From the Deacon’s DeskDear friends in Christ,We all know there are certain verses of the scripture that are most likely to greet us on a coffee cup, bumper sticker, or wall poster. Sometimes these verses keep us going and lift our spirits. However, we never see the verses of this weekend’s gospel used that way. No one ever buys a cup with verse 21 on it: “Jesus looking at him, loved him and said, ‘You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” Even with the promise of treasure in heaven, we don’t find this passage inspiring. We want to hurry past it, to get to the coffee cup verses. We don’t want to read this story, and when we do read it, we want to find a way to wiggle out of it. Jesus calls the rich young man in today’s gospel – and us – to invest in the kingdom of God. The more we give, the more sacrifices we make, and the more involved we become – then the more joy we will experience when we enter the kingdom of God. Not that God will love anyone more, but that the experience of joy will well up in the one who has made the biggest investment. When we volunteer, when we work among the poor, when we put in “sweat equity” and give sacrificially, we reflect God’s love for us. Maybe Jesus tells us that we also build treasure in heaven. Investing time to work among those who suffer may break our hearts for now. We may see and experience things that grieve us. That sets us up for the joy when we see those who suffer find healing and love in the Resurrection. We can’t give everything away. We couldn’t live like that. However, we can take risks; we can invest in God’s ministry among the poor and hurting. We can build treasure in heaven.Saint John the Baptist pray for us!Enjoy the Festival,Deacon Frank

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Daily Masses at Sacred Heart will be offered at 8:00 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, starting at 7:00 p.m. Confessions will be heard during the time of Adoration.
Come and learn Italian!! Join us on Saturday mornings at 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m., starting Saturday, October 23. This is an eight-week program that will introduce you to the beautiful language and culture of Italy. You do not need any prior knowledge of the language. The cost will be $100.00 per person for the entire 8 weeks and all materials will be provided. The class will be held at Saint John’s in the Italian Cultural Room. St. John’s Altar Guild UPDATE: OSU football: The 2021 season is now sold out. Scores for all participants were drawn after Mass on Sunday, August 15th. Sheets will be available after every Sunday Mass in Sala Hall (see Gary Bosco). A copy will also be posted on the hall bulletin board. Good luck to all who signed up and thank you for supporting this Guild fundraiser whose focus is on purchasing the Altar needs for everything at our beloved St. John’s church.

Liturgical Calendar: October falls during the liturgical season known as Ordinary Time, which is represented by the liturgical color green. Green is a symbol of hope. The liturgical color green is worn during the praying of Offices and celebration of Masses of Ordinary Time.
The Holy Father’s Intention for the Month of October 2021: We pray that every baptized person may be engaged in evangelization, available to the mission, by being witnesses of a life that has the flavor of the Gospel.
The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. The Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary was celebrated on October 7.

World Mission Sunday (WMS) on October 23-24 this year will be the annual worldwide Eucharistic celebration of World Mission Sunday for missions and missionaries of the world. Pope Francis teaches us about our shared baptismal call to mission. As we rebuild our lives, help us to also reach out in solidarity and support for the Mission Church and the work and witness of missionaries in the Pope’s missions. Feast of St. Luke: October 18th is the Feast of St. Luke, the inspired author of the third Gospel and of the Acts of the Apostles. He accompanied St. Paul on a considerable part of his missionary journey. He was also his companion while in prison at Rome on two different occasions. His account of these events, contained in the Acts, is firsthand history. Luke’s Gospel is, above all, the Gospel of the Merciful Heart of Jesus. It emphasizes the fact that Christ is the salvation of all men, especially of the repentant sinner and of the lowly.

Prayer: O God of Creation, You have blessed us with the changing of the seasons. As we welcome the autumn months, may the earlier setting of the sun remind us to take time to rest. May the brilliant colors of the leaves remind us of the wonder of Your creation. May the steam of our breath in the cool air remind us that it is You who give us the breath of life. He saw thee more clearlyThe humble Pope John XXIII disliked the pomp and attention thatcame with his role, and he insisted on being called simply “thepope.” Nearly 60 years since his pontificate, he is remembered inItaly as il papa buono, “the good pope.” In the short time he waspope—less than five years before he died of cancer in 1963—hechanged the Catholic Church like few others by convening theSecond Vatican Council. On his deathbed, he said: “It is not thatthe gospel has changed; it is that we have begun to understand itbetter.” We can always use the intercession of “the good pope” aswe keep seeking to understand better what the gospel means inour changing times.

Our pillar of strengthToday is the feast day of Virgin Maria del Pilar, a Spanish devotioncommemorating the first official Marian apparition of the CatholicChurch. According to tradition, Mary first appeared—while stillalive—to the apostle James in the year 40, as he preached thegospel to the people of Spain. Saint James, despondent over hisprogress, prayed for reassurance, and Our Lady appeared to himin a supernatural manner, standing upon a pillar held aloft byangels. Because October is the month of the Rosary, honor Mariawith the beautiful Hail Holy Queen prayer that’s part of thatdevotion.

God to humanity: Can’t buy my loveFrom at least the time of the Pharisees, important people in theeyes of the world often assumed they had the inside track on apleasant afterlife. Pope Francis begged to differ in an Adventseason homily several years back. At the Last Judgment, Francissaid, Jesus will not say, “‘You, come with me because you havegiven so much money to the church. You are a benefactor of thechurch. Come, come to Heaven.’ No. You can’t buy your way intoHeaven. And He won’t say: ‘You are very important, you havestudied so much and earned so many honors, come into Heaven.’
No. Awards do not open the gate of Heaven,” Francis said. “Whatwill Jesus tell us to open up the gates of Heaven? ‘I was hungry,and you gave Me to eat. I was homeless, and you gave Meshelter. I was sick, and you came to see Me. I was in prison, andyou came to visit Me.’ Jesus is humility,” Francis said. Close yourpurse or wallet, and open your heart!

Patron saint of second (or more) chancesSaint Callistus I is inspiration to anyone who has made majorerrors in life. Callistus seriously messed up, not once but twice.Born into slavery, his master put him in charge of a bank thatCallistus criminally mismanaged. After a while in prison, he wasfreed to earn back the money he owed. Instead, he was arrestedfor brawling in a synagogue. Strike two. Nonetheless, Callistusreformed himself, served the early church as a cemetery manager,and was eventually elected pope! Consider saying a prayer ofthanks for a church that offers redemption (even the papacy) topeople who have fallen hard.

Friday, Oct 15, 2021MEMORIAL OF TERESA OF JESUS, VIRGIN, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
Don’t be afraid of the darkThe dark night of the soul, a term coined by Spanish mystic SaintJohn of the Cross, describes a period on the spiritual journeywhen one feels distant from God and suffers physical andemotional pain. Saint Teresa of Ávila, a close friend of John’s,actually felt like she was going mad as she pursued thecontemplative life. But then, in 1567, while gazing at a statue ofJesus, she felt an ecstasy beyond description as she reached“union with God.” Teresa wrote much about her interior life, andshe encouraged others to experience the “great gifts that comethrough abandoning everything to God and dying to oneself.” Prayfor the patience and humility to stay the spiritual course.

As of2019, the WFP has served 97 million people in 88 countries, and itwas awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to combathunger and contribute to peace in conflict areas.
