Q: How fast can I drive with chains?A: You should not drive over 30 mph whenever running chains. It can create a lot of heat. Plus, you get expansion in the chains by centrifical force which can lead to chain failure.

Q: How far can I drive on a set of chains?A: Chains are not meant for long distance travel. Avoid bare pavement for extended periods. Chains are designed for compact snow and ice for short amounts of time.

Q: Will all cars accept chains?A: No, some vehicles have limited clearance, not allowing for chain application. But there are other alternatives, such as spider spikes and quick trak, which allow for a traction device on the car.

4 GO FOR IT December 2012

When I found out that my wife Diana paid our daughter for seven hours to do our laundry, I felt like a boiling pot of spaghetti noodles. Then, when Diana told me she popped by the laundry-mat and pitched in to help her finish the job because she looked overwhelmed, I was steaming mad! I decided to keep a lid on it; however, because I knew Diana was coming from a good place. She wanted to help our daughter, who was going through an extremely difficult transition and Diana’s massage business was in full swing, so she really needed the extra help. But come on…seven hours to do our laundry…really?

The other reason I chose to keep my anger on simmer is because I knew it would cause a huge argument between Diana and me. Now, let me say this: I love and adore my wife to death. She is my best friend, the love of my life and my biggest fan, aside from myself. But with that said, when Diana blows off steam, I am always reminded of every single thing I’ve ever done wrong and oh brother, that’s a long list. When it comes time to rumble in the jungle, Diana is half pit bull, half elephant and 100% nasty. She has the jaws of a pit bull and the memory of an elephant when it comes to grievances. Not only does she never forget, she has plenty of trunk space to store it all in!

So, I did what any sane, self respecting and battle leery husband would do in my shoes…I tried to resolve it in my own space first. Unfortunately, I tried to turn down the internal fire that continued to relent, but the boiling water continued to breech the pot, so I took the lid off and the steam filled our small house like a sauna. After a couple hours of mutual tantrums, we finally agreed on a healthy solution. One of us would show our daughter how to get the laundry done within an acceptable length of time, which is about three hours.

Once we reached a resolution, Diana’s phone rang off the hook with clients booking in for the next day, so I was stuck holding the bag, the laundry bag… and all eight of them. And I’m not talking about the small white kitchen bags. Nope, these are big brown ones you use for yard work. When we load up our truck bed on laundry day, it looks a bit like Santa’s sleigh…bah humbug!

When it came time to show our daughter a system I learned while I was working at nights as a janitor while going to college, I was actually excited. Why? Because when I give her advice, she actually listens! So, before we even got started, I told her about the first few long nightmare nights working alone into the wee morning hours. The owner didn’t pay us by the hour, he paid by the building. The

first building I inherited, I was paid to do it in two hours at $3.75 an hour. Just one small problem…it took me over five hours each night to clean! By the end of the week, I was literally ready to throw in the towel when the owner of the company, Kevin Brady said he would show me how to clean that building in less time than he was paying me for. I was extremely skeptical, but at that point I was even

more desperate. The recession of 1981 had hit a lot of us hard, so I really had nothing to lose, except

another late night and a crummy job!He said, “Bob, when you clean, make sure

you work one area at a time and bring all the cleaning supplies you need to do the job with you. Dust high to

low and move your trash can on wheels with you. So, I began to practice what Kevin preached

and sure enough, as the nights went by, I became faster and more

efficient until I was cleaning that building in just over an hour! Over the years, I’ve practiced that system often and have used it to accomplish every task I undertake, including the laundry.

I went back home to do some bookwork, when two hours later my daughter burst through the door, beaming with excitement. She exclaimed, “I can’t believe it, your system is amazing! I got 16 loads of laundry done in less than one-third the time it took me before and I feel amazing! Later that week, she called her mother and told her she was using the system to organize everything in her life that had been a chaotic mess and she had never felt more excited and empowered!

Anger is a lot like a boiling pot of spaghetti noodles. If you do nothing about it, it will eventually spill out all over the stove and create a huge mess. On the other hand, with a little creativity and even less elbow grease, you can harness that power and channel it into something positive, like cleaning a microwave oven in half the time by placing a cup of boiling water inside and letting the steam do all the hard work for you, so you avoid all the unnecessary scrubbing. One final thought about spaghetti noodles. They’re a lot like advice…throw a plate-full of them against the wall and one of them is bound to stick. Of course, after you do this and you do come to you senses, you can clean up the mess in no time with that pot of boiling water!

