From the Principal’s Desk….

I am proud to present to you the third annual college magazine. Pen is mightier than the sword and we, as teachers, should have the courage

of conviction and express our thoughts and ideas fearlessly so that we usher in slowly the change we want to see. We cannot blame the

policies or the persons for the current social, political and educational system; we are the system-we have to change ourselves. For that, it is

necessary to have a platform to express our views and convince others about them. We have to earn back the respect the teaching profession

has lost over the years and every teacher must strive hard towards that

goal. The institution has started the college magazine with that purpose. The

role expectations from the teacher are becoming higher and multifaceted with nuclear families becoming the order of the day and

the parents spending the major part of the day in the workplace. The teacher is now to match her teaching style to the students‟ diverse

learning styles, make teaching as lively and interesting as the movies

and serials, face a multicultural class with confidence, develop higher order thinking and learning to learn skills in her students and develop

in them the competencies, skills and attitudes expected in a globalizing society…..We as professionals should form a self disciplining guild,

challenge each other to perform better and try hard to uplift the image

of a teacher. That is possible only if we start exchanging our views …The college magazine provides a platform to make a beginning in that

direction. We have presented in the current magazine our monthly e-newsletters

which showcase the activities, events and practices that go into the making of a teacher..…Hope you enjoy reading them. I am sure you will

like reading the creative articles and poems our students have penned

for you despite their hectic schedule….Above all, I am sure all the students will like their group photos which will go a long way in

arousing nostalgic memories for years to come!

Try to discover

the road to success

And you'll seek but never find,

But blaze your own path

And the road to success

Will trail right behind.

~Robert Brault

Indeed, walking on a beaten path never yields success… rather

initiative, risk taking, coupled with a generous ounce of courage alone

will get a person the acclaim he aims for.

This thought is particularly relevant this year in the light of the

reconstruction of the B Ed course. The Semester pattern has been

implemented beginning this year. The B Ed course would henceforth

be called the „B Ed Program‟ and its papers would now form individual

„Courses‟. Several other changes in the form of the „Semester pattern‟,

„credit system‟, „Credit points‟ etc will be the key words in operation

this year.

Page 52: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

The stakeholders of Education by and large are skeptical… but this is

very normal, considering that any kind of Change tends to be resisted

and opposed initially. Its only Robert Brault‟s pearls of wisdom quoted

above that would provide the requisite courage and persistence to get

on with this change.

And now the surveying lion roars and highlights the events held in July

and August 2011…

Ground work begins….. Good plans shape good decisions. That's why good planning helps to

make elusive dreams come true... With the onset of the Semester

pattern for the B Ed course set to roll this year, the faculty under the

able guidance of Dr Vasundhara Padmanabhan held several staff

meetings to plan the proceedings this year. Previous Plans were

transformed, fine tuning was done to note any lags and new plans were

generated for the success of the B Ed program.

Synergy leads to growth….

The institution believes that it can grow, provided its stakeholders and

particularly, is teaching faculty grow. Thus, regular Faculty forums

were organized to comprise Book reviews, ideas for publications,

brainstorming on certain vital components of the curriculum, Book

reviews etc. Ms Rupal Thakkar reviewed a book on Curriculum

Planning to acquaint the staff not only about the contents of the book

but also about how a book should be reviewed.

Orientation for enhancing the commitment towards the

profession…

Page 53: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

Ms Rupal Thakkar, Ms Hema Peese and Ms Usha Sharma were deputed

to attend the Orientation course held at the Academic Staff College ,

University of Mumbai, Kalina. The content of orientation addressed the

personal, professional, and instructional issues that can be kept in

mind while conducting teacher training programs. For e.g: Use of you

tube can prove to be very effective while teaching languages,

Environmental education and history etc. Besides this how social work

can be used to sensitize our prospective teachers towards problems of

society. Not only that the faculty also learnt how to deal with stress .

Research for enhancing quality of education ….

Research studies uncover realities which if borne in mind would

enhance qualitatively the standards in education. Each year UGC sets

aside a parts of its finances to encourage teachers / teacher educators

to undertake researches vis-à-vis the Minor Research Grant

Project. This year, each faculty member was motivated to prepare a

research proposal for availing of the aforesaid grants. The proposals

now await approval from the UGC…

Mentoring new faculty for a better institutional culture….

This year 3 new teachers have joined the teaching faculty. As part of a

healthy institutional culture, the college assumes the nurturant role and

involves the senior faculty members to mentor the former. Thus, before

embarking onto the activities chalked out for this academic year, the

new teachers were first mentored and then encouraged to take up their

individual responsibilities. This gesture infused confidence in them and

remonstrated the concern of their institution towards them.

