Section 3.8 Functions
In this section you are going to learn about the concept of “functions.” A function is kind of like a “relationship” similar to what we talked about when we had dependent and independent variables and rates.
In our previous discussions we talked about things like:dependent independentMiles driven when given x gallons of gasCost when given x poundsEarnings based on years of education
In each case, it was the independent term that “drove” (determined) the dependent term.
Now we apply new names: Domain Range (independent) (dependent)(horizontal) (vertical) X Y
xcoming soon!
Examples:
A high temperature of 100o can occur on many days, but a single day can have only one high temperature.
An owner can have many dogs, but each dog has only one primary owner.
A person’s name can have several IDs associated with it (license, SSN, School ID), but each ID has only 1 person associated with it.
This type of relationship is called a FUNCTION.
From your text:
Fore any member of the domain, there is one and only one member of the range to which it corresponds.
A web site where you can get more info/practice on functions, domain, and range.http://www.mathwarehouse.com/algebra/relation/math-function.php
From your text:
is considered “function notation” -- a way to represent a function. It could look like this
x is considered the “input” is considered the “output”
Think of as being the old “y” that we all know and love.
A lot of what you will be doing all comes down to: Do you know how to “substitute”??????
Homework: MLP (MyLabsPlus) and the following problems from the text.1-8 Give the answer only.9-58 I STRONGLY suggest you review these. You don’t have to turn anything in. I know there are a lot, but most of them only take a few seconds for you to look at and answer.110, 112, 131 Follow the directions in your text. Make sure you show plenty of work to justify how you got your answers.