The Art of Exceptional TeamworkBy Bob Cox

From the first time I met Dr. Andrade and Dr. Montalvo, the dynamic husband and wife team of Dynamic Dental over four years ago, I knew that they would be a great success story. In an era where so many doctors practice medicine from a safe distance emotionally, the doctors of Dynamic Dental believe that the key to providing exceptional care is to first make a strong connection with their patients, so they feel their doctor’s desire to make each patient’s experience as positive as possible. As Dr. Montalvo stated during a recent conversation, “A patient doesn’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care.”

From the moment you pull up to their beautiful office complex, which is surrounded by lush pine trees, you’re sure to feel the undeniable serenity and warmth that flows seamlessly through the entire office. Both doctors have a soft-spoken, peaceful and confident approach with everyone they come in contact with, which has a very soothing ripple effect on their patients as well as their staff. The members of their team share that same confidence and compassion, so you instantly feel at ease because you are in the hands of professionals who are 100% committed to taking care of all your physical and emotional needs.

When I decided to become a patient of theirs, it really was a no-brainer, and the level of care I’ve received over the last three years is nothing short of outstanding. The doctors at Dynamic Dental are committed to providing their patients the very best possible care and they have invested generous sums of money and time in continuing education, along with the most sophisticated equipment and technology money can buy. They solidified their commitment to excellence by

hiring and training a competent and compassionate staff that share the same vision, so that their patients are always receiving the best possible care.

The end result is a team of health care professionals that have the skills to get the job right and the compassion to make your experience smooth as silk. But don’t be fooled into thinking that the effortless ease of this easy going group came without any thought, effort or preparation. Quite the opposite is true as Dr. Andrade and Dr. Montalvo knew that they couldn’t do it all themselves and that they had to rely on every member of their staff to make the overall patient experience as good as possible. So, they made additional investments in courses on team building and leadership to create an extraordinary level of trust, cooperation and collaboration that has created a synergistic masterpiece of team unity.

I asked the doctors more about their commitment to creating positive relationships with everyone they meet. Here’s how our conversation went.

Q: What does the art of exceptional teamwork mean in

your dental office? A: A patient’s dental experience starts with the first phone

call to our office. From the time they first talk to someone, they are treated with friendliness and respect and we are accommodating to their schedule. When they walk through our doors they will get to know the staff at the front desk, and they are very warm. It’s not just about the doctors but the entire team. A patients experience is about everyone as a whole making them feel comfortable and that’s why it’s so important for us that everyone in our office is warm, gentle and can follow our vision.

From left to right: Jeanie Ruiz, Maria Lemus, Lacey Lewis, Dr. Ricardo Andrade, Dr. Denisse Montalvo, Cynthia Belloso and Kamonica Cingcon.

December 2012 GO FOR IT 9

Lacey Lewis: I have been drawn to dentistry ever since I was little. I’ve always been fascinated with teeth and people’s smile. It’s the first thing I notice when I see someone. Dynamic Dental has been wonderful. The doctors are amazing and they do great work. It’s a family atmosphere.

Jeanie Ruiz: I became a Registered Dental Assistant because it’s nice to help our patients and that’s the aspect I love the most. It’s a great environment and it’s a private office, which is different from where I came from, which was a community clinic. Everybody in here is great. The doctors really help us learn. I’ve been in the field

for about five years and I feel like I’m still learning. They really teach us here and I love that! We’re a team, so if we need help, we help each other.

Kamonica Cingcon: I came to Dynamic Dental because I was looking for a great dental assisting position. It’s been very, very, very stress free. Everything is smooth and everything goes with the flow. What’s on the schedule stays on the schedule.

Editor’s notes: For more information about Dynamic Dental, their office is located at 9833 Horn Road in Sacramento in the Old Mills Winery Business Park off Folsom Blvd. Their phone number is (916) 368-2500 and their website is www.dynamicdentist.com.

The Art of Exceptional TeamworkQ: How have you created a warm and friendly environment

in your office?A: We work as a team to be gentle, warm, friendly and helpful.

All of our team members believe in our mission statement, which is to support our patients in every way and help them achieve better health. We are very passionate about helping people overcome their fears or any obstacles that have prevented them from getting treatment and achieving health in the past.

