PROJECTS

Saligao Waste Management Plant

Mangaluru Smart CityA presentation on Smart Cities by the authorities of the Mangaluru Smart City Corporation provided a detailed view of this ambitious scheme of central government. The delegates were informed about the engagement of various governmental/non-governmental stakeholders in the structure of smart city corporation and also in planning and execution of localised projects. Listed in 2016 in the Smart City Mission, Mangaluru was also ranked 48th in the list of world’s most livable city, according to a private survey.

Indian Coast Guards, KochiThe Indian Coast Guard (ICG) protects India’s maritime interests with jurisdiction over the territorial waters of India. It has a wide range of task capabilities for both surface and air operations. Founded in the year 1978 under the Ministry of Defence, the Coast Guard works in close cooperation with the Indian Navy, the Department of Fisheries, the Department of Revenue (Customs) and the Central and State police forces. Visiting the Indian Coast Guard base at Kochi and interacting with the officers there was in itself a thrilling experience for the delegates.

Goa PoliceApart from tourism Goa is also known for its number 1 ranking in women safety and overall crime rates in the country. A meeting with the Director General of Police of Goa helped the delegates to understand various issues regarding law and order. The discussion also offered insights to the lesser known versions of various National and Local Issues from the experiences of the DGP.

The delegation visited the hi-tech Saligao Waste Management Plant and learned about various techniques and solutions to mass level waste management. Founded in May 2016, this plant emerged as a model project in the tourist state with a capacity to segregate 150 tonnes garbage per day which will be expanded to 200 tons very soon. Apart from waste segregation, the plant is known for its surplus production of electricity from waste which is approximately 7000 Kw every day. The aim of the GWMC is to create a zero-waste Goa by 2020.

“A yatra with a concept unlike others, letting us experience some of the bests in the field of governance and policy. Giving us a sense of realization that each of us matter and a small step can kick start big changes that we seek. An amalgamation of diverse set of people from varied fields and places as fellow yatris with an aspiration to grow, learn and be a part of nation building. This 9-day journey was both an adventure and a learning experience.”

“How a simple act of concern can create ripples strong enough to bring about characteristic changes in the lives of others is one lesson which I take back from the unforgettable experience of the Good Governance Yatra. It made me raise questions about the very meaning of change, what constitutes it and how one must approach it. I’ve come back with the obvious and the explicit: change thyself and see others follow suit. And so I found in the presence of strangers, whose faces were so similar to mine, the talisman of good governance? Nay! The essence of collective life...”

“Vision India Foundation’s Good Governance Yatra (GGY) is a spatial, temporal, spectral and, most importantly, human journey. Travelling 4,000 km across the southern states in nine days, we engaged with India’s social, cultural and administrative fabric while forging bonds with individuals from different geographies and demographies.Through field visits, stakeholder interactions and meetings with senior officials, we got a three-sixty-degree view of opportunities and adversities in the executive, judiciary and legislature. Our highlights included visiting the world’s first solar airport at Kochi; interacting with Shri Hari Kishore, CEO of Kerala’s Kudumbashree mission; peeping into the space age at ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre; and our cultural immersion on Swami Vivekananda’s life in the southernmost tip of India, Kanyakumari.”

YATRI TESTIMONIALS

“GGY’18 promised to be an immersive travel program showcasing model governance projects across 4 states of southern India, but the 9-day experience was so much more than just that. The program is a testament to what getting together 70 motivated and driven individuals from different walks of life can do. Whether it be through the project field trips, interactions with top-bureaucrats, passionate debates on various policy topics during our night travels, or simply through those moments of self-reflection, the GGY’18 experience was intensive, meditative and ultimately transformative. A lot of thought and care has gone into the structure of the program, and I believe the next generation of aspiring change makers owe it to themselves to be part of one such experience.”

”Good governance Yatra has been very interesting journey both in terms of learnings and opportunity to meet other like minded youth. The variety this Yatra had to offer in terms of various stakeholders and beneficiaries offered an opportunity to understand, learn, engage and absorb how policy making and makers work, challenges and innovative solutions they come up with from a 360° perspective which is the unique aspect of this yatra. This journey was worth to the last bit and I hope to participate and contribute in the nation building exercise from my learnings and experiences of this enthralling journey.”
