The manualGod Says wasproduced by

Child EvangelismFellowship® of

Europe for the JuniorYouth Challenge ministry. It is part of a 5-year cycle and provides enough material for12 to 24 sessions.

The lessons were written for the 11-15 yearolds but can be adapted for an older agegroup. It can meet the needs of both savedand unsaved teens. Some lessons give a clearpresentation of the Gospel, others helpyoung Christians in their walk with God,but several are a combination of both.

Clear objectivesare given atthe beginning

of each lesson,focusing on three

aspects:

knowledge emotions actions.

It is vitally important to not only teachdoctrine but also to apply it faithfully. Teensneed to be encouraged to put the lessonsinto practice in their everyday life.

An additional objective is given toindicate how the unsaved should respond tothe teaching.

Notes forthe teachersare inserted

in italicsin the lesson

text. They providea variety of methods that can facilitate theteens’ involvement: case studies, role plays, sketches, interviews, workgroups, etc.

Some methods require a lot of time. It isrecommended to divide the lessons into two

parts in order to make fulluse of the methods. An iconindicates where to split thelesson. If the teacher needs tocover the lesson in one go, hewill have to select the ideas that

will be the most useful to his group and leavethe rest aside.

Visuals andhandoutsare supplied

for alllessons. They

are numbered andgathered at the end of the manual. Thelesson text indicates when to use them. Please note that they are protected bycopyright and can be used only by the ownerof the manual.

If visuals are to be used in a small group, they can be enlarged on paper or card. In alarger group, it is better to photocopy themon acetate and use an overhead projector. The teacher may also use the PowerPoint®files made available on the CD.

Some visuals should not be revealed allat once. The teacher can position coversand remove them progressively as heteaches the lesson. It helps keep the teens’attention. The “summary visual” should

be used to recapprevious lessonsand explain theprogression. Againit is better to revealit one section at atime.

The handoutsshould bephotocopied andgiven out to the

teens. They include some creative ideas:wordsearches, crosswords, charts, questions, etc. Teens can fill them in during theprogramme or later at home. It will helpthem review the lessons and memorise themain points.

to realise that the Bible can greatlychange their lives and mould them intothe person God wants them to be.

to read the Bible regularly and seek God’sinstructions for their Christian life.

to find in the Bible the way of salvation.

Ask teens beforehand to prepare a little sketchin two parts, one for the introduction of thelesson and one for the conclusion. Give them anovel, a biography, a travel book and differentkinds of Bibles.

• Suzie enters a bookshop: “I’m looking for aspecial book, something exciting!”

• Salesman: “Here is a fantastic novel.Once you start it, you won’t be able toset it down.”

• Suzie: “No, I want a true story that wouldchallenge me.”

• Salesman: “I see. Here is an excellentbiography, very inspiring.”

• Suzie: “No, I need something that can helpme find my way in life.”

• Salesman: “Oh, you need a travel book!Take this one and you will be ready foryour next holiday trip!”

Suzie is disappointed. But we will meet heragain at the end of the lesson. What bookwould you recommend to her? Is the Biblethe special book she needs? Why? In ourgroup we study the Bible. This book is at

the centre of all we do together. Let us thinkabout why this book is different from anyother book, and why we study it.

[Visual 1 - Showthe newspaper andrefer to the differentheadlines as you coverthe next points of thelesson.]

The Bible waswritten by men, but

they were chosen and guided by God. TheHoly Spirit directed them so that the wordsthey wrote were exactly what God wanted.Look up 2 Peter 1:21. The Bible is inspiredby God (2 Timothy 3:16). It is God’s Word!

As a result of inspiration, the Bible has awonderful unity. The 66 books of the Biblewere written by over 40 different people(shepherds, fishermen, kings, etc.) who livedat different times in history. Between thewriting of the first book and that of the last, about 1,600 years elapsed. But, because theywere inspired, the writers did not contradicteach other and gave a harmonious teaching.

God’s Word is precise and exact. This wasconfirmed through the years by differentdiscoveries. Example: Luke 3:1 speaks aboutLysanias as being the Tetrarch of Abilene.

Page 7: God Says - Sample lesson text - CEF Britain · to understand why the Bible is a special book – God inspired it! to realise that the Bible can greatly change their lives and mould

For many years scholars thought thatLuke was wrong because it was commonknowledge that Lysanias was the ruler ofChalcis about 50 years earlier than Lukedescribed. But an archaeological inscriptionhas since been found, saying that Lysaniaswas the tetrarch in Abilene near Damascusat the time that Luke said. It turns out thatthere had been two people name Lysanias.

The exactness of the Bible can also beseen in the fulfilment of Old Testamentprophecies. It is especially striking as weconsider prophecies about the Lord Jesus.

Divide the teens into groups of three or four.Hand out to each group a copy ofPsalm 22:7-21 and Matthew 27:35-46.Ask them to find the correspondence betweenthe Old Testament prophecy and the NewTestament record of Christ’s crucifixion. Makesure you will have enough time to use thismethod. It might not be the case if you plan toteach the whole lesson in one go.

