What is more, the New 500 combines technology and sentiment to reassert itself as the benchmark in its segment from all points of view. TORONTO - Toronto Real Estate Board President Mark McLean announced that Greater Toronto Area REALTORS® reported 7,998 residential transactions through the TREB MLS® System in August 2015. This result represented a 5.7 per cent increase compared to 7,568 sales reported in August 2014. On a GTA- wide basis, sales were up for all major home types. The annual growth rate in new listings was greater than the annual growth rate in sales, but active listings at the end of August were still down compared to last year. This suggests that sellers' market conditions remained in place, especially where low-rise home types like singles, semis and townhouses were concerned. "Buyers in the GTA remain confident in their ability to purchase and pay for a home over the long term. They see ownership housing as a quality investment that has historically produced positive returns while at the same time providing owners with a place to live in their chosen community," said McLean. Both the MLS® Home Price Index (HPI) Composite Benchmark and the average selling price for all home types combined were up substantially in August compared to the same period in 2014, with both increasing by approximately 10 per cent year- over-year. "A record year for home sales continued to unfold in August as competition between buyers exerted upward pressure on selling prices. It was encouraging to see annual growth in new listings outstrip annual growth in sales, but we will need to see this for a number of months before market conditions become more balanced," said Jason Mercer, TREB's Director of Market Analysis. Soda intake can increase fatal heart disease risk

NEW DELHI, (IANS) As the national capital battles one of itsworst dengue seasons, exper ts suggest natural methods likeneem and coconut oil concoction or garlic to keep the mos-quito-borne tropical disease at bay. Shailesh Mehta, founderand CEO of Joybynature.com, shares a few natural and harm-less ways to get rid of mosquitoes in your house:* Neem oil acts as a great indoor mosquito-repellent owing toits smell that wards off mosquitoes. One can make an effectiveinsecticide by mixing neem oil and coconut oil in equal propor-tion and rub it on the exposed par ts of a body.* Another natural method to keep mosquitoes at bay is to plantTulsi near the window panes. The plant has proper ties that donot allow mosquitoes to breed.* A mixture of lemon oil and eucalyptus oil is extremely effec-tive in warding off mosquitoes naturally. Both have the activecomponent cineole in it carrying antiseptic and insect repellentproper ties, which makes them effective when applied to theskin.* Camphor is an easily available ingredient that kills mosqui-toes in a house. Made from the extract of a tree, this compoundhas been found to have the longest mosquito repellent effect ascompared to other natural products. Burning camphor in a closedroom can be extremely effective in keeping mosquitoes at bay.* Garlic might smell bad, but that is exactly why mosquitoesstay away. All you need to do is crush a few pods of garlic, boilthem in water and spray the liquid in the room.

LONDON, (IANS) Drinking too much carbonated beverage can in-crease the risk of fatal cardiovascular disease, or out-of-hospital car-diac arrests (OHCA) of cardiac origin, says a study. The study analysed the impact of various beverages per person be-tween 2005 and 2011 in the 47 prefectures of Japan."Carbonated beverage consumption was significantly and positivelyassociated with OHCAs of cardiac origin in Japan, indicating thatbeverage habits may have an impact on fatal CVD (cardiovasculardisease)," said principal investigator Keijiro Saku, professor of cardi-ology at Fukuoka University in Japan."The acid in carbonated beverages might play an impor tant role inthis association," Saku noted. The study involved nearly 800,000 pa-tients who had out-of-hospital cardiac arrests of cardiac and non-

cardiac origin.Data on the consumption of the various beverages per person wasobtained from the ministry of health, labour and welfare of Japan, using expenditure on beverages as a proxy measure. The research-ers found that expenditures on carbonated beverages were signifi-cantly associated with OHCAs of cardiac origin.Expenditures on other beverages, including green tea, black tea, cof-fee, cocoa, fruit or vegetable juice, fermented milk beverage, milkand mineral water were not significantly associated with OHCAs ofcardiac origin. The findings indicate that limiting consumption of car-bonated beverages could be beneficial for health. The findings werepresented at European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress 2015 inLondon.

