PRODUCT-BASED APPROACH
also known as the control-to-free approach, the text-based approach, and guided composition
variety of activities that can raise students' awareness in L2 writing from lower level to advance such as the use of :
reinforce L2 wiriting in terms of grammatical and syntactical forms
Model-paragraph
Sentence combining
Rhetorical-pattern exercises
- suitable for lower English proficiency level students
- require learners to work on the given exercises strictly in order to avoid grammatical errors
widely accepted among writing teachers because they have found several advantages
1. Learners learn how to write in English composition systematically from using pattern-product techniques
2. Learn how to use vocabulary and sentence structures for each type of rhetorical pattern appropriately
3. Helps instructors raise learners' L2 writing awareness, especially in grammatical structures
Learners have the knowledge of appropriate L2 use and can apply their knowledge to write in rhetorical form
Provide a certain amount of freedom for English major students to create their own compositions
Viewed as a simple , linear model of writing process which proceeds sytematically from pre-writing to composing to correcting (Tribble,1990)
- gives little attention to audience and the writing purpose - overemphasize on the importance of grammatical syntax and
mechanics - learners will lack motivation in learning
- learners are in high pressurre in creating their writing task as it mainly focus on on the accuracy of language structures.
DISADVANTAGE
- keep the strengths of product-based writing appproach
- help to shape students' writing competence
- allow them to create their own writing product in
academic settings effectively in terms of language used.
- instructors should include not only a sense of writing purpose and idea generation techniques
to make learners successful in L2 writing.
