    The importance of goalsNot setting your goals could cost you money

    In the book What They Don't Teach You in the HarvardBusiness School, Mark McCormack tells a study conducted onstudents in the 1979 Harvard MBA program. In that year, the

    students were asked, "Have you set clear, written goals foryour future and made plans to accomplish them?" Only three

    percent of the graduates had written goals and plans; 13 percent had goals, butthey were not in writing; and a whopping 84 percent had no specific goals at all.

    Ten years later, the members of the class were interviewed again, and the

    findings, while somewhat predictable, were nonetheless astonishing. The 13

    percent of the class who had goals were earning, on average, twice as much as the

    84 percent who had no goals at all. And what about the three percent who had

    clear, written goals? They were earning, on average, ten times as much as the

    other 97 percent put together

    Your Goal must be well defined and not vague. It needs to be well

    defined and specific to where you are going(attaining your goal)

    for example if you want to be Mortgage free in Five years . Writing I

    want to be Mortgage Free is not specific

    Example:- I want to be Mortgage Free in Five years defines exactly yourintentions and where you want to be in Five years

    You will need measure your Goal. Think of it as a scale to

    measure the success or failure (lets not go there) of your

    Goal. I want to pay off my Mortgage is not measureable .

    Example:- I want to pay off my Mortgage in Five years is measureable

    If you Goals are not achievable you will be setting yourself upfor failure. Your Goals have to be both achievable. Dont try and

    set a goal to achieve the impossible. You will burn yourself out, quickly becomede-motivated and will give up.

    Example:- I want to be Mortgage Free in Three months is not Attainable

    A relevant goal drives the motivation, a goal you can embrace andwork toward. If it is not relevant to your life what is the

    motivation for you? Make it relevant to your success and personal development.

    Example:- I am going to win Lotto so I can pay off my Mortgage your

    chances are around 1 in 80 million so not relevant to your goal setting.

    Your Goal should have a time frame - give your goals a targetdate. Without a adding Time Basedto your goal it will have no

    meaning and will simply drift on until you lose interest. Set your goal and date tobe achievable and also on that will challenge you. I recommend you add into thisstep a reward, one you when you get there. Now thatsmotivation.

    Begin with a wish listWrite a list of things or maybe items you would like to archive.

    The important thing to remember here is that the list you write

    should be achievable, if not you will just be setting yourself upfor failure. Brain storm your ideas whatever comes into your mind

    write it down, if later on you think it is unachievable you can cross it off.

    I am sure you will have no trouble writing down goals and dreams you have, we all

    have them. I have included a page of Trigger Questions to help you use them to

    trigger you thoughts it will help spur your thoughts and get you started on your

    road to success

    When writing your list dont think this is crazy or Ill never be able to do that

    instead write down everything that comes to mind? There is no such thing as a

    crazy idea. LET YOUR MIND RUN FREE

    to it. Try to get at least 50 things down on paper.

    Have a goal for something you really want, not just something that sounds goodat the time

    Follow these steps and you will be

    on your way to achieving your Goal

    For example, you cant buy a $750,000 house ifyour income goal is only $50,000 per year. This iscalled non-integrated thinking and will sabotageall of the hard work you put into your goals. Non-integrated thinking can also hamper youreveryday thoughts as well. We should continuallystrive to eliminate contradictory ideas from ourthinking

    Work for what you want, not for what you wantto leave behind. Part of the reason why we writedown and examine our goals is to create a set ofinstructions for our subconscious mind to carryout.     First of all, unless someone is critical to helping you achieve your goal(s), do not freely

    share your goals with others. The negative attitude from friends, family and neighbors

    can drag you down quickly. Its very important that your self-talk (the thoughts in

    your head) are positive.

    Reviewing your goals dailyis a crucial part of your success and must become part of

    your routine. Each morning when you wake up read your list of goals that are written

    in the positive. Visualize the completed goal, see the new home, smell the leather seats

    in your new car, feel the cold hard cash in your hands. Then each night, right before

    you go to bed, repeat the process. This process will start both your subconscious and

    conscious mind on working towards the goal. This will also begin to replace any of the

    negative self-talk you may have and replace it with positive self-talk.

    Every time you make a decision during the day, ask yourself this question, Does it

    take me closer to, or further from my goal. If the answer is closer to, then youve

    made the right decision. If the answer is further from, well, you know what to do.

    The Pareto Principle or 80/20 as most of us know it now is an amazing tool

    Now that you have decided which unhealthy habit to eliminate, or new habit toadopt, decide on the date you will begin your behaviour change. Give this date agood deal of thought and then write it down. For example, "On February 15, 2001,I will become a non-smoker."

    In order to ensure behaviour change, experts agree that it takes a minimum of21 days to change a behaviour. Again, look at the date you are planning on changingyour habit. Count ahead 21 days and mark that date down. Now, make acommitment that you will follow your plan for 21 days.

    Helpful Suggestions

    Your target date has arrived. It is the first day of your 21-day cycle. Here are

    some helpful suggestions for habit change:

    1. Write down your goal.There is magic in the written word when it appliesto you. Experts recommend stating your goal in positive terms, such as "Iwant to be lean and physically fit," instead of "I've got to get this flabbybody out there huffing and puffing." So, begin with writing down, as apositive goal, the habit you will change.

    2. List your reasons for changing or eliminating your habit. Writing it downwill force you to think out in specific terms what this habit represents in

    your life and the meaning you believe your life will hold for you uponchanging the habit. This will also help with your commitment toward takingpositive action.

    3. Find substitute routines. For example, if you are changing eating habits andyou have identified a particularly difficult time of the day when eatinghabits are poor, create an activity, a new routine for that time.

    4. Talk to yourself. Tell yourself you're making progress. Remind yourself

    that you are moving closer to your goal.. Talk to yourself throughout theday about how you are going to avoid triggers that can get you off trackand make healthy substitutes.

    5. Recruit helpers for support. Explain to them why you are making thischange. Ask for their support. Their support may be neededencouragement.

    6. Be prepared for people who may sabotage your change. Be assertive andtell them what they are doing.

    Sustaining Motivation

    The following are some suggestions to follow each day in order to sustainmotivation and determination:

    1. Review your list of reasons for quitting or changing.

    2. Create mental pictures of yourself as having already succeeded with yourhabit change.

    3. Make affirmations, positive self-statements about your habit change. Forexample, "I am filled with so much health and vitality now that I exercisefour times a week."

    4. Reward yourself.Make up a list of self-rewards.Reward yourself verbally.

    5. Remember to take one day at a time. If you do backslide, don't labelyourself as having failed. Get out your list or reasons for quitting orchanging and begin again.

    Fatigue, boredom, depression, stress can all make it difficult to stick with yourprogram. But having a relapse isn't as important as how you deal with the relapse.If you are so devastated by failure that you call your good intentions into question

    that will make habit change harder for you. But, if you allow for an occasionalelapse and treat it as nothing more than a slight misstep that teaches yousomething, then you're on the right track.

    Follow the suggestions in this article, adopt the more helpful attitude ofevaluating your progress and accepting relapses, and you will find yourselfreaching many of your goals.You will have achieved true behaviour change.

    1. One of the biggest problems people face in achieving their goals is taking

    their eyes off the ball.

    2. You have all the steps so far, but all your good work will fall apart if you

    dont do regular reviews. Keep it a living document.

    3. A proven time to do your review is on a Monday morning, your are focused

    on the week ahead. NOW is the time to define how you will spend your

    time (this week)