THANK YOUR GRANDMA FORA SUPER ROMANTIC LIFE!NEW YORK, (IANS) If you have finally discovered who is goingto be your life par tner, do not just thank your stars but allgrandmothers since human evolved as the act of"grandmothering" has helped us bond well throughout the his-tory, interesting research has shown.According to anthropologist Kristen Hawkes from University ofUtah, it looks like grandmothering was crucial to the develop-ment of pair bonds in humans.Pair bonds are universal in human societies and distinguishus from our closest living relatives. "Our hypothesis is thathuman pair bonds evolved with increasing payoffs for mateguarding, which resul ted from the evolut ion of ourgrandmothering life history," Hawkes proposed. The famed "grandmother hypothesis" credits pre-historicgrandmothering for our long human lifespan.Hawkes used computer simulations to link grandmotheringand longevity to a surplus of older fer tile men and, in turn, tothe male tendency to guard a female mate from the competi-tion and form a "pair bond" with her instead of mating withnumerous par tners. The findings contradict the traditional view that pair bonding re-sulted from male hunters feeding females and their offspring inexchange for paternity of those kids so the males have descen-dants and pass on genes. For the study, the researchers ran computer simulations of hu-man evolution - 30 simulations with grandmothering and 30 with-out. The new study indicates the ratio of fer tile men to fer tilewomen increased over time."That's what made it advantageous for males to guard a femaleand to develop a pair bond with her," Hawkes said. The grandma hypothesis holds that "the key to why moms can havenext babies sooner is not because of dad bringing home the bacon butbecause of grandma helping feed the weaned children".

Beware! TV hours can add to your body weight

GAUHAR KHAN IN FASHION DESIGNER AKASSH K AGGARWAL'S OUTFIT DURING THE (IFFD) RUNWAY WEEK IN NEW DELHI (IANS).

NEW YORK, (IANS) The more hours people in their 30s spend watchingtelevision each day, the higher the likelihood that they will have a greaterbody mass index and bigger waist circumference five years later, a 15-yearstudy has found. This association did not hold for people in their middle age, indicating that young adulthood is an important time to intervene and promoteless television viewing."We were quite surprised to find that television viewing was associated withsubsequent obesity for young adults, but not for the middle aged," said leadauthor Anthony Fabio, assistant professor of epidemiology at the Universityof Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences in Pennsylvania, US."This suggests that middle aged adults may differ from young adults in howthey respond to the influence of TV viewing," Fabio noted. The researchersanalysed data from 3,269 adults. For 15 years starting in 1990, the participants reported their television view-ing habits and had their waist circumference measured and their body massindex (a measure of weight and height that can indicate obesity) calculatedevery five years. The more time participants spent watching television whenthey were approximately 30 years old, the more likely they were to be obese

five years later, compared to their peers who spent less time in front of thetelevision. The researchers suspect many potential reasons for the associa-tion, including that young adults may be more likely to snack during televi-sion viewing and consume unhealthy food due to their greater susceptibilityto the seduction of junk food advertising on television. The researchers found that participants were more likely to eat healthierfoods as they aged. The findings appeared online in the journal SAGE Open.

Develop close friendships to stay fitNEW YORK, (IANS) Developing close friendships early in lifemay help children stay physically fit later in their adulthood, suggests new research."These results indicate that remaining close to -- as opposed toseparating oneself -- from the peer pack in adolescence haslong-term implications for adult physical health," said one ofthe researchers Joseph Allen from University of Virginia in theUS. "In this study, it was a robust predictor of increased long-term physical health quality," Allen noted. The findings indicatethat adolescent relationship qualities may come to influenceadult health through decreased levels of later anxiety and de-pressive symptoms. The researchers recruited a diverse group of 171 seventh- andeighth-graders and followed them from ages 13 through 27 yearsold. From ages 13 through 17, the par ticipants' best friend filledout a questionnaire assessing the overall quality of the friend-ship, including the degree of trust, communication, and alien-ation in the relationship.Friends also provided information about how much par ticipants'focused on fitting in with their peers. Par ticipants' health qualitywas then assessed annually at ages 25, 26, and 27 years oldwith questions about their overall health, anxiety and depres-sion symptoms, and body mass index. Results indicated that both high-quality close friendships and adrive to fit in with peers in adolescence were associated withbetter health at age 27. The study was published in the journalPsychological Science.

Unstable moods may ruinyour romantic relationshipsNEW YORK, (IANS) People with a mental illness marked byunstable moods often experience trouble having successfulfriendships and romantic relationships, a study says. Individu-als with the illness borderline personality disorder, or BPD mayhave lowered brain activity in regions impor tant for empathywhich in turn could trigger trouble in relationships, the studyindicated. "Our results showed that people with BPD traits hadreduced activity in brain regions that suppor t empathy," saidstudy lead author Brian Haas, assistant professor at Universityof Georgia in the US. This reduced activation may suggest thatpeople with more BPD traits have a more difficult time under-standing and/or predicting how others feel, at least compared toindividuals with fewer BPD traits," Haas noted. For the study, the researchers used functional magnetic resonance (fMRI)imaging to measure brain activity in 80 participnats. They found a linkbetween those with high borderline personality traits and a decreased useof neural activity in two parts of the brain: the temporoparietal junction andthe superior temporal sulcus, two brain regions implicated to be criticallyimportant during empathic processing."We found that for those with more BPD traits, empathetic processes are notas easily activated," study co-author Joshua Miller, psychology professor atUniversity of Georgia noted. "Borderline personality disorder is consideredone of the most severe and troubling personality disorders," Miller said.

