Most of the time when we talk about rates, we use the concept of “unit rates.” Examples:

How much for 1 gallon of gas $/gal How many miles run in 1 hour mi/hr How much tuition you pay per credit (per means “for each one”) $/credit

It doesn’t always have to be that way, but it usually is.Property taxes are generally paid so much for every $1000 your home is worth.The slope of a roof is usually given by how many inches the rise is for every 12 inches of

run (think about it…12 inches is 1 foot).

Note: Rates are generally “reduced.” To give a rate as 6miles/8hours is NOT going to be acceptable. You need to take it down to a decimal or whole number (e.g. 0.75mph).
