the most important natural resources. The tourismindustry generally overuses water resources forhotels, swimming pools, golf courses and personaluse of water by tourists. This can result in water aswell as generating a greater volume of waste water.Land Destruction

Important land resources include minerals,fossil fuels, fertile soil, forests, wetland and wildlife.Increased construction of tourism and hotels plusresorts has increased the pressure on these

resources and on scenic landscapes.

Air pollution

Transport by air, road, and rail iscontinuously increasing in response to therising number of tourists and their greatermobility.

One study estimated that a singletransatlantic return flight emits almost halfthe CO2 emissions produced by all othersources (lighting, heating, car use, etc.)consumed by an average person yearly.

Solid waste and litteringIn mountain areas, trekking tourists

generate a great deal of waste. Touristson expedition leave behind their garbage,oxygen cylinders and even campingequipment.

What can we do?Any form of tourism that does not reduce the

availability of resources and does not stop futuretravelers from enjoying the same experience

Responsible Tourism 

Tourism which reduces negative impacts on theenvironment. A camping trip using "Leave No Trace"ethics would be considered responsible tourism. 

Green Tourism 

Often called eco-tourism and sustainable tourismbut more accurately described as "any activity orfacility operating in an environmentally friendly way".A lodge with composting toilets, gray water system,and solar powered lighting is probably "green".Before you stay in a hotel check if it recycles orpractices energy saving methods. Better still, why notcamp?