Q: Do you encourage your team members to offer up their ideas to create a better environment for your patients?

A: Yes, we have group huddles every day to share our ideas. Everyone has their own ideas about how patients can have a better experience and we’re happy to get that input from them. We work together to keep improving the patient experience.

Q: Do you encourage your patients to communicate with you and give you feedback as well?

A: Absolutely. Having our patients give us feedback has been beneficial for the entire team. Our patients have been very honest with us and we’ve used that to motivate our entire staff to continue to pay attention to every single detail and to continue to improve. As patients continue to share their experience with us, then we can continue to improve everyone’s experience here. Our reviews are very high…close to 100%. This means we are close to accomplishing our mission statement of patient satisfaction.

Q: Who are the full-time members of your team?A: The full-time members of the Dynamic Dental team are

Maria Lemus- treatment coordinator, Lacey Lewis- scheduling coordinator, Jeanie Ruiz- registered dental assistant and Kamonica Cingcon- registered dental assistant.

I asked each person what drew them to the field of dentistry and what their experience has been like working at Dynamic Dental. Here’s what the girls had to say…

Maria Lemus: I started working in the dental field because I liked having my teeth fixed, not so much for cosmetic purposes but for overall health. I came to Dynamic Dental because it’s a private office that is family owned. It’s not a typical private office because we offer a lot more services than a typical dental office. We also do

braces, laser, and the latest which is Botox, which is helping people with TMJ, grinding and migraines. I’ve been in the dental field for 10 years and here for 2 years and it’s been great!

What’s the Deal with Real Estate?By Joel Perez

Oh, how the market has changed in 2012. From the peak of the market, when real estate prices reached their zenith in the summer of 2005 until the end of 2011, the buyers had all the power as home values plummeted and low priced short sale and foreclosure inventory flooded the market here in the greater Sacramento area. Homes sat on the market for months, sometimes years before getting a low-ball offer from savvy and selective investors.

What we’re seeing now is a lack of inventory if you’re a buyer. If you’re a seller, then you’re pretty happy because you’ll probably receive multiple offers. What that means is if you’re the seller, you’ll probably get what you’re asking for, if not more. If you’re a buyer, you’ll just have to be prepared and realize that you’ll be competing with a lot more buyers in this market. So, every offer that you put in will likely be competing with multiple offers. With that in mind, you just have to make sure that the offer you’re submitting is a good strong offer. If you’re not sure what a strong offer is, you should get together with an honest and experienced real estate agent to find out the value of the home you’re interested in.

In a buyers market like this, houses are selling extremely fast. If the house is in good shape, I’ve seen them sell in less than a day! It almost makes it seem as if the market has turned around, but the reality is that there just isn’t that much inventory. The banks aren’t releasing a lot of foreclosures, so what we’re seeing are a lot of short sales. The short sales are literally selling in a day if they’re priced right. It really behooves you to get with an agent who is experienced and knows the market, whether you’re buying or selling.

The best advice I can give someone who is selling their home in today’s market is to get with an experienced agent who will advise you on what price you can expect to get and to select the right offer if you do receive multiple offers. If you’re a buyer, select the

right agent who will counsel you on the values of that particular neighborhood, examine the condition of the house and then submit a good strong offer that will give you a competitive edge in terms of getting your offer accepted.

There are several reasons for the dramatic shift from the buyers market that dominated the recession over the past several years to the sellers market that we are now experiencing. At the start of the year, the banks decided not to release a lot of the inventory of foreclosures, creating a low supply of inventory. On the other side of the coin, the demand has increased; more people want to buy houses now. Why? Because prices are lower than they’ve been in years and interest rates are phenomenally low. We haven’t seen them this low ever! So, people are feeling the pressure to try and purchase now while the values are still relatively low and take advantage of these great interest rates.