Workshops for motivation….

Page 54: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

A workshop on Microteaching was conducted between 26th August and

3rd September 2011 to get the freshly admitted students of the B Ed

program initiated into the Art and Science of Teaching. Learning

something new and completely different liberates the mind.

Skills of Set induction, Questioning, Explanation and Illustrating with

examples were demonstrated and students were encouraged to

prepare plans and implement those skills. Constructive feedback by

the faculty instilled confidence and ensured that the skills were well

ingrained into the learners.

M ed students get the first taste of research……

Our M Ed students began their academic year on 20th August 2011.

Apart from being oriented to the course requirements, library

referencing and the regular instructional sessions, they tasted

research for the first time when they met with their guide in context of

their dissertation. After a long week of referencing, they realized the

seriousness of the activity and how indepth their reading would have to

be, to ensure that a study was fruitful and relevant.

Facing a challenge, meeting it and mastering it helps build confidence

The year has begun with a fresh helping of changes… each will be a

challenge to the learners and the facilitators.. but Dr ko Aagao jaIt

hO….let‟s face the challenge, conquer it and develop our confidence!

I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that they are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even

be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and

kudos to our leader ….!

The captain of our ship Dr Vasundhara

Education Forum for bagging the Best Teacher

Award at K C College, Churchgate. In the words

of Martin Luther King, Jr, „The ultimate measure

comfort, but where he stands at times of

challenge and controversy..‟ and Madam has shown by her sheer

determination, perseverance and enterprise that she truly

exemplifies an Ideal Leader!

Page 56: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

Dr S Radhakrishnan, the primary teacher who rose to be the Vice

President of free India epitomizes what a teacher ought to be… a

person of simple living and high thinking. Very rightly, his birthday is

celebrated all over the nation as Teachers Day.

In the K J Somaiya College of Education too, the students presented a

colorful cultural programme to felicitate the teachers and the

wonderful work they do. Group dances, speeches, games for teachers

were all part of the celebration. The teachers were touched by the

noble gesture of their students… it was truly a day to remember!

Aggrandizing our repertoire of skills…

Commitment to quality enhancement in education is the watchword

of our institution. Accordingly several workshops by experts in the

field is meticulously organized for our students. This month 2 such

workshops were successfully conducted.

Workshop on TEACHER: A LEADER was

conducted by Mr Paul Dsouza our alumni and

presently an entrepreneur and educationist

based in Malaysia. Various facets of teacher

as a leader were analyzed as well as inputs

on Transactional Analysis comprised the workshop.

There was not a moment of boredom and students

actually experienced how learning could be fun in this

workshop.

Lesson Planning Workshop wherein different aspects of the

lesson plan such as Aims, Objectives, Content analysis, Learning

Experiences, Evaluation, inculcation of core elements etc were

taught to the B Ed students vis-s-vis a well chalked out

workshop. The teachers presented the various

aspects of the above and then students were assisted in

preparing a lesson plan in their respective subjects.

The institution cares for you…

This was made evident by the keen interest the

college takes in celebrating the Birthdays and

Marriage Anniversaries of its teaching and non

teaching faculty members. This month too, we

joined in the jubilations by singing songs, cutting a

cake and giving them a small token of our love and

appreciation.

sharing for growing…

Since 3 of our faculty members Ms Rupal Thakkar, Ms Hema

Peese and Ms Usha Sharma had just returned from the

Orientation Course at the Academic Staff College at the

University of Mumbai. They shared what they had learnt … this

included Focused Area- book review, Micro teaching skills

conducted using innovative techniques, information on cyber

crime, cyber laws, web resources for model demo lessons for

innovative teaching practices etc. Ms. Savita Mali also gave a

very interactive presentation on the Meaning, nature, and scope

of educational psychology.

leading from the front…

It‟s the culture of our institution that the teaching faculty gives

actual 30 minutes model lessons in schools in various methods.

This year our faculty members gave lessons for the secondary

students at the Dominic Savio Vidyalaya, Ghatkopar. This was

done to provide an insight to our students into class room

Page 58: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

management skills, time management, building rapport with the

students etc. The same can be told verbally, but it makes a

difference if we show by practice that what we preach…

You made us proud…!!!

