A published author, Dr. Clement has also written several books, including titles such as Legendary Teacher Stories: How to Catch a Swamp Frog, The Reading Pig, and The Reading Pig Goes to School. Legendary Teacher Stories: How to Catch a Swamp Frog, features the account of two Gobles teachers who Clement credits as having positively impacted his own life: Mr. Mike Potts, and Mr. Gary Serrell. Both of the Gobles teachers have been recognized for their influence with an entire chapter dedicated to each of them in Clement’s book. “They built relationships, they made learning fun, they enjoyed the profession. Whether they knew it or not, I picked up on that,” explained Clement. Clement also had some powerful insight for successful students, “Always be curious. Know that you’re not the smartest person in the room, recognize that there is always someone who knows more and that you can learn from them. Want to know things.” GOBLES HOMELINK Gobles Public Schools Creating a culture of deliberate excellence Publication of Gobles Public Schools FEBRUARY, 2017 Thank you Gobles High School CLASS OF 1966 Gobles Middle/High School added 26 new books to its library thanks to a $500 donation from the Gobles High School Class of 1966. Hour of Code at Gobles Elementary School Gobles Elementary School participated in the 2016 Hour of Code, a worldwide effort to encourage everyone to spend one-hour learning how to code. On Tuesday, December 6, 2016, and Friday, December 9, 2016, a total of 54 students in grades 3rd-5th, as well as five parents, participated in the hour- long coding sessions. The Hour of Code has attracted many high-profile participants, including the likes of President Barack Obama, who wrote his first line of code as part of the event. The code.org website featured 172 different programming options, including student favorites such as Minecraft, Frozen, Angry Birds, and Star Wars. As students completed their various programming sessions, they were able to print Certificates of Completion to recognize their participation in the international event. In addition, Gobles Elementary students have been using code.org to learn coding during their technology classes with Mrs. Julie Boes. Gobles Voltage Robotics Club The Gobles Voltage robotics team’s building season began with the Kickoff Event on Saturday, January 7, 2017. At the Kickoff Event, the team learned the theme of this year’s game: FIRST Steamworks, a twist on the science fiction genre and trend that features historical settings with steam-powered machinery. Coached by Mr. John O’Neil, Gobles Middle/High School Math and Project Lead The Way Engineering teacher, the Gobles Voltage team is ready for a challenge, and eager to build a robot with a competitive edge. Principal Phil McAndrew explained that the program has really taken off, and he is looking forward to watching the team compete as they aim for a spot at the state finals. The team’s robot from last year, Sebastian, advanced to the finals at the Battle Creek Lakeview Districts. “The Gobles community and Gobles Public Schools have supported the robotics program in each of the four years of its existence. We continue to improve each season, and enjoy teaching people about our robotics club,” said Coach O’Neil. The Gobles Voltage will compete at St. Joseph High School on March, 9-10, 2017, and at Gull Lake High School on March 16-18, 2017. Grant recipient, Mrs. Megan Ivester, has transformed her classroom with alternative seating for her fourth-grade students with the help of a grant that she received from the Gobles Foundation. Research shows that alternative seating, such as the wobble chairs and exercise balls in Mrs. Ivester’s room, has helped students to expend latent energy in a constructive manner, which can positively affect their ability to focus, engage, and learn. Kindergarten Students Share Handmade Christmas Ornaments with Trees for Troops Gobles Kindergarten students presented Staff Sergeant Richard Pharr with handmade Christmas ornaments on Monday, November 28, 2016. For the ninth year in a row, the Gobles Elementary kindergarten classes decorated ornaments to adorn Christmas trees that were donated to the Trees for Troops organization by Wahmhoff Farms Nursery. Sergeant Pharr graciously accepted the ornaments that will be sent, along with the Christmas trees, to military families who are stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia in Columbus. “We’ve been fortunate enough to have had soldiers visit our classroom each year. This gives the kids an opportunity to thank them for their service in-person, as well as learn a little more about the military lifestyle, and the true sacrifices that our armed forces make to keep us all safe and free. It’s a wonderful experience for the kids and one that we hope stays with them forever!” said kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Tregloan. The U.S. Army sergeant then spent some time talking with the students, and answering their eager questions. A Diesel Mechanic, Pharr described to the students, “I’ve worked on things that have tires bigger than me,” and that he has ridden on every type of passenger helicopter that the Army uses. He explained that with the Army, he has visited many different countries such as Ireland, Germany, Kuwait and Iraq. Sergeant Pharr expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the Fort Benning soldiers that will receive the Christmas ornaments from the Gobles Kindergarten students. The students then thanked Pharr for his service by way of a high-five line.