Discover the Joy of Holiday ShoppingVisit the Old Fair Oaks Village

Whenever I shop during the holidays, I often do what most people do. I head to the mall and prepare for battle as soon as I hit gridlock. Minutes feel like hours as my car and I creep along in the fast lane. I can’t move or escape, which makes me feel like I’m being held hostage. An unsettling agitation slowly sets in as I try to remain calm, because I’ll need to think clearly to devise a plan in the high stakes drama I like to call World Parking War II. Once I’ve reached the parking lot, that’s when all hell breaks loose. When that rare space eventually opens up, it becomes a free for all as cars drop in from all directions like paratroopers from the 182nd Airborne Division. When I finally do park the car, I’m so exhausted and relieved I wish I could celebrate the victory with a nap. But alas, my saga has just begun as I make my way through the

massive crowds inside the mall who are also suffering from battle fatigue. When I do find a store that I think has the item I’m looking for, I’m greeted by an indifferent teenaged sales clerk, who doesn’t want to be there any more than I do. They’re enduring the madness

long enough to earn a few extra bucks to party and shop for clothes.

If you want to avoid the crowds, the stress and the mall madness, try something different this year. Take a step back into time and discover a beautiful, tranquil and nostalgic place to shop this holiday season: Visit the Old Fair Oaks Village, on Fair Oaks Bl., near Sunrise Bl. It’s the closest thing I’ve seen to Mayberry since I last watched the Andy Griffith Show on TV Land. From the moment you arrive, you will be struck by the peacefulness of this hidden treasure. In

the center of the town there’s a small park that’s filled with large majestic trees that help keep the cool winter air stay clean and fresh.

After you get out of your car, be sure to grab your warm winter coat because you won’t be stuck inside a 70 degree climate controlled environment. You’ll be adventure shopping in the great outdoors today. You may feel the urge to pick up a cup of coffee or hot chocolate from one of the

many charming cafes as you meander in and out of the quaint shops, most of which are run by the friendly and helpful owners themselves. While you’re there, don’t be surprised if you run into a few old feathered friends, as The Old Village is now famous for the chickens that have made downtown Fair Oaks their permanent residence.

The choice really is a no-brainer. You can go to the mall and get into a foul mood or you can visit the tranquil setting of the Old Fair Oaks Village and get into a fowl mood. If you’re scared to try something new, don’t chicken out! You’ll be missing out on the time of your life. Holiday shopping can and should be a big

part of this joyous and festive season. Discover the joy of holiday shopping in the Old Fair Oaks Village.

Be sure to come to The Old Fair Oaks Village on Saturday, December 1, 2012 and help celebrate the 29th Annual Christmas in the Village. There will be lots of good old-fashioned fun for all with local merchants and street vendors offering a cornucopia of unique gifts and delicious food. The event will also feature live holiday music, a parade down the main street of town, a tree lighting in Plaza Park and jolly old Saint Nick himself!

With the holiday season just around the corner, many people will be busy gift buying and party planning. Whether you are going to a big office party or having a small, family celebration, one of the areas of biggest concern is a person’s hair. Problem is, winter can do some mean things to hair, leaving it dried out, frizzy, and brittle, so it’s important to take steps throughout the holiday period to ensure that one has fabulous holiday hair.

Here are 5 tips for having fabulous holiday hair: 1. Condition. Before the holidays arrive,

take the time to condition your hair so that it is ready to take on all that the season is going to throw at it. Make use of natural professional products that do no harm.

2. Get regular trims. Keeping your hair trimmed is essential to maintaining a beautiful head of hair and helping it to stay healthy.

5 Tips for Fabulous Holiday Hair3. Choose your hair products carefully

– Buy professional products. Whether it be a shampoo, conditioner, volumizer or styling product make sure that it matches your hair type and hair condition. Rule of thumb:

• If you need to cut costs by purchasing an over-the-counter product, do it with the shampoo, not with your conditioner.

• Choose your styling hair products based on your style. A good rule of thumb to follow is this: use mousse for light, carefree and blow-dried styles; gel for curly and wet-looking styles; and pomade for textured, funky and spiked styles.

• Finish off each style with hair spray with the desired hold.

4. Wash less. This is an area that gets a lot of people in trouble. Avoid over washing your hair during this time of the year. This will help you

avoid stripping all the natural oils out of your hair, during this dry weather period. 5. Skip the heat. Many people like to use some sort of heat source on their hair, to either dry or curl it. This can be quite damaging and drying to the hair, so avoid using heat on it, whenever possible.

Do you classify yourself as an optimist or pessimist? Just so we’re on the “same page”, optimism is defined as “A tendency to expect the best possible outcome or dwell on the most hopeful aspects of a situation”. The key distinc-tion is HOPE!

Now that the elections are over, (and isn’t that in itself GOOD NEWS), no matter whether your choices will be in office, this situation is now out of our control. So it serves all of us better if we remain hopeful that positive change will come. The following is good advice.