Our students Ms Charu Trivedi and Ms Neelam Mahajan did us

proud by bagging the First Prize (Hindi) and the Third Prize

(English) at the Extempore Competition held at the Pillai‟s

College of Education. They were awarded a cash Prize and a

Citation at the event. Good going girls! We are proud you are our

students!

Collaborating for efficiency…

Expertise , a myriad perspectives, and in short only the best

reaches the learners when the staff come together in a joint

venture to transact the curriculum. Ms Gomathi Shah, Ms

Kruttika Bhat undertook Team teaching in topics like Correlation

and Maxims along with their other colleagues to enhance the

effectiveness of teaching the aforesaid concepts. Indeed, team

work leads to success was the hidden message that students

ingrained due to this venture.

Transcending the traditional by harnessing the

technology…

Faculty is deputed on a regular basis and encouraged to present

papers at various Seminars/ Conferences etc so that they grow

both professionally and personally and benefit the institution.

Thus, Ms Gomathi Shah presented a paper on „Transcending the

Boundaries of Traditional Classroom via Innovations in

Educational Technology‟ at NSS college of Education on 17th

Page 59: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

September 2011. Ms Bhuvaneshwari S, Ms Savita Mali, Ms

Sreetanuka Nath, Ms Usha Sharma and Ms Kruttika Bhat

attended a seminar „ Human Excellence beyond academic

excellence „at Ramakrishna Math on the same day.

Research endeavors…

Dr Kalpana Kharade, Ms Rupal Thakkar, Ms Hema Peese, Ms

Usha Sharma, Ms B Bhuvaneswari managed to bag financial

support under UGCs Minor Research Grant Projects from the

University of Mumbai. Dr Vasundhara Padmanabhan

congratulated them for this great achievement and promised

them whole hearted co-operation from the institution.

Green consumer day celebrations…

The environmental education team along with

their teacher Ms Rupal Thakkar organized A

green color theme supported the green

consumer day where the color

theme for the day was Green.

All wore green clothing and the Environmental

club members organized green food stuff

competition. Ms Fatima Khair , our M Ed

student gave a presentation on Green Consumerism and

finally a Skit on saving trees was presented by Ms Neha

Budharani, Ms Rachana Bhat, Ms Riddhi Bhat, and Ms Anshu

Panjabi, our B Ed students.

In pursuit of excellence…

The first IQAC meeting of the academic year 2011-12 was held

on 29th September 2011. Dr Vijay Joshi, Principal K J Somaiya

College of Science and Commerce was also present as an

Page 60: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

external member from the community. He provided certain

suggestions to enhance student enrollment, research

endeavors, faculty development etc.

And then, the usual activities that happen in a college of education also

took place, such as regular instructional sessions, Practice teaching,

guidance of lessons, Staff meetings etc.

The lion now royally bows before taking your leave for the month… it

was a long long month full of a myriad activities….

Finally, a few lines as food for thought before we meet the next time….

There are those who work all day.

Those who dream all day. And those who spend an hour dreaming before setting to work to fulfill those

dreams. Go into the third category because there’s virtually no competition.”

- Steven J Ross

The festival of light passes on an eternal message, that there is always a

attending and conducting workshops…

The institution has always encouraged its faculty members to attend

and present papers at workshops, seminars etc to upgrade their

competencies and expand their horizons of knowledge. The month of

October witnessed our Principal, Dr Vasundhara Padmanabhan, an

effective practitioner of Psychology in Education for over a decade,

attending the workshop on “Mental Health” at the Gokhale College of

Education.

The faculty also received the unique opportunity of conducting

workshops for the B Ed students based on

their curriculum. Thus it was a win win

situation for all. The faculty gained exposure

and confidence in

transacting the curriculum

using an innovative

approach and the students gained rich inputs

and developed love for the subject, through the

interactive method that was employed.

Faculty members conducted a workshop on

Page 62: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

Concept attainment model and Gaming for the B Ed

students.

Ms S R Britto conducted a 2 day workshop on Schools of

Philosophy.

Ms Rupal Thakkar conducted the same on the topics

Multiple

intelligences and

Learning

Disability.

Mr Paul DSouza

conducted a

workshop on 21st Century Teacher to bring awareness

about the most happening mistakes during practice

teaching.

Feedback obtained from the students revealed that they

enjoyed the same and looked for some more such interactive

ways in which to learn.

Healthy mind in a health body…

Aristotle has aptly coined the term education as the „creation of a

sound mind in a sound body‟. The Somaiya Campus at

Vidyaviahar is indeed blessed with an in-house Diagnostic Health

Centre. In keeping with the concept of harnessing these

synergized facilities, a Medical Checkup for our B Ed and M Ed

learners was arranged on the 15th of October 2011. The medical

profile of our students was plotted to ensure that „Prevention is

better than Cure‟.