EXFOLIATION, HYDRATION HELP

IN GETTING RID OF SMOKER'S LIPS

MUMBAI, (IANS) Regularly exfoliate your lips and reduce the con-sumption of caffeine to get rid of dark lips caused by regular smoking, says an exper t.Cosmetologist and beauty exper t Manisha Chopra, co-founder, SeaSoulCosmeceuticals, has shared tips to lighten smokers lips:* Exfoliation: Regularly exfoliate your lips to gradually get rid of thedarker hue that they have taken on. The simplest way to do this is tosmear some petroleum jelly on an extra soft toothbrush. Run thebrush gently over the lips in a circular motion for a couple of minutes.Wash them with lukewarm water and finish off the process by apply-ing some virgin olive oil on them for added protection.* Hydration: In order to undo the harmful effects of smoking and toprevent fur ther darkening, it is imperative that you keep yourself hy-drated. You must consume at least eight glasses of water a day forbetter lip health. Dehydration can lead, not only to chapped, but alsopigmented lips.* Homemade packs: There are a variety of packs that you can easily

make at home with kitchen ingredients to deal with smokers lips. Apaste of lemon and honey works wonders as a bleaching and soften-ing agent. You can also swap the honey for glycerine or turmeric.Another option is soaking rose petals in milk and applying this con-coction to the lips. Rose petals lend a pinkish hue to damaged lipsand revive their natural colour.* Careful cosmetic usage: Constant use of lipsticks can worsen yourproblem of smokers lips. If possible, limit your usage of lipsticks. However, given your work profile, if wearing lip colour is essential toyour overall look, you must be very careful about the kind of lipstickyou are wearing. Ensure that you buy only known brands, try to findproducts that have jojoba oil, shea butter and vitamin E as they helpkeep your lips nourished, healthy and prevent darkening.* Reduce consumption of caffeine: Caffeine can stain your lips andteeth, while tannin in tea has an even graver and more permanenteffect on their colour. Limit your consumption and watch how thecolour of your lips slowly makes a comeback.

IN LOVE? DROP AN E-MAILAND WOO YOUR GIRLNEW YORK, (IANS) If Cupid's arrow has hit you finally, it is stillbetter to express your feelings via an e-mail than leaving a voicemessage or a WhatsApp post with the girl you are in love with, says an interesting study. According to researchers from Indi-ana University (IU), in this digital age, an email can be moreeffective in expressing romantic feelings than other platforms."The bottom line is that email is much better when you want toconvey some information that you want someone to think about,"said Alan R Dennis, from IU's Kelley School of Business. Usingpsycho-physiological measures from 72 college-age people,Dennis and co-author Taylor M. Wells found that people whosent romantic emails were more emotionally aroused and usedstronger and more thoughtful language than those who leftvoicemails."When writing romantic emails, senders consciously or sub-consciously added more positive content to their messages, perhaps to compensate for the medium's inability to conveyvocal tone," Dennis and Wells wrote.Email enables senders to modify the content as messages arecomposed to ensure they are crafted to the needs of the situa-tion. Voicemail lacks this feature. A sender records a voicemailin a single take, and it can be sent or discarded and re-recorded,but not edited."Thus, senders engage with email messages longer and maythink about the task more deeply than when leaving voicemails. This extra processing may increase arousal," the authors noted.Previous research had suggested that email and text chat areconsidered poor for communicating emotion. The study alsodemonstrated that the medium used can shape the content ofthe message. Senders of utilitarian messages sent less posi-tive emails than voicemails for the same communication task.

TOOTH BRUSHING APP HELPSKEEP THE DENTIST AWAYLONDON, (IANS) An app that makes brushing teeth fun foryoungsters improves dental hygiene of users, repor ts a newstudy. This free toothbrush timer app named "Brush DJ" playsmusic for two minutes - the optimum time for brushing teeth -taken from a playlist or randomly from the user's own device orcloud. As well as encouraging tooth brushing for two minutes, italso reminds users to spit out after brushing but not to rinse, sets reminders to brush twice a day, use a mouthwash at othernon-brushing times of the day, sets aler ts for dental appoint-ments and reminders to change toothbrushes once every threemonths. "The results of our study indicate that apps such asBrush DJ are beneficial to users and open the way for fur therresearch to extend their use and effectiveness," said lead re-searcher Ben Underwood from Plymouth University PeninsulaSchools of Medicine and Dentistry in England.

