NOTICE OF CONTINUED JOINT PLANNING COMMISSION AND BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MEETING

REGARDING THE GENERAL PLAN UPDATE PRELIMINARY DRAFT GENERAL PLAN, GLOSSARY,

AND IMPLEMENTATION PLAN As part of Amador County’s ongoing General Plan Update process, preliminary

drafts of the general plan, glossary, and implementation plan were prepared for review before a “Joint Panel” comprised

of the County’s Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors. That review began in May, continued into June, with a

subsequent continuance scheduled to be held on: Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. (Thursday, July 28 2011 at

8:00 a.m., if needed) at the Board of Supervisors Chambers, County Administration Center, 810 Court Street, Jackson,

California.

At these previous meetings the Joint Panel reviewed and gave direction on several follow-up items presented by staff,

received comments and input from the public, reviewed and gave direction to staff on the Glossary and began the review

of the Implementation Plan. At this next meeting the Joint Panel will continue their review of the Goals, Policies and

Implementation Plan, to ensure they contain the information and items on which direction was given at the previous

Joint Meetings held in late 2008 through 2009. Public comment will be taken, however, this review is not intended to

reconsider items that have previously been discussed and on which direction has been given by the Joint Panel.

The preliminary draft documents are available online on the Amador General Plan Update page located at

www.amadorgov.org/index.aspx?page=143 and are available for viewing at the Jackson Branch of the County Library,

as well as the Planning Department and the Board of Supervisors’ office. A limited number of printed copies will be

available for purchase at the Planning Department while supplies last. If demand exceeds the number of available copies,

additional copies can be printed, however there will be a few days delay before the documents would be available.

You may visit the County’s website at www.amadorgov.org to view and obtain the written information and maps that

have been developed to this point in the General Plan Update process. The Update process is ongoing so please continue

to monitor the website and watch for notices of future public hearings as changes to the proposed General Plan can, and

will, be made up until the last meeting.

ment at (209) 223-6380. Website: www.co.amador.ca.us or E-mail: planning @amadorgov.org

First 5 Amador, First 5 Calaveras And WIC Team Up With An Otter That Wants You To

Rethink Your Drink! In an effort to provide families important information, First 5, WIC and several local organizations have teamed up with a savvy

critter that knows the importance of drinking water. Potter the Otter – A Tale About Water is being introduced to Amador and

Calaveras Counties through the distribution of books and activities that encourage families to drink water instead of sugary drinks.

Frightening statistics show that the average 4-5 year old eats almost 65 lbs. of added sugar a year – that’s more than 17 teaspoons

of sugar a day. The average American consumes 50 gallons of soda and other sweetened beverages each year. Drinking sugary

beverages has been linked to weight gain, children and adults becoming obese, and developing severe health problems such as Type

2 diabetes. Reducing the amount of sugar-sweetened beverages people drink is an important step in reversing the obesity epidemic.

Potter the Otter tips:

• Drink water when you are thirsty – it’s the best choice

• Fill a pitcher with water and add fresh fruit slices for more flavor

• Limit juice to 4 to 6 ounces per day. Even 100% fruit juice contains sugar and should be limited.

• Prevent tooth decay – don’t put soda or juice in a baby bottle or sippy cup.

WIC is providing information through educational presentations and the distribution of posters and pledges encouraging families to

Rethink Their Drink. If you are interested in additional information, please contact WIC at 223-7685, First 5 Amador at 257-1092

and First 5 Calaveras at 754-6917. We would like to thank First 5 Santa Clara for sharing Potter the Otter!

Angel Food Ministries comes to Amador County Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing financial support in the form of

food relief throughout the United States. Established in 1994 to provide aid to struggling families in the Monroe, GA area, today

Angel Food Ministries serves hundreds of thousands of families across 45 states. Since its inception, Angel Food Ministries (AFM)

has fed more than 22 million Americans. In 2008, AFM provided $120 million in direct food assistance to American families. This

organization is dedicated to providing affordable, high-quality food to any and all persons in need, no qualifications required.

In response to current economic conditions, there is a greater need for affordable, fresh, good quality food. This is the core of An-

gel Food’s nationwide ministry. And the expansion of these services is one example of how desperately people are looking for a

helping hand, free of censure. Angel Food provides both individuals and families with fresh, brand name food for a fraction of the

retail price. In one local survey conducted at a grocery store here in Amador County, the price of just the meat in the Bountiful

Blessings box (priced at $46 dollars through Angel Food) cost well over $70. That is not including the vegetables, eggs and side

dishes included in the box! That is a savings of over 50%.