Page 63: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

Ensuring mastery of the content…

As part of the B Ed course requirements, each prospective

teacher has to clear a content test of 50 marks in their respective

methods of teaching. To ensure this, a 3 day content enrichment

program was conducted in the month of September and then a

content test was held on 3rd October 2011.

Towards all round development…

Intellectual development is only 1 aspect of a person‟s life. To

cater to his/her all round personality, a plethora of activities must

be meticulously planned and then executed with the finesse of a

professional.

This year a new trend of events was initiated under the able

guidance and motivation by Dr Vasundhara Padmanabhan. The

Science/Math Club, Social Sciences Club, language Club,

Environmental Club, Cultural activities club and the Magazine

club were composed and the activities were set to roll.

Enhancing the quality of teachers for enhancing

the quality of education…

A teacher is leader and thus must possess acute as well as an

expansive knowledge about not only her area of specialization,

but also education at large. As a vital post accreditation

endeavor to enhance and sustain the quality of education in our

institution, regular faculty forum, workshops and guest lectures

are conducted for the teaching faculty. This month too, the

following were organized….

1. Presentation by Mr Paul Dsouza on Cronbach‟s alpha to

validate tools on 8th October 2011

2. Inputs on „Readology‟ to enhance reading abilities by Mr

Chudgar on 18th October 2011

3. Book review presentations by Ms S R Britto, Ms B

Bhuvaneswari and Ms Sreetanuka Nath on 20th October 2011.

meetings for micro planning…

Regular meetings with the teaching and non teaching faculty

members were held to redistribute portfolios to the faculty based

on their competencies and institutional need. Also meetings with

portfolio in-charges, student council members, the B Ed students

and the M Ed students and school group leaders of Practice

Teaching are regularly held to ensure the smooth functioning of

institutional activities and sustain quality.

Setting benchmarks…

Page 66: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

Ms Gomathi Shah, conducted an orientation on Compute

Assisted presentations and laid down the ground rules for

students‟ presentations. A well chalked out plan of

implementation and execution was drawn to ensure the success

of this prerequisite of the B Ed curriculum.

Finally an ode to Deepavali….

Diwali is here, Diwali is here

That gracious festival which celebrates victory

The ancient festival of myth and mystery

That is mentioned in both mythology and history

The festival that signals Triumph over Tragedy.

Shubh Deepavali!

Its adieu till the next issue…see you soon!

Put your heart, mind, intellect and soul even to your smallest acts. This is the secret of success.

The adage „All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy‟ is what

educationists must bear in mind before commencing on their academic

tasks. Since the month of November was packed with hectic work due

to Block Practice teaching, it was inevitable that the college balances

the rigors with light cultural celebrations. The blend achieved was so

effective and invigorative that o one realized we were at the end of the

month…..

The Lion roars emphatically and brings you the highlights of the month….

Page 67: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

Eid Mubarak to all …

On the 5th of November, the college

celebrated Eid to drive home the fact that

one should not only preach but also

practice the sanctity of Secularism. This is

the only silent yet sure weapon to tackle

the menace of terrorism that is rampant in today‟s world. Thus a

very thought provoking program was dished out for all to savor…

The dress code for the day was fixed at „Twins‟ wherein students

were encouraged to dress up exactly like another student. This

innovative idea was implemented by the Mathematics Club who

very cleverly drove home the

concept of „Similarity‟ in the

subject of Geometry.

Competitions on delicious

Sheer Kurma making that

infused with concepts of

„Ratio and Proportion‟ too was well culled out by the

Mathematics Club. Hats off to their creativity! Other programs

included the singing of thumris and Sher-o-shayari sessions. Ms

Fatima Khair very thoughtfully presented a short movie depicting

the similarity in the celebrations of all Indian festivals. The

happiness was multiplied threefold when learners of the M Ed

IGNOU program too joined in the revelry! These students had

tears in the eyes when they said that this was the first institution

where they had witnessed a meaningful Eid celebration!

seriously academic….!

An intensive 4 day tutorials session from the 9th to the 14th of

November was conducted for our B Ed learners to first of all

revise the theory content of the four courses whose exams they

Page 68: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

would soon be appearing in. Each session was infused with

techniques of learning the content, use of concept maps,

mnemonics etc and also with tips for writing their papers so that

they could maximize their achievement in the forthcoming theory

exams...

