Animals and their habitats

never been alive. We will also be looking at animals habitats and comparing

habitats recognising that some animals need different things to survive.

Children will then be beginning to look at different plant and animals food

chains.

.

During this half term, we will be using Microsoft PowerPoint to create a slideshow about African animals and on the school’s new iPads we will be taking photos of ourselves! We will also learn how to access our FROGOS accounts on the iPads – a skill that the children can hopefully apply at home! To develop the children’s computational thinking, they will recap what an algorithm is (a set of instructions) and create, write, test and debug algorithms for the Beebots .

For the historical element of our

topic, we will Study the life of Nelson Mandela and learn about

his national and international achievements.

In Art this half term, the focus will be on drawing

skills as the children learn to draw an African

animal. In order to do this, they will develop their

skills in naming and draw lines and

marks; observing and drawing shapes; showing

texture through line and varying tone. Within

Design & Technology we are going to design

models of African animals, make them using

mouldable materials such as plasticine and

PlayDoh and evaluate their models by seeing if

other pupils can guess what animals they have

made.

In PE this half term, the children will be

playing invasion games. The children

will participate in team games such as

tennis and rounders. Over the half term

children will develop their skills and

Our topic for the Summer Term is ‘Go

Wild!’ In the first half term we are focusing on Africa. The children will be

able to locate the continent and its surrounding seas on a world map,

atlas and globe. Classes will be introduced to the varying climates,

landscapes and environments in Africa but we fill focus on the dry and rainy seasons of the Savannah. This will be compared to the seasons in the UK

and also to the North Pole, which we learnt about back in November!

Through looking at photographs of life in the Savannah and developing these through role play, classes will see how African life is different to our lives in Derby and in the meanwhile, learn a

few words of Swahili!

Over this half term we will be looking at the SEAL topic – Relationships. The children will be focusing on feelings and emotions through this topic. Learning to recognise different emotions they may feel and learning how to deal with them appropriately.

This term the children will continue to use their voices expressively and creatively by singing hymns on a weekly basis in class. The children will be composing some African music and watching some African drumming! Also, the children will be listening to and learning about the great composer, Mozart.

Social

We carry out peer assessment in all subjects. We create opportunities for each child’s voice and use democratic

systems within our classes.

Moral

We have a weekly Bible story reading as a key stage and talk about lessons to be

learned from the life of Jesus and other people in the Bible. Two members of each

class are part of the school council.

Spiritual

Our R.E curriculum allows children to explore their own and other beliefs and values and develop an awe and wonder.

Cultural

We will be looking at the life of Nelson Mandela and exploring how he has

affected culture today. We will also be listening to and appraising music from

Africa and by Mozart.