Through history many people tried toeradicate the Bible but never managed to.God’s Word is everlasting – Isaiah 40:8.We also know that it has been faithfullytransmitted through generations. In thewinter of 1946-1947, a shepherd madea great discovery close to the Dead Sea.He found jars full of scrolls. These scrollscontained old copies of the Old Testament. As these texts were compared to our recentversions of the Bible, they were found to bevery similar. This was a great confirmationthat the Bible we have is reliable.

So, why study the Bible? The obvious answeris because it is God’s very own Word! Whata privilege it is to be able, at any time, to open

the Bible and discover what God has to sayto us. If you were to receive a letter fromsomeone really famous you would be excitedabout it. How much more excited we shouldbe to have access to God’s own Word!

If you plan to teach this lesson intwo parts, stop here.

[Reveal visual 2progressively as yougo through the secondpart of the lesson.]

The Bible can makea real difference toyour life. As youstudy the Bible youwill find that it is:

Ask the teens to “draw their swords” (hold theirBible up high). Give a Bible reference – e.g.

“Romans 1:16.” Have them repeat it. Thencommand, “Attack!” and they compete to findthe verse. The first teen to find it stands up. Givea few moments for others to find it, and thenask the winner to read the verse aloud. Somequestions will help the group examine the verse. What does the word “Gospel” refer to? Whatpower does the Gospel have? Who can be saved?(You may use the same method as you deal withkey verses in the rest of the lesson).

The Bible shows you how you have sinnedand fallen short of God’s standards (Romans3:23), but it also shows how God hasprovided you with a way of forgivenessthrough Jesus Christ (Romans 5:8).

Page 8: God Says - Sample lesson text - CEF Britain · to understand why the Bible is a special book – God inspired it! to realise that the Bible can greatly change their lives and mould

The Gospel is powerful – by turning fromyour sin and putting your faith in Christ, youcan be saved. As you study God’s Word, Godthe Holy Spirit can speak to you through itand show you your need of salvation. If Godspeaks to you through His Word, obey Him.

For those of us who are Christians, studyingthe Bible is profitable because we will learnthings that will be of benefit to us. [Sworddrill for 2 Timothy 3:16.] In what ways canthe inspired Scripture be profitable to us?Pick out four key words.

• Doctrine (teaching) shows what is right.

• Reproof (rebuking) points out what isnot right.

• Correction shows how to get it right.

• Instruction (training) teaches how tostay right.

God’s Word helps us learn more about whatwe believe. It can show us areas of our liveswhere we are going wrong. It can help us getthings right and keep them right.

In any relationship, we learn more aboutpeople as we listen to what they have to say. When we allow God to speak to us throughHis Word, we get to know Him better aswe discover things about Him that we hadnot known before. As we draw near to Godby reading and submitting to His Word,He draws near to us and our personalrelationship with Him is strengthened(James 4:8).

God can use His Word to speak to uspersonally. As we read, we may discover atruth that can help us deal with a specificsituation we are facing. God knows allour needs, and so is able to speak to us

personally and guide us through His Word.[Sword drill for Psalm 119:105.] Accordingto this verse, what does the Word do? DoesGod light up the whole path of our lives, ordoes He guide step by step? How does thisstrengthen our relationship with Him?

As you study at school you learn manythings that you need for exams, but whichdo not make any difference at all to the typeof person you are. God’s Word is not likethat! It is practical, affecting our everydaylives. [Sword drill for James 1:22.] Whatpiece of warning do we find in this verse? Can you think of areas in which we find ithard to put God’s Word into practice?

When we discover something in God’sWord, we must seek to put it into practice.Do you believe that God wants you to obeyyour parents? Then do it! This instructioncomes from a God Who loves you and Whoknows what is the best for you. Is Godtelling you to share the message of Jesuswith your friends? It is so important to dowhat He says!

Studying the Bible and obeying what it sayswill prove productive by making us the sortof people God wants us to be. [Sword drill forMark 4:20.] What is the Word comparedto in this verse? If you receive the seed, whatshould happen? What kind of fruit is theverse talking about?

God expects Christians to grow and He hastold us the kind of “fruit” He wants to see inour lives (Galatians 5:22). Young Christian,is your life producing “fruit”? It will only doso if you are willing to spend time studyingGod’s Word.

Photocopy handout 1for all the teens. Theycould fill it in duringthe programme orlater at home. It willhelp them review thelesson and memorisethe main points.

• Suzie: “No, no, I don’t need a travel bookor a biography or a novel. I’m afraid Idon’t know myself what I am looking for!”

• Another customer in the shop: “Excuse me,I happened to overhear your conversation.I personally read a book that does me goodand helps me find my way in life. Haveyou ever read the Bible?”

• Suzie seems interested: “I must say I neverread the Bible even though I hear a lotabout it.”

• Salesman: “Come over here. We havedifferent kinds of Bibles … and somespecial offers!”

Isn’t it awesome to know that we have God’sWord available to us at any time! What partdoes God’s Word play in your life? Haveyou discovered the way of salvation it revealsand placed your faith in Jesus Christ? If so,make sure that day by day you set aside timeto study the precious Word of God. Onlythen can you hope to grow into the type ofperson God wants you to be.●
