John 13“Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7  Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.

John 138  Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11  For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.” 12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13  You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.

John 1315 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. 18  I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19  I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

What would you do?

Second half of this Gospel 1st half focuses on signs

2nd half focuses on one event—the cross

Often known as “The Book of Glory”

Important to note that John is writing to people who have already read Mark

Jesus KNOWS His time is running out…

Page 7: Go Low A closer look at John 13:1-20. John 13 “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world

Foot Washing Feet were (and are) nasty

Traveled by foot a lot

Dirt, dung, callouses, blisters, etc.

Some Jews and Greeks would ritually wash feet

But most of the time this was something a host would do

Reserved for the Gentile slaves…

Page 8: Go Low A closer look at John 13:1-20. John 13 “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world

Judas Verse 2

We know he’s been stealing money

Only disciple not from Galilee

Go back to what you would do?

Would you invite over your worst enemy?

Scripture says God is “Holy”

This means God is different

Page 9: Go Low A closer look at John 13:1-20. John 13 “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world

Judas Poured 3 years into this guy

How could you do this? Wash THIS man’s feet?

Psalm 41

This feet are about to leave and betray Him…

Note that this act DOES NOT change Judas’ heart

The other Gospels mention that the disciples are talking about greatness”

Jesus doesn’t rebuke, he redirects, he educates

Page 10: Go Low A closer look at John 13:1-20. John 13 “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world

The act We know from the other

Gospels that this is a rented room

Jesus takes the place of both host AND slave

Not foreign to them

Imagine someone coming over to eat…

Then, they go clean your toilet…

Page 11: Go Low A closer look at John 13:1-20. John 13 “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world

Peter Peter objects (V. 8)

Second level of meaning happening here

The first is humility, greatness, service

The second is about relationship

There is an invitation here to accept or not

Why is this so hard for Peter?

Page 12: Go Low A closer look at John 13:1-20. John 13 “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world

The Narrow Way We like to think we can

save ourselves

We end up using God to get heaven

NO! I’ll take care of my own dirt!

Some people say Christianity is easy…

It’s the hardest of all because you CAN’T earn it

Page 13: Go Low A closer look at John 13:1-20. John 13 “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world

Being Humble There’s a difference in doing

something the way we do it and the Jesus does it (Phil 2)

We do things that are “good investments”

Jesus does it because that's what God would do

He does it for God because God sees Himself in an act alike that

This is what God does every day

Us Service and justice are very

popular

Most people hold an inconsistent worldview

Christians are often motivated by anything but what Jesus was

Compassion, guilt, forced into it, pride

None are Gospel

Christians serve because we have been served

But our society THINKS this way

Power=change

Page 15: Go Low A closer look at John 13:1-20. John 13 “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world

Where are you in the story? Peter?

Judas?

Has Jesus humbled Himself before you?

Loved you? Forgiven you?

Have you walked away?

Here’s the thing about this story and service…

Who you refuse to serve exposes your heart…

Martin Luther

Page 16: Go Low A closer look at John 13:1-20. John 13 “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world

Two sins Galatians 6

Trying to take care of everyone

Thinking everyone should take care of you

Both are selfishness

The word for burdens here implies HEAVY

We MUST serve and we MUST allow ourselves to be served

Page 17: Go Low A closer look at John 13:1-20. John 13 “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world

Feet Exodus 3:5

Joshua 5:15

Primary feature of UNCLEAN animals were their feet

Ground was cursed

In Jesus, we walk clean

1 John 1:8-9

The key is to abide in Him

BlessingNow to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all the world might come to the obedience that comes from faith--to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.
