Go Through The Process

There are many different types of interviews designed to serve different purposes orsituations. Regardless of the type of interview, most will incorporate the following

stages: establishing rapport, exchanging information, and closing the interview. Payattention to the job titles of the interviewer(s. This can help you decide how much

technical detail to provide in your responses.

Establishing Rapport

This is a very important part of the interview because while establishing rapport, first

impressions are made, and the tone of the interview is set. !ome people suggest

that the decision to hire is greatly influenced by the first five minutes of theinterview. " good interviewer will introduce him#herself, and ta$e the lead. %ollow his

or her lead & if they are chatty, be chatty' if they are formal, be formal. !omeemployers use what seems to be casual conversation to get to $now you on a more

personal level this may be crucial to a hiring decision)

Tips: 

• !mile and maintain eye contact. This is one way of communicating

confidence, even if you don*t feel it.

• +f the interviewer offers his or her hand, sha$e it firmly. +f they don*t, it is

appropriate to offer yours.

• ait until the interviewer sits or offers you a seat before sitting down.

• +f the interviewer is ma$ing small tal$, participate. -eep your answers short

and positive.

Exchange of Information

This is the bul$ of the interview. +t is your opportunity to let the interviewer $nowwhat you have to offer, and your chance to learn more about the organiation.

Tips: 

• hen you answer a /uestion, loo$ the interviewer in the eye.

• 0e aware of the interviewer*s reactions. +f he or she loo$s confused, as$ if you

can clarify anything.

• 0e aware of what your body is saying. "void closed postures. !it upright, but

not stiffly.

• Try to find a comfortable position as that will ma$e you feel more relaxed.

• 1ontrol your nervous habits. 2on*t swing your foot, tal$ with your hands (to

an extreme, or fiddle with jewelers, buttons, pens, etc.

• !how that you are interested in the job by as$ing /uestions.

• Try not to appear bored or anxious. 2on*t loo$ at your watch.

Closing the Interview

hen the interviewer is done gathering the information that is needed, he or she willas$ if you have anything to add, or if you have any /uestions. This is your

opportunity to mentally review your inventory of s$ills and ma$e sure that you havecommunicated everything that you wanted to. +f any of your /uestions have not been

addressed during the course of the interview, now is the time to as$ them.

Tips:

•   Than$ the interviewer for his#her time and consideration. 

•   "s$ when you can expect to hear from him#her.

•   +f it is not $nown when a decision will be reached, as$ if you can

phone in a wee$*s time to in/uire about the progress.

•   +f the interviewer offers his#her hand, sha$e it firmly. 3therwise, it

is fine to offer yours first.

•   +f not already discussed, you can offer to leave a sample of your

wor$, or portfolio if you have one.