Many of you may be wondering, how is that possible? Well, by purchasing food in bulk directly from some of the top suppliers in

the country, food is discounted by up to 50 percent of retail pricing. Angel Food Ministries is now offering a new selection of pre-

packaged boxes with more protein items. They contain top quality food staples from every food group, including chicken or beef,

milk, eggs, vegetables and fruits. Each of the regular boxes of food feeds a family of four for about one week, or a single individual

for almost one month. The menu selections vary each month and consist of both fresh and frozen items. This helps Americans save

money without sacrificing quality. There is even a nutritional box geared for people on the go.

AFM’s services are available to anyone wanting to stretch their dollar. There are absolutely no income requirements and no embar-

rassing, personal data collected. We don’t make you fill out applications and there are absolutely no qualifications for eligibility. In

addition, there are no limits to the quantity of boxes ordered per individual. We even accept food stamps and EBT.

Grace Fellowship Amador is now a new host site for this wonderful program here in Amador County. To order a box, go

to www.angelfoodministries.com and scroll to the bottom of the page. There will be a box to enter your zip code to find the closest

host site. Enter 95642 and Grace Fellowship will come up. You can then follow the instructions from there for ordering a box.

Menu’s are also available online. Orders will be available for pick up the last Saturday of the month.

Whether things are tight financially right now, or you’re simply on the go and need good quality food that you can pull out of your

freezer and prepare quickly, AFM can meet your needs.

Motherlode Holistic celebrates relocation Motherlode Holistic Wellness Center, formerly Motherlode Holistic Connection, celebrates it new, expanded location Aug. 1 with a

Grand Re-Opening party Saturday, Aug. 20.

The new center, located at 1001 Broadway (at Clinton Road across from the California Highway Patrol in the former Mental

Health building) offers enhanced services and amenities to visitors and clients. During the Aug. 20 event, visitors will have a chance

to view the site, meet the practitioners, enjoy freshly grilled organic vegetables, receive discounts and purchase gift certificates.

"The new location has more space and greater parking, and is completely handicap accessible with room for more wellness profes-

sionals to join our team and share the complex with us," said center director/owner and hypnotherapist Brandy Astwood.

In addition to Astwood’s hypnotherapy practice and childbirth education services, the center offers six therapy rooms shared by

nine practitioners who offer holistic wellness services in the areas of hypnotherapy, pre-natal and post-partum coaching, massage,

comparative religion classes, alternative medicine, nutritional counseling, yoga, tai chi, Reiki, weight loss coaching, and other alter-

native and complementary health therapies.

“Holistic wellness is a concept that incorporates an individual's body, mind and spirit in a complementary effort to achieve optimal

health," Astwood noted. "More and more physicians are seeing the benefit of integrating treatments such as acupuncture, aromather-

apy, hypnotherapy and massage with more traditional types of treatment and diagnostic tests for many chronic and acute ailments.

This approach can reduce or even eliminate the need for prescription medications, which in turn can reduce the side-effects and exor-

bitant expenses of medications.’’

Davina’s Healing Hands and Associates offers massage and bodywork six days a week by certified massage therapists, Davina

Edmonson (owner/operator) and partners Shawna Goss, Hannah Suncloud and Daren Maupin. The team provides customized thera-

peutic bodywork sessions, including Swedish, deep tissue, prenatal and fertility, Eastern/Shiatsu, hot stone, Chinese medical and

sports massage as well as Myofascial release, Reiki, Reflexology, Acupressure, Cranial Sacral and more.

Meridian Tapping, provided by Susan McMorris, owner of Wellness By Choice, is a simple-to-use, emotional clearing technique

that has been shown beneficial in eliminating fears, phobias and emotional trauma.

Jim DuCray MS, LMFT has a 20 years of experience in Amador County providing supportive therapy. DuCray specializes in

working with substance abuse disorders and adolescents. He can be reached confidentially at (209) 304-5695.

New Activity Director at Jackson Gardens Elder Care Home Jackson, California – Lindsey Thorstensen has been chosen as the new activity director for

Jackson Gardens Elder Care Home.

Newly appointed Activity Director, Lindsey Thorstensen is no stranger to the Assistcare

residential care communities and has worked at all four; Oak Manor, Gold Quartz, Amador

Residential Care and Jackson Gardens. She recently accepted the position when Lisa Dill-

Justice became the new assistant administrator for Jackson Gardens. “It takes a special per-

son to work with our residents,” says Lisa, who was the former activity director before her

promotion. “A natural candidate for the job was Lindsey Thorstensen who came from the

activity department at sister facility, Gold Quartz Inn.” Lindsey has been with AssistCare

since 2002, working mostly in the activity departments at the facilities. When asked if she

thinks she made the right move to Jackson Gardens, Lindsey emphatically replies, “Yes, I

think it’s a perfect fit for me!”

Jackson Gardens is a member of AssistCare Residential Care Communities and is de-

signed and staffed for the care of seniors with advanced dementias such as Alzheimer’s Dis-

ease. It is located at 185 Placer Drive in Jackson and is open for tours and information seven

days a week.