Just labeling will not do.. We need to make a difference

in their lives..

Economics as a school subject is introduced in SSC schools is

introduced in Std IX. Due to the novelty of the subject , it induces

fear and phobia in the minds of the learners. Ms Manisha Chawla

, our M Ed alumnus of the last year conducted her dissertaion on

the topic : Development and Evaluation of a Study Skills

Enhancement Module for Improving the Achievement of Low

achievers from Std IX in Economics. She presented a research

paper on the same on 12th November, due to which the M Ed

learners of this year as well as the faculty members gained an

insight into the details of the study as well as the module.

Being a child at heart…

Our prospective teachers are at a very special time in their lives.

For the institution as learners, they are akin to children… but

since they are in the process of being

teachers within a few months, they are also

teachers in the making. Thus this year, they

hold the unique position of being children as

well as teachers. To commemorate this

specialness and to reignite the fire of innocence albeit for a day,

the learners put up a crisp Childrens‟ Day program. The dress

code was to come dressed like children which our learners‟

Page 69: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

whole heartedly did. Also a singing competition

based on children‟s songs was held.

The faculty as well as the learners set aside all

age related barriers and celebrated the event in the right spirit!

putting on concerted efforts towards achievement…

With the initiation of the credit based system at the B Ed level,

time and achievement of targets without compromise on quality

is the buzz word in our college. With college admissions getting

delayed as usual, it was necessary to make up for the lost time to

be in sync with the learners in other colleges of education.

Thus, 2 weeks of block Practice teaching was meticulously

culled out for our B Ed learners. This involved a whole lot of work

I terms of obtaining permissions from schools, coordinating time

tables, organizing staff for observations, writing out fail proof

lesson plans etc… but the results of committed team work were

amazing. At the end of 15 days , where almost all the teachers

and learners worked for an average of 9 hours per day, lessons

were completed ! Kudos to all who contributed in a manner big

and small, seen and unseen to make this venture a success.

Cleanliness is next to godliness…

We Indians firmly believe that obtaining and imparting knowledge

is a sacred task, that cannot be achieved without the blessings of

the almighty. Thus in this sanctified process, the place of

transacting education cannot be unclean… to ensure cleanliness

in the institution, a cleanliness drive was initiated by the Principal

along with her team.

Each staff member was allotted a B Ed students and a room in

the institution. The cleanliness of that room was now the

responsibility of that team. This would ensure a clean and

Page 70: God warms his hands at man‟s heart when he prays. 2012(1).pdf · and Research, founded on 29th August 1990, is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution offering B.Ed., M.Ed.,

conducive premise for effectively conducting the process of

education.

Multicultural inputs…

Our campus is blessed with synergy in terms of infrastructure,

resource persons, organizational

climate etc. Nun Dhammarama was a

resource person who had come to

participate in a program by the

Buddhist Institute in our campus.

Since she too is a teacher educator

in Taiwan, the college called upon her to provide her inputs on

Multicultural education. Using her experience, she conducted

well meaning activities that resulted in creating empathy as well

as sensitization towards the topic, which is so much needed in

the Globalized world of today.

That‟s all for this month… one must remember that it is not the number

of activities that matter, but the efforts that went into each of them to

be carried on successfully…

Finally, the parting shot….

Be careful not to confuse excellence with perfection.

Excellence, I can reach for; perfection is God's business.

He who thanks but with the lips

Thanks but in part;

The full, the true Thanksgiving

The rehearsal to the finals…

As a prelude to the final semester examinations as well as the

requirements of the new revised B Ed program, the students had

to undertake the preliminary examinations. This would ensure

learning of the material transacted, encountering problems if any

in the course content and the speedy redressal of the same. The

prelims comprised 4 days and students had a feel of how they

were to face the examinations.

the final countdown…

This year the semester pattern for the B Ed level was initiated for

the first time. In accordance with the same, the examinations for

the first 4 courses of the program were held between the 12 th and

15th of December 2011. Intensive tutorials , counseling and study

holidays preceded the examinations. Students were encouraged

and motivated to put their best foot forward….

teachers get together for a herculean task…

Ask any teacher about paper corrections and the unanimous

answer is that they all detest the task…. But as every task has its

perks and hazards, the teaching job too comprises of this boring

yet responsible task of correcting the answers of the learners.

