north-
ern Lake County, especially in the Waukegan/North
Chicago area. Delivery routes typically require about
an hour and one half of your time. Deliveries take
place during the lunch hour on Monday – Friday, and
you can volunteer as infrequently as once per month or as often as
you desire. Partner with a friend or better yet, get your work unit in-
volved. Some workplace supervisors are willing to add a little flex to
the lunch hour for personnel involved in community service. It is also a
great ministry for moms with toddlers––it benefits both the kids and
seniors alike. All that is required is a car and a desire to be Christ’s
hands and feet in the world. To volunteer your time or obtain more
information, call Jim Wogan from Catholic Charities at 847-782-4126.

Parish Outreach – Reaching Out Catholic Charities
LOSS program for Children and Youth Catholic Charities’ LOSS (Loving Outreach to Sur-
vivors of Suicide) program has provided specialized
counseling and support groups for adults in the
Chicago area for many years. LOSS recently initi-
ated a support program for children and teens
(ages 3 to 18) and will be running a summer ses-
sion. All parents, teens, and children who have
been affected by the death of a friend or loved one
to suicide are welcome. Please contact the LOSS
office with any questions or for more details about
the summer program: (312) 655-7283. Catholic
Charities serves everyone, regardless of religious
affiliation.
A Thank You from Our Sharing Parish Dear St. Mary of the Annunciation Parishioners, Thank you for your generous donation of food to the Holy Family Food Pantry. The food donation was very appreciated, particularly during this time of year when food donations are few and far between. Your generosity helps us to carry out our mission: “to welcome and assist all of our brothers and sisters in Lake County who are unable to meet their daily living needs of food, clothing and shelter, while focusing on programs to help each of them to become self-sufficient and to live in society with dignity, independence and pride as productive members of the community." In addition to providing food as0sistance, we also offer several other programs including our adult B.I.K.E.S program (Becoming Independ-ent Kreates Economic Stability), summer lunch and activity program for children, summer weekend backpack food program, community garden, MOMS group, clothing and small household boutique, holiday and meal and gift programs, and complete social service refer-rals. Thank you for your continued support!
Hospitality Weekend
May 14 & 15
Everyone is invited to remain for refreshments and fellowship after all masses. Reconnect with friends, share conversa-tion, and meet new pa-rishioners.
Anointing of the Sick Sunday, May 15th 11:30 Mass
Communal Anointing of the Sick On May 15th at the 11:30 Mass we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Anyone who is seriously ill or suffers from a chronic condition or serious nature; the elderly who become weaker, even if no illness is present; those awaiting surgery; children who are ill and have sufficient use of reason are encouraged to receive an anointing at the 11:30 Mass. Ministers of Care will be available to assist anyone who needs help. Those who wish to be anointed are asked to sit in the front row of pews or at the end of the pews along the center aisle. Please check in and receive a name tag. This will identify you to the priest as a person to be anointed.
Having Difficulty Hearing the Mass? In December we installed an induction loop sys-
tem in the new church. The illustration below
explains how it works. If you use a hearing aid,
switch it to use the T-coil. If your hearing aid
does not have this feature or if you simply need
better amplification, ask an usher for hearing loop headphones, illus-
trated right. You’ll be amazed at the clarity!
The next Senior Club Meeting will be Monday, May
9, 2011, at noon in the church meeting rooms.
Good friends, great jokes and a lunch Have any
questions, please call Joyce Ladewig at 847-543-
0715.
Spartan Sports Update
Boys Basketball: The St. Mary School Boys Basketball Team fin-
ished its season with a 5-3 record and a 2nd place finish in the Trans-
figuration Charger Classic Tournament.
Coach Jeff Sierawski said, “The boys' basketball team really learned to
play as a team and had incredible success this year. They advanced
all the way to the championship game of the Transfiguration Charger
Classic Tournament. The things that really made the coaches proud
were their fantastic sportsmanship, their enthusiasm and their desire
to see every teammate succeed during the games."
The team consisted of: Quinn Burns, Dominic Cappuccilli, Danny
Fiske, Zachary Friese, Kennedy Gawin, Kevin Hamilton, Brock
Kirchner-Ortiz, Evan Murphy, Bailey Nitch, Eddie Otrembiak, Ben Rob-
erts, Colin Roos, Andrew Sierawski, Ryan Story, David Stull and Jack
Teehan.
Girls Basketball: The St. Mary School Girls Basketball Team had a
record of 9-3 and closed out its high-intensity season as Consolation
Champions in the Transfiguration Charger Classic Tournament.
Coach David Spada described the team as very determined.
“Sometimes they were the smallest team on the court, but that didn’t
stop them,” he said. “They were very determined and gelled well as a
team.”
Members of the team were: Eileen Arata, Annie Burkhalter, Victoria
Chan, Olivia Coutre, Riley Harmon, Sydney Herchenbach, Jane
O’Connor, Caitlin Teehan, Morgan Smola and Bella Anichini.
Spartan Sports Day: The weather was cold but the energy level was
high as St. Mary School students gathered on a Saturday morning in
the gym in late winter to compete in a three-on-three floor hockey tour-
nament and play a rousing kickball game as part of the first-ever Spar-
tan Sports Day. Fifth graders Bailey Nitch, Kennedy Gawin and Quinn
Burns took home the win in the floor-hockey tournament. Earlier in the
day, second and third graders enjoyed a lively game of kickball. Every
player scored and a few even had home runs.
Spartan Sports Day was coordinated by St. Mary School Athletic Di-
rector Gretchen O’Connor to provide a fun sporting opportunity that all
students at the school could participate in outside of school hours.
Congratulations to all our St. Mary School athletes for an out-
standing season and great sportsmanship. Well done!

Featured CD for May
Our Lives Change When Our Habits Change
by Matthew Kelly
Matthew Kelly has inspired millions with the message that there is
genius in Catholicism, but if the Church is to avoid falling into obscu-
rity, individual Catholics must demonstrate its relevance through a
dedication to becoming the best-version-of-themselves. Matthew
gives practical guidance in two dynamic talks on ways that we can
change our habits to change our lives... and awaken the sleeping giant
that is the Church. One of several wonderful CDs offered by this en-
gaging and gifted speaker.
Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the
parish to continue the program and offer new material.

Mesi Pou Soulye Mwen (“Thank your for my shoes” in Hatian Creol)
During this Lenten season, the students at Frassati Academy partici-
pated in a program in which they collected new and gently worn shoes
that would be sent to Sassier, Haiti. As you may remember, some
people in the most remote parts of Haiti never would own a pair of
shoes if it were not for programs such as this. During the collection
period over 850 pair of shoes/footwear were collected. On behalf of
the people of Haiti, who will benefit tremendously from these donated
shoes, the staff of St. Mary would like to thank the students, faculty
and the St. Mary parishioners who supported the Academy students
through their contributions. The season of Lent is one that has as its
foundation prayer, fasting and giving (sacrifices). The students at Fras-
sati definitely showed how they embraced the spirit of giving as they
gave and gave and gave. May God bless them and you for your gen-
erosity and kindness for the underprivileged in Haiti. Please pray for
the people of Haiti and for all who are poor and hungry.