“Give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Give me the courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.”

And as Michael Jackson pointed out in “Man in the Mirror”, we do have complete influence in one key area: “if you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself, and then make a change.”

I, for one, am REALLY looking forward to 2013. And yes, please count me among the “cock-eyed”.

Cock-Eyed Optimism

To learn more about any of these organizations, visit BobsPocket.com. We are proud to be the hub for all these great “village movements”. Let us know if you want to be included.

Following are just some of the reasons I am optimistic and hopeful for 2013. These organizations will con-tinue to be positive influences in our community:

Since it was founded in 1959, the Cordova Community Coun-cil has had a profound impact in the future of Rancho Cordova. They bring us such community-

centric events like Kid’s Day, the International Festival, the BEST 4th of July event in the region, and so much more. Be sure to visit the Community Christmas Tree at Capital Village on 3151 Zinfindel Dr. this month!!

BeMoneySmartUSA brings fresh fruit & vegetables into our community every week, pro-vides an outlet for local farmers and vendors, and gives kids an opportunity to learn valuable

job skills and earn experience and wages. I don’t think it gets much better than that!

The Fair Oaks Cemetery con-tinues to bring community focus to our veterans and fallen heroes throughout the year. They also will be a 2013 sponsor for our commu-nity calendar on BobsPocket.com

and we are thankful for their support.

The Community Arts Alli-ance will continue to “Rock the Renaissance” by promoting the arts in our region. If you are an organization or individual and would like to learn more of our

plans for 2013, visit CommunityArtsAlliance.com. Be sure to check out our calendar for holiday gifts and events and sign up for our newsletter.

Car Tech TalkMaintenance Really Pays Off

The time of year is upon us, temperatures suddenly drop into the 20’s or even low teens at night. The unfortunate side affect is the failure of plastic radiators and overflow tanks. The operating temperature of the engine remains fairly constant. The big difference is the much lower temperature that the system starts out at.

When the temperature is low, the components shrink in size much more than normal. This temperature differential increases the amount of expansion. This expansion causes stress in the tanks and overflow container. After about 80k miles, this stress will cause the plastic to tear. Unlike metal, which tends to fail over time, the plastic fails more dramatically, usually with little to no warning. We recommend replacement of the parts as a preventative measure at 80k miles. Most of our customers are very savvy and have read about maintaining these items rather than perform a break fix which can be much costlier. These costs include tow fees, loss of work, or worse, destroying an engine!

Plastic is a layman’s term I use; the real material is a DuPont PA66-G33F fiber reinforced nylon. With the advent of superior hose material, plastic radiators and coolant formulations. Gone are the days of rusty cooling systems and blown hoses. The tradeoff for all this joy is what we deal with today. A cooling system, if cared for properly, will be trouble free for approximately 6 or 7 years. As cars become more high tech, both in materials and design, the maintenance needs change.

BMW’s or German built cars are maintenance cars. They are designed to last for 400k to 500k miles, mostly unheard of with domestic and Japanese cars. Maintenance schedules are aimed at keeping the support components like cooling, brake and other systems from failing. In Europe, cars are kept much longer than in the U.S. It is

not uncommon for us to have customers with over 250k to 400k miles on a BMW.

It is difficult to convince an American consumer that it is worth keeping a BMW over 200k miles. We are bombarded with domestic auto manufacturers telling us our 2 or 3 year old car isn’t cool anymore. They even entice us to trade in, even if it means we roll our debt into the new car. Ever heard this on TV? “Are you tired of that old car?” or “Sick of making payments on an old car?” Car loans are typically less than 5 years, so how can you be paying on an “old” car? The average length of ownership in the U.S. is approximately 5 years. There are now reports that people are keeping cars longer due to the downturn in the economy. Compared to Austria where 52% of the cars are German built, their average is 12.5 years, or over twice as long.

Simply amortizing the cost of the car over twice the amount of years will show a drastic savings. One report found that by simply keeping your car and additional 2.5 years over the national average will result in savings. If you buy a car designed to last a long time, your savings are even greater.

The simple answer is the same for any purchase. Buy the best quality you can afford, maintain it properly and over time you will have saved money. For me, this means buy a BMW, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and you’ll drive a car you can be proud of and put a little extra in the bank too.