TEACH TODDLERS EMOTIONS

TO HELP THEM BEHAVE BETTER

KAPIL SHARMA AND ACTRESS ELLI AVRAM DURING THE PROMOTION OF THEIR UPCOMING FILM KIS KISKO PYAR KARU INMUMBAI (IANS).

NEW YORK, (IANS) Helping your toddler understand andexpress emotions may reduce behavioural problems later on,says a new study."Our findings offer promise for a practical, cost-effectiveparenting strategy to suppor t at-risk toddlers' social andemotional development and reduce behavioural problems," saidlead investigator of the study Holly Brophy-Herb, professor atMichigan State University in the US.The research, par t of a larger study funded by a grant from theUS Depar tment of Health and Human Services, involved 89toddlers (ages 18 months to about two years) from low-incomefamilies. Mothers were asked to look at a wordless picture bookwith their toddlers. The book included many emotional under tonesas illustrations depicted a girl who lost and found a pet.Brophy-Herb and her fellow researchers focused on mothers'"emotion bridging" with the child. That involves mothers not only

labelling the emotion (for example, sad) but also putting it intocontext and tying it back to the child's life. During a follow-up visitwith the families, about seven months later, the researchers foundfewer behavioural problems in the higher-risk children. This might be because emotion bridging acts as a tool throughwhich toddlers can begin to learn about their emotions andgradually learn simple words to express emotions, needs andwishes, instead of acting out physically, Brophy-Herb said.Helping young children understand emotion should be anongoing, long-term strategy, Brophy-Herb said. Parents cantalk to their children about emotion just about anytime - on ashor t car trip home, for example, or even standing in line at thegrocery store. "Over time, these mini-conversations translate into arich body of experiences for the child," Brophy-Herb said. Thefindings appeared in the Journal of Developmental and BehaviouralPediatrics.

FAT HORMONE PUSHES YOUTO RUN THAT EXTRA MILETORONTO, (IANS) The satiety hormone leptin is indeed a realitybehind the euphoric feeling that gives runners a motivationalboost in the middle of their workout, researchers repor t. Leptinis a fat cell-derived hormone that signals to the brain when thebody has enough fuel and energy. The study suggests that falling leptin levels send a hunger sig-nal to the brain's pleasure centre to generate the rewardingeffects of running. "Based on these findings, we think that a fallin leptin levels increases motivation for physical activity as ameans to enhance exploration and the pursuit of food," explainedsenior study author Stephanie Fulton from University of Montreal. The findings also suggest that people with lower fat-adjustedleptin levels, such as high-performance marathon runners, couldpotentially be more susceptible to the rewarding effects of run-ning and thus possibly more inclined to exercise. In lab experi-ments, mice with reduced leptin signalling in the brain loggednearly twice as many miles on a running wheel compared withnormal mice. Low leptin levels have been previously shown tobe associated with exercise addiction, fast marathon times andtraining status in humans and also correlate with greater run-ning speed and duration in mice. The findings could also haveclinical implications for anorexia. Past research has shown thatleptin signalling in the brain's reward centre inhibits wheel run-ning in a rat model of anorexia-induced hyperactivity. Moreover, individuals with anorexia have low fat-adjusted leptin levelsthat are associated with increased restlessness and hyperactivity."We speculate that the mechanism described in this work could potentiallyunderlie the hyperactivity associated with anorexia," Fulton noted. In futurestudies, Fulton and her team will test their hypothesis of runningreward being associated with food seeking. The study appearedin the journal Cell Metabolism.

SLEEP AT EXACT TIME DAILYTO REMAIN HEALTHYNEW YORK, (IANS) The timing of your sleep is just as impor-tant as how much sleep you finally get, researchers from Wash-ington State University have found. Ilia Karatsoreos, assistant pro-fessor in the department of integrative physiology and neuroscience, shifted mice from their usual cycle of sleeping and waking andsaw that while they got enough sleep it was of poorer quality. The animals also had a disrupted immune response, leaving themmore open to illness. "This represents a very clear dysregulation ofthe sleep system. Over time, this could have serious consequencesfor an organism's health," Karatsoreos said. Most sleep researchfocuses on the effects of sleep deprivation or the overall amount ofsleep an animal needs. The work by Karatsoreos and his col-leagues, published in the journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity, isa rare look into the circadian process, a brain-driven clock thatcontrols the rhythms of various biological processes.
