To produce thoughtful graduates imbued with values reflective of a humanist orientation analytical and problem solving skills; ability to think through ethical and social
implications of a course of action; and competency to learn continuously
throughout life
that will enable them to live meaningfully in a complex, rapidly changing and globalized world while engaging [in] their community and the nation’s development issues and concerns.
WHAT IS GE?
Part of the curriculum common to all undergraduates regardless of major
Exposes them to various domains of knowledge and ways of comprehending social and natural realities, in the process developing intellectual competencies civic capacities

IMPLICATIONS FOR GEC
Gr. 11 and 12 core subjects will
consume remedial courses in present
GEC.
Specialized courses will exceed
remedial level of current GE
courses.
Portions of present GE program will thus become unnecessary or irrelevant.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PRESENT AND PROPOSED GEC
Proposed GEC has clearly articulated goals and outcomes.
Because it is outcome-oriented, new GEC highlights competencies in addition to standard emphasis on content.
Revised GEC is leaner, more in keeping with liberal nature of general education.
New GEC provides element of choice through 9 units of electives (out of 36 units total).