Unlike each year, this year, the Centralized Assessment Process

too was conducted in 2 phases. The first phase commenced from

the 16th of December 2011… Many hands make work light and so

all the teachers embarked in a synchronous manner to

accomplish the herculean task at hand…

it’s time to get together…

Its X‟mas time folks ! A time for fun, merriment

meeting and celebration!

With this mood as the backdrop, an alumni

meet cum X‟mas party was organized by the

institution for its past and present learners. It was

a time of reminiscing and nostalgia. Elaborate

arrangements for lunch , over which bonding would result,

cultural program for the learners and their children, Santa Claus,

felicitation for last year‟s achievers etc was meticulously

planned.

The event was a smashing success… all went home happy and

smiling from ear to ear!

Merry Christmas and a

happy new year to one and

all…

Ho! Ho! Ho!

The lion finally roars for the last time as a salute to the year 2011….

without which we would not have been what we are today and what we

will be tomorrow…. Here‟s a quote for thought before the lion signs

out….

Remember God's bounty in

the year.

String the pearls of His

favor.

Hide the dark parts, except

so far as they are breaking

out in light!

Give this one day to thanks, to joy, to gratitude!

And yes, a parting shot by Santa claus ……

“A new year is unfolding – like a blossom with petals

curled tightly concealing the beauty within.”

In Edith Pierce‟s own words, „We will open the book. Its pages are

blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called

Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.‟

The fresh, crisp and hope inspiring year beckons the Roaring Lion to

announce in his royal signature tone, the undertakings of the opening

month of the year….

paper presentations for professional growth…

Ms Gomathi Shah presented a paper on the theme , „Social and

visits for ‘learning By oBserving’…

Our B Ed students were fortunate to visit the „Handicrafts

Exhibition‟ held at the S K Somaiya Junior College of Education,

which provided an insight into the rich artifacts made by the

learners at that institution. Further they visited the „Rocks

Exhibition‟ organized by the Geological Department at the

Mumbai University, Fort Campus.

The next was a visit to our institution by the Zonal Co-ordinator of

DLLE , Ms Akanksha Gawde, who conducted a mid term

monitoring of the activities as prescribed by the DLLE for our

An apple a day keeps the doctor way… but one needs more than

just an apple to remain healthy… and towards this, regular

medical checkups are a must. Thus our learners both from the B

Ed and M Ed levels underwent the medical checkup at the

Somaiya diagnostic centre…. One can never thank the Somaiya

family at Vidyavihar which houses so many facilities that one can

avail!

appraisal for improvement…

The students undertook to rating their teachers on various

aspects of curriculum transaction, so that each of them could

better the same and this would lead to qualitative enhancement

of the institution. At a later stage, the results will be shown to the

respective teacher, areas of improvement identified and a plan of

action would be framed to reach the desired goal…

sorting out mutual differences and trifles…

The institution believes that worries and problems if sorted out

can relieve individuals and then they would be free to realize

their burdens minus the emotional loads. In this context, the

learners were grouped under different faculty members who

would be their „proctors‟ Here , academic and personal problems

would be listened to, and thrashed out so as to help the learner.

This is a healthy practice of our institution and finally this

culminates into the students having a bond of appreciation for

the fact that their institution cares for them

most required catharsis…

The annual sports day was organized on 18th January 2012, so

that our students gain from the physical activity and exercise.

Various events such as Sprints, Throws, tele-games etc were

well chalked out to suit the interests of all learners. There were

winners, losers, casualties etc but more overwhelming was the

fun and sportsmanship spirit that pervaded the days events…

hosted by the institution. Such an exercise proved useful as all

the learners were new to its concept. Further, campus interviews

would be held and then these CV writing skills would really come

in handy…

A series of workshops on „Sustainable Development‟ were

organized for our learners by Ms Subbalakshmi from the Centre

for Environmental studies, Pune, so that they develop a healthy

respect and care for the environment and learn about simple yet

sustainable ways to preserve its sanctity.

on site training…

A 6 day Internship program was culled out for our B Ed learners ,

so that they gain an experience of what it entails to be a regular

teacher at an institution and the demands therein. There were

practice lessons, team teaching units, literary activities etc… All

this necessitated the co-ordination between the Practice

teaching incharge teachers, the learners, the school, our

institution, our faculty members etc… a Herculean task… but

was managed with the finesse of experts…. Thanks to the co-

operation of all those who were involved…

There were many more events that are regular programs of the B

Planning, Preparing and administering the Unit test‟ , Simulated

lessons on Role Play and Creative techniques, LMC meeting

All in all , it was a month full of work after the refreshing Xmas

Holidays….

The Lion roars tiredly for now…
